Re: [GNC] monthly balance report

2022-11-28 Thread Adrien Monteleone

You could do a Multi-Column report.

Place an Account Summary report in one section with just your selected
accounts.

Place a Transaction Report in another section, again, with selected
accounts, sort by Account as PrimaryKey, and play with the Display tab
to remove clutter as desired.

Then save that report configuration. Next time you run it, you only need
to update the date range in the General tabs for each section.

As for layout, you can use two columns, or one column with two sections
one on top of the other.

Adrien

I think these numbering conventions have been in place almost as long as
Microsoft has used local time for time stamps in MS-DOS. I think they
should not be abandoned until the respective media are abandoned.

Re: [GNC] getting price quotes

2022-11-28 Thread R Losey
Alphavantage is now the default, and you have to get a free ID to use the
service (there is information regarding how to acquire an ID).

Be aware, though -- Alphavantage adds a one-minute delay for each set of
five stocks you update. (That is, five stocks will take seconds, but six
stocks will take over a minute).

I changed to what David suggested for my stock updates. I would prefer to
have Multiple, but not use Alphavantage, but that doesn't seem to be an
option at present.

I also do what Andren does, but I do see your point.

However, I find that GnuCash remembers previous entries, and suggests them,
so once I have entered "Some Vendor", once I get to whatever is unique (So,
perhaps), it prompts for the entire name. This helps keep the vendor names
consistent.

This brings up a good point; perhaps GnuCash should always use two-digit

Re: [GNC] Should one use Accounts Payable if a vendor is paid immediately ?

2022-11-28 Thread Adrien Monteleone
I was about to reply the same. I've never had an issue in many years of
using GnuCash because I start typing a Payee/Payor and Autofill keeps my
fingers/brain from flubbing the remainder. If Autofill appears to not be
'responding' as I type someone I've entered many times before, that's a
sure sign I've got a typo in the first 2–3 letters, so I can fix it
before proceeding.

Of course, go ahead and raise a bill. There's no rule against it. The OP
was about a quicker method. Regular transactions are the only option.
(with caveats)

Re: [GNC] can't create a transaction report

2022-11-28 Thread Adrien Monteleone

That's normal.

You are 'installing' it, correct?

That is, opening the .dmg you downloaded, then dragging and dropping the
GnuCash icon to your /Applications folder, then running it from
/Applications or via Launchpad or your Dock. (you will likely have to
open it twice, the first time is just to tell Gatekeeper the app is
safe, after that it should take only one-click to launch)

Since you were already using GnuCash on your Mac, I could guess you did
so, but it doesn't hurt to ask and verify.

Some people report weird things when trying to run it from within the .dmg

Re: [GNC] Should one use Accounts Payable if a vendor is paid

2022-11-28 Thread Eric Hammond
David,

I create a vendor Bill (and payment of) for all business purchases, no matter
what the timing or amount.
It does not take much time, and gives me a detailed document and reference for:
future purchases; warrantees; tax filing; client tracking; etc.

All the best,
Eric

For securities traded on U. S. Exchanges it usually works well to use Yahoo
as JSON as your source.

When I go for the stock prices, I get a, Cant get stock prices.  I when to the
where the stock/tickers are. As I edited three of them. As I notice they are
going/looking at Alphavantage, US.  so I did something wrong or not.

I'd respectfully suggest that Autofill is your friend here; Typos in the Payee
should be fairly hard (but not impossible; your point is certainly taken!) to
get into place, once you are on more than one txn to any given vendor.

The trouble with that is that the text fields aren't validated. It's
fine if you never, ever, make a typo; but I'm not perfect. If I make a
typo in an account name, I know it immediately and can fix it. But if I
mistype "Some Vendor" as "SomeVendor" or "Some Vendoir" I may not
notice, and then any report that filters on Description will be incomplete.
