Murugan,

Thanks for the suggestions.  I tried them both and didn't make any
progress.  Then I tried the obvious and opened the immediately preceding
.gnucash file.  This file worked fine.  All I have to do is re-enter the
entries I made, not a big project.

As for the issue at hand, my first guess is a hidden window has input
control, but your OS allows you to scroll other 'background' windows.
(I know MacOS and some Linux distributions can do this, not sure of
Windows)

How to discover if another GnuCash window/dialog has control, but is
simply overlaid by the main window, or is otherwise hidden, will
depend on your OS and setup. Another possibility, is if you are using
multi-monitor setup, the other window could be on another monitor, or
*think* it is on another monitor that isn't on/connected.

Of course, all of the above is just a guess. We need more info.

Re: [GNC] Will GNU CASH work on a Chromebook

2023-08-11 Thread Abe Sternberg
I run Gnucash on my Chromebook using Linux when I am traveling and it is a
real pain. For me, there are two challenges. The first is that if you are
not skilled in Linux it is a constant effort to keep the Linux apps updated.

Next, the Linux side is slow and uses a lot of system resources.
Chromebooks are not designed to run apps.

Now, the biggest headache. Gnucash needs it's data file to be local, so I
have to download the data to my Chromebook, then upload it to my computer
when I return home.

In sum, running Gnucash solely on a Chromebook can be done, while a second
instance of Gnucash on a Chromebook should only be done if absolutely
necessary. Of course, this is just my opinion.

I think you mean you _credit_ the checking account (which does indeed
reduce it) and _debit_ the clothes account (which does indeed increase
it). Your checking account is an asset, and your clothing is an expense
(assuming you're not the business of selling clothes).

Bookkeeping should not scare you. But as with learning anything new,
there's always a certain amount of memorization. Here it is:

1. ASSETS and EXPENSES: a debit increases them, a credit decreases them.
2. LIABILITIES, EQUITY, and INCOME: a debit decreases them, a credit
increases them.
3. The total of all debits in the books must equal the total of all
credits. The way you accomplish this is by ensuring that total debits
always equal total credits in each transaction.
4. (implied by 1 and 3):
ASSETS + EXPENSES = LIABILITIES + EQUITY + INCOME.
People have their favorite versions of this equation, but any valid
version can be transformed to any other, simply by moving one or more
items to the opposite side of the equation and changing their sign. Thus:
ASSETS = LIABILITIES + EQUITY + (INCOME = EXPENSE)
ASSETS - LIABILITIES - EQUITY - INCOME + EXPENSE = 0
etc.

Credit-card accounts and checking or savings accounts can be problematic
until you get used to them, because the bank's vocabulary is exactly
opposite to yours.

When you make a purchase with a credit card, your account is charged
(debited) on the bank's books, but you have increased your liability, so
you post a credit to your credit-card account on your books.

When you make a payment to your credit-card account from your checking
account, on your books that is a debit to your credit card (reducing
your liability) and a credit to your checking account (reducing an
asset). On the bank's books, it's exactly opposite.

My suggestion is, get BOOKKEEPING FOR DUMMIES or a similar book from the
library and read through it, pausing as need be to work through the
examples. (The "Dummies" label is quite insulting, but in my experience
the books themselves have been well done.)

Just think of double entry as when you are spending, the money comes
from some account and is spent on something (expense account).  When
you are receiving money, it comes from somewhere Income, donation,
etc. and gets put into some asset account, savings, building fund,
cash on hand.  There are two items for every expanse or receipt.

[GNC] Creating/Modifying a Budget Report

2022-10-10 Thread Abe Sternberg
I have been using GnuCash for about a year and am not a very
sophisticated user.  I am the treasurer for a very small non-profit, and
the "standard family bank account" approach has worked just fine.  Now,
I find that I would like to add keeping our budget performance on GnuCash.

I have set up the budget, which is working fine, the challenge is that
the included budget reports are inadequate, and I would like to change
them or create my own.  I spent all of yesterday wondering around
GnuCash on the I-net and only found references to programming my reports
in either Scheme, eguile, or guile.  All the preceding are Linux based
languages and not Windows.  I am not a programmer, and all the
descriptions I read just boggled my mind.

Can anyone out there shed some light on this, all I want to do is a
report modification which should be a built-in for GnuCash?

Thanks,
Abe

Re: [GNC] GnuCash Windows Bundle 4.11-1 Released

2022-07-03 Thread Abe Sternberg
I'd like to take this discussion in a slightly different direction if
permitted.

I have updated my Windows version without a problem however, I also run
GnuCash, v 4.8, on my Chromebook, for travel, and can't figure out how to
upgrade
it to version 4.11. I used Flathub for the original install.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas?

Much appreciated,
Abe

Re: [GNC] Could Not Obtain Lock

2022-06-26 Thread Abe Sternberg
I am using Windows 11. I try to close GnuCash properly, though there have
been times when I may not have. Also, I have had some Windows updates
while GnuCash was left open. I will look for the update and advise if the
error continues.

Thanks,
Abe

I get this message every time I open GnuCash. It doesn't seem to cause any
damage but is an annoyance. Does anyone know what causes this and how to
correct it?
