Are you speaking from actual experience or are you confusing fglrx with DRI?

I have not found a card listed as supported on DRI's website that didn't
work. In what situation did you find the free drivers not working on cards
listed as supported?

You actually did a remarkably good job of explaining it yourself:

These work.

These don't.

I don't expect that to always be the case, but for somebody with 3D work
to do today, that's what it comes down to.

[GNHLUG] Summer BBQ - Sunday 6 July - Loudon - All invited!

2008-06-11 Thread Ben Scott
What : Summer BBQ
Where: Miles Smith Farm, Loudon, NH
Who : You! Members! Everybody!
Date : Sunday 6 July 2008
Time : 4 PM to 7-ish PM

  Greetings fellow GNHLUGers!

As testified by recent temperatures, summer has come around once
again. That means it is time for GNHLUG's annual cookout! Let's all
get together and enjoy the company of friends and colleagues -- and
some darn good food!

Anyone associated or connected with GNHLUG is welcome. Everyone is
encouraged to take this chance to meet and mingle with other Linux
enthusiasts. While primarily a social event, tech talk is inevitable
at these things, and useful tips and even business opportunities often
pop up.

This will be a "pot-luck" BBQ. Show off your culinary or shopping
skills, and please bring some kind of edible item for the party.
Children are welcome! (But not as edible items.) BYOB. The menu
will be coordinated at the web site (see link below).

Once again, Bruce Dawson and Carole Soule have generously offered to
be our hosts, at Miles Smith Farm in Loudon, NH. If you've never been
there, it's a beautiful spot, with a rustic old farm house and barn,
hilly fields, and an incredible view. The "farm" part isn't just a
name -- it's an actual, working farm, with cows and horses, and farm
products for sale. Don't let that scare you away, though -- Bruce is
a certified geek, so electricity and WiFi Internet are readily
available.

For more information, updates, directions, and/or to RSVP, please visit:

http://wiki.gnhlug.org/twiki2/bin/view/Www/SummerBBQ2008

Hope to see you all there!

2008-06-11 Thread Arc Riley

You know I've had far, far fewer problems with Radeons than nVidia over the
past 7 years.

I've had nVidia drivers that break USB2 support, that breaks SATA support,
that just doesn't support the latest four kernel microversions, that cause
the kernel to panic randomly throughout the day, that cause Xorg to severely
memory leak until it segfaults, that doesn't work with various AGP chipsets
(until a new driver release a few months later that replaces this with other
bugs),

Of the 6 nVidia cards I own one of them, an nForce 4, still cannot be used
with GNU/Linux because it causes periodic X lockups, while working fine on
Windows 2000.

I have had zero, zero problems with the free DRI Radeon drivers. r200,
r300, works great, has for at least 4 years. If you'll remember ATI
released the specs to the r200 series years ago to the DRI team. Even when
r300 was called "experimental" and "beta" I still found no faults in it, and
I'm fairly well known for finding obscure bugs.

For those using ATI's proprietary fglrx drivers, saying nVidia's proprietary
drivers are better is like advocating a product because it's shit stinks
less. Proprietary drivers are always crap.

The point is, ATI has cooperated with the community in the past, unless you
were spending more than $50 on a video card the free drivers worked great,
and a few months ago AMD pledged to do so more fully in the future and has
followed through with that promise. There's a flurry of activity in the DRI
team implementing the several thousand pages of specs at a breakneck speed
and almost every Radeon is supported now.

Yes, they're dropping fglrx support. AMD realizes what everyone needs to
realize, writing proprietary drivers for GNU/Linux is just not reasonable.
There's a large, energetic community of volunteers who want nothing more
than the specs, and they'll do a better job with free drivers than AMD with
a team of paid employees could ever do. It's not the paradigm they're used
to, so it's taken them time to understand how things work in our community.

Boycott nVidia until they understand this, too. Proprietary drivers are a
fine pragmatic solution when you already own one, but when in the market for
a new video card look for "Radeon".

[GNHLUG] NHRuby meeting Tuesday, Jun 17: Google App Engine and more!

2008-06-11 Thread Scott Garman
The NH Ruby and Rails User Group will hold its June 2008 meeting at the
usual spot, RMC Research in Portsmouth. This month we have the honor of
having Brian DeLacey return to give another interesting talk.

What's a Rubyist to do when great environments come along but don't
(yet) support Ruby? Google App Engine, for instance, only supports
Python. Well, of course - Learn Python! It's easy.

This meeting will give a quickstart intro to Python for the Rubyist.
We'll then take a look at "Hello World" running on Google's App Engine.
You may leave wondering whether Django is Python's jazz improvisation of
Rails.

To keep things environmentally friendly, we'll do the demos on a newly
built, energy efficient PC running Ubuntu and using a just a few watts
of power with Intel's new Atom processor. We'll also spend a little time
talking about how simple, fun, and inexpensive it was to build this
powerful little Atomizer. You may find "atomic power" is a great way to
experiment with Ruby and learn Python.

WHEN: Tuesday, June 17, 2008. 7-9 PM.
WHERE: RMC Research Offices, 1000 Market Street, Portsmouth, NH.

For a map and driving directions, see our wiki site:

http://wiki.nhruby.org/index.php/Upcoming_meetings

Regards,

Scott

NVidia's track record for Linux support is better. Hmmm, no.
NVidia's track record for Linux support sucks less. They only do
closed, binary-only drivers, but they've consistently supported Linux
on i386 for much longer. ATI has a history of claiming support and
then killing it off. Perhaps they'll stick with it this time, but
only time will tell. Meanwhile, I know that if I had gone with an
NVida card a while back, I would have had an easier and less expensive
time. NVida would have screwed me less than ATI.

That's hardly what I'd call a "recommendation" for NVidia, but I'm
certainly no fan of ATI, either.

Hey, cut us some slack, Jack. It would be more accurate for you to
say, "majority of postings I've read" since (A) most of the traffic
on this list is generated by a minority of those subscribed and
(B) some of us have business/emploment relationships that make for

Momentum, I suspect. A year and a half ago it was nVidia's
proprietary drivers or ATI's proprietary drivers, and ATI's sucked an
order of magnitude more. And when AMD bought ATI, they discontinued
all support for some proprietary-only hardware less than a year old
(yes, I owned some).

This year, I'm using ATI graphics in an embedded OpenGL project
specifically because they're open source-ing and I can redistribute
them. But most people probably speak from experience and haven't
bought a graphics card very recently.

acceptable to /recommend/ hardware only supported by proprietary drivers

nVidia 3d acceleration is only supported with proprietary drivers

Radeons have a comparable price/quality comparison and are supported by free
drivers builtin to the Linux kernel, Mesa, Xorg, DRI, etc using specs
released from ATI/AMD

IMHO, every lug across the country should be crying to boycott nVidia until
they join AMD, Intel, and Via in releasing specs, if not for the market
pressure than for the pragmatic element of not needing to install
proprietary drivers to make something as basic as accelerated video work.
