Re: [GNC] reports

2024-03-02 Thread Dennis Powless
Thanks for all the help. Adrien, you are correct I should have been more
specific. The transaction report worked best for what I needed.
Interestingly, the file, export, export to csv output was each split as
a row of data (too much info for what I needed). Not what I was looking
for, the report worked quite well for what I needed.

Thanks for your help.

I'm using excel to budget. I'm looking for the best report to export data
to excel that will show all transactions from my checking accounts. Which
report is the best for this? I'm using windows and the latest version of

Re: [GNC] Budget car payment

2024-01-13 Thread Dennis Powless
I realize that Gnucash is not a budgeting tool and I don't expect it to
provide the functionality that one can get from excel or open office. So,
I think I will just export the data to excel and do the budget/dashboard
from there. I can get what I need from the reports quite easily in gnucash.

[GNC] Budget car payment

2024-01-10 Thread Dennis Powless
I'm trying to create a budget and am having some issues with setting it up.
I have a liability for car loan and expense for interest for that loan.

I pay out of the checking account, say 500.
I split to the Liability loan 200 and expense interest 300.

In a spreadsheet I would budget out 500 for the car payment. However,
Gnucash is not set up this way (or I have it wrong).

The liability payment is a negative entry in the budget and the expense is
a positive value.
The same in the "budget report" created.

The help docs are not very helpful, nor are internet searches. Most in the
end, state to use a separate spreadsheet for budgeting.
Which I have been doing for many years, but figured I'd give it another try
as it's been about 9 years.

Re: [GNC] Decimal places in shares column

2020-12-19 Thread Dennis Powless
I figured it out

Under: Right click on account name: Edit Account
Under Smallest fraction: I changed it to: Use Commodity Value

I had this set to 1/100, (and tried 1/1000 and 1/1 with no change).

Changing to the Use Commodity Value did the trick.

Just a thought, have you tried downloading the OFX or (Money/quicken)

Re: [GNC] Migration

2019-07-31 Thread Dennis Powless
I can say the migration process wasn't easy, but wasn't too hard. I was
able to do it and got it up and running with all my old quicken data. I
can't remember the number of years of quicken data, maybe 5-10 years or
more. I've probably been with gnucash for about 10 years maybe.

After all is said and done, I'd NEVER go back to quicken. Gnucash has done
everything I need (I don't have complicated stocks or investments). I only
use it for my personal finances, not a business, so can't comment on that.

I'm not familiar with MYM12, so don't know about that migration.

Gnucash is a great program and open source, the devs work very hard on
keeping it up to date and are making improvements all the time.

Re: [GNC] Uninstall GC

2019-05-03 Thread Dennis Powless
Sorry about the mess. It finally worked. I was able to delete what I
needed. Thanks for all your help.

I then installed 3.5 from the repos on 19.04 (thought it was going to be
3.4) NICE surprise, indeed.

Version: 3.5
Build ID: 3.5+(2019-03-30)
Finance::Quote: 1.47

I like having the newer version of GC, but the LTS only has the older
versions of GC, so I upgraded to 19.04 and then GC too.

Thanks,

Dennis

I was able to run make uninstall on the Applications directory.

The terminal completed the task.

However, there seems to be still files hanging around.

Re: [GNC] Uninstall GC

2019-05-03 Thread Dennis Powless
This is the begging of the entire terminal on the build.

dennis@dennis-HP-Pavilion-Laptop-15-cc0xx:~$ cd /home/dennis/Applications

dennis@dennis-HP-Pavilion-Laptop-15-cc0xx:~/Applications$ mkdir
build-gnucash-3.1

dennis@dennis-HP-Pavilion-Laptop-15-cc0xx:~/Applications$ ls

build-gnucash-3.1 gnucash-3.1

dennis@dennis-HP-Pavilion-Laptop-15-cc0xx:~/Applications$ cmake
-DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/home/dennis/.local/home/dennis/Applications/gnucash-3.1

CMake Error: The source directory "/home/dennis/Applications" does not
appear to contain CMakeLists.txt.

Specify --help for usage, or press the help button on the CMake GUI.

Eventually, I was able to build GC I was VERY confused on the cmake
command and went off of suggestions from this list back then.

[GNC] Uninstall GC

2019-05-02 Thread Dennis Powless
I've got GC 3.1 installed on my laptop running Ubuntu 19.04. Built from
source.

This was the command I ran to install GC back then.

cmake -DWITH_AQBANKING=OFF -D CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/home/dennis/.local
/home/dennis/Applications/gnucash-3.1

So, my build directory is Applications/gnucash-3.1 ??? right.

I then did this

dennis@dennisLaptop1:~/Applications/gnucash-3.1$ make uninstall
make: *** No rule to make target 'uninstall'. Stop.

This was the output.

Re: [GNC] GC won't load on Ubuntu 19.04

2019-05-02 Thread Dennis Powless
So, just to be clear I wasn't trying to build GC, just run it and after an
upgraded ubuntu. From what I can tell, I'll need to uninstall GC and then
reinstall it.

I'll try to fully uninstall GC and then install GC. I'd like to have v
3.5, but I've been having issues with the removal of GC after a build.

I'm surprised that I didn't have more. I don't see any other directories.

gnc-fq-dump gnc-fq-update gnucash-valgrind

This is the contents of that directory.

If you only need a simple “check” register to track balances on accounts, there
are numerous free apps for this on iPhone and Android platforms. Yes, a simple
spreadsheet with a few columns could do the trick too(libreOffice is free
and open source). Date, transaction name, debit, credit, total etc.

Gnucash is more of the whole package, ie quicken, msmoney, or others like it.

Re: [GNC] Uninstall GC

2019-03-10 Thread Dennis Powless
These are the commands I ran to install gnucash.

cmake -DWITH_AQBANKING=OFF -D CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/home/dennis/.local
/home/dennis/Applications/gnucash-3.1

cmake

cmake -D CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=$HOME/.local ../gnucash-3.

This is where gnucash is located.
dennis@dennis-XPS-8500:~$ whereis gnucash
gnucash: /home/dennis/.local/bin/gnucash

I tried the steps in the article.
dennis@dennis-XPS-8500:~/Applications/build-gnucash-3.1$ sudo make uninstall
make: /usr/bin/cmake: Command not found
Makefile:3688: recipe for target 'cmake_check_build_system' failed

[GNC] Checking for dependencies

2019-03-07 Thread Dennis Powless
I have GC 3.1 installed on 18.04 LTS, want to upgrade to 3.4.

I was trying to see if any dependencies have changed so I went to the
page here and typed this in terminal.

You can check whether the required libraries and/or headers are already
installed by listing the installed packages. Run:

dpkg -l | grep

dpkg -l | grep gnucash-3.4

nothing happened, so, do I assume I have the correct dependencies? I
see a chart that mentions the dependencies for 3.1, not 3.4.

Re: [GNC] GNUCash becoming unusable ..v3.4

2019-02-01 Thread Dennis Powless
I don’t use the business features, just my home finances. GC is absolutely
wonderful, and open source and free. Is it perfect, nope, but for what I need
it’s perfect! There are some areas that need work, some added features etc

The developers do an excellent job of maintaining and moving the project
forward.

I left Quicken many, many years ago, never went back! I used quicken in the
early 90’s.

Give it a try!

[GNC] scroll not working

2018-10-02 Thread Dennis Powless
I haven't updated to 3.3 yet, still on 3.1 on ubuntu

While in a register, I noticed that trying to scroll up to past
entries using the scroll bar on the right does not work. I'm able to
scroll by moving the bar, but when released it snaps back to the
bottom. When I hover on the scroll bar area the mouse and right 4 or
5 columns flicker back and forth. With a transaction selected at the
bottom I can use the up/down arrows to navigate to a previous
transaction (however, going back to a previous year of transactions to
review something is time consuming.)

Is anyone else able to replicate this?

I can raise a bug if warranted.

Are you doing a scheduled transaction? Or, a transaction IN your register? Ie
in the bank register?

A scheduled transaction in the schedule transaction register should not show up

I was able to get 2/3 by doing them one by one, at the moment I can't
recall which one I couldn't get.

However, I was able to build GC and import OFX files.

I had same issue, also I don’t use AQ banking. I set the parameter to turn off

Re: [GNC] USING THE SAME GNUCASH FILE ON BOTH LINUX AND WINDOWS COMPUTERS

2018-06-05 Thread Dennis Powless
You could use a cloud based storage service, with all computers linked, such as
Dropbox.

You can have GC on as many computers as you see fit, each using the same GC
data file.

That way you’re not depending on a usb drive that could get misplaced etc

Re: [GNC] feature request, select all on reconcille

2018-05-19 Thread Dennis Powless
I've looked over window-reconcile.c and see the section on the menus.

Odd question, how do I actually learn how to do this. I've read up on gtk,
glade and see in the code where the menu items are coded.

Do I edit the actual file via gedit (geany) or do I use glade? I'm sure I
can learn the language to edit the file, but is there another easier way,
seems glade would be this?

Do you think the 'select all' should be a menu item in a drop down (say the
reconcile top level menu?) or on the menu bar as a stand alone button?

Maybe point me in the correct location to discuss this? I know it's a
steep learning curve, but I do have some experience with doing code, just
not this language.

I want to help out with this project and feel I can do some things to help
out once I figure some of it out.

[GNC] feature request, select all on reconcille

2018-05-18 Thread Dennis Powless
I would like to suggest a feature request. I would be willing to learn how
to do it if someone could point me in the right direction on how to
accomplish this. Would love to learn how to work with GN. I'll give it a
go.

Would love to have a select all option for the account reconcile. I have
to un-click all the entries before I reconcile. Have the button I can
click would help a lot.

Re: [GNC] Need User friendly guide to importing qfx file

2018-05-17 Thread Dennis Powless
Is qfx the only output/export you get from your bank? If you can try ofx
or try to do the export again, change the parameters on the export ie dates.
Make sure you’re in the account you’re importing to, ie that register is open.

Re: [GNC] new v3.0 install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

2018-05-14 Thread Dennis Powless
Question.
I used this.

cmake -DWITH_AQBANKING=OFF -D CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/home/dennis/.local
 /home/dennis/Applications/gnucash-3.1

The portion:

PREFIX=/home/dennis/.local

is this the same as:

PREFIX=$HOME/.local

And this:

/home/dennis/Applications/gnucash-3.1

the same as

../gnucash-3.1

I'm assuming the later one is the same, just checking.

BTW, was able to successfully build on Ubuntu 16.04LTS

Thanks,

D

Re: [GNC] Investment price display

2018-05-13 Thread Dennis Powless
Ok, will do.

BTW, do I do the same procedure to uninstall Gnucash per my other recent
thread? Then install the maint release?

I assume it's 'safer' to always uninstall and do clean install vs over
install new releases.

Re: [GNC] new v3.0 install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

2018-05-12 Thread Dennis Powless
David
One thing I noticed in the directions was the need for swig2.0, this was
not available from apt while I was compiling on 18.04 and I had to search
and find the newer version. While I was getting the dependencies while
running 16.04 I was able to get swig2.0 from apt.

So, may have to note that in the Ubuntu 18.04LTS build directions.

Thanks for the help.

[GNC] Investment price display

2018-05-12 Thread Dennis Powless
I'm running Gnucash 3.1 on Ubuntu 18.04LTS

I've noticed that the price in my investment register for my 403b shows the
price as a symbol such as 15 + 590/5893 when clicked it shows the
actual price as 15.100119. Another line is -2705/62981 and the price
is 15.429892.

Another item I've noticed was in the reconcile navigator, the columns are
not date sorted and don't seem to always have any pattern to them.

Thanks,

Dennis

Yes, I ran the autoremove

I then tried the rm commands and it seems the directories are already gone
after the autoremove.

wheris gnucash returned emtpy.

I guess I can run

sudo dpkg remove --purge gnucash

Right?

Or, should I manually remove with

sudo rm -irv /usr/include/gnucash
sudo rm -irv /usr/share/gnucash

I read up on uninstalling programs and about the - -purge command but didn’t
know how to combine it with the dbkg command.

To be honest, I don’t remember how I installed it gnucash on that machine.

2018-05-10 Thread Dennis Powless
I was able to use the remove feature in Ubuntu Software. however after
I ran that, I did the whereis gnucash and this is the output.

dennis@dennis-XPS-8500:~$ whereis gnucash
gnucash: /etc/gnucash /usr/include/gnucash /usr/share/gnucash

I then did
sudo apt-get remove gnucash

repeated whereis gnucash with same output.

I don't have anything /gnucash in the lib directory

Here is the output of the lib directory

dennis@dennis-XPS-8500:/lib$ ls

I tried the dpkg optrion also

dennis@dennis-XPS-8500:~$ sudo dpkg -r gnucash
dpkg: warning: ignoring request to remove gnucash, only the config
files of which are on the system; use --purge to remove them too

Thanks for the help.

BTW, I can't find gnucash in unity.

Re: [GNC] new v3.0 install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

2018-05-07 Thread Dennis Powless
I have no idea

If I install gnucash from the official repositories ie apt get install gnucash,
would a database be included in that installation?

It seemed in order to do the build I needed a database backend. So I chose that
one.

Otherwise from just a general user I don’t use a database with gnucash however
if there is a database running on the backend that I don’t specifically
interact with then I’m not sure which to use.

Certainly, the build instructions stated to choose one of the three, if there
is a big issue with choosing the wrong one or the right one maybe that should
be specified in those directions?

So, should I convert it to xml?

Again, I thank you guys for all the help, very much appreciated!!!

Ok, so I re-read the instruction from David

I followed the directions from this page
https://tutorialforlinux.com/2018/03/13/how-to-create-menu-launcher-ubuntu-18-04-bionic-lts/

And was able to get a menu item.

I was able to run Gnucash 3.1

It opened my file, seems to be working fine!!!

Thank you ALL for the help!!!

I used the MySQL database, not sure if that was right or not. No, idea
what I used on the previous install.

Re: [GNC] new v3.0 install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

2018-05-07 Thread Dennis Powless
I noticed that also, I was able to install those. except the OFX files,
libofx6, libofx4. I was able to install libofx-dev however.

cmake -DWITH_AQBANKING=OFF -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/home/dennis/.local
/home/dennis/Applications/gnucash-3.1

It ran

Then I did the make then make install.

No errors

Now what do I do.

I don't see it on the list of applications, terminal says I need to install
gnucash

I've installed all the dependencies, how do I get the required files to the

just find this file and move it there?

Per the instructions on the https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/CMake_Addressing
page I see that I should make have the cmake build directory IN the gnucash
directory? Right?

I don't need to keep the build applications after install.

To be honest, the literature is so confusing, it seems I'm reading several
different methods to do this.

location of my extracted file:
/home/dennis/Applications/gnucash-3.1

Almost there but not quite. In which directory in your home directory
/home/dennis have you extracted the gnucash-3.1 directory from the tarball
gnucash-3.1.tar.bz2 which you downloaded. Can you tell me the full path to
that directory and the full path to the build-cmake directory you have
created?

I was told to extract it to the Applications folder, certainly, I can move
that to the home folder. I was never told or read to specify a location for
the build-cmake directory. I'm not real sure where to place that.

Yes that path to the tarball file extracted is the Applications
 /home/dennis/Applications/gnucash-3.1
dennis@dennis:~/Applications$ ls
gnucash-3.1

Next chack that $HOME is defined, type echo $HOME into a shell/terminal. It
should return "/home/dennis".

yes it returned /home/dennis

With the "-DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=$HOME/.local/gnucash-3.1", the install
process will create the following directory structure:
/home/dennis/.local/gnucash-3.1/bin/gnucash
/home/dennis/.local/gnucash-3.1/etc/gnucash
/home/dennis/.local/gnucash-3.1/lib/gnucash
/home/dennis/.local/gnucash-3.1/share/gnucash

I was under the impression you had to identify the gnucash-3.1 in order for
the 'installer' to find it

It will also create those same four directories underneath a parent folder
for any other application you install with a similar prefix.

If you use the "-DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=$HOME/.local" as the install location
you will get the structure:
/home/dennis/.local/bin/gnucash
/home/dennis/.local/etc/gnucash
/home/dennis/.local/lib/gnucash
/home/dennis/.local/share/gnucash.

I certainly can use this one.

The latter is normally the preferred arrangement as when other applications
are installed their files will also go in the same
/home/dennis/.local/bin
/home/dennis/.local/etc
/home/dennis/.local/lib
home/dennis/.local/share
directories.

Both of the above will work as if you want to uninstall Gnucash you issue
"make unistall" command in the build-cmake directory you created and that
uses the contents of a file "install_manifest.txt" which records the
locations in which the files were installed. The latter is the structure
that is normally used by most Linux developers in the system directories
/usr, /usr/local and /opt, so mirroring that makes it a little easier in
translating instructions that are written with a different base location in
mind.

CMake and make are different tools. CMake is a precompiler which checks that
any dependent libraries and headr files are installed and available for the
build system to use. It also creates in the build-cmake directory a parallel
structure to the source directories containing files named Makefile which
are used separately by the make tool to compile the program. It also
contains bin, etc, lib and share directories into which the compiled sources
are placed ready for installation.

Entering the "make" command in the shell/terminal starts the process of
building these directories within the build-cmake file.

The final command "make install" ( or sudo make install if you are
installing to a system location) copies these directories to the install
location specified by the -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX switch applied to the cmake
command.

In the camke command as you had it specified
"cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=$HOME/.local/gnucash-3.1 make"

"make" is not a legitimate part of the cmake command. It is a separate
command which follows the cmake command, as explained above. Instead of
make, you need in that position in the cmake command a path reference to the
guncash-3.1 directory. You will remember I aksed you above to tell me the
locations of it in your home directory structure. It may be something like
/home/dennis/Applications/gnucash-3.1. In this case you would simply use the
string "/home/dennis/Applications/gnucash-3.1" (without the quotes) where
you have "make" in the cmake command. That is known as an absolute reference
to the location of the gnucash source directory. That is probably the
easiest to use as relative path from the build-cmake location to the
gnucash-3.1 location can be a little more difficult to work out. Assuming
the above location(substitute the correct path if not) the cmake command
would be:

cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/home/dennis/.local
/home/dennis/Applications/gnucash-3.1

I accidentally wrote the make at the end, I thought the make on the second
to last line was carried over from the previous

The problem with writing instructions is that you generally have to assume a
base level of knowledge on the part of the reader and unfortunately many of
us do not have the assumed base level when we first try something, myself
included. For the Gnucash User list, I think the assumed knowledge when it
comes to building the software itself would be something like (but it is not
clearly defined):

Knowledge of the operating system you are using;
Knowledge of its file system and structure;
Knowledge of navigating the above;
General familiararity with

So, in my case

home/dennis
as my is dennis, thusly home/dennis

I have this
$HOME/.local/

And this
$HOME/.local/share

So.. given the variables

I type >

mkdir build-cmake

cd build-cmake

cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=$HOME/.local/gnucash-3.1 make

make

sudo make install

I'll have to look at the directions again with the new information I have
now. Sometimes the directions make sense to the author, often background
prerequisites are needed to understand the directions.

2018-04-29 Thread Dennis Powless
Directions found here: https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/BuildUbuntu16.04

I'm not sure I follow the directions .
I navigate to the folder that contains gnucash-3.1 (which is in the
home/dennis/applications folder) by cd gnucash-3.1

I'm not sure about the line.. cmake -D CMAKE_INSTALL_PREPFIX do I
type all that in terminal or do I have to define it with the items in the
<>?

I don't follow the setAdd $HOME/.local/bin to $PATH

Thanks

Dennis

*Build Gnucash*

Best practice with Cmake requires use of a separate build folder. This may
be placed either inside the top level source folder, at the same level in
the parent folder for the top level source folder (gnucash-3.) or at any
other suitable location in your home directory. In the following:

   1. ** is either an absolute reference to the top level
gnucash-3. folder or a relative reference to it from the build folder
   where ever it is located;

   1. ** is the location to which you wish to install
gnucash on your system - common locations are:
  1. */usr/local* - this is commonly used for versions distributed with
linux distributions. You can use this if you don't use the
version from the
  distribution
  2. */opt* - this location is frequently used for user built software.
  3. *$HOME/.local* - in your home directory. SetAdd $HOME/.local/bin
  to $PATH.
   2. ** are one or more option choices separated by blanks
of the form -D where is one of build options
   <https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Gnucash_Build_Options>

cd gnucash-3.# is minor release number as above
mkdir build-cmake # folder to contain the buildcd build-cmake
cmake -D CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=
make
sudo make install

I was not able to install the swig2.0.. says it's not available and

I looked and found that swig2.0 is quite old and the newer version is 3.xxx

Do I need the newer version?

so, I DL the gnucase file then extract it do I need to create the
gnucase file?

I would then cd to the gnucase folder and run the second part of the

[GNC] new v3.0 install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

2018-04-28 Thread Dennis Powless
I just installed ubuntu 18.04 LTS on my dual boot machine. I want to
install v 3.0 and the new ubuntu only has 2.6.19 in the software center.
What is the best method to get v3.0 installed instead of the older version?

I see instructions here
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Building

And scrolled down I see these instructions. I'm assuming this will
work for 18.04LTS?
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus)

To build Gnucash 3.0 from source you need to install following packages:

sudo apt-get install cmake
sudo apt-get install libtool libltdl-dev
sudo apt-get install libglib2.0-dev
sudo apt-get install icu-devtools libicu-dev
sudo apt-get install libboost-all-dev
sudo apt-get install guile-2.0 guile-2.0-dev
sudo apt-get install swig2.0
sudo apt-get install libxml++2.6-dev
sudo apt-get install libxslt1-dev
sudo apt-get install xsltproc
sudo apt-get install libgtest-dev
sudo apt-get install google-mock
sudo apt-get install gtk+3.0
sudo apt-get install libgtk-3-dev
sudo apt-get install libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37
sudo apt-get install libwebkit2gtk-4.0-dev
sudo apt-get install libdbi-dev

mkdir build-cmakecd build-cmake
cmake -D CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/gnucash-cmake -D
WITH_AQBANKING=OFF -D WITH_OFX=OFF ../gnucash
make
sudo make install

I'm assuming I would then change the with the downloaded gnucash
file, right?

budget

2017-09-20 Thread Dennis Powless
I'm trying to wrap my head around the budget. I'm stuck on the carry over
each month. Does this value go in the 'budget available' the next month
AND the income to be spent the next month. Or, just in the income the next
month. I don't think gnucash accounts for any of this, was trying to work
it out on a spreadsheet and then once I figure it out, was going to see how
I can add it into the budget.

Both are Linux.

I'm not sure how to adjust that, will have to look into that.

saved report

2017-09-12 Thread Dennis Powless
Can I have a saved report 'saved' to my dropbox folder? I'm sure I can
move it there, but will gnucash look for it where it was last saved, or
will it only look in the normal location? I use multiple devices and need
it across those.

Tracking money moving out of checkbook

2017-09-11 Thread Dennis Powless
I'm trying to set up a budget and I need to track all the cash or money that
leaves the checking account in a report. I generally capture most of it will
expense accounts i.e. fuel dining general spending etc. what I seem to be
missing is all the other miscellaneous expenses, some transfers some odd
payments with different expense account attached to them.

I just found out that Capital One 360 no longer allows downloading of
transactions, it seems they cited security reasons.

Anyone else come across this with other banks?

Re: GNUCash as a maintenance project?

2017-07-27 Thread Dennis Powless
I think the reporting area has needs within gnucash, agree the request area is
always in need. Students could choose one that had the likelihood of completion
in the term allowed, etc...
