You'll notice that it comes from the "sr" (SCSI CD-ROM) device driver. That is not used for writing CDs -- only for reading them. The "sg" (SCSI generic) driver is used for writing to discs. So this is not a problem with the write process itself. Something I've had trouble with in the past are the various "auto mount on media load" gadgets. That is, daemons that poll devices to see if media has been inserted, and automatically mount it if so. The intent is to make it so that users don't have to manually mount media; they just stick the disc in and it magically appears on their GUI desktop. The problem occurs when these gadgets poll a drive which is half-way through writing a new CD. That obviously isn't going to work, and causes the drive itself to get all confused, which causes the whole thing to puke. I solve this problem by killing off and disabling all those auto-magic mount gadgets. I don't like them anyway, cause I'm an old-school control freak and like to mount my media manually, the way man was intended to. There's probably a more sophisticated solution, but this worked for me. YMMV. I've had a LOT of problems with my USB devices on different versions of the 2.6 kernel... -- Derek D. Re: USB CD Burners?
This may or may not be related, but... I'm playing with an external USB Sony DRU-510a at work on Solaris 8. This is a DVD +/- RW drive. I have the same drive at home as an IDE drive and haven't gotten around to putting it in my USB 2.0 enclosure. Sun has something called cdrw that works with CDs. It isn't working with the DVD+R I have. There is something called growisofs (part of dvd+tools) that claims to work with DVD+R/DVD+RW devices. I can't get it to work either. I'll try tomorrow with -R media. I have gotten growisofs to work on linux with + media. The various hacked cdrecord programs do not work with the + media. No Hosstraders?
Hello LUGers, I recently posted a message[1] here asking if there was any interest in continuing the GNHLUG presence at Hosstraders. To date, I've received two responses, and only one person really interested in helping at the booth. So unless I receive an outpouring of volunteerism in the next few days, I think we can officially call GNHLUG's days at Hosstraders over. That doesn't have to be a bad thing; Linux's growing popularity (and the increase in consumer high-speed Internet) has largely eliminated the reasons we were there in the first place. Well, I was about to write that I would bring versions of Knoppix remastered with ham radio applications for distribution and was giving thought to setting up a functional radio setup again. I must confess I don't tend to hang out at the booth for long periods and have been AWOL the past two events. I know some of the CENTRALUG people have talked about being there. Don't know if that helps or matters. Ed Lawson ___ gnhlug-discuss mailing list gnhlug-discuss@mail.gnhlug.org http://mail.gnhlug.org/mailman/listinfo/gnhlug-discuss

(2) It's on a Friday night (so I'm free then), and... (3) I want to go!! I can help out with the Linux end of things. Don't know much about ham, though it's an interest of mine.
