Yup, and I remember paying $25. for ONE of those "serial line" connectors (not the cable, just the connector). And that was $25 back in 1977. md ___ gnhlug-discuss mailing list gnhlug-discuss@mail.gnhlug.org http://mail.gnhlug.org/mailman/listinfo/gnhlug-discuss/

Yah, I've seen an acoustic coupler before, but never one with a wooden enclosure! :) > Of course the circuitry was analog - other than dialing, the > phone system was analog. Much of it still is. Local loop POTS. I meant the modem's computer interface. The video explains -- and demonstrates -- that the modulation is just tied directly to the serial port's output. The tone changes when the wires are connected, or if a different cable is used. I had made an uninformed assumption that more sophisticated electronics would be needed in even an early modem. Apparently not. :) -- Ben ___ gnhlug-discuss mailing list gnhlug-discuss@mail.gnhlug.org http://mail.gnhlug.org/mailman/listinfo/gnhlug-discuss/

Of course the circuitry was analog - other than dialing, the phone system was analog. You can make an amplifier with one transister, an AM radio with six. A flip-flop takes at least two, at least if you want a useful one. ___ gnhlug-discuss mailing list gnhlug-discuss@mail.gnhlug.org http://mail.gnhlug.org/mailman/listinfo/gnhlug-discuss/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9dpXHnJXaE Can you guess what's in the wooden box without looking at the web browser title bar? I didn't know that those early devices were actually simple analog circuit designs. -- Ben ___ gnhlug-discuss mailing list gnhlug-discuss@mail.gnhlug.org http://mail.gnhlug.org/mailman/listinfo/gnhlug-discuss/
