The Intel builds work. I've been testing with a developer transition kit since
July. Running the current build works fine, but there are still a few
dependencies that don't. Until either those teams fix the problems or I write
patches for those I can figure out (there are a couple that use assembly
language that I won't be able to do anything with) there can't be a native
Apple Silicon build of GnuCash. That might take a while.

Looking at the picture of the menu shows that it has been customized.

Next best step would be to download the official full Windows package and
try to install it. That should create and populate that group properly. I
don't believe reinstalling it will harm in anyway as I have reinstalled
multiple times on my own desktop without any issues nor will it impact your
ability to retrieve prices as it will not touch that portion of installation
either.

Re: [GNC] Annoying Register Issue

2020-11-12 Thread David Cousens
I prefer to build my own as well. On Linux once the dependencies are
installed this is pretty easy.

While the flathub idea is good in principle it seems to require
configuration of the sandbox and maybe specifically for each app. John Ralls
has sorted out such issues before and you may possibly find some references
in the archive of the user and dev forums on how to set premissions for
flatpaks. The print issue is usually a permissions setting which allows the
sandbox the flatpak is run in access to the OS print facilities.

For my purposes the extra protection of a sandbox environment was not worth
the learning curve.

Florence,

There is no facility within GnuCash to print a screen AFAIK. It is probably
easiest to use a screenshot facility in your OS.

This article discusses methods for various OSes
https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/8/20953522/how-to-take-screenshot-mac-windows-pc-iphone-android.
These will usually be stored as a png file. You can then open them in an
image viewer and print them from there

Re: [GNC] Price retrieval

2020-11-12 Thread randix
Geert... just to put a cap on this thread (it has a good ending)...

1. The Dell XPS 13 that was involved is not a 2-1 version (which Dell does
offer), it has a standard Windows 10 Professional install with no optional
tablet version as far as I'm aware. I have no idea why the Start menu does
not reflect a "group" for GnuCash, only the exe file, etc.

2. I had previously tried to run "C:\Program Files
(x86)\gnucash\bin\install-fq-mods.cmd" but it stopped at
"c:/strawb~/\c\bin\gmake.exe -- ok." and it stopped there for such a "long
time" that I assumed it got stuck there for whatever reason. I did try
running it again this morning and it again stopped at that point, but this
time I just went and took the proverbial "walk around the block", and it
finally did resume and the install was successful.

/So I have no explanation why the option does not appear in the Start menu,
nor when you type it in the search window on the task bar, but running the
CMD file in the bin folder did work, I just wasn't being patient enough
(something I seem to recall I've been told once or twice in my life on other
endeavors)./

In any event, thanks for your response.

It is most likely to be a premissions issue with Flatpak. I'm not familiar
enough with that to make any suggestions. If the keyboard is acting normally
in other apps it is highly likely to be in that area. You can check what the
computer is getting from the keyboard using xev in a terminal. I think John

Re: [GNC] Annoying Register Issue

Thanks for the reply Tommy.

I have used the Flatpak version of GC since at least 4.0 on the same
system.  This is the first experience of the issue described.  I often
issue the flatpak update and nothing has updated since GC 4.2.

I am running this on a Lenova w541 and just checked the insert key, but
to no effect.  However, there is a "Windows" key and that did remove an
entry.  ???

For what its worth, I have two of these laptops, both running the same
version of Linux Mint and I just installed GC 4.2 via Flatpak on the 2nd
one and I don't have this problem problem.  Weird.

I wondered if somehow you had turned on "Insert Mode" on your keyboard

I know little about flatpak but maybe try opening a terminal and
issuing the command

Maybe if there's a flatpak configuration issue it will tell you.

Oh and just to be certain -- I assume you have used other GnuCash

and delete it using the delete key on your keyboard. You can use

Hi -- has this issue resolved for you? I am using GnuCash 4.2 via Flatpak
on a couple of different releases of Ubuntu (20.04 and 20.10) and neither
shows this behavior.

I wondered if somehow you had turned on "Insert Mode" on your keyboard
(pressing the Insert key) but at least on this keyboard it didn't cause the
behavior you described.

I know little about flatpak but maybe try opening a terminal and issuing
the command

flatpak update

Maybe if there's a flatpak configuration issue it will tell you.

Oh and just to be certain -- I assume you have used other GnuCash releases
and have not seen this behavior before. If you are a new GnuCash user and
do not have much experience deleting and editing transactions, you should
know you cannot select the entire transaction and delete it using the
delete key on your keyboard. You can use Transaction --> Delete Transaction
menu item to delete an entire transaction.

Re: [GNC] Price retrieval

2020-11-12 Thread Geert Janssens
Hi,

You seem to have a different Windows menu on your Windows 10 than I do.
Perhaps that's the tablet mode and I'm in desktop mode.

On my Windows menu there are both a GnuCash application and a GnuCash folder.
Inside the folder I do see the Online price retrieval installer.

Having said all that, the reference in the Windows menu is just a fancy link
to
C:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\bin\install-fq-mods.cmd

So you can just run that command directly instead.

Regards,

Geert

Re: [GNC] Price retrieval

2020-11-12 Thread randix
I sincerely appreciate your response, however, as reflected in the attached
piks:

1. I do NOT have a GnuCash group in the Start menu, only the exe file
appears, as reflected in the attached screenshot, so I can't access the
"Install Online Price Retrieval" from there;

2. If I do a search for "Install Online Price Retrieval for Gnucash" off the
search option on the taskbar, it only brings up hits on the web, nothing to
run on my own laptop, as reflected in the attached screenshot.

So color me confused. I'm running Windows 10 Professional, on a brand new
Dell XPS 13 laptop.

I should also mention that on my other laptop, also a Dell XPS 13, also
which is running Windows 10 Pro, which I also have Gnucash installed running
4.2 and which I've been using without a problem for the past couple of
years, the price module works fine... however, as in the case of the brand
new laptop described above, on this laptop GnuCash ALSO has NO folder in the
start menu, and if you do a search for the retrieval off the taskbar, it
also only brings up hits on the web. I have no recollection how I
successfully installed it on this laptop, but I must have done something
right, cause it runs perfectly.
