I use software which automatically syncs, and in that case you need to
exclude LCK and log and dated-gnucash files from sync.

It's really very simple.
Just change where you save under "save-as" and your file will now be in
that place.
That hasn't removed the old copies, so you either would manually move
it (easy) or edit the list of last opened files (harder).

When you first opened "save-as" you were shown the current file
location. You chose this when you installed Gnucash first up, and
didn't need to remember.

Re: [GNC] Changing where my data is held

2022-02-12 Thread David H
David L.

Not a preferences thing as such, just use either File >> Save As and
navigate to desired destination and click OK - just like saving a document
somewhere :-)

OR copy/move your gnucash data file manually using Windows Explorer and
then re-open from new location so Gnucash knows where it is from there on.

Some advice? I ALWAYS update my gnucash data file locally and then copy it
up to a shared drive, NAS/Cloud/Whatever using FreeFileSync (
https://freefilesync.org/) - versions for Windows, Linux and Mac OS. Just
means depending on what pc I'm on I have to be a bit pedantic to make sure
I sync up the latest updated one and sync it down on the other pc if I'm
not on my usual machine. Once you have set it up it's pretty easy to click
on "Compare" to see if any changes have been made and then click on "SYNC"
to download the changed version. Bonus with this is if you stuff some
updates up you can just re-sync the old file back down and over-write the
botched file :-)

Re: [GNC] Customer Deposits

2022-02-12 Thread Keith Fetterman
Hi Adrien,

Thank you for sharing your experience and suggestions. It’s too much work to
generate the reports outside of GnuCash, so I am going to follow your lead and
switch to doing pre-payments. I thought it was important to show the customer
deposits in a separate liability account. I hadn’t thought of the pre-payments
as a having a contra affect on the accounts receivables, which makes sense.

Thanks
Keith

[GNC] Finance Quote installation Mac

2022-02-12 Thread First Name Last Name
Hello,

I followed the instructions in the manual for finance quote installation for
mac.

I downloaded x code.
I ran gnc fq update
It ran in terminal for a few minutes.. then said ‘process completed’.

When in gnucash the ‘online quotes ’ option is still greyed out.

When I run ‘gnc fq check’ it says i need to install the perl module
finance::quote

When looking over the long string of text from the installation,

It seems that there were in fact some errors.

Eg:

First try:

88 warnings generated

Error 225

Errors/warnings found in prerequisites

2nd attempt:

Do not have write permissions…

Can’t create ‘/Library/Perl/5.3/Web’
….. permission denied at …(directory) .. line489

…

Error 13

….

Errors/warnings found in prerequisites

…..

And a lot of other info that goes way over my head.

Is this normal? Is this what is causing the problem? Is it possible to get this
going for a lay person? I simply did the default options during the
installation as suggested in the manual.

If anyone can help I’d really appreciate it. Let me know if there is any
specific info from the installation terminal text that would help.

Thank you

Re: [GNC] No Stock Quotes - OS Monterey, Gnucash 4.8(Build ID: 4.8a+(2021-09-28))

2022-02-12 Thread dennis adams
John,
It is finally working. Tried the “gnc-fq-dump -v yahoo_json XOM” command a few
times and always got same “Internal Server” error. Tried “sudo cpan” to start
download of Mozilla::CA process with same results stating “ running another
cpan process” despite finding no cpan running processes in Activity Monitor and
eventually using “sudo killall cpan”. Finally just told it to overwrite the
lock file. Once that was done, ran the “install Mozilla::CA” command which it
did and after that quote download worked. I’ve attached the Terminal dump in
case you are interested. Again, I appreciate all your help and patience and

No, "internal server error" indicates that something went wrong on
Alphavantage's end. Try again after a few minutes or using yahoo_json instead:

 Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/Resources/bin/gnc-fq-dump -v yahoo_json XOM

Ran gnc-fq-dump for stock XOM with result indicating the Alphavantage key was
missing:

However, in checking GC Preferences, Online quotes, the Alpha Vantage API Key

“ALPHAVANTAGE_API_KEY=

Finance::Quote fields Gnucash uses:

 currency: ** missing **<=== required
 last: **missing**  <=\
  nav: **missing** <=== one of these

So even though I have the Alphavantage key in place, it is somehow not being

Dennis,

You can examine the running processes in /Applications/Utilities/Actiivity
Monitor and kill them from there, or you can just nuke the lot with
 sudo killall cpan
if you're reasonably sure that there shouldn't be any left running.

Re: [GNC] Download GnuCash issue

2022-02-12 Thread Jon Schewe
Maybe that's all that is available.
Can you post the specific text of the dialog here? That may help in
determining what the issue is.
GnuCash does say it supports Windows 8. One possibility is that GnuCash
is built as a 64-bit application and you have a 32-bit version of
Windows. You can follow the instructions here to verify if you have a
32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows
https://softwaregroup.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115012567728-How-to-check-if-Windows-8-and-8-1-is-32-bit-or-64-bit
I'm not sure if GnuCash for Windows is built as 64-bit only. Can
someone using Windows confirm this?

That sounds like you are trying to drive a Tesla on a cow path. Why try?

[GNC] Download GnuCash issue

2022-02-12 Thread davidvernonlong
Hi, I downloaded the latest version of GnuCash (4.9) onto an older laptop
running Windows 8.1 , but when I tried to run the setup got a message that
it could not run on this machine. Same thing with an older version of
GnuCash. I have about 11 GB of disk space remaining on this machine. What
could be the issue?

Thanks

Re: [GNC] getting Online_Quotes to work on MacOS

2022-02-12 Thread coolnodje

Cheers, this got me `gnc-fq-check` working.

Now I found the doc dealing with this type of problem :)
Sorry about it, one shouldn't ask for support for Friday night install
attempts...

Hi,

I was just following the Online_Quotes doc, installing Finance::Quote and
trying to get some quotes.

I've been doing:

➜  bin sudo ./gnc-fq-update

[...]

All tests successful.
Files=56, Tests=82,  4 wallclock secs ( 0.06 usr  0.06 sys + 3.38 cusr  0.51
csys =  4.01 CPU)
Result: PASS
   BPSCHUCK/Finance-Quote-1.51.tar.gz
Tests succeeded but one dependency not OK (Test::Perl::Critic)
   BPSCHUCK/Finance-Quote-1.51.tar.gz
   [dependencies] -- NA
➜  bin ./gnc-fq-check

You need to install the following Perl modules:
   Finance::Quote

Use your system's package manager to install them,
or run 'gnc-fq-update' as root.
missing-lib
➜  bin

I'm not too sure why Finance::Quote isn't found after an install.
Relaunching my terminal trying in a fresh shell doesn't make any difference.

I'm using zsh on latest MacOS, have setup ALPHAVANTAGE_API_KEYin Gnucash GUI
preference and in .zshrc.

Maybe because Finance::Quote's install failed, indicated by "Tests succeeded but one
dependency not OK (Test::Perl::Critic)"

The workaround is to run
   sudo cpan -f -i B::Keywords
then run gnc-fq-update again.

John Ralls
