What O S are you installing into and what version are you installing?
The help files come along automatically in Windows and most Linux packages.

That lck file is the mechanism by which gnucash ensures that each file is
only opened once at a time. If that file is there, that means gnucash is
using the corresponding ".gnucash" file. Of course, if gnucash crashes and
is unable to delete that .lck file, it will superexist the gnucash process.
In this case, the correct choice is "open anyway", and copying everything
first is an excellent idea, too.

How to rename a budget?

2017-10-11 Thread gbguy
Is there any way to rename a budget so that when you "Actions->Budget->Open
Budget" you see a new name for the budget?

I've tried "Actions->Rename Page" but that does not change the name of the
budget. Google nor my searching of this forum yielded any help.

TIA

I just answered my own question..The lck file is a temporary file when
the main file is opened.  I opened my file read only, resaved it. closed it and
the lck file went away.  I opened the file in a smaller window so I coiuld see
my directory and the lck file appeared again..it went away when I closed
the file..so.what was happening was, when the program crashed, it
did not close the lck file, and when I tried to reopen it, it thought it was in
usewala..Im back in business...

Scheduled Transactions, Variables and Formulas

2017-10-11 Thread Cheryl Wheeler
I am playing with variables and formulas in scheduled transactions. I
created a test SX using the example shown here
(https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Scheduled_Transactions#Bank_Account_Interest).
When I tried to save the SX, GnuCash gave me an error message saying
that it couldn't parse the formula. After some experimentation, I found
that the problem seems to be the use of the variable "i" when passed as
a parameter to the function "computeInterestIncrement". If I change i to
a numeral, then the formula parses; if I use i alone (no function call),
it parses.

The example in the wiki is from 2005. Assuming that it once worked, have
there been intentional changes such that it is no longer expected to
work, or would this be a bug? I am using GnuCash 2.6.15 on Windows 7.

Re: Customized saved-reports file per gnucash file (i.e. per company)

Heh. I do keep my accounts files on a NFS share (indeed, lots of my ~ lives on
my fileserver). Never really thought of it as "the cloud". That term has to
me at least, always been the "cloud" shape in network diagrams at the other
end of my connection to the internet - meaning the bit I know is there but
isn't under my control.

However, discussing where the file(s) live doesn't really help with the OP's
problem of needing to create several identical reports on several data files,
which because the reports work on accountID not name, and the reports are not
per-file but global is just plain cumbersome...

Amish - the only thing I think I can suggest at this point is that each
company has it's own user login - at least that way the list of accounts is
not cumbersome.. Or thinking about it, if on linux (may work on Win, probably
not on Mac), you could create some shortcuts for each accounts file that sets
up a custom environment (i think you need to set GNC_DOT_DIR bit have a good
google first) before launching GC so that each company has its own prefs file.
probably more cumbersome than a really busy menu, and error-prone, though,,,

Maf.

Changing the database schema is not supported. You should also be aware that
GnuCash sometimes needs to rewrite the database from scratch and when it does
any schema changes you’ve made will be lost.

That said you could create an auxiliary table mapping the fully-qualified
account names to their GUIDs (which is what you want for querying the splits
table) and GnuCash will ignore it. You’d need to write a recursive tree walking
query to do that. It might be possible in a single query but that’s way beyond
my SQL-fu; I’d wrap the SQL in a scripting language—perl or python depending on
my mood at the moment—to start off with a clean table, compute the tree, and
populate it.

If you use joins on the guid values to the parents then you should be
able to get them directly using the appropriate queries.

Question on mysql "account" table

2017-10-11 Thread Joseph Hesse
Here is an example of what I am trying to do.  My expenses in gnucash
have items that look like:

Expenses
  Auto
    Gas
    Service

When I look in the mysql accounts table I can find the record containing
Service but no easy way to find Expenses:Auto:Service. The record
containing Service in the accounts table has the item parent_guid so I
could use that to locate the parent classification of Service, which is
Auto. I can repeat the process until I get a complete description of the
account.

My questions is: Is there sophisticated query where I can add a column
to the accounts table containing the full name instead of just the name?

I know I can do what I want in a programming language like PHP or C++
but I want to know if there is something easier.

The reason for my questions is I am creating a custom expense report by
joining the accounts, splits and transactions table and I want the
expense name to have a full path description.

Thank you,
Joe
