mbps which would be dreadful).


Bear in mind though that the sync speed which you get has nothing to do 
with the ISP which you use.  Regardless of who provides your back-haul 
service, the sync speed is dictated by the quality of the wire between 
you and the cabinet.  Switching to a different ISP will make no 
difference to it, unless you also switch to a different infrastructure 
(e.g. Virgin).


The original query though was about IP address allocations and DNS. 
That *is* under the control of your chosen ISP.

As each pair would consist of an old disk combined with a new one, would the 
whole system not be less likely to be destroyed by two disks failing 
simultaneously?

What are the exact command combinations to accomplish this?

(vgextend, vgcreate, lvextend, lvresize)

Yes, I paid the one-off £5 for a static IPv4 address. Mine is capped at 40Mbps 
down, 10Mbps up, but my modem tells me that the maximum achievable down has 
varied between about 40Mbps and 90Mbps, highest when the ground is wet, now 
72.79Mbps. The cables are old, mostly installed around 1930-1940, and the 
ducts are badly damaged, so BT are reluctant to touch them.

I had similar problems with them 30 years ago: I decided that I no longer needed
one of the two phone lines that I had at an office. I wrote to them (on paper)
to their registered office in London and just stopped paying the bills that
continued to arrive. About a year later the threatened court action - so I just
sent a copy of the letter.

I don't have time to wade through their beurocrasy, so tell them, & let them
soft themselves out. Far too many organisations are almost impossible to talk to
these days :-(

No it'd all they need to manage for those who will buy the cheapest
and lump it.

Switch to a decent provider like Andrews or Zen, enjoy static
IPv4 and IPv6 netblocks. Life is too short.

Interesting. I did not know about this and just went with the flow during 
installation and used ext4.

Don't even *dream* of going with BT.  Their customer service is beyond

Hello,
I have been with Plusnet long enough to know that emails could be downloaded 
using pop3 from pop3.plus.net, but that failed recently. Their website now 
says that mail.plus.net should be used, but they had not provided the DNS for 
that name.
They have now provided the same set of eight IPv4 addresses for both 
pop3.plus.net and mail.plus.net so both are working.
I am still waiting for IPv6 to appear, promised "soon" for several years.

The recommendation to ISP's from RIPE is that every human on earth could be 
allocated an IPv6 /48 without problems for about 480 years and without needing 
to reclaim and re-assign any, although ISP's may wish to restrict some non-
commercial users to only a /64 from each allocated /48.
