Momentum, I suspect.  A year and a half ago it was nVidia's  
proprietary drivers or ATI's proprietary drivers, and ATI's sucked an  
order of magnitude more.  And when AMD bought ATI, they discontinued  
all support for some proprietary-only hardware less than a year old  
(yes, I owned some).

This year, I'm using ATI graphics in an embedded OpenGL project  
specifically because they're open source-ing and I can redistribute  
them.  But most people probably speak from experience and haven't  
bought a graphics card very recently.
