Re: Pre-introduction question to the use of GnuCash.

2017-11-21 Thread Dave H
Hi Jeff,

I use the exact same file on Windows 7 & 10, Mac High Sierra and Ubuntu
17.04 Linux without a problem.

I'm using Dropbox currently to synchronise the file between pc's so don't
really have to worry about opening a file on a network drive from different
machines simultaneously, I just have to remember to synchronise it locally
on whatever pc I happen to be on at the time :-)

Cheers Dave H.

Pre-introduction question to the use of GnuCash.

2017-11-21 Thread Jeff Hobson
I would like to start using this program in my home environment. The computers
in use here are divided between MAC and Windows10. The basic question is if the
two versions (MAC & Windows) can share the same data files if they both can
access a mutually connected Network disk. Clearly if there is no conflict in
the basic application, a true conflict would arise if both platforms were
modifying the data at the same time. That caveat, understood is the real
barrier to mutual and simultaneous access.

Thank you for your attention and advice

Re: Restarting a Scheduled Transaction - possible ?

2017-11-21 Thread David Carlson
AEG,

I have succeeded in re-using scheduled transactions but there are some
limitations. In your case, I think that using the for some number of
occurrences may be what is preventing further use of that SX. I have never
used that box. Last Occurred is only settable by the program so once it
has set that, I think there is no way to change the SX to add another
occurrence before that date.

As you have surmised, it is likely easier to duplicate a recent occurrence
in the register and create a new SX from that.

Re: Could not obtain the lock

2017-11-21 Thread David Carlson
I believe that others will concur that you do not have write permission in
the folder containing that data file. Is your user name User?

That is also why GnuCash failed to create a .LCK file. You need to make a
new folder on your desktop, call it Moira_GnuCash_Data or similar and use
file manager to save a copy of the data file there. Alternatively, when
you have the file open in GnuCash just do a Save As... into a new folder on
your desktop. You will not be able to save any data until you do that.

Restarting a Scheduled Transaction - possible ?

2017-11-21 Thread aegross
Greetings, I had a scheduled transaction that ran for x months and has now
ended. I would like to restart the transaction with some changes. I used
the SX editor to change the start date but the transaction would not restart
-- I tried restarting gnucash to start the next series of transactions, but
nothing happens. Also tried running the "since last run" command but that
didn't help.

Running GC v2.6.17 on Mac OS Sierra (10.12.6)

Parameters around the transaction:

OVERVIEW tab
- "enable" checkbox is checked
- the new date (that I set trying to restart the transaction) persists after
restarting GnuCash and is currently one day (11/22) in the future.
- "create automatically" is checked
- "create in advance" is set to 15 days.
- last occurred (which I can't change), is actually 2 days in the future
(11/23) and was an error when the original transaction was created; before
trying to restart the transaction series I had deleted this incorrect entry
in the account.
- Under "For", it's set to 12 occurrences.

FREQUENCY TAB
- "Start" date is set to 11/22/17 (had been 11/23/16 originally)
- Every "1" months
- On the "22nd", except "no change"

Am thinking either scheduled transactions can't be restarted (or recycled)
OR having the SX editor think the last transaction occurred after the next
scheduled transaction (the first transaction in the new series) is a
problem.

After writing all this I am thinking the answer is probably just to delete
and redo the SX; any other ideas?

Thanks,
AEG

Re: GnuCash question

2017-11-21 Thread Dean Gibson
Exactly!  Since there are two periods in the version number, they cannot
possibly be a decimal fraction indicator.  Each number (major version,
minor version, & revision level) are separate whole numbers.

If one is using Windows 10, go to the "System" page & note the current
Microsoft version: 10.16299.64.  Soon the revision level (typically
every time an update forces a reboot) will be over 100, just like for
earlier builds.  There is never a leading zero, because each number is a
whole number, not a decimal fraction.

This is a standard industry way of denoting the major version, minor
version, & revision level.

I think most people would readily understand that 3 is less than 18.

2.6.18 means the 18th revision of the 6th version of release 2.

If the future versions of gnucash proceed up to "2.10", I don't think the
developers should expected to go back and renumber 2.1 to 2.01; 2.2 to 2.02; etc.; Nor
should they have been expected to start that numbering at the outset not knowing if they
would even get to a 2.10 before getting to release 3.0

Yes, 2.6.18 is newer. Each number between the periods is a separate

number and 18 is greater than 3.

In general, do not download the 2.7.x versions as those are beta

releases for the next version unless you are testing those with other
data (i.e., don't run a 2.7 with the only copy of your actual data
file).

Am I missing something? Is that more recent than 2.6.3?

That fix is only needed if you're running an old version. The easier

solution is to download the latest gnucash for Mac which no longer
requires that fix.

Copying it to another computer requires knowledge of where the data

file you are using is stored. If your only goal is to get gnucash
running again, just install the latest version on the High Sierra
computer. If you still want to move it to another computer, we'll need
to figure out where your data file is installed. I'm not at a computer
with gnucash installed right now so I can't check how to tell that.

Interesting interpretation of what the period (or 'dot') symbol means as

Re: GnuCash question

2017-11-21 Thread Alan Whiteman
I think the confusion is that .3 is generally accepted (here in the
U.S., anyway) as "0.30".

so .3 = .30

Perhaps the number method should be 2.6.03 instead of 2.6.3... For the
future, of course.

Yes, 2.6.18 is newer. Each number between the periods is a separate number and
18 is greater than 3.

In general, do not download the 2.7.x versions as those are beta releases for
the next version unless you are testing those with other data (i.e., don't run
a 2.7 with the only copy of your actual data file).

I see your workaround is to just update to the newest version of GnuCash. Which

I have version 2.6.3, installed March 2014. And the GnuCash homepage shows the

  Hello,

I’ve used Gnucash for several years and I love it. But, I’m a complete novice
about the technical side of Gnucash and I need very basic help. I understand
that the following is a fix or work around my recent problem:

  copy /usr/lib/libz.1.dylib to Gnucash.app/Contents/Resources/lib

However, I don’t know what the above line means nor how to implement it. In
other words, how do I copy /usr/lib/libz.1.dylib to
Gnucash.app/Contents/Resources/lib?

I’m embarrassed to admit my lack of knowledge, but I would need a step by
step description in order to fix this problem on my MacBook Pro.

I don’t even know the version of Gnucash that I’m running. I don’t want to
lose my data from the last few years. Is it safe to try to reinstall Gnucash
with the latest version?

I’ve thought about moving my Gnucash data from my current computer to another
Mac that’s running an older operating system than High Sierra, but I don’t even
know how to begin to do that.

Thanks, in advance, for any assistance you can give me. I’ve copied this
message to my regular email address so I won’t miss any replies. Thanks again.

  Peter

That fix is only needed if you're running an old version. The easier solution
is to download the latest gnucash for Mac which no longer requires that fix.

Copying it to another computer requires knowledge of where the data file you
are using is stored. If your only goal is to get gnucash running again, just
install the latest version on the High Sierra computer. If you still want to
move it to another computer, we'll need to figure out where your data file is
installed. I'm not at a computer with gnucash installed right now so I can't
check how to tell that.

HTH,
Dave

2017-11-21 Thread Christoph R
Dear Sean,

2.6.18 has a higher version number than 2.6.3 (18 > 3!).

And yes, you will need 2.6.18 to run gnucash on High Sierra.

One small point, it *can* matter whether a file works on a single user
machine or not depending how it was copied from one to the other. If a
transfer was performed with something like a USB memory stick that is
formatted using FAT or FAT32 then there should not be any problems as
ownership information is stripped when using those storage formats.
However, if the transfer was performed with an NTFS formatted memory
stick or if it was a network copy that can maintain NTFS attributes then
there will be a problem.

Windows stores ownership information internally as GUIDs which will be
unique across all machines assuming the user account was created
directly (not enterprise user management). It doesn't matter whether
the machine is "single user" or "multi user", every locally created user
has a GUID that other machines won't know about.

Re: Could not obtain the lock

2017-11-21 Thread David Carlson
Moira,

The lock file is always in the same folder as the data file and it always
has the same name as the data file with the suffix .LCK Unless you are
doing something very unusual, the files will be visible in your file
explorer as long as you put them somewhere in your user folder on your
local machine ('C' Drive) or on a removable device. If you are using cloud
storage, you may have a problem with the configuration.

In Windows the user name matters when there are more than one user on the
same machine, but on single user machines it does not matter if the files
were created in another machine under a different user name.

What do you mean by "it asks me to save the file as a new file"? Have you
been clicking on "File > Save" and immediately getting a message to "Save
As.." or does the "Save" button go grey and the asterisk that was in front
of the file name in the top banner disappear?.

If you do get the "Save As..." prompt, just save it to a different folder
under your desktop temporarily until you can find the problem.

Exactly how do you exit the program? Are the transactions you entered
recently reappearing when you re-open the file? Do you start the program
by clicking on the program icon or on the data file icon or a shortcut to
the data file?
