Unfortunately, the Finance::Quote module is entirely broken by the Yahoo API 
removal.  There must be something about the Yahoo source that is mandatorily 
required or hardwired into the module.  You can change all your securities to 
check alternate sources with none of them querying the Yahoo source and the 
module still fails.

Yahoo sells advertising and provides quotes to their user community that
reads their ads.  We must be missing some interface bit to say what our
yahoo email is.  Someone in the development chain should investigate this at
Yahoo.  Maybe they will relent until they can support such an id.

Quotes from other sources is fine, but what is the source.  A lot of
companies sell this sort of data in various forms, so we need to be careful
before depending on a transient free source.

finance might be an option?

I understand that the loss of the Price::Quote module is only indirectly 
related to what the Gnucash developers work on.? But the loss has now 
diminished the Gnucash ability to function as a investment tracker.? The 
product is now lesser in function than it has been historically.
I would think the developers would want to at least maintain its functions and

For the mutual funds, source of "Morningstar, GB" is still working good to me.

But I tried lots of source options for my stocks, none is working now.

The report you wish does exist. From transaction report:

Account/Account – choose Expenses placeholder, click “Select Children”
Account/Filter By... – choose your creditcard(s) (either, or both)
Account/Filter Type – include transactions to/from filter account

Took a bit of manipulating outside of gnucash, but that did the trick thank
you!  I dumped the data table into excel, aggregated by month and by
account using some lookups and a pivot table, and got exactly what I
needed, thank you!  I earn different cash back amounts on my credit cards
based on the category of spend, so wanted to match the gnucash data up
against the credit card summaries to see how closely they match.

Without looking at specific options, how about the Transaction report, run on 
the CCard account and sorted using "Other Account" as the primary key?

might get close to waht you are after?

If you check the other thread on this user maillist, you will find more
information.

In the meantime the simplest work-around is to log in to your favorite
finance website, get the prices that you need and manually enter them in to
GnuCash.

I am not happy about that either.

I always seem to have a difficult time figuring out which report to use.
For this instance, I'm looking to see what I've spent by category, but
restricted to just what's paid by a credit card.  For instance, I want
groceries purchased on Visa rather than just all grocery purchases.  So all
expenses that are in a specific liability account.

  * Clothing total spend
  * Restaurants total spend

This is a known error that just started 2 days ago when Yahoo discontinued
their quote service.
There is no current workaround except finding another quote source for
your stocks.
Moreover, this is an F::Q issue, not a gnucash issue.

I'm on Debian testing and had just recently updated my system, to which 
I get the message:

"There was an unknown error while retrieving the price quotes"

$ gnucash --debug
Found Finance::Quote version 1.38

$ gnucash -v
GnuCash 2.6.15
This copy was built from rev 1ef17e6+ on 2016-12-21.

$gnc-fq-dump -v yahoo GILD
No results found for stock GILD.

$ gnc-fq-dump morningstar GILD
Finance::Quote fields Gnucash uses:
    symbol: GILD (deduced)   <=== required
  date: ** missing **    <=== recommended
  currency: ** missing **    <=== required
  last:  <=\
   nav:  <=== one of these
 price:  <=/
  timezone:  <=== optional

** This stock quote cannot be used by GnuCash!

Any advice for a fix would be much appreciated.

this is also fundamentally not a GC problem - in the sense that when a user 
clicks to get a quote, an external tool is used, called Finance::Quote, which 
grabs data from somewhere on the web (Yahoo isn't the only place that F::Q can 
look, although it was a very good place), processes it and feeds it back to 
GC.  F::Q is used by many more projects than just GC.

it seems to me from reading around a bit, Yahoo! have completely disabled a 
part of their service - even bits of the Yahoo! website that use the affected 
API have been reportedly broken by this.  Left hand & right hand at Yahoo!, 
don't seem to know what each other is doing

I know it doesn't seem this way when the program suddenly stops working, but 
this is also fundamentally not a GC problem - in the sense that when a user 
clicks to get a quote, an external tool is used, called Finance::Quote, which 
grabs data from somewhere on the web (Yahoo isn't the only place that F::Q can 
look, although it was a very good place), processes it and feeds it back to 
GC.  F::Q is used by many more projects than just GC.

The fix (if there is one) needs to be in the PERL Finance::Quote module, not GC 
itself.  Of course, all the users of GC (who seek external price info from 
Yahoo!) are affected by this, me included.  But there are others, too, who 
don't use GC that do use F::Q, who are just as affected.

The issue has been reported on the F::Q  list/forum, so the relevant 
developers are in the loop.

What would be really nice of Yahoo! to do is give out some (any!) info about 
the use-case they have taken exception to, which has led to this sudden 
decision to cause many, many people some considerable frustration.

All told, I'm getting the service from Yahoo! that I paid for. :-(  

I think, as Geert said earlier, once the dust has settled, IMHO, Erik & the 
F::Q team will outline a plan eventually.  In the meantime, as unfortunate as 
it is, we are where we are, and a bit of level-headed patience is called for.

While I understand this affects many gnucash users, it is not something that 
can or should be solved in gnucash directly. Gnucash doesn't directly use the 
Yahoo! service. Gnucash uses the finance::quote tool which manages several 
price sources, one of which being Yahoo!.

I think we'll have to wait until the dust settles down before we can take 
sensible action. Clearly the people accessing the service directly are 
discussing with Yahoo! itself. I also don't know what finance::quote will 
decide to do from here. Will they grab quotes from another service or not ? 
This should all be cleared first IMO.

I'm sorry this brings such an inconvenience in the mean time.

Please remember to copy the list on all replies.

Ah, to copy data to a spreadsheet, run a report (the transaction report is a 
obvious choice for your example) and copy the report.

An alternative for spreadsheets is to export data as CSV (File>Export>Export 
Transactions to CSV…) though you may find the result of that a bit difficult to 
use as it puts each transaction in multiple rows, one per split.

One more thing: No, GnuCash doesn’t “call their categories accounts”. GnuCash 
is a double-entry accounting program and you need to understand double-entry 
accounting to be able to use it effectively. The Tutorial and Concepts Guide 
available from the help menu and www.gnucash.org  
provides a very basic introduction. You should at least study that; some new 
users find that they need to get a basic accounting text or to take an 
introductory course to properly understand the principles.

...because Gnucash developers are volunteers. They need to find the time 
to do so and it probably takes a lower priority over other issues.

I see that there is a free API from Alpha Vantage.  Why can't the Gnucash
developers incorporate that API as a substitute for the discontinued Yahoo
Finance API?

While I understand this affects many gnucash users, it is not something that 
can or should be solved in gnucash directly. Gnucash doesn't directly use the 
Yahoo! service. Gnucash uses the finance::quote tool which manages several 
price sources, one of which being Yahoo!.

I think we'll have to wait until the dust settles down before we can take 
sensible action. Clearly the people accessing the service directly are 
discussing with Yahoo! itself. I also don't know what finance::quote will 
decide to do from here. Will they grab quotes from another service or not ? 
This should all be cleared first IMO.

I'm sorry this brings such an inconvenience in the mean time.

Remember that you have no inalienable right to expect the developers
to do anything about it (or any right at all to expect that for that
matter). They are all unpaid volunteers doing the work for the benefit
of all of us and deserve our undying gratitude for their efforts.
