Jack,
the tutorial and cocepts guide can be found here

There is also the reference manual here

If you are not already familiar with double entry accounting the wikipedia

Re: [GNC] [GNC-dev] GnuCash 3.0 wine versus Windoze 10

2018-04-18 Thread DaveC49
David

It is not really all that difficult to build a version from scratch if you
are on Linux. I'm on Linux Mint and the distro package version is often
behind the current stable.

There are a few little twists with setting up googletest and the move from
Autotools configure to CMake for the build. There are a lot of references to
those on the Gnucash-Dev list in some of my posts and others along with John
and Geert's responses. The wiki page on building with Ubuntu
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Building#Ubuntu_16.04_LTS_.28Xenial_Xerus.29
and the Wiki page on CMake https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/CMake ( here Cmake
is described as experimental but it is now the preferred build route.

I am going to try and review the ubuntu build page in the light of my
experience building v3.0 over the last week so that some of the issues I
encountered are addressed if the wiki maintainers agree agree.

I was also confused about the to: address for my original post, but it
seems for whatever reason SeaMonkey wants to change the address from the
list address to what you see in the header.

I re-checked the income account and it does correctly record the date
and the account Assets:Current Assets:Checking Account

Re: [GNC] Downloading Mac Intel Version 3 gives me 2.6.19

2018-04-18 Thread Glen Byram (Gmail)
Hi John,

Thanks for the verification. As I guessed, probably something I did.

I have been using Gnucash for a couple of years. I always update to latest
version in exactly the same way. Open the disk image file, copy the 2
applications to my Applications folder, overwriting them when prompted. I have
no idea why it didn’t work last time. Even did the copy twice to make sure.

Anyway, I copied the app from the 3.01 dmg file to the desktop and opened it
from there instead. It worked fine and was indeed 3.01. So, I moved it from the
desktop to the Application folder (overwriting existing) and all is OK.

Thanks,

Glen Byram.

Try doing something to force the checking account register to refresh. (create
a new transaction, for example)

I think a better description of your problem is that the scheduled transaction
processing doesn’t force a refresh of any open registers. Any action that does
cause a display update will likely reveal the ‘missing' transaction.

There is a bug entered about it. It might be gtk3 specific, as I haven’t
noticed it prior to gnucash 3.0.

Gnucash-user@gnucash.org as an addressee but it seems to have been
forwarded to me through the maillist so I suppose everyone has gotten a
copy.

Second, while you say that you only saw the new transaction in the income
account, you did not say whether it had the correct date , whether there
was a transfer account visible there, and whether it was the asset account
that you expected it to be. This could be an important clue to whatever is
causing this apparent anomaly.

Re: [GNC] Is it safe to update?

2018-04-18 Thread DaveC49
Hi ,
I upgraded from v2.6.19 to v3.0 recently. I had some initial build problems,
mainly to do with not having cleared out the previous versions libraries and
my own lack of understanding of CMake, but otherwise pretty painless. No
problems opening my datafiles and so far looks good. There have been changes
in the storage of the user data (different location but it automatically
creates the new user data for v3.0 and gives you the option of retaining the
previous data in place should you need to revert) but as far as I know none
in the main (XML) data file.

[GNC] Version 3.0 does not record a scheduled transaction properly on Windows 10

2018-04-18 Thread Keith N. McKenna
I have a scheduled transaction that fires on the third Wednesday of the
month to record my Social Security disbursement. The transaction is set
to create automatically. Today when I opened GnuCash it informed me
that the transaction was created yet when I look in the Checking Account
the deposit is not recorded. When I check the Income Account the other
half of the transaction is recorded properly. I do not see this listed
as a known problem in the Release Announcement for 3.0. Should this be
submitted as a bug? GnuCash version is:Version: 3.0.

Thank you for all the suggestions.  I will wait as suggested for version
3.1.

For now I will continue with native 2.6.17 under Ubuntu, now my server,
and 2.6.19 on my Windoze laptop.  They seem to be pretty much compatible
for transactions entry, allowing me to use the same data files from
either system.

And for the record, all of the "Linux" variants run faster than the
current version of Windoze 10!!

Gotta get back to doing the books and finding a way to resurrect the
boot strap on the Windoze drive so I can extract the last of the data
from proprietary formats.

Again, my thanks to all of you for the suggestions

I'm running openSUSE Tumbleweed, where we get the latest and greatest
willy-nilly unless we affirmatively "pin" applications. Aside from the
tab names oddity and the fact that the summary bar for mutual fund
accounts treats everything as being 1 dollar per share, I've found no
show-stoppers with version 3.

Of course, being out here on the bleeding edge, I have an elaborate
backup scheme, paper records, and a selection of other distros (even
the two expensive OSs that shall not be named) on this and other
computers to fall back on if things blow up.

So far, no problems. I like the new look, and things seem a bit faster
too.

I'm on Windows and have decided to wait a few months so that some of the
bugs can get worked out. I did compile v3 on Linux and didn't have any
issues with using it on a copy of my main datafile, but for "production" I
don't think it hurts to wait a bit. There are some really interesting
features in v3 I'd like to play with (and I will on my Linux VM) but I'm

Re: [GNC] New User Needs Set-Up Help

2018-04-18 Thread Fross, Michael
Hello Jack,

Please remember to reply to all or at least include the GNUCash-User list
in your responses.

GNC is just like most applications. There is a program. There are program
settings. And there is the data file. No different that a word
processor. I suppose one difference is that when you startup GNC, it
automatically loads the last data file you were working on. This is
fantastic.

As David mentions, if you want to start a brand new empty data file, just
choose File | New File and create one. It's really that easy. If you use
your OS to delete the old file, then it can't "auto-open" in the tool and
you'll have to create a new one. Just make sure you know where you've
placed it. It should be in it's own folder so the backups that occur
continually don't clutter up other folders.

If you actually want to remove GNC from your system, just remove it like
you would remove other programs. However the setting and datafile will
remain and I don't think that will buy you anything.

That's more general linux knowledge than gnucash knowledge...

There are two parts to this:
* for the command line, your shell will search for executables in a list of
directories called "the path". This list is specified in environment variable
PATH.
You can do 'echo $PATH' (without the quotes) to learn in which directories the
shell will search.
If you installed gnucash anywhere but in the system default /usr/bin, chances
are the system won't find it. The solution is to adjust the search path for
executables. You can search the internet for plenty of examples how you can do
that.

* For the graphical environment on the other hand, the "launchers" you mention
are typically *.desktop files. These files hold some meta information on a
program and also how to execute it. Gnucash is no exception: the build creates
one such file in /share/applications/gnucash.desktop.
However like the shell, your graphical environment will only look in standard
directories and it's unlikely that is where you installed gnucash if you built
it yourself. To remedy this, you can copy the desktop file to
$HOME/.local/share/applications, where your graphical desktop should pick it
up.

There is a second issue with this desktop file though: it will try to run
'gnucash' without a full path specification (like '/bin/
gnucash'). This means your system will again fall back to part one: use the
PATH environment variable to locate a gnucash executable. This can be fixed by
either adjusting the "Exec" line in the desktop file to contain a full path or
by setting the PATH variable. Which one to take is a bit personal preference
and other system conditions (are there multiple versions of gnucash on your
system for example).

Geert

Re: [GNC] .log files with sqlite backend

2018-04-18 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
Alen,
I think you have identified a potentially significant issue with log files and
sql data files.  Specifically, with xml files, full snapshots are saved
periodically, and log files are paired with these snapshots to enable a user to
"replay" actions to recover a previous state.
It is unclear what log file playback would do to an sql data file, since the
only saved file is constantly updated. I worry that it would result in a
corrupted file, since I imagine it would in essence reapply a subset of
transactions onto the file.
I'd be happy to be told I am wrong, but if this would be the result, perhaps it
would be advisable for gnucash not to create log files for any sql back end.

that, I had a script that creates backups of sqlite book in the same manner

Now, back to using sqlite book, I notice the difference: the .log files get
created but not the backup files. Is this intentional or accidental?

I guess it is still possible to replay the .log files that contain the
missing transactions (in case of an error). Has anyone actually tried this
with an sqlite book?

It's just that the automatic backup files are not generated. For this I have
a Python script that does exactly the same as xml backup - it appends the
date/time to the file name and copies it to the backup folder, and keeps the
last n copies. I should probably redo that to work based on time and keep
last n days, for example.

Just looking to get some background info to confirm the best recovery
procedure in case of a failure.
Cheers

Right, thanks, I assumed something along those lines. How does that affect
replaying the .log files, though? Is this something that could be safely
done or is it something to be avoided with sql backends?
I'm asking because -better safe than sorry. And it is still easier to ask
than to try it out and analyse the consequences. Perhaps somebody walked
down that road before. :)

Generally, you'd add a .desktop into ~/.local/share/applications.

Here's one article that expands on that:

It’s a side effect of the difference between a database and an XML file. The
XML file is read in at the beginning of the session and a new one is written
back out every n minutes and at the end of the session. The previous file is
renamed at the first save, becoming the backup.

With a database, including a SQLite3 file, the storage is under the control of
the database engine. In order for GnuCash to make a backup it would need to
explicitly copy the SQLite3 file; even that wouldn’t necessarily be possible
for a MySQL or Postgresql database.

If you install the version from the Ubuntu repository it will provide
a file /usr/share/applications/gnucash.desktop. Copy this file to
~/.local/share/applications and edit the Exec = line to point to your
executable. Also edit the Name = field as that is the name that
appears when you hover over the launcher so you can make sure it is
the right one. Drag the desktop file to the launcher and you should
be good to go. You might have to make it executable, I am not sure.

In fact to save you installing it I have pasted it below. The icon
might not work if you have not installed gnucash normally, so you
might need to find an icon somewhere.

Now I actually built from the tarball and got 3.0. Sorry for this noob

Ah, yes, thanks. As on the new installation of OpenSuse Tumbleweed, GnuCash
v3 was installed by default, I thought it was a done deal.

Well, considering there is a working RPM package of v3 available somewhere
on OpenSuse repositories, would something like this work:
https://www.rosehosting.com/blog/how-to-install-rpm-packages-on-ubuntu/ ?

2018-04-18 Thread David Carlson
I believe Jeffrey stated in his first post that release 3.0 has a feature
that is missing from 2.6.xx that is important to him. Since it is not yet
available in any repo, that is why he wants to try wine. It seems that he
is not in a position to wait for packaged versions of 3.1.

Does anyone have useful suggestions for a user in that position?

[GNC] GnuCash 3.0-1 on Mac OS X 10.13.4: can't parse user file

2018-04-18 Thread Anthony Dardis
First, many many thanks for this great program! Have been using it for
years.

3.0-1 installed on my machine, opened, looks beautiful, can navigate
around in my file. Saved the file, closed program. On reopening, GnuCash
reported that it couldn't parse user file. I tried opening my file using
2.6.19 and got the same (or a very similar) message. So I restored the
file from a backup and have gone back to 2.6.19.

Refer to http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Bugzilla to learn how to use bugzilla
The "nightlies" in this case would be version "git-maint".

Re: [GNC] [GNC-dev] GnuCash 3.0 wine versus Windoze 10

2018-04-18 Thread Alen Siljak
Jeffrey, perhaps a stupid question - why don't you install a native linux
version of GnuCash instead of running a Windows version under Wine?
I use the same xml/sql book with linux and windows versions interchangably and
there are no issues (that I can see, at least!).
Also, just for comparison, Windows version loads my book in ~30 seconds while
linux version loads the same book in 5. You may even benefit from an increased
performance.

Versions 3.0 and 2.6.19 are not compatible. Version 2.6.21 should be, though.
However, can't confirm that 100% as I've moved to 3.0 and it worked ok for me
so far.

Re: [GNC] [GNC-dev] GnuCash 3.0 wine versus Windoze 10

2018-04-18 Thread Colin Law
Gnucash runs better on a Linux system than it does on Windows. My
understanding is that it is Linux s/w adapted to run on Windows. So if you
want to run Ubuntu ( which is an excellent idea) then run GC natively on
that, not under wine. You will be able to install gnucash from the
software manager, it will install a 2.x version not 3.x as that has not yet
worked its way into the repositories.

For recovering your data boot of a live Ubuntu DVD/USB stick and then you
will be able to copy the files off the disc onto another stick or network
drive.

I suggest using the same backup procedure that you use to backup the rest
of your documents so that you always have recent backups of the file. The
accounts file is no different from any other important documents and data
you have on your system.

I use backintime [1] but there are many other options.

[GNC] Transaction Engine (Making Tax Digital)

2018-04-18 Thread Richard Crozier via gnucash-user

Dear HMRC,

When the transaction engine protocol for implementation of Making Tax
Digital is released, will you be releasing a free software library which
will represent a reference implementation of the protocol?

I assume you must of course have such a library for internal testing.
Releasing such a library will be essential to allow free software
communities to develop tools to implement the new Making Tax Digital
paradigm. This would also demonstrate your commitment to not adding
significant additional costs to small businesses through the
implementation of Making Tax Digital.

What licence will the reference library be released under, and in what
programming language will it be implemented?

I have CC'd the gnucash mailing list for their reference (gnucash is one
of the leading free and open source accounting packages).

Best regards,

Richard Crozier

If your data is so crucial to you, I would suggest to wait for gnucash 3.1.
There are several issues with 3.0, particularly on Windows but also on other
platforms that are currently being ironed out.

As to whether gnucash 3.0 will work under wine, I don't know. I'm sure it
would be challenging: gnucash is a native linux application which is ported to
Windows. So most issues are expected on Windows anyway. If you then run that
gnucash edition on a system the only *emulates* Windows, you're adding yet
another layer of untested conditions. Not something I would advice if your
your marriage depends on your gnucash data.

[GNC] GnuCash 3.0 wine versus Windoze 10

2018-04-18 Thread jeffrey black
Before I do something incredibly stupid, like I did in hard crashing my
Windoze server because of a virus (IRS search miss-key, go figure), and
the boot partitions seem to be non-repairable even though all data and
programs are still on disk.  (And yes, I know stupid of me to not have a
current backup).  I still have legacy apps with data stored internally
that are not extractable without Windoze and without a reliable backup
per partition, per drive, I am not going to touch those drives until I
can find a way to recover everything.

Can GnuCash 3.0 be run under Wine on Ubuntu Xenial?  3.0 has features
that I need.  It wants to install on only my Windoze dives which I will
not do until I have all of the data extracted. I have been unable to
build 3.0 from source code.  (yes I know Mint is a better choice but;
until I recover all of the data from Windoze I am not changing, Ubuntu
is up and running, Hallelujah, on it's own dedicated drive).

Second Question:  My laptop still has Windoze 10 home, so can I install
GnuCash 3.0 on it and use it with Windoze GnuCash Version 2.6.19 data
files on the server files which are still accessible via Ubuntu file
share with Windoze 10?  Are the data files compatible?  I have 20+ years
of data that I definitely can not afford to loose (think divorce).

[GNC] .log files with sqlite backend

2018-04-18 Thread cicko
While I was using xml backend in the past couple of weeks, I finally realized
how backup files and .log files work. I really like the scheme as, before
that, I had a script that creates backups of sqlite book in the same manner
(and deletes the .log files).

Cheers
