Alternative: If all areas needed have IP network coverage, you can
get "IP extenders" compatible with most PA/speaker systems. If they
don't already have IP coverage, 802.11 gear is cheap COTS, and now you
have a network you can use for other things.

Whether or not this is easier/cheaper/better than anything else is
left up to the reader.

Re: ARTICLE - openwrt/dd-wrt based modem/router vulnerability?

2009-03-25 Thread Tom Buskey
Summary:

1) IFF your router is MIPS based (Linksys)
2) AND IF you have telnet/SSH/http open to the WAN (and wireless someday?)
3) AND IF you have one of the 6000 logins with one of the 13,000 password
(week password)
THEN you're vulnerable.

I'd imagine it'd be easy for the bot to evolve to use the wireless to search
out other routers via wireless. That would add 4) IF you don't use WPA2.

Attention to folks familiar with FM transmission

2009-03-25 Thread Neil Joseph Schelly
This message isn't Linux related - I'm sorry - but I know there's a lot of
contributors here who are familiar with radio transmitters and the like.
Please reply off-list if you can help me out.

A club I'm involved with has an interest in a small FM transmitter setup that
can be used to extend a PA rather cost-effectively over a half-mile radius or
so. I think that can be done with a relatively low-power setup that can
operate freely without tripping over other signals and the like, but I'm
really not sure about the laws governing this stuff.

Can anyone inform me what it would cost to buy/build such a setup and what
restrictions there would be on its use? Would anyone be interested in
building that setup for me assuming the price is within our means?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Carl:

Great to hear from you.

Hope the past winter was better for you in upstate then it was here in
NH (though I do note the list of Emergency Backup links on your site).

Joomla is definitely one of the popular CMS systems out there.
I've found that the move away from static web pages to almost any CMS is
pretty liberating for people.
Removes the need to have 'the web person who makes all the changes' in
an organization.
Still trying to get the local schools over that little hurdle.

Look forward to reading more of your web articles.

I've had good results with WordPress for many sites. It has a lot of
plugins to add various functions not inherent to the WP platform.

As others have pointed out, a more detailed list of the company's needs
would be helpful.

Feel free to contact me off-list, as building LAMP based sites with
various back ends is something I do as part of Just Works. I'd be happy
to work with them to come up with a good fit.

Definitely a good list of questions. Any of the top three (Joomla,
Drupal, and WordPress will do these to varying extents and varying
amounts of ease-of-use and features.
