Re: [OT] Internet Network Neutrality and NH

2006-05-03 Thread Greg Rundlett
Net Neutrality is a big deal for regular people and small business who will all get the short end of the stick.  Sadly I really haven't heard any mention of it in the news.Rep. Charles F. Bass II
(voted against net neutrality)Republican representing New Hampshire's 2nd district

Call Rep. Bass II now at 202-225-5206Say: "I was disappointed in your vote against the Markey amendment to
the COPE Act. Please keep the Internet free and open by voting for
enforceable network neutrality requirements in the future. Thank you."

Reminder: DLSLUG Monthly Meeting - May 4th

2006-05-03 Thread Bill McGonigle

[please RSVP if you haven't already]

***

The next regular monthly meeting of the DLSLUG will be held:
 Thursday, May 4th, 7-9PM
at: Dartmouth College, Carson Hall Room L01
All are welcome, free of charge.

Agenda

7:00  Sign-in, networking

7:15  Introductory remarks

7:20  Resara Enterprise Linux

  The guys from Resara Networks
  will be presenting their product, Resara Enterprise Linux.

  "This presentation will be about adoption of desktop Linux in the
   enterprise, and how our product meets the challenges. The issues
   we will be discussing are broadly applicable to any Linux
   distribution and organization that wishes to adopt desktop Linux.
   The key topics we will be addressing are:

Installation/Migration
Integration with legacy applications
Network Management
Useability
OSS Alternatives

   Why should you go? This is an opportunity to see and ask
   questions of how Linux on the desktop can be made practical
   for the corporate desktop. You will get to see integration
   with Active Directory, Windows Terminal Services, advanced
   thin client technology, and other open source desktop
   management tools and applications.

   We will also be showcasing 3D accelerated graphics on a thin
   client (Unreal Tournament), which to our knowledge is an
   industry first! The practical application of this technology
   would be 3D CAD in a thin client environment, but Unreal
   Tournament is much cooler. Hope to see you there!

8:30 Roundtable Exchange - where the attendees can make
  announcements or ask a linux question of the group.

Please see the website for links to directions.

If any area companies are interested in sponsoring refreshments, please
let me know.

Please RSVP so we can give a theoretical refreshment sponsor a
headcount.

MAILING LISTS

   There are two primary mailman lists set up for DLSLUG, an Announce
   list and a Discuss list. Please sign up for the Announce list
   (moderated, low-volume) to stay apprised of the group's activities
   and the Discuss list (unmoderated) for group discussion.
   Links to the mailing lists are on the webpage.

NELS looking for attendees and a replacement presenter

2006-05-03 Thread Matt Oquist
The NorthEast Linux Symposia are educator-focused summer training
conferences. We have two of them: one in Bethel, Maine from June 17-20
and one at UNH in Durham from July 16-19.

The NELS in Bethel has been held for the past three years, and last
year we had a few more than 60 attendees! But the UNH NELS is
brand-new this year, and we could still use some help in getting the
word out and getting people to register at http://nelinux.net.

Who should attend:
 * Free Software vendors/support people
 * technology coordinators
 * technology directors
 * technicians
 * school administrators
 * teachers

We have put together a flier about NELS that presents a concise
picture of what we're all about:
http://nelinux.net/file.php/1/moddata/forum/1/27/2006-flyer.pdf

The Software Freedom Day wiki has a starting point for an open letter
to educational institutions, and a polite, thoughtfully customized
version of that might be a good thing to send to your local school
district's tech team along with a copy of our flier and some
encouragement to consider attending NELS. The real URL for this letter
is long, but the tinurl is not: http://tinyurl.com/eaa99

We've got a great schedule lined up for this year, as you can see by
our program:
http://nelinux.net/file.php/1/moddata/forum/1/29/2006-nels-sessions.pdf

Unfortunately, the gentleman who was going to speak on Winbind
& Active Directory has had to cancel. We would prefer that this topic
was simply irrelevant because nobody *ran* Active Directory, but sadly
the world is not yet to that point and we need another presenter to
cover this session at both conferences.

It's a 1/2-day session, and the goal is to demonstrate winbind
configuration while facilitating all the attendees in configuring
their own systems that they bring to the session.

If you're interested or you know of somebody who might be, please
contact me (phone anytime, or email). Presenters pay nothing to be at
the symposium, and since this is only a 1/2 day session you'll have
the rest of the time to attend other sessions (and even assist other
presenters if you like) and generally hang out with fun people.

Just a short opportunity to pimp the company I work for... PubSub Concepts
(www.pubsub.com) has a pretty good prospective search engine for this kind of
stuff. RSS in particular is popular, but you can setup searches in all sorts
of different data sources and get matching results posted to an RSS feed in
real time.
