[GNC] GNC used side by side with GNC Andriod

2022-01-28 Thread Jeff
I know that they are entirely separate and discrete applications.  So no
lambasting please.

I have successfully imported more qif files than I care to count from
Android to GNC up until I "upgraded" my cell phone.  Great cooperation
between you and the developers of the Android version.  Pat on many
backs of both development teams.

Now I am getting an error of invalid stock entries on import into GNC,
when there are no stock entries on the Android side  ( I have looked at
the qif file and there are no stock exchanges, nor do I own or sell sell
stocks yet).  Only day to day cash, bank, or credit card transactions.
I'll be flipped if I can find a stock entry in the Android qif files.

Has anyone else encountered this or a similar issue?

Re: [GNC] Can't get Scheduled Transactions to work

2022-01-28 Thread David Carlson
Jed,

Scheduled transactions have had an issue for a long time that may explain
part of what you are seeing, as it involves templates showing up
unexpectedly in certain situations. see
https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=741674, which, coincidentally is
just now being addressed, but it does not explain everything that you are
describing. One other characteristic of scheduled transactions that is not
obvious is the fact that when an existing transaction is taken as a
template to create a new scheduled transaction, that transaction does not
become a vector to use to point the editor to the template for further
editing like transactions which have actually been created by the Since
Last Run demon. In other words, I can add a little information but I do
not have enough information to solve your concern. Sorry that I cannot
help more.

Re: [GNC] Can't get Scheduled Transactions to work

2022-01-28 Thread Jed Taylor
Second update -

Well, more issues.

I went into the ST editor to look at what I've done so far, and for each of
the five I've created so far, the template is empty. If the template is
empty, instead of having the correct accounts to post the transaction to,
how is it going work on 2022-02-01?

GnuCash v4.6 on Windows 10.

I'm working on setting up the books for my condo association, which has 20
units. With 20 units, I'd like to have GnuCash automatically post the
monthly assessment due from each unit, which is a different amount for each,
on the first of the month to the G/J.

I've read the Help on STs, and followed the steps, as well as gotten into

I'm testing this feature using only one unit to start. The books open in
late 2020-09, so the first entry for assessments is dated 2020-10-01.

I created a G/J entry that posts the amount for the unit to its A/R & Income
accounts. So far, so good. Then, I select that transaction and click on
the "Schedule" button and tell the dialog I want a monthly transaction.
I've tried this using both 10-01 and 11-01 as the start date for the ST, and
I'm getting the same results. I have also tried this using the current date
for my PC's date as well as resetting my PCs date to 2020-11-01.

Each time I can get the ST to post, the two account fields are filled with
hexadecimal characters rather than actual accounts from the template
transaction. The account balances remain unchanged. If I go to the G/J and
click on the entry, GC tells me the account doesn't exist and asks me if I
want to create it.

If I examine the entry for the ST, when I go to the Template window, the
information for the transaction is blank. When I fill in the information
there, it accepts it, but when it posts, again, I get the same nonsense hex
for the accounts rather than what I've assigned.

What I expected to happen when I set up the ST is for every month between
2020-10-01 and 2022-01-01 to post to the G/J and have the ST slice of the
app tell me that the next one ready to post would be for 2022-02.

Clearly, I'm missing something. What is it?

TIA.

Re: [GNC] Can't get Scheduled Transactions to work

2022-01-28 Thread Jed Taylor
Update - now that I've got the first month of transactions entered, and I'm
going back to see if the ST feature behaves more as expected, I'm getting it
to create the monthly A/R entry for each unit between 2020-11 and 2022-01.
And those monthly entries are what show up in the G/J page showing me the
created transactions to review.

Unfortunately, I'm also getting in the main G/J tab a transaction dated
today, 2022-01-28, with the garbage hexadecimals info in the accounts fields
to post the transaction to, and I have to manually delete this last
transaction after I tell it to execute the ST process.

Shouldn't what's in the Review Transactions G/J match *exactly* with what's
been posted to G/J? Why the extra transaction dated today when it knows
that all the others are the first day of the month?

Thanks.

Re: [GNC] Updates

2022-01-28 Thread davidcousens49
Rhonda,

I had a similar problem recently. GNuCash would not remember my datafile and
defaulted back to the default data settings on my laptop which I had not
upgraded in parallel with my desktop and I could not change any of the user
settings. This was a problem with gsettings which stores the user's preference
settings for GnuCash.

It ended up being that I had not removed a previous version completely
particularly the schemas associated with glib-2.0. It is also possible I had an
old version of one of the library files on the laptop as I did upgrade all the
dependencies and rebuild the program while trouble shooting my problem but
after that I had to do the following.
On Linux these schema fileswere located in "/usr/shar/glib-2.0/schemas/". The
files in this location should have filenames which look like
"org.gnucash.GnuCash." but if they are from an earlier version
they will look like "org.gnucash.". I had to remove the
previous version of GnuCash then delete any files in that location then
reinstall GnuCash to get it to operate correctly again. After that my datafile
loaded on startup and I was again able to change user preferences.

There is some information in the wiki
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Configuration_Locations#GSettings although the
information there only seems to be relevant to an installation of GnuCash in the
users home directory using Flatpak.

If you aren't on Linux I am not sure where to look for these files but Derek
John or Geert may be able to help.

Re: [GNC] credit card minimum payment due

2022-01-28 Thread Adrien Monteleone
While formulas and variables are possible with Scheduled Transactions,
unfortunately, they can't grab the current account balance. (and there
are no 'if:then' logic functions possible anyway, just straight math)

But you can choose to schedule the payment regardless of the balance,
but set it as a reminder rather than auto-create. You can then preview
and approve the transaction to be created if it is needed.

Adrien

In my case it is minimum fixed amount due automatically for the credit card
payment if total charges is over say $35.00 when statement period closes.

Re: [GNC] Could you please add a "reset to default" function?

2022-01-28 Thread Adrien Monteleone

That is an interesting request.

In the meantime, you could start a new file, examine the default
preferences, and write them down. Then go back to your main file and
change them back accordingly. (there *might* be a page on the wiki
documenting these already, I haven't looked, but I suspect it is there)

The nice thing about the preferences is that they take effect
immediately without a restart. So if the preference involves visual
display, you can toggle them and see the effect in real time. Then just
leave them where you like them.

Re: [GNC] Updates

Have you tried File > Open?

Then navigate to where you saved your data file. It should open and then
when you close GnuCash, it will remember this location in the future.

Since you are on Windows, you also have the option to double-click the
data file itself and GnuCash will launch and open it. (those of us on
MacOS can't do this)

I seem to recall a bug where the app forgot its list of recently used
files. I thought that was solved though.

Be sure to run Actions > Check & Repair > Check & Repair All while
viewing the Accounts tab.

So, your first mistake: You cannot run GnuCash out of the DMG. You need
to copy it locally.

The first thing you need to do when you open the DMG is you need to
drag-and-copy the GnuCash app bundle into /Applications.

THEN you can double-click from /Applications/Gnucash to run it.

All it does is run "install-fq-mods.cmd" which is in the "bin"
subdirectory of wherever you installed Gnucash (default being "program
files (x86)".

Go there in Explorer, find the .cmd, and run it.

4.current should be able to read 4.6 data files just fine.

Could you take a step back and give us the details about exactly:
1) what you downloaded (and from where)
2) *exactly* how you "installed" it

If you do it correctly you should have the GnuCash App bundle in
/Applications and should be able to just double-click on the app bundle
from your /Applications folder to start GnuCash.

Good Luck,
