Re: [GNC] GnuCash with Interactive Brokers

2024-02-06 Thread km22 via gnucash-user
Understood. My point was more around whether there is a specific field in the
GnuCash securities setup which if matched with a specific field in the OFX xml
would result in the manual click-based becoming unnecessary?

I have dozens of bonds in the portfolio which are painful to manually match.
But they all have unique identifiers (CUSIPs and IBKR contract ids) which I
wish GnuCash could leverage in the matching stage. As of now it does not seem
to attempt any type of best guess when a new security is being imported from
the OFX.

Thanks,
Ken

Thanks. This can be a very tedious process, especially where there
might be dozens of securities to match one by one through a gui that
requires many clicks through different drop down lists.

It would be nice if there was a way to ensure much better matching
suggestions and then the user simply needs to click to accept (in most
   instances).

I’ll continue to experiment with importing IBKR ofx transactions into a
dummy test file. Thanks for the guidance so far.

Upon importing the OFX I am prompted to match the different bonds in the

This is quite a manual process having to match these manually

Re: [GNC] MacOS - could not complete critical test of libdbi

2022-08-02 Thread km22
I have downloaded DB Browser for Sqlite and have been trying different
combinations of opening the file and remounting the drive and/or rebooting the
system. As best as I can tell, after I open and close the file in Gnucash
once, I cannot then re-open it with Gnucash nor DBBrowser. It seems the first
time I open the file in Gnucash causes there to be a lock. I need to reboot
the machine to open it again. I’ll experiment more but any ideas are welcome.

Thanks,
Ken

[GNC] MacOS - could not complete critical test of libdbi

2022-08-02 Thread km22
Hi,

I am a new user of MacOS having recently bought a MacBook Air (after many years
of being a Gnucash user on Windows and Linux).

I was able to open my existing GnuCash file and add some transactions. But
after closing GnuCash and trying to re-open the file I get the following error:

GnuCash could not complete a critical test for the presence of a bug in the
"libdbi" library. This may be caused by a permissions misconfiguration of your
SQL database. Please see https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=645216 for
more information.

This looks like a very old bug that was resolved long ago. I see comment #19
suggests to copy the file but that did not work for me.

Any other advice I should consider?

My system is:
MacOS Monterey version 12.5.
GnuCash Version: 4.11, Build ID: 4.11+(2022-06-25)

Thanks,
Ken

Re: [GNC] Why does an Equity account have to be of Currency type?

2022-04-26 Thread km22

Hi Michael,

I agree - I could change the definition of $ for the purposes of the Robinson
Crusoe case. But let me ask the question a different way:

It seems that when trying to create an account of type Asset, Bank, Cash, Credit Card,
Liability, A/Receivable, A/Payable, Equity selecting the denominated
"Security/currency" only allows the user to select a Currency Type.
For account types Stock and Mutual Fund the "Security/currency" is only allowed
to be of a Non-Currency Type.

Why is that restriction necessary? Why can't you have a Bank account that is denominated
in silver taels*? Or a cash account denominated in "Disney Dollars"? Or
contribute Equity to a business in the form of yards of lumber?

Perhaps the answer is to simply use a "Stock" account type for my asset
examples? But there is no workaround for the equity example. And it seems like an
artificial limitation within the software - unless I am missing the reason this should
not be permitted (either from an software implementation or accounting perspective).

Thanks,
Ken

* Yes, I could use this ISO currency XAG but that price typically refers to
troy ounces and it might be that I want to mark the bid price of a silver
savings account at a premium or discount to the XAG price.

P.S. For some reason I am not receiving replies direct to my email so I am
copying and pasting from the GnuCash archive below.

It DOES allow this if you refuse to accept the magical meaning of "$"
(or any other symbol).

Declare a law on the island, "$ is the symbol for a silver coin".? The
fact that other people in other lands understand $ to stand for USD is
irrelevant to island life. You are acting as if it made a difference in
algebra whether you used "X"or "Y" to stand for an unknown variable.

But you are actually wanting something else. You are wanting in one set
of books more than one type of currency? at the same time. That gnucash
does not support, but that is more a limitation of accounting than of
gnucash. You CAN be accounting for more than one sort of :currency" at
the same time, but if not exchangeable, not in the same set of books <<
guncash will let you have any number of books >>

Your Gnucash usage question leads me to an accounting question. And I am
not an accountant, so my ignorance is likely vast. However?

Why should the accounts which track the physical assets be Equity
accounts?? Why not make them Asset accounts?

And then, David Cousens points out that what you need to track physical
assets is an inventory application, and GnuCash is not an inventory
application. How does that inform your use of GnuCash?

I want to represent the contributions to this trust in the form of

the contributions it only allows me to use "Currency" type assets.  I
don't understand why Gnucash would force this limitation.  Why
wouldn't a user be allowed to use any asset type they wish (stocks,
bitcoin, collectables) and not solely the ISO cash types?

2022-04-23 Thread km22

Hi,

I am starting a new Gnucash file for a simple "mock" trust.  The trust
holds physical assets (like stamps and coins and other collectibles).  I
want to represent the contributions to this trust in the form of these
assets.  However, when I try to create new Equity accounts for the
contributions it only allows me to use "Currency" type assets.  I don't
understand why Gnucash would force this limitation.  Why wouldn't a user
be allowed to use any asset type they wish (stocks, bitcoin,
collectables) and not solely the ISO cash types?

A screenshot of the issue is attached.

Thanks,

Ken

Re: [GNC] Why does the balance sheet report list positions with zero balances?

2022-04-04 Thread km22

Hi Derek,

Who are the experts in terms of the report coding/development?

Is it worth me trying to learn the report coding language and trying to
fix this myself? Or are there plans to migrate the report coding to a
different language (like SQL) in which case I should focus my efforts
elsewhere?

Alternatively, are GnuCash developers open to the idea of bounties to
encourage specific fixes/enhancements?

Thanks,

Ken

If you increase the level of subaccounts to 6 then that UST1 goes away.

I agree, this is probably a bug.  If you are rolling up subaccounts and
have "omit zero balance figures" selected, it should, well, omit
zero-balance figures, even if the rolled-up data contains

[GNC] Why does the balance sheet report list positions with zero balances?

2022-02-20 Thread km22

Hi,

Following up on a post made here:
https://money.stackexchange.com/questions/146779/gnucash-why-does-the-balance-sheet-report-list-positions-with-zero-balances

It reads: I am using GnuCash 4.8. I have opened the "Balance Sheet"
report and in Options deselected "Include accounts with zero total
balances". I have a brokerage account that hold some stocks currently
but has also held other stocks previously. The report is showing the
previous stocks with a zero position. The expected behavior would be for
the stocks with no holdings to not be displayed. Why is the report
showing stocks with zero holdings - and how can I fix this?

Attached is a simple example file.  In the screenshot below you can see
I have de-selected to "Include accounts with zero total balances" but
the example security "UST1" still appears in the balance sheet with zero
position size.  How do I get the balance sheet report to not show
securities with no position?

Thanks,

Ken

Re: [GNC] Convincing the balance sheet report to not show sold stocks...

2021-06-13 Thread km22
I am also having this issue. I have a brokerage account and for each stock
or bond I have set up a security and a "stock" account type for that
security. Many of the positions have long been closed and reflect a zero
balance in the register. However the "Balance Sheet" report is showing the
row with 0 position despite me deselecting the option "Include accounts with
zero total balances". I have chosen to select "Levels of subaccounts" to 4.
When I change this number to 6 (the maximum) then some of the accounts with
zero balances are no longer displayed (while some accounts more than 6
levels deep are still displayed with the zero balance). I therefore suspect
the issue has to do with how the report chooses to show accounts that are
deeper than the "Levels of subaccounts" selected. It would be nice if this
issue could be fixed in the report logic. (I have no idea how to try to do
this myself.)

Thanks,
Ken

Maybe you're not managing your entries so that there is no residual value
after all the shares are sold. The way I handle my capital gains/losses the
stock asset accounts have no residual value.

[GNC] Lost all settings after Flatpak update

2021-04-01 Thread km22

Hi,

I am a Debian user and install Gnucash using Flatpak. I think Flatpak is
setup to update automatically and the latest version of Gnucash seems to
have been installed as of March 28th.

When I started Gnucash I was presented with the typical popup tips and
dialogs to set up a new user file from scratch.  The system did not
remember any of my recently used files.  When I opened a recent gnucash
file it loaded but all my settings are gone. For instance my tabs are
all horizontal at the top of the screen rather than vertically to the left.

Do you know whether it is normal for Flatpak updates to case user
settings to be lost?  Is there a way to restore my previous settings?

Thanks,

Ken

As a follow up I have been running Gnucash 3.8 from the Debian testing

Question: Is it normal for gnucash to change its Python version (here to
version 3.8) within a maintenance update (here to gnucash version 3.10)?

I ask because I am hesitant to update my python version for fear of

in Python version is expected within the Gnucash version guidelines?

Re: [GNC] How to install Gnucash 3.8 on Debian 10 "buster"?

2020-03-08 Thread km22

Hi all,

Can anyone advise a very simple and safe way of install gnucash 3.8 in
Debian 10?

I've read posts like this:
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/107689/how-do-i-install-a-single-package-from-debian-testing-or-unstable-on-stable

But I am very reluctant to start messing with things like pinning or
temporarily enabling testing repo entirely for fear of breaking my system.

Is there a simple way to install just gnucash 3.8 and dependencies as a
one-off without making riskier changes to my system?

Thanks,

Ken

I tried to google the solution but what I found seemed to suggest a
lot of modifications to the sources file or introducing a pinning
concept.  I only want to install this one package (and the necessary
dependencies) from testing, ideally without messing with the /etc/ files.

Thanks,

Hi, Ken.

If you're comfortable with using the "testing" distribution, then GC
3.8 is already included, I am using it now.

If you prefer to continue using the "stable" distribution of Debian,
then you could try the "flatpak" version of GC, available here:

2020-03-02 Thread km22

P.S. I believe this is the bug in 3.4:
https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=797046

It is too bad there isn't a way for Debian's stable release to get bug
fixes so that the stable version in the repo remains the most reliable
version.  Seems the current model means that users are stuck with
whichever version is baked into the stable repo - warts and all.

Hi Tim,
I saw that filename in the wiki and tried it too but unfortunately it didn't
solve the issue of my custom report being added to the reports menu.
Thanks,

[GNC] Custom Reports in GnuCash 3.x on Windows

2018-10-21 Thread km22
Hi GnuCash Community,

Is the wiki on Custom Reports
(https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Custom_Reports) up-to-date for GnuCash
version 3.x series?
I tried making custom reports back in the 2.6 series and was able to
load my custom report saved to C:\Users\Ken\.gnucash.  I am revisiting
this now but cannot seem to get my report to load in the 3.x series.
Note: I have a config.user file with the line (load
(gnc-build-userdata-path "balsheet-egken.scm")) in it -- but I cannot
tell whether this file is being parsed and/or whether the report is
being loaded.
Please advise if anything has changed which makes the wiki no longer
relevant for the 3.x version or any tips on how I can debug this on Windows.

Thanks,
Ken

Gnucash 3.0 Microsoft Security Essentials Threat Detected

2018-04-04 Thread km22
Hi,

When I try to download Gnucash 3.0 I get a Microsoft Security Essentials
(MSE) threat detection which then deletes the file.

Screenshot:

Is there a way for the developers to have this file correctly
categorized/assessed by MSE?  It is worrying to see these pop-ups (and
probably the first time I have seen one and hence why I want to be very
careful.) What is the best way for a user to self-assess (i.e. confirm
the file is not a real threat) and proceed with the download/installation?

Thanks,

Ken

Reports with Month-end rather that Month-start

2017-09-05 Thread km22
Hi Gnucash community,

I want to start editing -- and eventually creating -- my own reports and
figures. I think one place for me to start learning is by playing with
some existing report settings -- such as the report date functionality.
Currently when I run a report with a "monthly" period I get the 1st day
of each month. How could I edit the report settings so I get the last
day of each month instead? (I am a Windows 7 user if that makes a
difference on where to find/edit files.)

Thanks,

Ken
