Re: [GNC] Including document paths in reports

2023-05-21 Thread Vincent Dawans
Are you aware that the transaction report already has the option to display
not the document path itself but a mark that there is a linked document? It
just shows L to the left of the amount column when there is a document
(with a link to it when you click on the L). If there isn't a document then
it stays blank. It's the link checkbox on the display option to enable this.

Changing the code to replace the L with the actual document path is
relatively easy but whether this change would make it to the actual
official release I can't say. It's yet another option in an already long
list of options. I can certainly propose the chance but can't guarantee it
would be accepted.

The alternative would be to implement this in a custom report. I am happy
to help with that but only if the current L / no L option is not enough,
and only if you are comfortable installing a custom report.

Inventory accounting can be done in multiple stages depending on your
purchase, processing and selling. i presume your example is direct
purchase of finished product and selling at a margin on cash. if so

Inventory purchase
Asset: Inventory: Product: Dr 1000
Asset: Current asset: Bank: Cr 1000

Sales

Asset: Current Asset: Bank: Dr 840
Asset: Inventory: Product: Cr 600
Income: Profit from sales: Cr 240

so your inventory account will be Dr 400 (cost of your available 4
units)

if you have credit transactions, then you need to use Account payable
and Account receivable

I am slowly wrapping my head around things, kinda stuck on a question
about accounting for unsold inventory. Say I bought 10 widgets, for 100
each, my cost of good sold is 1000; I sold 6 for 140 each. My sales is
840, but my cost of good sold is only 600, not 1000, How do I account
for the 4 remaining in inventory.

[GNC] Including document paths in reports

2023-05-21 Thread Brook Milligan
Is there any way to include the path to linked documents in a, for example,
transaction report?

While this is not a normal financial need, it would be really helpful for
auditing that transaction information is complete. For example, it would be
useful for finding transactions that lack corresponding documentation to
eliminate mistakes.

Thanks a lot.

Brook

Hi Stephen/Bob/Gyle/all,

Gyle: I emailed Bask Bank (customersupp...@baskbank.com), Presidential
Bank (em...@presidential.com), & CIT Bank (serv...@cit.com) on Thursday,
May 18 at about 7 PM PST and have not heard back from any of them yet
(CIT did send an automated response immediately). We will see what they
say.

Bob: I made a comment on Huntington Bank's Facebook page
(https://www.facebook.com/HuntingtonBank/) about 15 minutes ago because
they do not seem to have email customer service options on the Contact
Us page on their website
(https://www.huntington.com/customer-service/contact-us). We will see
what they say.

Stephen: you said "JP Morgan Chase Bank provides OFX/QFX format
downloads of Checking and Savings Accounts" do you mean
https://www.jpmorganchase.com/ or https://www.jpmorgan.com/global or
https://www.chase.com/ or something else? JPM is an enormous financial
institution (https://www.google.com/finance/quote/JPM:NYSE) and I don't
know where to direct my inquiries.

In addition, my understanding is that there is a difference between OFX
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Financial_Exchange) and QFX
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QFX_(file_format)), but it seems like
many people are lumping them together - ?

My standard ask goes something like this:

"Hi,

I use GnuCash (https://gnucash.org/), an open source accounting
software. Does Bank allow transactional data to be downloaded in
the OFX file format
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Financial_Exchange &
https://financialdataexchange.org/ofx) or does Bank only allow
proprietary/patented/corporate file formats (like QFX, owned by Intuit)
for transactional data downloads?

Thank you,

Brad"

I changed the email subject title from the "Tax report options
(flywire)" one as the conversation only went in this direction and Alex
Aycinena, nor anyone else, added to what I was saying about the tax data
format options (see emails below).

Thank you for your help in this project!

Brad

Hi Alex/all,

Thank you for the overarching explanations about how GnuCash Tax Report
Options work and some of the issues behind that.

As I covered in my April 25 post
(https://lists.gnucash.org/pipermail/gnucash-user/2023-April/106671.html),
I have been trying to find US based FDIC insured banks that allow for
transactional data to be downloaded in the OFX file format
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Financial_Exchange). I have still
not been able to find any that do, so I dug a bit deeper (the ICBA and

(https://financialdataexchange.org/) looks better maintained and seems
to have several news items from the last month, but also has that 2020
copyright date at the bottom. FDX also has this Tax Data Exchange
section
(https://financialdataexchange.org/FDX/FDX/US-Tax/US-Tax-Forms.aspx?hkey=00bae613-7ec8-4c93-8e37-4712f09ae255)
under the "Resources" tab, but it also looks a bit stale. You may be
able to parse the technical information there better than I can, but it
might be worth a look as that Tax Data Exchange page also seems to
acknowledge what you are saying about TXF code being abandoned
("Standards-based JSON files are superior to both CSV and TXF files CSV

Or just fire up your OS's favourite hypervisor (Hyper-V for Windows, KVM on
Linux, etc) and run multiple instances.

In fact, with a single Windows VM, you can keep a tree of alternate
realities (i.e., checkpoints), and jump back and forth between different
scenarios. For example, running 4.10, you can take a checkpoint, install
5.0, test, then revert to 4.10, install 4.14, work, jump back to 5.0, and so
on. Checkpointing isn't only about reversion to past situations -- it can be
used to manage alternative presents too.

It's not necessarily new version and current version. Two versions, same
computer -

In Windows, use GnuCash installed on system for testing and the desired
