Re: set default file permissions for a directory

2005-12-11 Thread Numberwhun
I have to agree with Jason on both counts. I use scp on the Unix system
at work and when you ar specifying where you want to transfer to you
need to spefify the following:

   user@:/directory/on/other/machine

If you don't put the users it will default to using the user you are on
the local machine but will ask you for the password. If you don't
transfer certain files as the correct user, then permissions are not
correctly set. I would say the .profile(s) are read and used.

Jeff

Jason Stephenson wrote:

In your first post, you said that you can set the umask to 002. Have
you tried that?

I'm pretty sure that even using scp actually "logs in" the user enough
so that the shell environment is set up and things like the umask set
in .profile or whatever for their shell is sourced and does work. At
least it does seem to in my experience.

Re: Earthlink Cable

2005-08-13 Thread Numberwhun
True, it definately is cheaper than Comcast, but the only thing that is
keeping me from switching to Earthlink is the fact that they recently
deregulated(I think that is the correct term), meaning that Comcast no
longer has to allow 3rd parties such as Earthlink over their lines.
Hopefully for those on the Earthllink service, their ISP can keep up
good relations with the media giant.

Any way to do that?

Steven,

Ok, I am by no means a sendmail expert.  In fact, I haven't played with
it in a long time.  But, I did some googling and found the following
excerpt:

  Sendmail Validation

The check_compat ruleset compares
all senders and receiver pairs before
mail is delivered. It validates the mail based on the results of
the comparison. It checks to see if host A can legally send a message
to host B. check_compat is called for
all mail deliveries, not just SMTP transactions.
It is used in the following situations:

A set of users who are restricted
from sending mail messages to external domains need to send mail
messages to internal; domains. Both the sender and recipient addresses
are checked to ensure that they are in the local domain.

A particular user needs to ensure that he
or she
does not receive mail messages from a specific source.

A particular host needs to ensure that
external
senders do not use that host as a a mail relay. The mail messages
are screened based on the sender's hostname.

The link to the page is:  http://docs.hp.com/en/B2355-90685/ch04s09.html

The first bullet point, which checks the validity of user accounts
against the local domain sounds like what you are looking for.

[OT] News Server Help

2005-02-08 Thread Numberwhun
Hello everyone! For those of you who have Comcast cable internet, you
are probably aware that there was a recent change in their service
regarding their newsserver for news groups. That change was that they
are now outsourcing their newsgroups to giganews. Granted, this move
has made more message history available and more newsgroups as well, but
as I have recently discovered, there is a 2 gig limit per month on
transfers. I only found this out after not being able to download and
receiving an email stating such.

This ercks me to no end since those of us with cable are paying almost
twice as much as DSL and now we have had something torn out from under
us, that being the unlimited access we previously enjoyed. I know that
some people are probably saying, "So switch to DSL", but unfortunately,
it is not that easy. I do not have DSL available to me where I am
living here in Nashua, I have checked extensively.

Now, I did get online with Comcast and talked about this with their tech
support, but all they could come up with is, "Giganews offers unlimited
access for $24.95/month". Again, why pay when it was FREE before. Ok,
now that I have made the long story long instead of short, I was just
wondering if anyone here knows of a nice, free new server that allows
unlimited downloads/uploads, without monitoring? I know that one was
mentioned quite a while ago, but I don't have the messages saved. So,
if you know of any nice free unlimited servers, could you please post
them here, I would be quite grateful.

(sorry for the drawn out explanation, I am still a little steaming over
this issue).

I really ended up liking the two UK publications as they tended to gear

 Well, a couple "academic" points:
One should generally check compatibility *before* making a purchase. :-)
Dell offers two lines of laptops: Inspiron and Latitude. The Inspiron are
targeted at "home users". The primary design goals is cheap, cheap, cheap.
The after-sale support absolutely sucks. The Latitude line is targeted at
"business users". They cost more, but you get much better support, and it's
far less likely to infuriate you.

Of course, most people buy the Inspiron. Given two identical computers,
with identical specs, one more expensive but with good after-sale support
and one cheaper with horrible after-sale support, 97 out of 100 people will
buy the cheaper one. And they get what they pay for, every time. But I
digress.
On to the matter at hand:
I suggest heading on over to http://linux.dell.com/ -- the home of all
things Linux at Dell. The mailing lists, in particular, are full of
knowledgeable people who use Linux on Dell stuff. Nothing specific to
laptops at this time, I'm afraid, but maybe you find something.
 Good luck!

Again, I appologize for not being more specific in that I am seeing this at
during POST. I am thinking it may be something in the bios, but I don't see
anything about a processor type in there.

Actually, I think that is where the problem lies. I am seeing this at the boot
screen during POST, around the memory check. I haven't done anything with the
Linux kernel as of yet. I wanted to solve the system level issue before
optimizin the kernel.

OT: Help with computer config

2003-07-08 Thread numberwhun
Hello everyone! My appologies for the OT post, but I am having a small amount
of trouble with my new Linux box. I just built the machine ( it is an AMD
Athlon XP 1700, 1.47ghz). My problem is, when it boots, it registers the
following on the main screen:

 Unknown Processor ( 1.100 ghz )

The problem is, it is not recognizing my processor and the 'ghz' is definately
off. I have an MSI K7TTurbo - Socket A motherboard. I am just wondering, since
it has been so very long since I built a computer, if anyone knows what is wrong
that the processor is not recognized? Any ideas are greatly appreciated!!!
I have Linux installed and running, no problem, but I would really like it to
see the processor.

Jeff Kirkland

Here are a couple of links on replacing tables with CSS that I found a couple of

OT: Penguins

2002-12-24 Thread numberwhun
I saw this post on BLUG and found it funny, not to mention Penguin related.

Jeff

-- Start Forwarded Message --
I got this from the newsletter I'm laying out. It's a guide for anyone
in PR that has to get a real live penguin for a press conference:

“A Beginners Guide to Penguins at Press Conferences”
Erin Sutton, Assistant Account Executive, San Francisco

It always seems to be 3:00 p.m. on a Friday when a client gives you the
most challenging task of the week. In the case of the Sun Microsystem’s
Linux launch, it was “Find me a Penguin.” Penguins are the official
“geek” mascot of the Linux Open Source Software community, and Sun
thought a live penguin on stage with Sun’s CEO Scott McNealy would be a
crowd pleaser. Just in case Buzz readers get a similar request, here
are some helpful tips:

--Sourcing the Penguin…You need an Animal Trainer company. Just call
Los Angeles.
--Get Two Penguins …One penguin costs around $1500 but if you get two,
then the second is half off!
--Penguins Have Needs …Plan on paying for trainers (one penguin needs
two handlers) and health certificates at $55 bucks a pop.
--Penguins Can Fly ... Just not on Southwest Airlines. United will take
them for just $50.
--Hotels and Penguins …Want to make a hotel manager laugh? We asked
the manager of the Palace Hotel, San Francisco if they allow penguins
in the building. Amazingly, he said “Yes”.
--Penguins Squirm …Allow 10 minutes for the penguin to get ‘friendly’
with the CEO’s grip. Oh, and don’t expect a penguin to sit still on a
stage. They run. Fast.

As luck would have it, Sun decided Scott and Penguins wouldn’t be a
good mix afterall. At least we now know how to handle any future
penguin requests.

Re: DSL Provider of Choice

2002-12-24 Thread numberwhun
I just wanted to add to what was said by saying that not all DSL providers are
Linux friendly, as we all wish they were. I did a 3 year stint in Louisiana and
had Bellsouth as my DSL provider ( at the time, they had the best prices ).
They were not at all Linux friendly. In fact, the technician would not have
been able to give me the equipment if he knew it was going to be used on Linux
as they seemed to have a strict "against Linux" policy in place.
I had talked with a tech support person one day, since the connection was down
and ended up being at the junction box outside, and he was heavily into Linux.
He told me that Bellsouth was against Linux and did not at all support it.
It is so good to hear that there are companies that support Linux as the users
OS of choice. Hopefully others will follow in the footsteps of companies like
Speakeasy.

One thing that I have always believed, regardless of what
people think, is that no matter where your loyalties may
lie, you have to provide for your family and self first.
Nobody is immune to the effects of the present economy,
and that is proven just be seeing some of the companies
that have filed bankruptcy.
It really wasn't stated by Jon as to whether or not
people were giving him a hard time in the email messages,

Maddog is still a supporter of Linux, and from the
sounds of his new job description, he will continue to
support and further Linux in his described duties.
I say "Congratulations on the new job!" and see you at

Re: install questions

2002-09-17 Thread numberwhun

One suggestion is that you have a cdrom and a hard drive
on each chain. By having both the cdrom and the
cd-writer on the same chain, you will run into problems
should you try to copy a disk, drive to drive. Also, by
putting the hard drives on different chains, you will
increase the speed of the copy, vice having them on the
same chain.
Unfortunately, I have not used System Commander, so I am
in no position to comment on its use.

2002-08-12 Thread numberwhun
