Hi! I want to know if there is certain easy way of only checking out po dir certain module with git. While we are using CVS and SVN, we as committers can only checkout po dir of certain module, which will reduce network traffic a lot for large modules such as gtk+. It's not possible with git. You should checkout the whole module once and update it subsequently (git is quite cheap with updating). Or wait for vertimus to provide committing features. Actually IMHO, translators should test the module they translate so it is wise to have a checked out copy! Hi, strange that my very old wordsandmore.it e-mail was used ... that one does not work anymore. And I took it out from i-iter - really strange. Anyway the mailing list is empty, just because for now I am working with only one person, Carmine Colacino, and we have direct correspondance. But if further people come along we need a list, and so I added it in a place where I always have access to (already some time ago). I am monitoring that mailing list through mailman together with some other lists. Hello everybody, I'm trying to understand everything about git. Do someone know how I could batch-download all GNOME po directories? I made such a script for SVN, if someone made the same for git, it would be great. I'd love not to have to download whole repositories with a lot of files I don't need for translation. I have some questions/doubts/things I can't understand quite well right
now with git and how to use branches.
I was trying to commit+push a new Italian translation for gtk+ 2-16
branch, since looks like it has one string left:

I switched to origin/gtk-2-16 using this command:
git branch --track -b origin/gtk-2-16
Doing a 'git branch' I saw:
master
* origin/gtk-2-16
I downloaded the Italian file from damned-lies, 'git status' showed me
the modified file.
'git add po/it.po'
'git commit --signoff --author '
'git push'
Result: it said everything is up to date, nothing to push.
So I switched back to master, deleted the gtk-2-16 branch ('branch -D
origin/gtk-2-16'), re-checkedout the 2-16 and have done this:
git log
And I saw my last commit on 'master' while I'm on 'origin/gtk-2-16'. Is
this behaviour expected?
I have done also a 'msgfmt' on it.po, and the result is 997 translated
as 'master', but still I'm on gtk-2-16 and it should have been, for
Italian, 996 translated + 1 untranslated.
I double checked the PO-Revision-Date of the it.po in my local copy and
is the one I pushed on 'master', but 'git branch' says I'm on
'origin/gtk-2-16'.
What am I doing wrong here?

In Git, this is not possible. The move to Git requires to update our translation workflows. What I would suggest is to try to clone the repositories of the GNOME release, and keep those on your system. We now know the figures; the GNOME 2.26 Git repositories would take about 2.6GB on your disk. If you were to download these files in a compressed .tar.bz2, the file would be around 1.6GB. It would be quite straightforward to use a download manager and get a 1.6GB file. Then, you can use 'git pull --rebase' to easily update them when you need to. Yes, that's where I was doing wrong, I was doing:
git checkout -b origin/gtk-2-16
and git automatically use master as the base of the checkout even if you
don't specify it, that's why I was seeing my last commit. My local
checkout was called origin/gtk-2-16 but was a copy of master.
If I didn't screw up things, now my commit should be visibile on
gtk-2-16.

Many translators do compile their .po files and install them in their /usr/ filesystem, with popular distributions tracking the GNOME development versions, it is really a viable solution. What is the worst case scenario? While we have pre-commit hooks with msgfmt (and in damned-lies), translations can't break the applications. We don't need to worry about dialogue sizes like in the case of Mozilla applications. There are many things that should be checked in the interface, but I'm not aware of any really crucial ones. For me this is one of the strong points of working on GNOME. Of course, I always test the translations, but in the version of the GNOME application I currently have installed which is never the next one to be released. However, it means I get to test almost everything that is important in the running software without having to touch a development version, and I can focus on language issues - msgfmt and GTK will worry about the rest. Of course, I use everything available to do my translation well, like pofilter for technical review which tests things more exhaustively than msgfmt does, and try to get review from people from time to time. It could be that I'll want to look at development versions if my hardware and bandwidth situation improves or as I start working more on getting modules back to 100% from previously 100% translated ones. (Currently I'm often working from 0% or from long unmaintained ones.) While I'm mostly working on my own with limited ability to get the next versions, I think we are doing very well while maintaining very little overhead for translators. I don't think it is all that scary. Hoewver, I think could be good add a phrase like due to different behaviot betwenn git versions (1.5 vs 1.6), it's suggested to specify the filename of file to commit, using `git commit LL.po`. Anybody knows if translation updates for network-manager-* modules should be performed only in master branch, or in NETWORKMANAGER_0_7 branch too? In past days I've seen some commits from mainteiners copying po from master to 0.7 branch, and I don't know if this is a task they reserve for themself. PS any news about NetworkManager itself? new rhythmbox release soon
Hi, I plan to release rhythmbox 0.12.1 in about one week (no earlier than the 27th).
