Ya - I guessed the SaveAs was the culprit. I don't need to - its just a
redundant move to save a 4th copy. I'll try your method.

Re: [GNC] Column Width Saving?

2020-10-21 Thread David H
Does the same on Win 10 - X'ing out of Gnucash or using File >> Quit saves
the prefs correctly.

Doing a save as to a different file name saves the prefs in C:\Users\<>\AppData\Roaming\GnuCash\books under the NEW FILE NAME - this
probably unsets the flag to say the prefs have changed so when you come
back and save the file again under the original file name it doesn't try to
save the prefs there as well. Have a look in your C:\Users\<>\AppData\Roaming\GnuCash\books folder - you'll probably have a
gnucash.gcm file there from your last save as backup file details ???

If I were you I would change my workflow and save under the real file name
and quit Gnucash which will save your prefs for the real file and then copy
the gnucash data file to your backup location and your problem should go
away :-) You should look at backing up your preferences and saved reports
as well so it makes more sense to have a separate backup strategy which
copies these files to your backup location - see wiki for what files to
back up at
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Q:_How_do_I_backup_my_GC_environment.2C_including_preferences.3F

There are programs out there to copy files to backup locations at the press
of a button or when they detect changes or on a schedule - I use FreeFile
Sync, but there's others like Rsync, Syncthing - so you might want to take
a look at those.

Cheers David H.

Re: [GNC] Column Width Saving?

2020-10-21 Thread David H
OK I just tried X'ing out of Gnucash and using Quit from the top menu on
MacOS - both times the timestamp on the prefs file was updated. Will try
on Win 10 shortly.

Do you want to try just opening your usual file from C: location changing
some column widths and then quitting Gnucash without all the Save As carry
on - maybe that's screwing something up? Then re-open Gnucash and see if
the column widths are saved in that circumstance ?

Regards David H.

Try using quit from the menu instead of killing the window with X.

Re: [GNC] Column Width Saving?

2020-10-21 Thread Jack Slater
I first do a Save As (to save a backup to an external drive). Then I do a
Save As to the original (desired C: drive) location. Then Click upper right
X to close the program.

When I reopen GC the same windows/accounts open right up.

Windows 10.

Re: [GNC] Column Width Saving?

2020-10-21 Thread David H
Jack,

I'm not seeing this issue on 4.2 on Win 10, Mac OS or Ubuntu 20.04...

What os are you running on, do you have write permissions on the
preferences file which I think from memory is .gnucash.gcm. If you go in and change column widths in Gnucash does
the file timestamp get updated when you QUIT Gnucash - not sure if it gets
updated when you just save the file - doesn't look like it seems like you
have to actually QUIT Gnucash to have these saved ?

See wiki for config file locations -
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Configuration_Locations.

Cheers David H.

Using 4.2 on Windows and macOS, both remember the column width settings.
Adjust column width, quit, re-open and column widths remain as I adjusted them.

Except for the Description column, which isn’t remembered.

I'm running 4.2.

Adjusted column widths - looked at the View Menu and Register & Register
Default options in Preferences - found nothing. I saved the file with the
adjustments in place and poof - modified widths gone when I reopened the
file. To be honest I could never get them to save in 3.x versions either.

Is there a comma in the pasted amount? You'll want to remove it.

[GNC] 4.2 on Windows 10 keeps randomly crashing

2020-10-21 Thread mike823
My new installation of 4.2 on Windows 10 keeps randomly crashing. Maybe 10
times in the last two weeks. Version 3 was extremely stable, have not seen a
crash in years.

Today it happen 5 times while I was trying to enter a new stock buying
transaction as following:
- duplicated an existing transaction
- edit quantity
- edit price <<< crash on
paste
- edit total drawn from cash balance <<< crash on keyboard edit

GC windows fading, spinning circular cursor and crash, no message what so
ever.

What is the standard procedure to troubleshoot something like this? TIA.

[GNC] Transfer saved-reports after upgrade

2020-10-21 Thread Alan Taylor
Hello All,

I have just installed GnuCash 4.2 on Linux Mint (20) via flatpak.

I would like to copy my saved-reports file from my previous version of
GnuCash (3.x) from a different computer.

I can’t see where flatpak has put this ?

Also the name is something like “saved-reports-2.8”, do I keep the same
name ?

BRgds/Alan
