Re: [GNC] Bills in Gnucash

2019-04-01 Thread Adrien Monteleone
I just played with toggling that preference back and forth and as I do so, the
’New Invoice’ button appears and disappears accordingly. It seems this is the
only button affected unless there is a special toolbar somewhere I’m not
triggering. (when viewing a bill/invoice there are 2 ’New Invoice’ buttons, one
is the generic version, the other is tied to the same ‘current owner’ of the
viewed bill/invoice - that one doesn’t toggle.)

The Business menu remains visible in all cases.

Certainly, if one needs to manually manage A/R or A/P or not even use them,
those features would be nice to hide. I don’t think there is any danger posed
however by their visibility or existence unless one tries to both use those
features *and* manually make transactions in those special accounts.

Adrien

Back in 2014 I used to think that going to Edit > Preferences > Business
and checking Enable Extra Buttons was about enabling business features, but
I was told then that it is only about adding some un-named buttons on some
menus that were never documented. I agree that there should be a feature
to turn off business features for those of us that don't use them, because
sometimes they cause grief if accidentally or ignorantly activated.

Re: [GNC] Importing AR invoices

2019-04-01 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Teresa,

I forgot to mention, GnuCash has no facility to store ‘products’ or ’service
offerings’ or any kind of ‘inventory’. You just create your own invoice line
items each time. But the software does utilize auto-fill based on previous
entries. So you can start typing a line item description and it will fill in
the rest based on a previous entry as well as other line item info like income
account, discounts, quantity, pricing, tax etc.

If the invoices are exact (or even near) duplicates, you can use the Duplicate
Invoice button as a starting point and edit accordingly.

Adrien

Re: [GNC] Importing AR invoices

2019-04-01 Thread David Cousens
Teresa

In addition to the documentation if you open the import invoice dialog you
will see the column headers displayed in the dialog window. These basically
correspond to the data which constitutes the invoice record ( and associated
transaction). These can be matched up to the columns and associated headers
of the invoices you are importing. Not all fields need to be filled.Things
like the billing id and owner_id refer to internal guid's in the GnuCash
data structures.

Thanks David,

I was looking for that the other day and somehow glanced over it. Indeed, it is
still there in 3.4. (about to install 3.5 shortly) I suppose, then, since
preferences are user rather than book based that’s why the buttons were already
there. I didn’t try to start GC from a fresh user perspective. I’d have to try
an old copy of 2.6, but I seem to recall this being labeled as ‘enable business
features’ (which also added the special accounts and added the Business menu)
not just ‘enable extra buttons’, but my memory could be faulty.

Teresa,

Welcome to GnuCash!

Read over the Tutorial & Concepts Guide, Chapter 18:Importing Business Data.

If your Help menu doesn’t link to it (it should) you can find it on GnuCash.org
under Documentation.

The column headers and explanation for each of invoices/bills and
customers/vendors is included.

There are multiple reasons for that pop-up and a solution for each. One
involves disabling automatic login to the desktop. (if you use it) You can also
create a different ‘default’ keyring and set it to non-protected. (so it is
visible to anyone—not wise unless you store nothing in it.) Some apps also let
you tell them to ignore the keyring check entirely. (Chrome is one such app,
not sure about MySQL)

Or just use e-mail instead of Nabble? (or I’m sure something like uBlock Origin
could zap those windows before they come into existence)

I just opened a new file, chose the default ‘common accounts’ which did not
include A/R and A/P and sure enough, the “Business” menu is visible as was the
“New Invoice” button. (I didn’t go through the trouble of creating an invoice
or bill and seeing what would happen)

This was not always the case, certainly not at some point in the 2.6 series. I
distinctly remember having to ‘enable business features’ to both get the
Business menu as well as making the New Invoice button visible. I think doing
so also created the special A/R and A/P accounts in my tree.

Perhaps the business features which were originally an add-on module were
finally integrated into the main program at some point.

Adrien

Re: [GNC] Accounts Receivable

2019-04-01 Thread David Cousens
Teresa

GnuCash is explicitly double entry accounting.

When you create an invoice and Post it, it simultaneously creates a debit
entry to the A/R account and a credit entry to a specified income
account. When you create an invoice with The Business->Customer->New Invoice
dialog, the New Invoice window allows you to enter the information required
for the invoice and when you press next the invoice opens as a tab in the
main window. As the debit entry to A/R is mandatory for an invoice, you do
not have to explicity enter it. You will see a column, Income Account and
on the open line a down arrow which allows you to select, the income account
the credit entry will be made to. If you then enter the amounts in the
remaining columns and post the invoice another dialog comes up which asks
you for the Post To Account, again with a drop down list. If Assets:Accounts
Receivable does not appear in the box by default, then you possibly haven't
created the accounts necessary for the business features to work. You will
have to cancel the Post dialog.

Then select the Accounts tab in the main window, then select Actions->New
Account Heirarchy from the Actions menu item. Click Next then select the
currency to be used (your default book currency) and Next to get to the
Choose accounts to create entry. If you hit the Clear All button and then
check the box against the Business Accounts then hit Next it will add the
business accounts required to your Account tree.

If you then go back to the Invoice tab and Post it again, you should get
Assets:Accounts Receivable appearing as the default account to post the
invoice to. When you hit the OK button, it will create the debit and credit
entries in the A/R account and the selected income account.

Note the business features can also include sales tax/GST . You have to set
up the appropriate tax tables for this to be usable. See the Help Manual

[GNC] v3.5 Save Times

2019-04-01 Thread Fross, Michael
Hello devs,

Just wanted to say a big thank you for v3.5 I can't believe how fast my
XML file saves with the new version. It was never that bad (~12 seconds on
my SSD) but now it saves in just a few.

Congrats on the release and all of the bug fixes and enhancements.

[GNC] GNUcash crashes using sales tax

2019-04-01 Thread Martijn Heuts
Hello,
I am using GNUcash version 3.4.When I create a new invoice and enter 3 line
items, on the 3rd line item if I select the tax % in the 'tax table'
column,GNUcash will freeze for a little while and eventually crash on me. It
does not happen for 1 or 2 line items.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for all the answers on my previous questions. You all are great!!

[GNC] Importing AR invoices

We are just getting started in GNUCash, we are using another system for
invoicing.

I have tried several times to import invoices from Jan 1, each time has
failed.

Please provide the column layout, we invoice up to 75 recurring invoices
monthly, that include one of 5 IT products that are loaded in GNUCash.

I really need this to work.

Re: [GNC] Parent Directories not Reflecting Sub-Directory Totals

Thank you for the reply. I set up the currency to the default USD when
configuring the parent and sub-accounts. Opening the PriceDB shows that my

CUR is "currency".  For example, "Total (USD)".  The default total column
only shows in the account commodity (which may be a currency, or may be a
stock or other fund).  In this case, different commodities are not rolled
up, because you cannot add Apples and Oranges together.  The "Total (CUR)"
means convert all values to the currency CUR and display that.

I'll note, however, that the roll up should occur anyways, but it does
require that you have an entry in the PriceDB back to your default
currency.  Do you have that entry?

[GNC] Parent Directories not Reflecting Sub-Directory Totals

2019-04-01 Thread Dennis Marshall
I am having difficulties with some Parent directories not reflecting totals
from sub-directories. For example, I have an investment account set up.
Sub-directories accurately reflect data entries, but this does not show up in
the parent directory totals. In addition, I have one account in a sub directory
of 4 items that is not reflected in the total amount of the parent directory.
What am I missing and how do I go about fixing this? Thanks.

[GNC] Unable to install Financial Quotes

2019-04-01 Thread Ward & Kathy Burns
I have installed v 3.5 and am trying to install the financial quotes. I
have Strawberry Perl installed. I am using Windows 10 and try to run the
"Install Online Price Retrieval for GnuCash" under GnuCash in the Start
Menu.  That just gives me an windows cmd prompt with an error that says
"Did not find ssleay32.dll in current directory. Please start this cmd
file in the bin directory created by the setup.exe."

The shortcut is set to run in "C:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\bin"
Looking in that directory there is no ssleay32.dll in the gnucash\bin
directory or any other gnucash directory.

Hope someone can help.
