Re: [GNC] Gnucash doesn't load American Express QFX files

2019-09-07 Thread Jim Leek
OK, with comments from John Ralls and RBM, I think I see what's going on.
American Express is updating their website. As part of that, they've
upgraded to OFX version 2.0.2, which libofx does not support. Currently I
can still click a button "Return to Previous Version", from which I can
download my activity in OFX 1.0.2. So, that works for now.

AMEX let me take a survey, so I complained about it. But I imagine we need
to update libofx, or get a new one that handles XML, or something.

Re: [GNC] Newbie Q: match Description to Transfer

2019-09-07 Thread David Cousens
Liz, Bitmancer

There are modifications to the import matcher docs in progress which have
the double clicking to modify a transfer account incorporated in them. The
behavior is the same as in the register for changing the account for a
split.

AFAIK the behavior hasn't changed since the early v30-3.1. I recently setup
multiple selection to allow assignment of a single transfer account to
multiple transactions. The double click either opens the transfer account
selection dialogue if a transaction is flagged for import or the match
picker dialog if it has been matched to an existing transaction for a single
transaction selection to allow examination of that match. A right click will
bring up the transfer account selection if multiple transactions are
selected. A single left click selects the transaction but doesn't perform
any specific action. Ctrl-Left click and Shift Left click can be used to
select multiple transactions as describedin the GTK treeview documentation
until the description makes into into the docs

I'm currently reworking a lot of the docs around importing. Slowly because I
have to experiment and explore a lot to make sure I have everything covered.
The changes won't make it into v3.7 and are probably currently being
targeted at v4.0.

Double clicking is not a means I have ever used to alter the expense
account in an import. If it does also work then it would be important
to add it to the docs.

Just to fill in some details can you let us know your OS and version of
Gnucash?

Re: [GNC] Newbie Q: some transactions imported to wrong category

2019-09-07 Thread David Cousens

In the screen shot both of the lines of the transaction (splits in Gnucash
parlance) have accounts which are expense accounts. GnuCash is a double
entry system so when you make a payment for a purchase money is taken out of
your checking or savings account and given to the bank and this appears as
an expense. Other programs like Quicken often hide this from you but in
GnuCash it is explicit so any transaction records that money comes out of
your checking account and is spent on a specific expense.

i.e.DebitCredit

Asset:Checking Account $ 100
Expense:Car $100

is what you would expect to see for a purchase transaction

That transaction in the screen shot is repayment of a loan. When a loan is
first created you receive money from your bank into your checking account
for example and you create a liability that records the fact that you have
an obligation to repay the bank. This for example for a $10,000 loan will
have splits as follows:

   Debit Credit
Asset:CheckingAccount $10,000.00
Liability:Loan $10,000.00

When you make a payment of $400 on that loan, you reduce that liability (
ignore interest for the moment)
Debit Credit
Asset:Checking Account $400
Liability:Loan $400

and your transaction should have had that general form. ( I'm leaving out
dates, description and the reconcile status and just concentrating on the
accounts and money coming in and out).

The use of debits and credits is not what you will see on your bank
statement which is the banks' recording of its financial position, not
yours. You will find an explantion of the basics of double entry accounting
and how debits and credits apply in accounting and GnuCash in the GnuCash
Tutorial and Concepts Guide (
https://www.gnucash.org/docs/v3/C/gnucash-guide/index.html) in the section
called Basics and in subsequent sections how to handle loans credit cards
etc in the section about Managing Personal Finances. Some time invested in
reading this will be well worthwhile.

The Help manual (https://www.gnucash.org/docs/v3/C/gnucash-help/help.html)
is also useful for more button by button description of the GUi interface
(or it was intended to be but in some parts the lines get a bit blurred
between it and the guide).

The split finds the account just fine. A column called Rebate is presented
and the "R" column has a "c" in it. There seems to be no actual transfer
action to move it away from Error category to Correct category, even though
I have selected it from the drop-down list.

Bitmancer,

If you open the regster for the account to which you imported the
transactions. If you set the preferences using Edit->Preferences->Register
defaults and set the Auto-split register radio button when you click on a
transaction line, it will open to display both splits of the transaction on
separate lines. If you click on the account you wish to change adown arrow
appears on the right handside and clicking on that will open an account tree
display in which you can select the desired destination account. GnuCash
does not have categories but expense and income accounts serve the same
purpose and you can create groups of expense accounts.

For future reference when you are importing transactions GnuCash has a
matcher which will try to assign that account on the basis of past account
assignments. That information is stored when you click OK in the matcher to
complete the import so if you have not assigned the correct accounts in the
matcher process before importing them, that information will not be stored.
Hence future imports will continue to be assigned to the wrong accounts on
import. The matcher uses a statistical process to match the accounts and it
can be "trained" by importing more data correctly. Assigning the correct
account from the register rather than in the import matcher will not train
the matcher to correctly assign the transfer accounts.

Under Edit->Preferences->Online Banking you will find a setting "use
bayesian matching". which should be set. I think it is the default. Other
wise it uses a simpler and less adaptive method to assign the account.

Hi Bitmancer,

If you're using GnuCash V3.x, you can also use Tools, Import Map Editor
to delete entries that are causing mapping to wrong account name.

Re: [GNC] Gnucash doesn't load American Express QFX files

2019-09-07 Thread Ronal B Morse

Maybe what I do is a little different.

After logging in to Amex and navigating to the Statements and Activity
Page, I click on the green download icon from the pages toolbar and
select card activity from that drop down.

A new paged opens automatically and on that page I select "Quicken" from
the options in the left pane then scroll down the page to find the date
range selection section in the right pane. Today I clicked on the
"Individual statements available to download" radio button then selected
checked "Aug 15 to Present" since I downloaded about a week ago.

Clicking on the blue "download" button results in a file named ofx.qfx
in my downloads folder and that is the file I inport into Gnucash.

Hope this helps

With GnuCash 3.6 I was able to import from CSV.  That's a hassle, but
the import page is much better than was on Gnucash 2.6, so kudos to

Re: [GNC] Newbie Q: some transactions imported to wrong category

2019-09-07 Thread David Cousens
Bitmancer,

If you open the regster for the account to which you imported the
transactions. If you set the preferences
using Edit->Preferences->Register defaults and set the Auto-split register
radio button when you click on a transaction line, it will open to display
both splits of the transaction on separate lines. If you click on the
account you wish to change adown arrow appears on the right handside and
clicking on that will open an account tree display in which you can select
the desired destination account. GnuCash does not have categories but
expense and income accounts serve the same purpose and you can create groups
of expense accounts.

Re: [GNC] Gnucash doesn't load American Express QFX files

2019-09-07 Thread Jim Leek
I just tried to download from AmericanExpress again. I still have the same
problem. I'm just clicking the little download icon next to my activity on
the "Statements and Activity" page. Maybe there's another method?

With GnuCash 3.6 I was able to import from CSV. That's a hassle, but the
import page is much better than was on Gnucash 2.6, so kudos to whoever
made that.

[GNC] Newbie Q: some transactions imported to wrong category

2019-09-07 Thread Bitmancer
All of my Natural Gas utility payments got imported to my Cell Phone
category.

One of my Mortgage Payments got imported to Auto Insurance category.

How can I correct their categories in GnuCash?

Thanks for any help.
(I am semi-perl-literate, and can run perl scripts against xml extractions
if necessary.)

That did the trick. I split everything by month!

Then I learned that by DOUBLE CLICKING on an account, I could change it from
UNRECONCILED to the correct Expense.
Nowhere in the online docs that I read does it say to DOUBLE CLICK. I would
recommend that we alter the docs to fix this!

Works fine on a Mac, GnuCash 3.6, aqbanking 5.7.8: Just tested on both the
aforementioned credit card and on a bank account. Might be a Fedora problem:
The -2 and -3 on the aqbanking versions means that the Fedora Packager has
patched AQBanking.

Re: [GNC] USAA accounts no longer receive balance or transactions

2019-09-07 Thread D Ducky
Ok,

I just confirmed that it's something with gnucash or aqbanking:

On another machine, with duplicate books and configurations, with gnucash:

gnucash-3.4-1.fc29.x86_64

aqbanking-5.7.8-2.fc29.x86_64

it works fine, for balance and transactions

however on

gnucash-3.6-1.fc30.x86_64

aqbanking-5.7.8-3.fc30.x86_64

---

No balance, no transactions for USAA accounts.

Maybe a glitch at usaa.com? I had no trouble getting my credit card
 transactions from there on Tuesday.

Do note that you need to adjust the dates when you retry a download.
AQBanking defaults to starting at the time of the last download attempt,
 successful or not.

2019-09-07 Thread D Ducky
I just tried another USAA checking account, specified 7/7/2019 to 9/7/2019

and it says

"the online banking import returned no transactions for the time period."

Not sure what is going on.

Well, I don't see anything in the debug showing a problem.

What happens when you query balance?
