Yes-- sorry.

I have since found another address for Yoruba: Abayomi Mobolaji
Onibudo (bonibz at hotmail dot com), given on
http://l10n.gnome.org/languages/yo/ .  I haven't tried to contact this

I've now merged translations for

epiphany
gnome-desktop
gnome-menus
gnome-panel
gnome-session
metacity
nautilus

into the HEAD of each, msgmerging each one with the .pot for HEAD.
Could the Damned Lies people tell the site that ig=Igbo and ha=Hausa,
please?

I did not merge evolution because it's LGPL (those I did merge are
GPL).  I did not merge anything else because they're non-GNOME
projects (unless I missed something) and so I don't have commit rights
for them.

Yes please. The big problem in the case of these languages is of
course the lack of volunteers, but perhaps some or partial
translations will at least help spur some interest. Thanks for your

I'd say this clears up the licensing concerns.  It's good to see people 
taking licensing seriously and doing the homework necessary to make sure 
GNOME's code is clean.

LICENSE field for the locales-ng package? (I'm afraid I don't remember
the exact syntax for that off the top of my head, sorry.)

(2) Chris, you mentioned there is "licensing information at the top"
of locales-ng.tgz, but I don't see it anywhere. Could you point out
exactly where it is/was?

(3) I notice that /usr/share/i18n/locales/ha_NG mentions a
pa...@mandriva.com- has anyone tried to contact Paolo (and/or
mandriva) to see if they know about this translation work? Or is that
just copied/pasted from somewhere else?

Generally, James Vasile and Aaron Williamson (of Software Freedom Law
Center) and I discussed this briefly today on the phone so we're
paying attention to the issue and hope we can give some more
definitive advice shortly. Obviously more definitive information (like
contacting the Wazobia folks directly, or finding a license file like
the one Chris suggests is present) would speed that up, or even
better, make it a non-issue :)

Thanks for the reminder; it's also a reminder for those of us talking
to Wazobia that we have to negotiate LGPL status with them in many
cases.  I will take care only to update GPL packages, if it's okay to
go ahead.

Chris:  Unless some of them are listed as LGPL?  Can you tell me the
licence that the RPM gives for, say, the Igbo translation of
gnome-desktop?  (It should be LGPL.)

So, I still think it is a good idea to contact the authors just to be
sure (if for no other reason than they may be able to help the
translations live on) but this seems like fairly decent confirmation
that the information is licensed appropriately and can be used.

with RPMs and I didn't think to look for that.  Good news!  All four
packages (3 translations and then locales-ng) are listed as GPL in the RPM.
I've uploaded the results of:

rpm -qi $packagename

for each package to
http://chrismurf.com/nigerian-translations/license-info.txt, but the
punchline is that all of them are listed as GPL in their respective
packages.

I chroot-ed into the image and played with rpm a bit - the files were
originally from a package called "locales-ng".  I don't know anything about
the localization process, but at least some of them look like source files
of some sort.  For somebody who knows more about localization, all the files
included in locales-ng are now in a tarball at :
http://www.chrismurf.com/locales-ng.tgz.  They also have licensing
information at the top, "Distribution and use is free, also for commercial
purposes."  If somebody can give me a better idea what I'm looking for
(provided this isn't it) I'm happy to keep digging.

Thanks for doing that.  The person who sent me the .mo and .po files 
told me he'd re-created the .po files using msgunfmt (a standard tool 
that decompiles back to .po for just such cases as these).

I mounted the disk image and poked around a bit.  There are no .po files in
the root filesystem, but there is a documentation folder:
/usr/share/doc/wazobia-release-1/ which contains licensing information,
including the GPL and a README/eula file that explain the contents of the
"CD" being licensed under the GPL.  It's pretty much all verbatim from an
FC4 image.  I've put a (temporary) tarball at
http://www.chrismurf.com/waz-rel1.tgz of that folder for others who want to
have a look.  Since they bothered to change the folder name to
wazobia-release-1, it seems like they have explicitly selected the GPL?

I've got the images mounted, and I'm happy to pull out other things if
that's useful.  The *.mo files are all there, but there's no *.po files.
