Thanks Adrien, The Software Manager has an image which had 2.2.9 on it. I didn't scroll down to the details, just assumed the image was of the installed version - my bad. apt-cache policy gnucash also lists it as 3.8 the same package as the Ubuntu archive. I hadn't realized LM 21 was out. I only checked a couple of weeks ago. Thanks. My symlink works; I can cd into the tree via the symlink in a terminal session, open files in the through it, etc. Thanks for your response anyway. Re: [GNC] computer with Linux
David, I just checked a VM of Mint 20.3 I have and the GnuCash version is 3.8, not 2.2.9. Mint 20.x appears to be based on Ubuntu Focal. (20.04) Still, yes, 3.8 is quite aged, but not as ancient as 2.2.9. Mint 21 Vanessa was released and I see it has 4.8 in its repo. (based on upstream Ubuntu 22.04, so presumably that's what Ubuntu Jammy users get too, though I haven't checked) That's much more reasonably 'recent' if someone doesn't want to tread the Flatpak waters. Though, since it is so easy to install, I'd recommend that route too. Regards, Adrien On 7/31/22 5:44 PM, davidcousen...@gmail.com wrote: James, I presume you downloaded Linux Mint 20.3. Re: [GNC] computer with Linux
James, GnuCash doesn't provide 'downloads' for Linux. (that is, ready to install and run.) GnuCash instead provides the source code for download to 'build' GnuCash. This is probably *not* what you want. (for advanced users and developers) You install it from *within* Linux (not downloading from a website) using various means: 1. Use the Mint Software Manager. 2. Use an alternative 'graphical pacakage manager' such as Synaptic. 3. Use a 'command-line package manager' such as apt, apt-get, or synaptic (also has a command-line interface) If you need, or want, the latest GnuCash version and it is not available by one of the above means, look into installing Flatpak support, and then installing the Flatpack version of GnuCash. (if you are a Linux beginner, this is a slightly more advanced method, and I'd stick with option #1 above until you are more familiar with Linux.) That only works for me if that part of the tree is already expanded. I tested this myself before sending my initial reply because it was my first thought to try. Re: [GNC] Find
It isn't supposed to bring up a list of accounts, only Find Account does that. Find is designed to give you a 'register' of transactions matching your criteria. So the idea was an alternative way to find out where the account is in the tree by searching for transactions assigned to the account, then using the Edit Account function to see what the parent is. (and really its place in the tree) But I agree, Find Account *should* find it. What is the name of the account? A direct copy/paste into the message is best from the Edit Account dialog. Character encodings might be at play. As a test, try copy/pasting the account name from that dialog into the Find Account dialog and see if it turns up. No, Edit>Find is not an option for finding an account, nor is it a bug. Read the dialog's title. If you are anywhere in the account tree on the Accounts tab and just start typing, it will take you to the matching account. Re: [GNC] Stock Split - am I doing this right?
I used the stock split tool under the tool menu and all I entered was the number of shares that should be added. There’s an option to enter the price too but I didn’t enter anything for it. I did this for the Amazon & Google splits and it worked fine. I didn’t have to calculate anything —— I smell carrots a-cooking and where there’s carrots, there’s a rabbit. — Yosemite Sam > On Jul 30, 2022, at 7:11 PM, replicon wrote: > > I'm trying to capture the AMZN stock split that took place a while back. > > I was surprised by the UI, since instead of "enter split ratio" or > something like that, it wants me to manually calculate additional stock. > > Is the correct way to do it: > > - Multiply stock holdings by 19, and add that as additional stock (since > it's 20-to-1) > - Set the "new price" to the value it had when the split occurred > > My concern is, since stock purchases we track in GNUCash include the basis, > doesn't the stock split tool cause it to lose track of cost basis? > > I imagine the correct way to track things like capital gains is that any > transaction where stock was received at a certain price should be > supplanted with a new transaction for 20x that much stock, at 1/20 of the > value at time of receipt. What version of GnuCash and on what operating system? I am using Gnucash 11.1 on Mac OS13 The account does appear I the account Tree but it was quicker to find it using the Find Account feature. Another option is *from the Accounts tab* use Edit >Find (the plain one, not Find Account) to search for transactions. This does not bring up a list of accounts. Re: [GNC] Stock Split - am I doing this right?
Depending on your situation, the built in mechanisms for calculating your basis and subsequently your gain may or may not generate accurate results. The lot feature is great when it works, which for me has been about 80%of the time. But if it doesn't get the right numbers (for whatever reason) then the lot feature can cause a world of pain. Holdings that have overlapping lots, or ones where particular lots are sold to minimize gain, or have complex origins (think gifted stock, or stock obtained through employee stock options, and yes occasionally split stocks) can have especially puzzling and inaccurate results. My practice now is to consult the brokerage statement when processing all sales and change the gains figures in GnuCash to match those on the statement. After all, the tax authorities are going to be using those figures when they hit me up for tax payments. While this would seemingly contradict the concept that we are supposed to use our books to monitor the accuracy of our broker's figures, the reality is that I don't have the skill, knowledge, or background to actually challenge the figures they've provided in regards to gains on sales, so I just accept their numbers on this front. Your decision, is of course up to you. David T.
