[GNC] Need help importing Investment transactions

2021-12-22 Thread David Carlson
I am currently running release 3.8 in Linux Lite, which is Ubuntu 20.04
under a different label. I think that the CSV transaction import has not
been changed, between 3.8 and 4.9. If that is not correct, then some of my
issues may be bugs that have been fixed.

I have read the current help manual section on importing transactions in
csv format which
gave me a start, but there are some things that I cannot make work
correctly.

I have come to the conclusion that my brokerage house World Equity Group
CSV exports probably need to be massaged, and possibly split up but there
are a couple of issues that I need to understand in order to determine how
to fix the import data and to assign the proper names to the various fields.

One issue is that in one test many transactions were imported as single
line unbalanced transactions with no transfer account, not even an
assignment to an unbalance account. Why did GnuCash accept unbalanced
transactions containing amounts? Applying Check and Repair to some of those
transactions did not balance them to an unbalance account.

Another issue is that I have not figured out which column name should be
used for the number of shares in a purchase or sale transaction.

Yet another issue would be whether I can import everything into the
brokerage account or do I need to do something special to get stock
transactions assigned to the proper security account when appropriate?

A fourth issue would be whether I need to use the Multi-Split feature and,
if so, how to format the CSV file to make it assign the correct split lines
to the correct base transaction, and save it in CSV format if I built the
spreadsheet in LibreOffice Calc or equivalent

Re: [GNC] GNC 4.9 build with libicu library versions

2021-12-22 Thread Mike Commissaris
Thanks for the fast reply.
You are correct, libwebkit2gtk is the same version in both machines,
2.34.1-1, but the depends are different:
libicu63 in the machine running linux kernel 5.10
libicu67 in the machine running linux kernel 5.15
So at this point I don't know where to go to get to where the 5.10 kernel
machine will depend on libicu67.
I am not linux-knowledgeable enough yet. looks like I may need to upgrade
the kernel.

Arc, your email suggests to me that you have impaired vision.
If you (or someone else) makes a suitable css file for Gnucash for
people with impaired vision, it would be good to share on the wiki.

Yes, but it must be coded into the string passed to the widget; the widget
styling accessible through gtk3.css applies only to the whole string. Writing a
user-usable interface to style parts of the full account name would be an, um,
interesting challenge for a very experienced Gtk-stack developer.

If that is utterly incomprehensible the simple answer is No.

Re: [GNC] GnuCash Dark Theme Needed

2021-12-22 Thread john
Don't worry too much about formatting. It's an email list, so format it the way
you would any other plain-text email.

GnuCash isn't a Windows native application so it doesn't know anything about
Windows theme settings. In general GnuCash obeys the Gtk theme, but there's one
exception: The green bar display in the register. You can turn that off in
Preferences>Register by unchecking "Use GnuCash built in color scheme", the
first item under Graphics.

To get light text on dark, open (create if necessary)
AppData\Local\gtk-3.0\settings.ini in Notepad or some other plain-text editor.
Make it look like
[Settings]
gtk-application-prefer-dark-theme=true

To boost the font size create a second file in that directory, gtk.css. In it
add
#gnc-id-main-window {
font-size: 20pt;
}

See https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/GTK3 for
more ways to style GnuCash.

John Ralls

The fact that THEY are selling the candle for  £12 has nothing to do
with you (and your books). You are selling it to them for £6

Correct me if I m wrong, but is this a situation where you are selling
both "retail" and "wholesale"? And that this is making you perceive that
you are "losing" the difference between the wholesale price and the
retail price? Why? What is the ratio of your sales, wholesale vs retail?
Suppose that it were instead 100% wholesale? Would your perception of
"loss" still make sense?

<< please note -- these are questions for you to think bout, not give us
answers to >>

Now suppose the other way around, your business is mostly retail. They
you might make provisions for a "discount" of 50% for select customers.
Since I don't use the business features, I can't help with how you set
that us on the invoice.

I do understand why you see this as a "commissions" expense, but you are
giving up ownership of the stock to them. At least I think that is how
you have set things up. In the possible case that you have set things up
that they can return stock (along with partial payment of the invoice;
what portion sold) then that is a different situation. I do not know
what is customary for that sort of business so I strongly suggest you go
through business accounting texts till you find that specific example.

Michael D Novack

PS -- there are a couple other sorts of (standard) business arrangements
for which I haven't a clue what is customary. For example, I know that
businesses that sell "on approval" usually send invoices, but they
expect some if not often all to be "returns".

Hi Mike,

GnuCash depends on WebkitGtk, which in turn depends on libicu. I know we have
to version-
lock icu in the Windows build of gnucash to match the icu version that is
required by
WebkitGtk. Perhaps it's WebkitGtk as well that's preventing you from using a
more recent
version of libicu in your office ?

[GNC] Another Beginner Accounting Question

2021-12-22 Thread Patrick Skelton
Hi,

Just when I was thinking I had accumulated all the pieces of the jigsaw I
need, I discovered the A/R account.

I have a shop that charges 50% margin on whatever they sell. So, if they
sell one candle for £12 then I will invoice them only for £6. They get 30

There is a Discount column in the invoice but this doesn't seem to show up
anywhere in the accounts. I'd like to have some record of the money I am

Can anyone offer any advice on how this might best be approached, please?
