The "System" menu
Where do I find and translate the string for the "System" menu on the upper GNOME panel? I want to change the string's translation. I have translated gnome-panel 100% and there's a msgid string there just after the "Applications" and "Places" strings that says "Desktop Enviorment|Desktop". I remember that this was the string that I fixed the last time I edited the file for the translation of GNOME 2.10 but now when I change it, compile the .po file and replace the exsisting .mo file in the latest breezy with the newly compiled .mo file I get the thing in English. Everything else is in the localized language but only that menu is in English. Is that the right string? I can't find a string in any of my .po files with msgid "System" and I don't see why I should look for this in another file than in gnome-panel. I've checked this in the bulgarian translation and there it was translated „Система“ but I couldn't find that string in the bulgarions .po files either. Help? Thanks. -Arangel ___ gnome-i18n mailing list gnome-i18n@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gnome-i18n

I prefer the "Desktop" one (and especially the translation of it to Serbian), but it's their call. This is not a Gnome problem, but rather, Ubuntu one. Otherwise, your Ubuntu translation team should translate it. You can also include by hand a translation for "System" into your PO file, and it MIGHT be picked up when Ubuntu guys update their translations. This reminds me to ask about something I've found difficult: if a user from my community writes in to say a particular string isn't working, or suggests translating it differently for contextual reasons, how do I find that string in my legion of PO files? It's relatively ;) easy to find it if we're talking about a specific application, but when it's a string in the Gnome environment itself, finding it is requires a global search, which can take a while, and require sorting through all the results to find the correct string. Is there any more effective way to find strings from the Gnome environment? Thankyou for any help you can offer with this. :) from Clytie (vi-VN, Vietnamese free-software translation team / nhóm Việt hóa phần mềm tự do) http://groups-beta.google.com/group/vi-VN ___ gnome-i18n mailing list gnome-i18n@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gnome-i18n

For example, if you are sure that this string is from /desktop: $ grep "string to be found" * | less Or if you want to search recursively use the -R option. This assumes that you keep all your translations in your repo or local directories, as grepping in a CVS working copy is painful. Thanks, Yavor: my text editor greps the strings for me, but the trouble is, some strings can occur in multiple places and/or in multiple files, so ploughing through the results takes up time I'd rather spend elsewhere. I was hoping there would be some pattern or way to identify a string's PO file from its location in the Gnome desktop. from Clytie (vi-VN, Vietnamese free-software translation team / nhóm Việt hóa phần mềm tự do) http://groups-beta.google.com/group/vi-VN ___ gnome-i18n mailing list gnome-i18n@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gnome-i18n
