Colocation ...

2004-04-29 Thread Jason
I am looking to move to a closer, cheaper colo situation for a web server. I
mostly need Ping Power and Pipe with some in-house Linux expertise in case I
dig a hole too deep for myself. So far ColoSpace.com in Manchester looks to
be the best value. Anyone care to share their experience with them? Good bad
or otherwise. Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Jason Kern

I work for them, so I think they're great :)

But in order to be fair, MV also has good colo and is about 2blocks away
from colospace.

Colospace does have a nicer facility and better network redundency then MV..

oh, and I used to work for MV too, so perhaps you shouldn't even listen
to me... :)

Seriously, if you want to go with colospace I can give you a tour (not
today, I'm in their Marlborough and Somerville facility).. But any time
really... contact me off list if you're really interested. I'd even be
willing to give you the tour off hours.

BasicLinux 3.20 (for 386/486 PCs, including laptops)

2004-04-29 Thread Larry Cook
I seem to recall some one had asked about Linux for old PCs a while back. I
just came across this today:
-
BasicLinux 3.20
http://freshmeat.net/releases/159107/

BasicLinux is a mini-Linux distribution designed specifically for old
PCs. It provides a slim 2.2.16 kernel, a user-friendly shell and a good
assortment of utilities. It includes a Web browser, a comm program, an
email client, a telnet client, wget, DHCP, and dial-up PPP. It also
includes a small footprint GUI, and is able to run remote X (via
network) with as little as 4 MB RAM.
-
I don't remember if this is one of the ones that was mentioned. It sounds
like it is launched from DOS and uses a RAM disk, but can also be installed on
a partition. Does any have any opinions of or experiences with it?

Thanks,
Larry

Re: Oh NO!, It is Hoss Traders again!

2004-04-29 Thread Jon Hall
I have been traveling constantly with few accesses to the Internet
so I have not had time to evaluate all the people who answered
back about Hoss Traders.

I will be getting into the airport in Boston in late afternoon
today (Thursday), and will probably get to Hoss Traders about
noon on Friday, staying until close on Saturday. I suggest that
unless you really want to go up there early that you also shoot
for noon on Friday and look for me in the "usual building".

For those of you new to Hoss Traders, it is hard to describe where
we are other than the "usual building". I can give you the hint
that you come in through the main gate onto the fairgrounds
(not at the parking lot, but a little further down the road
where the wire gate and all the Shriners are), then travel to the first
"junk food" stand on the left. Our building is across the road
from that "junk food" stand, and we are usually on the right hand
side of the building toward the front. Or you can ask at the
information stand where "The Linux Guys" are.

See y'all tomorrow.

copyright-free photos

2004-04-29 Thread Greg Rundlett
At last night's GIMP presentation I mentioned a resource where you can
find 32,000 high-quality photos that are copyright-free / in the public
domain so you can use them without royalty or payment of any kind. (You
should still read the fair-use statement to understand the implications
of using a persons identifiable face in a commercial image.)

Well, here is that website, plus there is a wikipedia page that has
links to all varieties of public domain image resources
