Friulian Translation: Help me!
Dear friends, I write why I'm in difficulty. I want to ask the following questions: 1) I take like example the file gnome-session.HEAD.pot. I translate the file, rename the file *.po, and then with the command msgfmt - cv I generate the file message.mo. Then I rename this file in gnome-session-2.0.mo and I copy it in the directory /usr/share/locale/it/LC_MESSAGE/ in order to try if the translate is right. But it does not work. What could be? 2) I have translate following files gnome-session, libgnomeui, and gnome-menus. Which others files I must translate to see some change to my GNOME? 3) I must find a friend voluntary that it can transmit mine files to the SVN of GNOME? There is someone disposed one to help me? I agree strongly with what Vladimir said and I can add that the Og also was responsible for the integration of the teams of translation of the Ubuntu and the Gnome. I believe faithful that the team needs other commiter. I know that it is not necessary to be to commiter to help the others, however exists work very to make, and that in the last months it was made almost that exclusively by the Leonardo, overloading it. And since both Guilherme and Lucas Rocha told me before we released 2.18 that I would be considered for the account, I was expecting something.. at least a note. For the last 12 months the major bulk (approx. 95%) of commits has been handled by one person: Leonardo Fontenelle. The other 5% was handled by Raphael Higino, who unfortunately passed away just recently. :/ During the last weeks before 2.20 we had the help of Jonh Wendell who helped tremendously with the last push. My request for an account is based on the fact that, with only Leonardo doing this job and his recent comment that he has plans to take on more personal matters and therefore not have the same amount of time available for the triaging/commit process, we will be extremely shorthanded! But anyhow, though I would be extremely disappointed if my request is denied for the second time, I basically expected a whole lot more consideration and at least a note explaining the reasoning behind it. So I kindly ask that the other Brazilian translators, including Leonardo, comment of the issue and if they think we have enought knowleageable people to do the work? Since we've been working together for the last 12 months and have first hand insight into the current situation, I think their feedback is valuable to attest if the decision has any merit or not. It is my wish to become a committer for the Brazilian team because I feel very strongly about the cause. I hoped that merit and trust would eventually lead me to this goal... the same way it helped me become a member of the Foundation. I am confident that you have contributed loads of valueable stuff, and I strongly hope that you will find the time and motivation to continue to do so. Unfortunately, merits alone are not sufficient for an account request. Since accounts come with great responsibility, they are also granted based on trust -- you will have to have convinced your maintainer/coordinator to trust you enough for an account. I hope this issue will get resolved, but that's a matter inside your team, and between you and your coordinator. If you cannot resolve it between yourselves, bring the issue upstream in the GTP. But don't bother the accounts team until your coordinator supports your request. And last but not least -- don't let this put you down. Keep up the good work and convince your coordinator that you need the account -- nothing is more convincing than loads of good, high quality and frequent contributions. Don't rely on some ticketing system. I do want to make some comments though: * it is not strange that if you request an translator account from the 'alacarte' maintainers that you fail to get a good response (although I would assume they would at least reject it) * if a ticket is closed, we don't go back after a year and reopen it * tickets are never 'lost' released 2.18 that I would be considered for the account, I was expecting something.. at least a note. The policy was basically that accounts are given following certain conditions: 1) based on current *need* for an account -- i.e. can you show that you have a need for an account. This is usually done by showing past contributions, but contrary to a reward, what's most interesting is if you need it *now*. Had it been a reward, then you could have contributed much in the past, but could stop tomorrow, but still be eligable. So just to make it absolutely clear, accounts are *not* a reward, they're based on current need (there was some comment about the account being a reward earlier in this thread, which worries me). 2) based on approval/vouching for by the maintainer. In the case of translations, the equivalent of a maintainer is your language team coordinator. The maintainer decides who he or she does trust. If your maintainer says no, then it *is* no. There's nothing the accounts team could or should do about that. Then it is not an accounts problem, but a team problem. Given 1) and 2), there's nothing in policy that said a single language team could only have one committer. But since large translation teams often tend to have a bigger need (1), that's usually why they tend to have more in practice. But the exact number could vary, based on how the team is organised. So Og, if you and the coordinator have clearly different opinions, then it is a team problem, not an accounts one. Please don't disturb the accounts people about the problem; they have much to do as is. If you and the coordinator have different opinions, you need to settle them first, before even requesting an account. That's how the system works. If you cannot settle them inside your team, and you're unhappy with the current coordinator, then you need to bring this up for discussion on gnome-i18n, so the team issue can be resolved. There was no matter of being 'young' involved - it would be silly and ironic if it did, after my being kept waiting indefinitely to join Debian just because I was 13 years old at the time -, but, among others, a matter of recent involvement with the project. As per our policy, in case you have not had time to read it, GNOME accounts are neither granted to prospective contributors, no matter how amazingly qualified and enthusiastic they are, nor as means of rewarding an individual for their valuable work. An account is a tool, and that's how it should be faced: a way to enable someone to do their work, which usually happens when it is so complex, large and frequent that making it go through the person it used to reduces efficiency. That was not the case, as you very well know. Furthermore, I am quite sure I mentioned what technical problems there were with your request. As I told you, I'm not sure this is how other translation teams do it, but in the Brazilian Portuguese translation team, the coordinator and the committers appointed by him have a very important responsibility in terms of quality assurance, and I had to spend considerable amounts of time reviewing your work back when you volunteered for commit access, which made me ask you to be a little more careful with your proofreading so that you could eventually suit the role. Christian, A small comment on what you said in your email. If the word of the administrator is the only valuable item you'd count towards granting someone svn access, than this process needs to be reviewed and dealt with as soon as possible, as it is prone to one single point of failure. Most free software processes unfortunately are prone to single point of failures, because they deal with volunteers. The contributors are volunteers, the coordinatores are volunteers, the maintainers are volunteers, and the accounts team are volunteers, and so on. We cannot afford, or do not have the mandate to dictate, redundancy for anything. So I think the current process works quite well, given the circumstances. It is not ideal, but I fail to see the alternatives. Furthermore, the community is based on trust. To get responsibility, you will have to have earned trust by people. The accounts team are, as I said, volunteers, and the accounts team deals with accounts for all of GNOME, and in some cases even things aren't GNOME but just happens to live in the same repository as GNOME. So they have quite a lot to do, and there's no way they can know all about GNOME. So, basically what the account team first does when they want to resolve an account request is look up what module or translation team the request is all about. Then they look up who is the relevant module maintainer, or the translation team coordinator, for that. Then they ask that person if they support the requestor's account request. That's the only way the account team can work -- they ask whoever's in charge for that part if they know and trust and support the requestor. So if that's not the case, the account request will be denied straight away. The accounts team does not resolve team issues. There's no way they could. Thus, if you feel there's something wrong with your team or team coordinator, you should bring it up in the Translation Project, but please do not bother the accounts team with it, because they're already overworked, and there's nothing they can do about it as long as there's a disagreement. So it is up to you as a contributor to bring the issue up where it can be resolved -- if not in your language team, then upstream in the GTP. Help me get SVN access for translations
All, I've been trying to get someone to grant me svn access for translations for 1 month and 19 days now. I have directly emailed the coordinator responsible for the Brazilian team but haven't gotten a reply yet. Lucas Rocha told me he would take care of it, since we assumed that the coordinator took some time off but it has been a while now and I believe he also took some time off. Which leaves me with this alternative: ask someone else to lend me a hand? I had created a ticket (before Mango) which can be viewed here: https://www.gnome.org/rt3//Ticket/Display.html?id=3789. I have also created a ticket in Mango thinking that my old ticket got lost somewhere along the migration... But I don't think that I will be possible to make it in time to make the 2.20.0 release anyway as far as I understand the they are already building the tarballs now, so I'm afraid you might as weel wait and have you own coordinator do it, and then they will be in the 2.20.1 packages. If you would do, there would be no use in assigning team-coordinators, because anyone could just override them. Summary : Summary of above all is that how can i use gtranslator to localize in URDU. You should still be able to use gtranslator to edit Urdu PO files. If not, please file bug reports against gtranslator in bugzilla. Thanks. I just installed language support for Urdu on my Ubuntu Linux 6.06 and it worked without a problem. You mention you tried to install the language support using Synaptic. The recommended way to install the language support is by going to System/Administration/Language Support and selecting Urdu. They are installed when you make install a package, so you'll need to recompile from source, or wait until your distributor includes your translation. For 2.13, I think the liveCD translation needs can be mostly summarized as: * one docbook xml 'guide to the liveCD', and maybe one other docbook file in the future (a 'reviewer's guide', but it doesn't exist yet.) * the boot texts for F1-F10 I think it would be cool if those two sets of content could be converted to use the standard translation framework, so that you guys could translate it, and then whoever builds the liveCDs can just cvs up, run make, and then build with the same scripts we currently do (or whatever the next generation of them is.) Is there anyone who could help us with that? There is 'content' like the slides, marketing pdfs, videos, music, etc., but none of those (as far as I know) are translatable in our normal manner right now. Translating those might be a matter of local teams finding equivalent content and just checking them in. Documentation (and translation) doesn't need freeze-break approval. There are no downsides to improving documentation at any time. In general, you should get approval from the maintainer before asking us, and tell us that you have the maintainer's approval. Up to i18n and docs team. Hi, I'm in the process of moving gnome-netstatus to gnome-doc-utils, but there's this file: http://cvs.gnome.org/viewcvs/gnome-netstatus/help/C/l10n.txt?view=markup It contains some informations for translators. Should I put a README.translators in help/ ? Or do you have already something for this kind of stuff? You don't merge it with Yelp, but rather, with the module that you are doing a translation for. It will then be installed when that module is compiled and installed. Eg. if I am translating file-roller documentation, and I have done that in a sr.po file, I'd put it into file-roller/help/sr/sr.po in Gnome CVS, and add sr to file-roller/help/Makefile.am DOC_LINGUAS variable. I was just planning on proposing something like that to Shaun, gnome-love guys, and d-d-l (so we have developers support). It's all very simple, and easy to test (it either builds, or it doesn't :). There are some other things we will probably want to do as well, such as switch from entities to xinclude (that will help keeping documents in several files even in translations), etc. but those are not high priority (eg. it will work, but we'll get one giant user-guide.xml for Gnome2 Users Guide). A IME method is, you will get international characters while inputting via standard en keyboard. A xkb method is something like a piple, which will convert what you input directly into corresponding Unicode characters. The widely used IME platform nowadays are iiimf[1] and scim[2]. Personally, I don't know whether it is easy or difficult writing a new IM under iiimf. AFAIK, with all the language materials provided, you can write a new IM under scim within two days.
