[GNC] Simple Update Question

2021-07-27 Thread sc

Hello.

I successfully transferred from Quicken to GnuCash years ago, with no
troubles.  I'm a home user, nothing complex.

Is there any reason I should upgrade from Version 3.8?  Are the changes
mostly for business folks or are there changes that a home user would enjoy?

Thank you both. I didn't know this could be done and it will be a great help,
now that I know how to set it up. Never would have realized that setting it up
as an automatic transaction was my issue.

Gyle,

I believe you cannot create a transaction with a variable automatically
created, i.e. do not check the second box in the editor screen. Then it will
ask for a value when you run the since last run assistant.

Yes, just put a variable (string) in the debit/credit formula. Eg,
"total". When the SX fires, it will ask you for the actual amount to put
in.

Enjoy.

Re: [GNC] Scheduled transaction with variable amount

2021-07-27 Thread Aleksandar Kocic
Thanks,

While there is a way to not enter the amount, it is not an automated
process, and, in a sense, it is not different from putting a random value
and changing it later. Also, if a transaction can't be created
automatically, it means it will be even more manual steps to get it done.

What I was looking for is a scheduler checking the account balance and
setting the value automatically.

Maybe one day.

Aleksandar

Re: [GNC] Difficulties entering share purchases

2021-07-27 Thread Geoff

Hi Eric

I am running GnuCash 4.4 (on Windows) and when I duplicate a share
purchase transaction it doesn't change any of the values.

If I then edit one of the values, a recalculation dialogue box pops up
telling me that "The values entered for this transaction are
inconsistent." and asking me "Which value would you like to have
recalculated?" Shares / Price / Value.

See attached screenshot.

Hope this helps.

Geoff

upgraded my operating system to Ubuntu 21.04 (which I am running "On X
Org" as "Wayland" causes KeePassXC to fail) and installed GnuCash 4.4
(with F::Q 1.49 but that is probably irrelevant). Recently I bought some
more shares and things seemed to go a bit wappy.

Of lesser importance is the presentation of the tab that shows activity
of a past purchase of shares:
Fig 1 shows the tab when a dividend payment is highlighted, note the
purchase of shares on 21/1/21;
Fig 2 shows the same tab when the purchase is highlighted, the number of
shares has changed from 216 to 2;
Fig 3 shows the appearance when the constituent splits are shown, 216 is
shown;

Fig 4 shows what happens when the first split is highlighted.

Of far greater importance (to me) is what happens when I want to record
a purchase now. My past practice (which I have used for at least six
years) is to duplicate an earlier purchase and edit it to show the
details of the current purchase.

Fig 5 shows the initial state of the record which will be edited;
Fig 6 shows the new transaction, the number of shares has been changed
from 216 to 100;
Fig 7 shows what happens when I tab out of the shares column (the
intention being to delete the price, edit the buy cost and allow GnuCash
to calculate the unit price of the shares), the 100 changes to 1;
Fig 8 shows the effect of deleting the share price, entering the total
price (1000.00) and tabbing to the next field (the number of shares
disappears);
Fig 9 shows the effect of entering the transaction there was no
invitation to recalculate the share price (of course I expect the
Imbalance to appear)

For completeness: I have tried the same sequence of events on Ubuntu on
Wayland with the same results and I have set up a dummy set of accounts
and followed the instructions in the manual with consistent results.

It's almost certainly me at fault and I will accept the laughter when my
idiocy is pointed out but, please, somebody point it out to me.

In anticipation

Eric

PS: I initially suspected that the change in values that occur might
have something to do with the "smallest fraction traded" settings.
Changing these settings does affect what is displayed but not the
overall effect of failing to show the new purchase.

[GNC] Fixed decimal separator on MacOS Big Sur 11.4

2021-07-27 Thread Yves Forget via gnucash-user
Hello,

I’m using GnuCash on MacOS with language/region set to French Canada.

I had a problem with the decimal separator in GnuCash since updating from MacOS
10.13 to 10.14 . I upgraded to Big Sur (11.4) in the last few days, and the
problem persisted.

In went into my installed Gnucash.app, in Contents/Resources, and noticed there
was no french resources, even if the application is in french on my Mac (french
menus, buttons, etc). I just created an empty fr.lproj folder, restarted the
application, and my decimal separator is now the comma, the default value for
french Canada. The fix may also work on other MacOS versions between 10.14 and
11.4 .

Duplicating the en.lproj folder and renaming the copy to fr.lproj would make
GnuCash bring the English manuals when accessing the Help/Tutorial and Concepts
Guide menu. It’s probably better than an empty fr.lproj folder where the
Tutorial menu would bring nothing.

[GNC] Scheduled transaction with variable amount

The CSS-based stylesheet uses CSS directly, so adjust the font-size attributes
in the elements you want to change. If you don't know CSS works you might
prefer to switch back to the stylesheet you were using before and edit it
instead. Go to the fonts tab and use the font chooser to select the typeface
and size you want for each element.

[GNC] Invoice font size has changed

2021-07-27 Thread coolnodje
Hi,

the invoice I print from Gnucash have become printed smaller for some
reason.
I can't explain it, nor can I find any place to control this. (I
switched from Default to CSS experimental which makes it slightly larger
but still quite smaller than it used to be)

I upgraded to 4.6 as soon as it was out (I'm using brew on MacOS ) and
believe my last invoice was made with this same latest version.
I rebooted my computer, which was on for a lot longer than when the new
release was installed. (it's not supposed to explain anything, but as I
keep Gnucash open all the time these days, switching book accounts, it
feels like it's the most meaningful change I've made to my Gnucash ... sic)

thanks for any help

Re: [GNC] Australian cash residuals - Non- GnuCash question

2021-07-27 Thread Geoff

Hi Chris

Usually the cash residual is carried forward and is included in the
calculation of your DRP (dividend reinvestment plan) shares in the next
dividend.

The balance is tallied at the individual SRN level within each company
by the share registry. You should see this on your dividend statements
for each SRN, which should show you the balance brought forward from the
last dividend, and the remaining balance carried forward after your
shares are purchased. (See attached Wesfarmers advice for an example).

I am not an accountant, but in GnuCash I lump all such balances into a
single "clearing account" called Assets:DRP Cash Carried Forward"
because (at least with my portfolio) it is never a material amount.

To extend the topic, the share registries have a process to consolidate
or merge your multiple SRNs in a company into a single holding if you
wish to reduce your administrative burden:-

https://boardroomlimited.com.au/corp/assets/pdf/investor-forms/share-registry/Consolidation%20of%20Holdings.pdf

https://www-au.computershare.com/Investor/Content/ab9d6057-5a56-4e7e-a32b-02716d5268a7

https://www.linkmarketservices.com.au/corporate/forms/holding-management/Link_ASN001_Interactive.pdf

Furthermore, if you trade with a broker, you can request that the SRN
holdings be converted onto your CHESS HIN (holder identification
number). Most of the online brokers offer this via self-service,
provided the registration details (name & address) match up. For example:-

Hope this helps.

and I don't think I could get an answer I would trust from the Australian
share registries help lines.

I wonder if any Australian investors can help me with this.

If you reinvest your dividends and have multiple share holdings in a
particular company under different

SRN's (Security Ref Nos), is the cash residual (difference between total
dividend amount and the value of the

shares added because of the dividend reinvestment) held by SRN
(Investor/Company/SRN) or just a total per

investor (Investor/Company)?

For those non Australians, who may be wondering, this cash residual occurs
because, in my experience,

all Australian companies dividend reinvestment plans only reinvest a whole
no of shares.

(Although there has been 1 company that actually rounds up the no of shares
issued, so actually gives you more

shares than the dividend total - a real pain to account for).

I'd like to know because I've recently had to start dealing with multiple
SRN's per company and I have another

System I wrote (MS Access if anyone Aussie is interested - pls email me
direct) which I need to modify to handle

the multiple SRN's per company.

I suppose different share registries could do different things, so I'm
really mostly interested in what

ComputerShare & Link do.
