Will do. Yes, that would be simpler, but the sun is more likely to rise in
the western sky tomorrow morning. I will have to represent her here in the
hope of finding a solution and installing GnuCash successfully on her Mac.

Thanks, Jules

[GNC] Working with compound interest on varying amounts

2018-12-02 Thread Hal Vaughan
For the past few years, for my business that is mostly about renovating or
restoring houses and reselling them (not flipping - this work takes time), I’ve
used a Python library I wrote myself to handle accounting. It was basically
made up mostly of stuff I had, with a few new things added in.

I would like to switch over to GnuCash. Luckily, since I’m at a slow point and
between projects, I can do that without worrying about converting old data for
older LLCs and projects.

There’s one issue I’m not sure can be handled by GnuCash, so I’d like to find
out about it before trying to switch over.

I use a line of credit. Luckily the interest rate is basically constant.
(There’s a slight flux, but not much.) The problem is its compounded and, of
course, every time I withdraw money from the credit line or pay any back, the
principal amount changes. I’m hoping, at this point, people are saying, "Oh,
yeah, just do this…."

But just in case there’s a need for clarification, if I withdraw $50,000 to
purchase a house on January 1, then, on the 15th, withdraw $10,000 for roofing
work, need to figure out the total owed to that credit line on 1/31, and the
interest rate is 3%, then I have to figure compound interest on $50,000 at 3%
from 1/1 to 1/15. Then I have to add $10,000 to that amount to calculate the
interest on the $50,000 plus 15 days of interest, plus $10,000, plus the
interest from the 15th to the 30th, at 3%, to get a clear number for what I owe.

Can I have this done automatically on an account? If not, how can I easily
keep track of this in GnuCash?

Thank you!

[GNC] Learning relate Gnucash to bank in 3-letter anagram world

2018-12-02 Thread Jonathan Ames
Hi --

Obviously I'm new to Gnucash, though I've had it four years and decided
after a few attempts that I had insufficient IQ, and was perhaps myself an
evolutionary side-track.

So on this last attempt I got accounts established; however, when time to
attach to bank, or even copy and download transactions, it's alphabet city.
So I don't lose my mind, someone please confirm that in 'open source' there
is no automation of such transaction, as there is in Quicken, YNAB, etc.. I
could download a QXF (or whatever) file to desktop, but could not bring it
into Gnucash. The "import" tab doesn't seem operative, though I got the QFX
from desktop into an odd file called "Imbalance" (unexplained). I then
attempted to transfer the file to my home checking; would not do. The
specific bank account behaves as if it were a placeholder, though it is a
named account under "Bank Accounts". Of course, the bank uses its own
categories; I would expect to categorize them as per "Common Accounts" list.

I see on the web that others have struggled with this basic, essential
function of any accounting program (such as Quickbooks, which I use and
want to discontinue).

I am running Sierra on an 8gb ram/512 gb storage. The help sources seem to
have skipped over this function -- working with bank accounts. Sure it's
there somewhere, though the three-step suggestion doesn't work.

So: is automatic connection to bank accounts possible? If not, how do you
"aim" downloaded QFX transaction files? Also, are Gnucash users mostly also
developers, with at least some college CS (who therefore don't need to pay
for commercial finance-tracking programs)?

Thanks, anyone.

Actually I’m a MacHead. =)The GnuCash installation is not clear and
different programs install differently. It doesn’t do the usual “Drag this to
Applications” kind of instruction. Some open source programs use a variety of
installation procedures. Just glad I figured it out.

Re: [GNC] How to save Gnucash and Lock file issues

2018-12-02 Thread David Cousens
Lorrie,

At some point instead of opening the main file "finances.gnucash" it would
appear you have opened a backup copy of the
file, which is why it has the form "finances.gnucash.20181202.gnucash".

Each time Gnucash is opened, it copies the file ".gnucash it" has
just opened and renames it
".gnucash..gnucash" . It also creates a logfile
".gnucash..log"
which records the changes to the file which occur during the current session.

When you exit or when you make changes or use the Save button in GnuCash any
changes are saved to ".gnucash"
In your case ="finances.gnucash.20181202" instead of
"finances.gnucash".

You can restore this to the normal situation simply by renaming the file you
are currently using as the main
file, "finances.gnucash.20181202.gnucash", as "finances.gnucash".

See https://www.gnucash.org/docs/v3/C/gnucash-guide/basics-backup1.html for a
detailed explanation of this.

Re: [GNC] Installation on a Mac

2018-12-02 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
Dave,
I'm pretty sure Gerry was not talking about configuration files. His references
to folders in Applications suggests that. The terminology he uses suggests he
is more familiar with Windows or Linux than the Mac, since (as John notes
elsewhere) the only installation one needs to do for Gnucash on the Mac is drag
the executable into Applications.
FWIW, Gerry, you can install different versions of gnucash on a mac simply by
changing the name of the app in the Applications folder. I have 2.6.21 and 3.3
side by side on my machine. Increasingly, I open 3.3, but I keep 2.6.21 because
the look is more to my taste.

Hi Colin,

I understand. Since I don't really need to know the minute and seconds when

My next topic, for another email, is how to set up a budget. I have tried
and watched videos and read documentation but never quite get it to work or
understand what it is doing.

Thanks for your help this morning.

If you are using Windows 10 the latest update improved Windows Defender.
Look at your messages (bottom right corner of screen and check to see if
defender has blocked it, if so click on the message and it will take you to the
defender window where you can enter gnucash. exe as a trusted app, but you must
do it by starting at C: and work your way through to gnucash.exe and click on
open and gnucash.exe will be added to trusted apps. Hope this helps it worked

There’s no “installation process” beyond dragging GnuCash from the dmg to
somewhere on disk. The first time you launch a program, MacOS runs some checks
on it before starting it. Several users have reported that that process fails
to start GnuCash after completing its checks and that if one simply
double-clicks the GnuCash icon again it starts normally.

However, there are also a couple of Gtk bugs affecting GnuCash-3.3. What
version of MacOS is she running, and if it’s 10.14 “Mojave” is she using Dark
Mode?

Keep importing. It takes several runs of the importer to build up enough
matching data to generate matches, and it’s runs of the matcher that matter,
not the number of transactions in an import.

You’re missing the part where you need to drag GnuCash out of the dmg to a
normal directory. You can have both 2.6.21 and 3.3 if you keep them in
different directories or rename one of them.

The launch failure after Gatekeeper is well known, just start GnuCash again and
it should work normally.

2.6 will continue to work in Mojave, but Apple says that 32-bit programs won’t
work in MacOS 10.15. That’s not an insurmountable problem: I can make a 64-bit
build of 2.6.21 next summer if there’s sufficient demand.

On a Mac, the Gnucash support files are either in the app bundle itself, or in
~/Library/Application Support/Gnucash, so it takes a little work to move them

Re: [GNC] Installation on a Mac

2018-12-02 Thread Jules Levinson
Thanks to everyone who is trying to help us install GnuCash. Never having
used a Mac, and also never having had any trouble with GnuCash on Windows
(I am no fan of Windows, but GnuCash does run on my machines without
difficulty), I am surprised to learn that others have experienced
such issues and completely at a loss for solutions. At least I now know,
and can report to my wife, that she's not alone. We will persist until we
resolve this successfully.

[GNC] How to automate $ value on the contra account when editing a transaction

2018-12-02 Thread David wasserman
I have the habit of duplicating previous transactions rather than entering
the whole thing afresh.

It occurs to me that in a simple Debit and Credit entry that it may be
possible to have the contra entry mimic the first amount, either entered or
edited.

Not a big problem but a niggle that I have.

[GNC] Import qif does not remember account allocation.

2018-12-02 Thread David wasserman
Running Ubuntu 18.04. GNC version 2.6.19.

Whereas GNC remembers previous account allocation on my Mastercard.
Importing from my recently new AMEX credit card, the system doesn't
remember the account allocation even for exactly the same transaction
multiple times previously booked.

How to fix, please?

Re: [GNC] Installation on a Mac

2018-12-02 Thread Gerry Starnes
I had the same problem with 3.3. I had to add a couple of steps though.

1) renamed the old folder in Applications to GnuCash 2.2
2) created a new folder for GnuCash 3.3 in the Applications folder.
3) copied all of the files in the window that opened when I double clicked
the installer volume to the new GnuCash 3.3 folder
4) clicked on GnuCash in the new folder

This opened GnuCash correctly and it also found my previous data files.
Seems to me that something about the installation does not actually put the
executable and support files in the Applications folder.

If the gnucash is in the Applications folder (usual place to install apps on a
mac), and that is where it gets launched the first time when the system asks
you if you want to run an app downloaded from the internet, when you say “Yes,
run it”, the Mac fails to open the app. If you go back to the Applications
folder and double click Gnucash again, it will open Gnucash as expected
(without asking again if you’re sure). That’s what has been happening for me
for many version releases, maybe even before the 3.x versions. After that first
aborted launch for a new download, I have not had any launch failures.

So, plan to have to open Gnucash twice on a Mac the first time you try running
a newly downloaded copy.

Keep in mind, though, that double clicking on any gnucash data file on a mac
usually results in gnucash opening with the last data file it used, even if
that wasn’t the file you double-clicked in Finder. Use File>Open from within
Gnucash. Just launch Gnucash directly if you want to use the last file it had
open.

Re: [GNC] Can no longer print checks

2018-12-02 Thread Ronal B Morse
Thank you. I don't have a solution, but I can tell you I have experienced the
same problem with Windows, except in my case the application was "NannyPay2",
which is a front end for FileMakerPro. In that case the print dialog would not
accept any input into the page range settings and that led to no output.

All other applications could print normally. Other NannyPay2/FilemakerPro
users did not report the issue.

I have a HP CP2025DN printer. There were two work-arounds: either print
documents to .pdf format (print to file) then print the resulting .pdf file
from another application, or change the printer driver from the preferred HP
Postscript for Color LaserJet driver to a PCL3 printer control language
driver.

Curiously, a third driver using the PCL6 printer control language (also
compatible with my hardware) produced the same symptoms as the Postscript
driver.

I hope someone can find a solution for you.

[GNC] Installing 3.3 on Mac OS Mojave

2018-12-02 Thread Gerry Starnes
I am trying to install the 3.3-1 version on my upgraded OS (Mojave
10.14.1). I've downloaded and run the dmg from Sourceforge. It shows me the
directory program and support files in a separate window. When I double
click on the program, it verifies then asks if I want to run the program
downloaded from the Web. I respond to continue and the program icon in the
dock disappears.

>From the Mojave upgrade, I know that the 2.6.18 version will not work in
future updates because it is not 64 bit. So, I'm concerned that the upgrade
is not loadable.

What might I be missing?

Thanks...

Re: [GNC] How to save Gnucash and Lock file issues

2018-12-02 Thread Lorrie Laskey
Hi Colin,

I understand. Since I don't really need to know the minute and seconds when
a file is saved at this time, I will leave the file name as it is.

My next topic, for another email, is how to set up a budget. I have tried
and watched videos and read documentation but never quite get it to work or
understand what it is doing.

Thanks for your help this morning.

Stephanie,

What help do you need?  Just setting some configuration parameters?
Installing?  Developing a Chart of Accounts?

I'm a little north of you (NE of Battle Ground, WA) and occasionally
make forays into Portland.  My technical expertise (for that past couple
decades) involves installing and running Oracle Enterprise Database on
Linux boxes.  My Windows is weak (my wife's computer is a Windows box --
mine is Ubuntu).

As for GnuCash, I've used it for personal tracking and have not done the
more business oriented portions (A/P, A/R, online banking).  Instead I
pull down QFX type transaction files and import those.

If you want to pursue this, let's go off list and work up a list of what
you need accomplished.  My email and phone are below.

If you used Save As to save to that file, then that file becomes the
current file in use so when you later use Save it will save back to
that file again (and that is the file that will be re-opened
automatically when you open Gnucash). Again this is exactly the same
as will happen with MS Word for example. Save As means "save the file
with this new name and then keep using the new name". If you want to
give it a different name then use Save As just once to save it with
the name you want and thereafter Save will save back to that file.

Hi Colin,

The "save" option did get focus once I made a change and saved the file.

However, the file name doesn't look right. See below. It is using the name
that I created when I used "save as" though I used "save" but the log file
name looks right. What is happening? Is this a problem?

Drag the contents of the .dmg file to your Applications folder. Right
(option/alt) click on the GnuCash icon and select 'Open'from the menu.
Agree that you do want to open the app. You only need to follow this on
the first occasion, macOS will mark the application so it will open
normally thereafter.

Re: [GNC] Installation on a Mac

2018-12-02 Thread Richard Jones
Jules
The answer is that you have to drag the dmg file ( system image file) to
the applications folder. That is what installs it as an app.
see
https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/64845/how-do-i-install-applications-from-a-dmg-file
I am currently engaged in a very similar process - except that I am
migrating from PC to Mac.
I have had a lot of good help from other users on the forum, but this thing
about dragging the file was a little extra thing that I found out after
experiencing the same problem as your wife.
I should add that I found other problems, which you may or may not
experience - they may have been because of some mistake I made or because
migrating a PC file causes a problem which you would not get if starting
from scratch.
But I found mac gnucash 3.3 kept crashing.
I deleted everything and installed 2.6.21 this afternoon. It appears stable
and has now run for a few hours.
I should stress that I am not an expert on this at all but I hope this
helps.

They are also different modules in a business financial package.

(1) GL ones are regular everyday money movements
(2) AP/AR transactions are business amounts owed/payable and are

(3) FA transactions are multiyear entities whereby a single
asset/liability is amortized over time, and are currently handled very
much manually. This could be refined as a separate transaction type.
(4) PAYROLL transactions are, IMHO, simple multisplit transactions
whereby the allocations must follow predefined (and customizable) formulas
(5) POS transactions are simply an input mechanism into the GL, right?
Unless you're talking about POS transactions also handle decreasing
inventory items and calculating their pricing... this seems out of
scope for gnucash which aims to be for personal/sole trader bookkeeping.

I wouldn't know how to handle INVENTORY/PURCHASING ones.

You've forgotten commodities/stock:
(6) STOCK transactions are simple regular money movements with
variably priced commodities, and, IMO, currently gnucash handles them
similarly to currencies and it works fairly well... except the
FIFO/LIFO asset pricing is rather hard to do.

I'd add another candidate to the list.

(7) BUDGET transactions are virtual transactions - they do NOT move
money around in the book, yet, the budget balances may be counted
separately and are used to compare GL transactions with the budget ones.

Would you care to add your high-level overview to the wiki?

I was both excited and dismayed to learn that GnuCash has "Fixed
Assets".  Excited because that meant an expansion of capability and
dismayed because reading between the lines implied only the
setting up

Adding a set of Fixed Asset accounts to the General Ledger system
does
not make the General Ledger into a Fixed Assets module any more than
adding a set of Payroll accounts make the G/L into a payroll system.

Accounting Modules (at a high level):

1.  General Ledger (G/L).  The module that allows a user to
maintain a
set of accounting books electronically using generally accepted
accounting practices.  This module is also the recipient of JVs
(Journal
Vouchers) from other financial systems.  Primary purpose is to
produce a
Balance Sheet (under various names) and an Income Statement (also
having
aliases).  It maintains information at a summary level

2.  Accounts Payable (A/P).  This module tracks to whom, how much,
and
when payments are due.  It should sent a multi-line JV to the
G/L.  This
module must track names and addresses and other information that a
G/L
does not need (and shouldn't have to worry about).

3.  Accounts Receivable (A/R).  This module tracks from whom, how
much,
and when payments should be received.  It also should sent a
multi-line
JV to the G/L.  It also tracks names, addresses, and other
information
that a G/L should ignore.

4.  Fixed Assets (F/A).  This module tracks the assets of the company
that have a relative long life. (Not inventory that has a short shelf
life).  It also knows about depreciation schedules and the past,
present, and potential future value of each asset including the
depreciation amount, etc.  It also sends a multi-line JV to G/L.  And
again, G/L should ignore a lot of the details involved in Fixed
Assets.

5.  Payroll (P/R).  This tracks employees, how much they are paid,
what
deductions to take out of their pay, how often they are paid along
with
the accrual of certain benefits (sick leave, vacation bank, etc).  It
also prepares certain tax related reports for various governing
bodies.
This is one of, if not the, most complicated financial module.  It
also
sends a multi-line JV to G/L.  Generally it prints its own set of
checks
but I've heard of cases where it sends that information over to A/P
(overloads A/P in my opinion).

Then there follow other financial modules that may be beneficial
to some
entities:

6.  Inventory.  This tracks certain transitory assets and has
reorder-points, vendors (from whom to order), clients (who can buy
and
purchase levels).  It also talks to G/L and other systems (A/P, A/R).

7.  Purchasing.  May be part of inventory or some systems make
inventory
part of purchasing.  Ideally they talk to each other and this handles
the issuing of the PO (purchase order) to ensure inventory levels are
maintained.  It may interface with F/A when the company needs to
purchase additional (or replacement) items for long-term
retention.  It
also needs to handle items that are directly expensed and not

I ran the fix - modified for windows 10 64 and Microsoft Edge/IE11.
Never
had the problem with the reports not showing just not printing. It did
not
work.

When I bring up a report or check to print, I clink on "print". This
opens the print window box. It shows my printer as "ready". In the Page
Range section the Pages area is blank. This indicates there are no pages
to
print - I think. If I then go ahead and click on print then the print
icon
shows up in the bottom tray. But it indicates there are no documents in
the
cue. It then goes away after a couple of minutes.

It will be greyed out until you change something. Once you change
something then it should be enabled. If not then that probably means
you did a Save As and selected sqlite as the file type. If that is
the case then do Save As, select XML, browse to the folder where you
want the file and click the OK, or Save button or whatever it is.
Then close and re-open gnucash, it should re-open the xml file (you
can see the file name in the top bar) and then the Save button should
be back to normal.

Save is the right way to do it. That will save back into whichever

If you get the Lock file warning when you open GC that means that GC
probably did not close down properly the last time you used it.
Either GC or Windows crashed for example, or you did a forced
powerdown of the PC rather than a normal shutdown. It is only a
warning, you can just say Open Anyway, provided you have not already
got the file open in another GnuCash instance or on another computer.

[GNC] How to save Gnucash and Lock file issues

2018-12-02 Thread Lorrie Laskey
Hi all,

This message is for two topics. If you respond, please either select one
topic or divide the message by topic to make it easier for me to follow the
messages.

#1 Saving
I don't understand how to save Gnucash or properly close it, it seems. I
have used Gnucash for years and used the "save" option.

In the past, I selected "save" but recently ran into "lock file" issue.
Next I tried "save as" but then a pop up window appeared asking me to save
it as an xml file. I did figure out that I needed to name the file and
Gnucash would add the .xml extension. Is this the correct method? What are
the different file types for? I really did read the documentation but the
save option explanations are too far above my head. Can someone explain
what the save options are at an intro level?

#2
Recent "lock file" issues forced me to troubleshoot and find other methods
to open and save. Note that I am the only person using Gnucash, on one
computer. So I don't understand how this file is being generated.

There is a very old bug report about not being able to print in Windows
which has never been resolved because it cannot be repeated. I don't
remember the bug number. Someone found a work-around that seems to make
the problem go away until a re-install of something, either Windows or

Thanks so much for your help. It was a currency issue, I must have installed
the OS in a location other then the normal and the system pulled in a different
currency. Anyhow when I created the new invoice it was in an odd currency.

That would have taken me ages to find. Thanks again!

There is no problem printing from other programs. Because of my work I
print from 10 or 15 different programs to printers and pdf. I have tried
to print checks and reports to pdf and it will print. However, the
result is a blank page. HB

Have you tried things like printing to PDF or printing from a
different program?

This opens the print window box. It shows my printer as "ready".
In the Page Range section the Pages area is blank. This indicates
there are no pages to print - I think. If I then go ahead and
click on print then the print icon shows up in the bottom tray.
But it indicates there are no documents in the cue. It then goes

This is the modified fix that I ran:

- click on Control Panel via Cortana search

 - Click on Internet Options

 - Select the Programs Tab

 - At the bottom of the tab, select Set Programs

 - Select the bottom option "set program access and computer defaults"

 - You are then asked to choose default apps:

 - I used the Reset to the Microsoft recommended defaults -- It did not
work for me

Re: [GNC] Can no longer print checks

2018-12-02 Thread HB Sidman via gnucash-user
I ran the fix - modified for windows 10 64 and Microsoft Edge/IE11.
Never had the problem with the reports not showing just not printing. It
did not work.

When I bring up a report or check to print, I clink on "print". This
opens the print window box. It shows my printer as "ready". In the Page
Range section the Pages area is blank. This indicates there are no pages
to print - I think. If I then go ahead and click on print then the print
icon shows up in the bottom tray. But it indicates there are no
documents in the cue. It then goes away after a couple of minutes.

Thanks,

HB

There is a very old bug report about not being able to print
in Windows which has never been resolved because it cannot be
repeated.  I don't remember the bug number.  Someone found a
work-around that seems to make the problem go away until a
re-install of something, either Windows or GnuCash.  That
work-around may work for you.

HB,

Windows always calls *.chk files 'Recovered File
Fragments'

If the files are in the 'C:\Program Files
(x86)\gnucash\share\gnucash\checks' directory they
are not fragments but the files that you want, at
least for 2.6.x releases of GnuCash in Windows.  You
can open them (carefully) with Wordpad and see what
they contain.  If you made custom check printing
formats they may be somewhere else, I have not tried
that.

Hi

OK, that's clear enough - even for me! Many thanks.

I'll try making the mod tomorrow (taking all the precautions I can think
of) and try to download prices in the evening (when a new lot become
available).

Best wishes

Reposting every 4 hours isn’t going to improve your chances, and you’ll have
better luck on the gnucash-de list where there are more FinTX users than here.
