They keep their calendar well-hidden, but having been handed a flyer
tonight I managed to find it online. On September 16th:

 9/16/2008
 SwANH Educational Event
 Location: SERESC, Bedford
 Time: 6:00 - 9:00 PM
 Topic: The Best Open Source and Low-Cost Tools for the Software
 Business

 A review of the top offerings from the Open Source and Low-Cost
 community for the software business. The session will profile
 offerings in various categories of interest to the software
 business, such as:

 * Source / Version Control
 * Bug Tracking
 * Documentation  Help
 * Project Management / Team Collaboration
 * Knowledge Base / Automated Support
 * Automated Testing
 * CRM
 * CMS
 * Web Conferencing / Remote Support
 * User Forum / Community
 * Office Productivity Tools (alternatives to MS Office)
 * Workflow and Document Management
 * Phone System  Voicemail

 In addition, experts and users of the tools profiled will discuss
 the pros and cons of using them compared with more traditionally
 priced tools, and what companies considering implementing these
 tools should do to make that choice successful. Such as: Data
 Ownership, Growth Path, etc.

That sounds like something worthy of our calendar, if not some form
of co-sponsorship.   I wonder who's presenting.

501(c)(3) again (was: SwaNH meeting postings)

  I'd say the legal advice has already arrived. We've been told
several times by multiple different people that GNHLUG would likely
benefit from being taken under the wing of an umbrella
organization which already has 501(c)(3) status.

  The question has been raised as to what, if anything, we loose by
entering into such a relationship, instead of trying for 501(c)(3)
status on our own. I haven't seen any informed answer to that
question. I'm hoping that if there were significant drawbacks, we
wouldn't have people we trust recommending it.

  I'm currently hoping to be able to spend some quality time with
volunteers from the Franklin Pierce Law Center (http://www.fplc.edu/)
this summer, to get such questions answered and the actual process
(whatever it may end up being) executed. Whether that happens depends
on the availability and willingness of such volunteers, of course.

  The upcoming Board/org meeting (Tue 29 Apr, a week from this coming
Tue) includes this on our agenda, although I expect the immediate
action is going to be just authorization to accept the assistance and
guideance of FPLC (should it be offered).

Agreed. And there's an Open Source presentation in September that sounds
very interesting...

 SwANH is a non-profit. As far as I know, they would be willing to shield
 other NH-based technology groups under their 501c3.

That's certainly a possibility. I think GNHLUG wants to establish its
own 501c3 status for several reasons, but we're trying to understand if
there is an umbrella or sponsor situation we'd benefit from passing
through. Legal advice is on its way...

 Note,
 for example, that SwANH has given free tables to GNHLUG and other groups
 at past software conferences.

I had inquired about a free or discounted table at a recent InfoXchange
(2006, iirc) and was told the regular $1000 vendor fee applied. It's not
a crowd we'd especially need to convert, so I haven't bothered to ask again.

That's a fair way of looking at it.

I signed up for this event myself, on the chance that I'll learn one
thing (worth more than $25). But just because we're both on this
list doesn't mean we represent the list.  I don't think there's a
relevant list, but maybe there should be. Or, y'know, just post it
on your blog, we all read that. :)

I agree with Ben. If this announcement was something about FOSS then
you could circulate it (and I would say to do that to announce).

If we want to help a sister organization, then perhaps we can have a
link to their site on our site. That way people can sign up for their
announcements (and drop the sign-up) as desired.

As much as I want to help SwANH (and software development in NH in
general), I have to agree with what has been stated already by Michael
and Ben.

On the other hand, if they are willing to sponsor GNHLUG in a
substantial way, or if they actively support (versus passively support)
FOSS, then I feel they can post a message to one of the lists.

On the other other hand, I have been to one of their conferences and
found it a good thing - at least for prospecting for local talent and
suppliers. It may be worth a one paragraph note on the -discuss list for
their Call for Papers or their meeting logistics. Or on the GNHLUG web
site as a Other regional software organizations.

 I'm terribly against allowing advertising on mailing lists. I don't
 see anything on their website which tells whether they are for-profit
 or not, and assume they are. I'm glad to help other non-profits and
 we can certainly partner with corporations who are truly part of the
 FOSS community. But I think we can't become a tool for corporations
 who want to capitalize on our reputation and good-will.

 My view is: if the source of the email generates money, we're sorry.
 If a member is sharing something they are actually interested in, it's
 certainly appropriate. Exceptions for promotions which we believe are
 LUG-related, of interest to members and will actually contain
 substance. For example, a distro rep demoing (not just a slideshow)
 an upgrade to a major version, when we are actually in need of
 presenters.
