Hi Tim,
For purchases, what I do is import a few weeks at a time from the bank
using a qif file. I don't use the business features as they are
incredibly clunky if you just want to enter a Mars bar or series of
small items. That gives the correct date etc and lets me split the
transaction automatically to add gst before the import.

[GNC] File, Import transactions, Match Transactions form Select account

2018-06-11 Thread Robert Mari
When selecting accounts from:
File-> Import -> Match Transactions form -> Select account
I find it tedious to always have to click on the arrow to expand the sub
accounts. It would be really nice if the Account Selection form from an
account transaction could be used instead. Unless there is a faster
keystroke method.

for instance when in an account if I type exp: it takes me to expenses, then
rep: takes me to expenses:repairs: then h automatically takes me to
expenses:repairs:home

In the File Import Match Transactions form I have to double click, then I
can type exp to get to expenses but then I have to click with mouse on the
arrow (sometimes it takes a couple clicks) then click on rent to expand it
as well, then on home.

[GNC] Payroll - How to generate a Paystub

2018-06-11 Thread MichaelK
What do you send your employee(s) along with their paycheck? I have one
employee and pay him twice a month. Ordinarily, a paystub would accompany
the paycheck and list Salary and Withholdings for the pay period along with
Salary and Withholdings YTD.

I understand gnucash does not have an integrated payroll system, but once I
add the split for my employee in the Expense:Salary and Liability:Tax
accounts, I need to send a paystub with that information along with the
paycheck to the employee. There is no magic needed here, and seems like a
pretty basic principal since we have the notion of Employees.

I tried working with a modified Transaction Report, but that doesn't really
get me there.

Has anyone come up with a solution for this?

Thanks.

The employee related entries in GnuCash are not related to employee salaries in
any way. They
were added to manage expenses an employee makes on behalf of the company.

You may search for transactions in your Expense:Salary (say, based on date and
employee
name) and print an account report based on the search result ?

Re: [GNC] Payroll - How to generate a Paystub

2018-06-11 Thread Chad Neeper
As mentioned by Maf. King, I also use LibreOffice Calc. I use the
spreadsheet to assist with calculating employee withholdings as well as
employer contributions and to print out decent-looking paystubs for the pay
period. It would be nice if GnuCash had payroll built in, but for my own
one employee, a spreadsheet has been a cheap way to flesh out the missing
feature with a just reasonable amount of extra effort.

In what format did you save your gnucash data?

Assuming you built gnucash with dbi support enabled, you may be missing dbi
drivers for your data format.
If your file was not saved as xml, try installing package libdbd-sqlite3,
libdbd-mysql or libdbd-postgresql depending on how you saved your data.

Indeed, those files only store metadata. The actual file is where you chose to
save it back when you created it. This is just like in any other application.
The only thing gnucash does different is that it tries to reopen your last-
used file automatically when you close and reopen gnucash.

Re: [GNC] Payroll - How to generate a Paystub

2018-06-11 Thread R. Victor Klassen
I use three part cheques with the the cheque on the top of the page and two
stubs below. One to keep, one to go (attached to the cheque) to the employee.

This did require some setup to get enough lines to print without overprinting
the cheque itself.

With the right cheque format (which may need to be custom), you can get all the
contents of the lines in the split to appear on the stub.

At that point, it’s a matter of making the gross amount and each of the
deductions an individual line in the splits of the transaction. The
descriptions and amounts, but not the account names, appear on the stub. What
exactly the breakdown is of all those deductions (and possibly additions)
depends on your jurisdiction. Where you just have one employee, there’s no
point automating the process of filling in the split - although you might need
a spreadsheet or some other form of assistance to calculate the values to go in
the various fields.

I don’t include YTD as those are not required in my jurisdiction, and I don’t
know how I would put them in using split lines. I could perhaps hack them
into the description fields of the non YTD amounts.

Re: [GNC] File, Import transactions, Match Transactions form Select account

2018-06-11 Thread David Carlson
Robert,

It makes a difference which type of file you are importing and whether you
are using one of the 2.6.x releases or or a 3.x release and possibly which
operating system your computer has. Your comment makes a good point but it
may or may not have been addressed already.

Re: [GNC] Ubuntu 18.04

2018-06-11 Thread DaveC49
Hi Geert,

I think one of the reasons people are not finding the Build#Ubuntu
instructions and main build instructions in the wiki is that the main page
is identified as Build Instructions for Developers rather than a general
GnuCash Build Instructions page which gets listed in the top level directory
of the wiki. I noted this when i rewrote the Build#Ubuntu page recently and
have been meaning to attempt a reorganisation with a general Build
Instructions page with breakouts for the various OS andLinux distributions
and then perhaps link a page specifically for developers build instructions.
The move from make to CMake has meant that the developer's build
instructions are possibly more relevant as general build instructions. I
will try and get that done asap. Perhaps if we can link to that info in the
Wiki from the documentation and or Gnucash webpage it will make it easier
for people to access. That can be difficult as the wiki tends to be a bit
free form and specific pages may come and go but a link to the wiki main
page with a note that more information is available on builds in the wiki
might help.
