Yes you do. It's basically a simple RLE compression scheme. Repeated bytes
(up to 128) are
represented as

[1-N][byte]

Non-repeated sequences (up to 128 bytes) are output as

[N][sequence]

It is possible for the "compression" to expand the data some; there's a very
hairy calculation for
the worst case.

It's most commonly used via the CUPS driver.

Yep. That doc is way out of date.

The important one to change is the "driver" parameter. Those need to be
distinct.

If you're using the Gutenprint plugin, you can create new printers via the
printer selection box and
set whatever printer you want, each one with its own settings.

The PDF rendered fine (at least for me); the problem was with the viewport into

The PDF actually does render, just as a vertically narrow strip at the top of

It's not a bug -- there's no way to reconstruct the missing

dimensions.

Yep. Once you've transformed from CMYK to RGB you've irretrievably
lost that extra information.

So first off, I agree and if anything would go further and say that
there's rarely going to be a problem at even 75-100 dpi.

One is often viewing a ~20" print from rather closer than 10-12';
that's not an atypical viewing distance from a much larger TV. But I
don't disagree with the conclusion for a photograph, where there's not
normally extremely high spatial frequency data at high contrast, even
if the image is reasonably sharpened. Even highly detailed scenes,
such as trees, fields of grass, and such usually in my experience
don't have a lot of pixel-to-pixel detail, and if they do, it's only
going to be right at the focal plane.

Text and line art (including high quality photographic reproductions
of same) are another matter, but that doesn't sound like the use case
here.

Just to give you an idea, [1] has long been one of my own favorites,
and I've printed it at 16x24 many times. It has quite a bit of fine
detail throughout. It was taken in 35mm film with an inexpensive lens
(Tamron 28-200, in the late 1990's when that was an early superzoom),
and might charitably have 2000 lines/inch resolution or 6 megapixels,
which would work out to 125 dpi on the final print.

That's a bad comparison; there are other reasons why newspaper photos
are poor quality (cheap paper and ink, bad channel-to-channel
registration, and so on).

Which also brings up the issue of print technology -- the printer's
screening, whether a fixed grid dot screen like offset printing or the
much higher frequency but less regular dithering of an inkjet or
laser, will usually help hide pixelation in a continuous tone image,
and if not, good quality scaling as Liam suggests will hide the
pixelation. Pixelation is a lot harder on the eye than a small bit of
softness.

That did it.

I'm guessing (too late in the evening for me to investigate) that what
happened is that I don't enable save window positions on exit, and
single/multiple window mode is treated as "window position", so that
setting never got saved.

(I start my window manager from a fixed session too. However, there
are some exceptions; I build up so much state in my browser and emacs
that I really do need session saving, and I wish the xterm/bash
combination could do the same thing. But I tend to use GIMP as a
one-off, so preserving state isn't very useful to me.)

It's worse; it appears that whenever I start GIMP *period*, it's in
single window mode.

I don't like single window mode. I just don't. That's my final
answer. It just doesn't fit my working style, which is to have lots
of windows open all over the place. And I don't want tiled, either.
Again, personal preference.

But I cannot find a way to turn it off permanently. I can uncheck
Windows->Single Window Mode, but the next time I start it, it's back
to single window mode. I haven't found an option to disable it by
default either; hopefully I've just missed it?

[Gimp-user] Multi-window mode with toolboxes attached?

2018-10-16 Thread Robert Krawitz
Is there a way to enable multi-window mode (each image with its own
window) but with each image having its toolbars and boxes attached? I
dislike single window mode with a single visible image (and even a
tiled singe-window mode wouldn't be what I want; I want each image to
be fully window-managed), but having toolbars and such attached to
each image would be very useful.

I replied to you offlist. Check your spam folder in case my message
got dropped. I'm the project lead for Gutenprint.

The bottom line solution is to install Gutenprint 5.2.14, which
properly supports most color laser printers.

This question really belongs on
gimp-print-de...@lists.sourceforge.net, but no mind, since I'm here.
But please reply off-list, since I can help you directly as the
Gutenprint project lead.

You will need to download and build (from source) Gutenprint 5.2.14,
from here:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-print/files/gutenprint-5.2/5.2.14/

5.3.1 does support color printing from color laser printers. I'd
suggest 5.2.14 for now, though; 5.3.1 is fairly new.

After you run make install, you need to run cups-genppdupdate. If you
use 5.3.1, you would need to run cups-genppdupdate -x.

You could also try using the Gutenprint plugin, which allows you to
resize the image dimensions.

[Gimp-user] Multiple command line args always use single window mode (2.10)?

It appears that even if I uncheck single window mode, when I run

gimp *.tif

it always opens in single window mode. Hopefully there's just a
setting I missed?
