Re: [GNC] Get Quotes under Ver 4.14 v 5.0 or 5.1 or 5.2 or 5.3

2023-06-26 Thread David H
It's a perl script - basically a text file which you can open with Notepad
if you want to look at the contents. Run it in a command prompt window
using perl as follows - perl "C:\Program Files
(x86)\gnucash\bin\gnc-fq-update" - you need double quotes around the file
path as it contains a space.

2023-06-26 Thread Steve Miller
Ok, from searching around it appears your suggestion is indeed what I need
to do, eg run gnc-fq-update. In the gnucash bin directory I see a file with
that name, but how on earth do I run it? It appears to just be a text
file. Also, when I go to the start menu, there is no longer a folder for
gnucash, just the main program app so no program in there w that name, so
that's not helpful. I've looked in the gnucash documentation, but that
provides no info as to how to run/execute that file.

Unfortunately that is because the precision available from

not the same as it is from the API.

Try running C:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\bin\gnc-fq-update, I seem to
recall that fixed it for me on Windows when I initially went to version 5.0.

Hi!

Well, doing Alt-F7, then moving bit by bit with the arrow keys, did
work to move the window up, so it can be used to edit the Preferences
window. I thought I had tried that earlier without success, but maybe I
just wasn't doing it "right".

Unfortunately, nothing worked to resize the window. It seems to have a
minimum vertical and horizontal size programmed in, so that it can be
resized to be bigger than, but not smaller than the built-in minimum
dimensions.

BTW, regarding this problem, there did not seem to be any difference at
all between using wayland and using xorg. So that's doesn't seem to be
the source of the problem.

Anyway, thanks to David and NoobAlice for the hints!

Thanks for the 1.56_04 update.

Yup.  Been all over the distribution list.  Options:
1.  Upgrade to 5.3
2.  Turn off file compression.
3.  Save to database instead of XML

[GNC] GNUCash 5.2 Issue: Cannot Save Files Under Windows 10

2023-06-26 Thread Gee Blot
Hi,

To give the exact context: I had an old version of GNUCASH from 2021
installed, with which I had created files some time ago to experiment but
porting my Quicken files to GNU Cash was a bit tedious so I ended up
abandoning. Now I wanted to give GNUCash a new try using the latest
version (5.2), so I uninstalled the previous version which I think was
4.xx, installed version 5.2 and launched it. It is able to open the
previous files I had created with 4.xx, but I get an error message about
not enough space or permissions issue whenever I try to save. Note: Try to
save in XML format.

- I tried to create a brand new set of files using the New Account
Hierarchy Setup Wizard with all default options, same issue.
- I tried to save elsewhere, same issue all of the time (I have permission
to save at all of those places and there is enough space. I can create
files using a text editor or else... I am also able to create a new folder
with GNUCash just before saving, but it gives the error message after when
trying to save the file inside the folder).
- I tried to execute GnuCash with Administrator rights (by right clicking
on shortcut), same issue.
- I tried to uninstall 5.2, reboot, reinstall 5.2, reboot, launch and
create new files, same issue.

The exact error message is as follows:

Could not write to file (file path and name). Check that you have
permission to write to this file and that there is sufficient space to
create it.

Thank you for your help

[GNC] error msg (when trying to save): check permissions or sufficient space (neither of which make sense)

2023-06-26 Thread a b
Hi there,

I'm using GnuCash Version: 5.2 (Build ID: Flathub 5.2) on Linux.

The last time GnuCash properly worked for me was in early May; now,
whenever I try to save changes (or save as new file, or copy the *.gnucash
file elsewhere and save changes there) I get the following error message:

*msgid "Could not write to file %s. Check that you have permission to write
to this file and that there is sufficient space to create it."*

Google only returned this link so far, where that error message features:
https://lists.gnucash.org/pipermail/gnucash-changes/2017-December/015461.html

Any clues / ideas how to get unstuck here?

Many thanks!

[GNC] ANNOUNCE: GnuCash 5.3 Released

2023-06-26 Thread John Ralls
The GnuCash development team announces GnuCash 5.3, the fourth release in the
stable 5.x series. This is a snap release to fix the bug listed below.

Between 5.2 and 5.3, the following bugfixes were accomplished:

• Bug 798967 - Cannot Save to Any Path After Upgrading to 5.2 Fix
inverted if statement condition for save success flag
The following fixes and improvements were not associated with bug reports:

• Some memory cleanup by Chris Lam.
• Missing from the 5.2 release notes is that Chris streamlined the
transaction scrubbing so that each transaction gets scrubbed only once. This
improves--in some cases substantially--the time to load and to run Check and
Repair.

Re: [GNC] gnucash - Can't Save file

2023-06-26 Thread Gyle McCollam
Changing to saving the file uncompressed by changing it in preferences is the
best temporary solution. That is one of the problems with upgrading too soon.
The developers do their best, but no one is prefect. I for one am very grateful
for their efforts.

Really? Please tell me how I can recover over 2 hours of work on GnuCash ver
5.2? I mean, is there any way I can recover my changes/input which I will lose
if I now go back to ver 5.1? I am in limbo at present.

Neil,

given that there are 2 workarounds to save your file suggested in the message
posted at 00:29 (UK time) by john Ralls, you have no need to lose 2 hours of
work.

but if you have already lost the chance to save and exited GC without saving,
maybe a log reply will get you some of the lost time back?

HTH,

Experience can be a harsh teacher. You could print a report of those
transactions to PDF then try screen scraping them after you go back to 5.1,
but I don't hold out much hope for success.

Re: [GNC] gnucash - Can't Save file

2023-06-26 Thread Stephen M. Butler

If you turn off compression, you will be able to save the file.

Also, I have pulled down the first 9 patches to 5.2 and can verify that
on my Ubuntu box the file save to a compressed file does work.

Sort of general advice for any help list (not specific to gnucash)

Whenever you have a problem, before posting your request for help, LOOK
at recent entries to the list, say the last week or so. You want to see
if there have been a number of people reporting the same problem that
you have and are receiving answers about it. If so, these is no need to
add your plea for help to all the others. Not particularly helpful.

Yes, there is a problem with 5.2

[GNC] Can't save on Mac with GnuCash 5.2

2023-06-26 Thread Ronald Boyd
I downloaded and installed version 5.2 on my Mac (OS 13.4.1) yesterday. When I
tried to save the file it said I did not have permission. I checked the access
permissions for the folders and the app via Get Info but nothing changed. I
then reverted back to 5.1 and everything is working fine. Not sure what was
happening.

Thanks again

I strongly suggest an "accounting 101 for business". Gnucash automates
much of the bookkeeping process but cannot tell you the correct accounts
to be debiting or crediting. Again with the warning that I am NOT
"qualified" to be giving accounting advice:

NOT "cost of goods sold". That's the expense account where you debit the
cost of goods SOLD. As I indicated, there are other possible ways things
in inventory might need to be written off as an expense. Yes I
understand, in your case would be rare/sporadic. But that isn't a reason
not to have a separate expense from :cost of goods sold:. I don't know
what tax form you file for this business (or schedule if not on a
separate form). But on the ones I have filed "cost of goods sold" is a
line item.

Just suppose you acquired inventory and began selling from it. So you
had "sales" and "cost of goods sold". Before you has sold much of it
there was a fire in your inventory store so remaining inventory had to
be written off. What would be the result IF you did not separate that
expense from "cost of goods sold" and so "cost of goods sold" > "sales"?
Guaranteed that when your filing was examined would be flagged.

[GNC] File saving issue.

2023-06-26 Thread Andrew Channell via gnucash-user
Hi,

Since 21st June, the last time used Gnu Cash, I get a message saying I don’t
have permission or space to save my home account file: Space is okay and
permissions are as expected.

I can choose to save to the file to the usual location but if I continue I get
a message saying the lock file could not be obtained or that the database may
be in use by another user. No other user exists on the computer. Saving
anyway doesn’t actually save the file.

I tried deleting the .lck file, saving to a different file name, giving
permissions to everyone and I tried reverting to previous version (5.1), but
none of this helped.

Any ideas how I sort this?

(Gnu Cash Version is 5.2. OS is Ventura 13.4.1)

Andrew

(unfortunately for some reason I can’t connect to the server the lists are on
at the moment).

Google only returned this link so far, where that error message features:

Any clues / ideas how to get unstuck here?

how I can provide more diagnostics?

Re: [GNC] Writing off Stock - More an Accounting Question than a GnuCash one

2023-06-26 Thread Jeff

Thanks Michael and David for the helpful suggestions.

It looks like I was sort of on the right track.  These write-offs will
be very irregular (have not needed to do any for the last 6 years) so I
think I'll go along the lines suggested by David.  Just now need to get
my head around it.

Thanks again
Jeff.

Jeff,

The following treatments are generic from a basic accounting textbook and should
not be taken as accounting advice that is relevant to your specific
circumstances.

This is the direct write off method:
You write it off as an expense to the COGS account i.e credit the
Asset:Inventory account and debit the Expense:COGS account. This would usually
be used if the write off amounts are small and irregular. (Using this method can
distort the gross margin where writeoffs are significant and is not recommended
for significant writeoffs

You can also create an Expense:WriteOffs account rather than using COGS if the
amount of the write offs is significant and needs to appear as a line item in
your reports.

In the allowance method, rather than crediting the inventory account directly
you set up a contra sub account of the Asset :Inventory account usually named
something like Asset:Inventory:InventoryReserve and credit that and again debit
the expense account. This is the usual method where the inventory may have lost
value but isn't being disposed of immediately.

At actual disposal of the asset the Reserve account is debited and the Inventory
account is credited.

If the value of inventory falls below its cost, it is usually written down
rather than written off and a separate expense account Expense:Write Downs is
used instead of the Expense:Write Offs account.

Hi List,

This is more a general accounting question than specifically a GnuCash
one, but thought there might be better help on the list for it.

Background:
I use GnuCash for business use, and track the purchase of inventory.
This goes into an Inventory Account
When sold, the sale gets recorded against the Income Sales, and the cost
of the goods gets recorded in COG's.

Issue:
I have some stock that is either obsolete, or otherwise no longer fit
for sale.  Just wondering what is the "correct" way to write this stock
off. (In case it matters, I am located in Australia).
My thoughts were:
- Have an Account called Write-offs to record the transfer of the dollar
amount from Inventory to Write-Offs.
- Also, record the cost of goods in the COG's account, just like it was
sold.  This is the main bit I am unsure of.

Any other suggestions, or am I looking at this completely wrong?

Jeff,
