I think I got my first Linux distro from one :)

Sadly, I saw *zero* Linux showing at the last show I attended
(which, I guess, brings me back to the previous topic...)

You should hold a reading! :)

  I'm amazed they're still around.

I remember buying an external 9600 BPS modem for someone from one of
the NC Shows. (Or maybe it was KGP. They were both around back
then.)

Despite the corny name, they're a legitimate local business. As you
say, they've been around for several years. I bought a USB/IDE
adapter from them once. They've even hosted a Software Freedom Day
with GNHLUG. So they're good.

More specifically, they're occupying the building that used to be
occupied by Electronic Planet (which was the same sort of place).

Right next to where FedEx/Kinkos currently is.

Their web-site is (you're right, it looks like a scam, but...):

  http://www.gotink4u.com/

There's also a video-rental store in Nashua (Video Thunder)
which has survived for the past few years by doubling as
a `used technology' store. And the pawn shops.

Re: [GNHLUG] GNHLUG and Drupal BBQ parties: Sept 8 and Aug 25

2012-08-16 Thread Bruce Dawson
Hmm. Interesting webapp.

Do we have a volunteer to set it up?

For the Aug 28 event: we only need RSVPs - but even that is being taken
care of at http://groups.drupal.org/node/243993/signups/list. Note that
there's only 6 RSVPs for this date.

The Sep 8 event will need it for potluck (what is needed and who is
bringing it), as well as RSVPs.

After someone asked me where this was, I realized the official name
seems to be "Got Ink 4U". My guideline for avoiding scams is to never
buy things from websites with numbers in their domain names and that
should really go double for brick and mortar stores. But they've been

They are near where Building 19 used to be. Google maps also knows the
way.

If you want/need a powerful laptop (for, I dunno, portable gaming
something?) that runs Linux right from the vendor, I have no advice.

If you only want an "adequate" laptop with no Windows Tax, I suggest
buying one used. I did that recently from "Electronics Warehouse" in
Nashua. They've got many to choose from.

I went there with a Debian Live CD. They wouldn't let me use it because
I'd burned it myself, but indicated they would have had it had an
Official Sticker.

http://www.debian.org/CD/artwork/

:)

The guy had a Linux Mint CD, though, and we tried a couple of laptops
out to make sure everything worked before I bought it. (In fact, I did
have trouble with it when I got it home, but I'm pretty sure that's
because of a faulty wireless router. It worked fine elsewhere.)

It's only a Dell Latitude D600, which is from almost 10 years ago. But I
can ssh to my home email, watch videos (online and not), check online
maps, etc. More than enough for my modest traveling needs. The only real
"problem" is that it only has a 40GB HD, so I can't store much
media. But I have effectively doubled that with a $20 USB flash drive
and will likely have much more than I really need.
