[Gimp-user] Text outline and transparent fill

2022-05-29 Thread Paula Koval via gimp-user-list
Hi! I am learning how to make a multi-layered project consisting of four
images and a top layer of text that I will enter.

I want to use a font native to Gimp, at least 64 pt and I want to use a
solid color outline of the character with a transparent fill so the images
are clearly seen through the text. I do not understand which Edge Detect
selection in the Filters Tools, if any, is the right one to use. I went
there because I have used Drop Shadow and Neon before.

I have also consulted the Gimp User Manual online before writing to ask for
help. I appreciate your pointing me in the right direction.

Many thanks!

Re: [Gimp-user] Help with 2.10.30

2022-01-23 Thread Paula Koval via gimp-user-list
I followed your suggestions and I clicked on the text editor in the Tool
Options box to see my input and it was there. Then I went to the Layers
dialog, selected Stack, and reversed the order of the layers so Layer 1 was
at the top. I saw the text I entered was in the layer with the large T in
it but it was near the bottom of the stack. I selected that layer, moved
it to the top, where it should have been, and the text appeared as it
should be.

I will be looking for a default setting for how the layers stack, with the
Base Layer at the top. Are there default settings for such preferences
that I might not know are there due to their names or technical terms?

Thank you so much for giving me a hand and helping me to find the answer.
Be safe and stay well.

[Gimp-user] Help with 2.10.30

2022-01-23 Thread Paula Koval via gimp-user-list
My partner has no problem adding a text layer to a gif image using 2.8.22
Adding a text layer to jpg with 2.10.30 works fine. Both of us have tried
to add a text layer to a gif image using 2.10.30 using the text editor and
pasting input from the clipboard and the result is invisible text, but if I
move the cursor over the area where the text has been inserted I can see
the rectangular boxes showing spaces where characters have been inserted.
I check the font, size and, color before adding text but it is not
visible. I have looked at and tried settings in View, Layers, Images,
Preferences, Windows, every possibility I could change before coming to
this list. I need your help, please.

Thank you.

[Gimp-user] Gimp 2.8.22 Interleave Layers

2022-01-13 Thread Paula Koval via gimp-user-list
Good day, all!

My partner has been using version 2.8.22 for some time. At least that's
what it says when I check it on her laptop.

She has a new laptop so I went to the Gimp download site and I downloaded
and installed version 2.8.22 and found that in the Images menu it does not
include Interleave Layers.

Before posting this I have tried the following: I looked for it in Python
Console by browsing the list but I don't know enough Linux to know the
command if I had seen it. I tried to copy the program from her old laptop
but Windows 10 has done a great job of burying it. I know it's in there
and I will keep looking for it to put on a flash drive and install on her
new laptop.

I want to be covered in any case. Is there another way to install
Interleave Layers in 2.8.22, please?

Many thanks for your help.

[Gimp-user] Mixing type fonts or sizes on the same layer

2021-03-26 Thread Paula Koval via gimp-user-list
Greetings!

I hope that I have sent this inquiry to the right place.

I am using Gimp 2.8.10 I being in a GIF, open it, add a layer of text in
the font and size I want, add drop shadow. After the layers are all made
to be of the same size and interlaced I have a GIF with a message on its
top layer, all in the same font and point size.

I want to be able to have at least two point sizes of the same font
appearing "on top" of a GIF or JPG. I suspect that it will take the
creation of another layer as I have learned that a layer will accept but
one text box at a time. I have attempted to use the Add Layer but I am
missing something or doing something wrong.

May I please have some help to get me going in the right direction?

Many thanks!

[Gimp-user] Problem with Gimp file search feature

2017-04-24 Thread Paula Koval
My partner is using the latest release of Gimp and Windows 10. I have no
idea of why this problem is taking place and since I am not an expert in
W-10 or Gimp, I am asking for help.

First, she finds a gif image that she wants to use with Gimp and she stores
in a file on the HDD of her system. She then opens Gimp, goes to File,
clicks on Open, puts the name of the gif in Search, and has it search in
All Files, then tells it to Open.

The Gimp search facility runs and comes back with a result that she cannot
use because of the file extension that is added to the file name. The
result comes back asfilename.gif.lnk instead of what had been the
result until 24 hours ago, which was two results that appeared to be
related filename.lnk and filename.gif It was easy enough for her to
pick the filename.gif file because it was a result. She is dyslexic
and has a difficult time looking at the listing of images in her images
file.

Can anyone please tell me how I can fix this problem for her?

Thank you for your consideration.

Re: [Gimp-user] Text Characters

2017-03-02 Thread Paula Koval
Hello, Everyone!

I am looking for the way to take text that I have created that has a solid
color, make an outline around the edges of each character, and make the
center of each character transparent so it the attributes of the layer
below it will show through the transparent area. I tried to work with the
instructions I was given to do this (see below) but either I cannot
understand what I am to do, or the instructions are not complete. To all
who have helped me, I thank you and I need a bit more to understand how
this is to be done.

Have a great weekend!

1. Enter your text
2. Layer->Text to Path
3. Edit->Stroke path (you need to set up color etc)
4. Edit->Select by Color
5. Ctrl + x to delete the colour (of your text)

Much better IMHO to avoid the post-stroke deletion by stroking the text
outline on a new layer...

In addition select-by-color does a "binary" selection so the pixels on the
edge are either completely removed
(jagged line) or left (faint colored rim).

Hello, All! Thanks to Ofnuts and others I have learned how to add a text

text. It works very well but I notice one flaw: the text and drop shadow
flicker at what I think is the same rate as the gif. It seems that they
flicker whenever the gif starts over again. Any ideas on how to stop the
flicker? Is it possible? My thanks in advance!

Re: [Gimp-user] (no subject)

2017-01-28 Thread Paula Koval
Good Saturday or Sunday, as it may be! Thank you, Ofnuts, for reminding me
about taking the image from disk. Duh!

You gave me the link to an excellent tutorial on YouTube that taught me the
title page process but the video is no longer available, or so says YouTube.

I have looked at three other tutorials on YouTube for placing text on top
of a gif image. All of them move too fast for me. I cannot understand how
they get the image to break into its layers on the right-hand side of the
Gimp work area. Not knowing that or how to change the size of the layer
images to "gigantic," as advised by one tutorial, I find it harder to
access that knowledge.

Please point me in a useful direction.

Many thanks and have a pleasant Sunday!

[Gimp-user] (no subject)

2017-01-27 Thread Paula Koval
Hello, All! I am a casual user of Gimp and I was trying to re-learn how to
put a text layer on top of a gif image.

I found a gif image to use for practice and I copied its URL to use to
Create Image From Webpage. I did that because I figured that the gif image
would lose its motion if I tried to copy it to clipboard and then to Gimp.

So I entered the gif image URL into its proper place and this is the error
message that I got: TLS/SSL support not available; install glib-networking

I made a Google inquiry for Install Glib Networking and I found things that
I do not understand. I do not know how to open the files that I found to
get to the Install program, so I am asking for help with this. Please tell
me how to install Glib Networking.

I have another issue with Gimp. This evening I deleted my existing copy of
Gimp and downloaded and installed the entire Gimp suite from the Gimp site
so I could have a clean copy of the latest revision. I followed directions
to install it.

When I opened the Gimp program, I got an error message that there is a
missing file. This is the error message: The procedure entry point
g_get_home_dir_utf8 could not be located in the dynamic link library
C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\gap_decode_mplayer.exe Is
this a fatal error? Do I need to fix it? Please tell me what the fix is.

Any help that you can share with me is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Paula

[Gimp-user] Barely skilled user - How to put a clear layer with test on top of a .gif image

2016-09-21 Thread Paula Koval
I am looking for a way to add a layer to a gif image upon which I can add
text, a layer that is transparent and will not move or flash, like writing
on a window behind which there is action.

My thanks to everyone who sent possible answers to my question. I tried to
implement them as I was reading the Gimp User Manual. I am not a skilled
user. I am learning as I go. I had no idea that Python is a way of
writing scripts for Gimp. I do not know where to find my Gimp profile. I
am not kidding. The user manual does not mention it.

I am most appreciative of any help that you can offer. I am a personal
user, helping my roomie to improve her blog.

My thanks in advance

Paula
