Re: [GNC] How to edit pop-up menu when typing transaction descriptions
I like the new method. But from the comments so far, I think there may be a couple option for an enhancement request. 1. Have a preference setting for account matching on transaction entry where the user could set: A. Contains; or, B. Leads with [C. Some may want Trails with] [[D. Perhaps a Match Case option]] 2. Another preference box for how many days back the user wants to match. Blank entry would be ALL. Zero would turn the matching off and XX days could be set to any number between 1 and some arbitrarily large number. But I think the useful ones would be 30, 60, 90, 180, 360, ALL Stephen M Butler, PMP, PSM stephen.m.butle...@gmail.com kg...@arrl.net 253-350-0166 --- GnuPG Fingerprint: 8A25 9726 D439 758D D846 E5D4 282A 5477 0385 81D8 On 6/6/23 07:32, David Carlson wrote: The problem with the solution that Adrien suggests is that there is a real possibility that the existing descriptions may be correct for existing transactions but inappropriate for new transactions. I hope we don't suffer from "pride of authorship". I've seen, read and experienced enough issues with the current process that it begs for the great coders of this terrific product to listen and improve on this process. Re: [GNC] How to edit pop-up menu when typing transaction descriptions
You or anyone for the case of existing vs. new. Honestly, I haven't had any issue with the feature at all and over 90% of my transactions are all touching the same source account so my list is potentially very large. I've only found a handful of variant spellings for payees, and corrected them right away. But apparently mileage varies as there is a non-zero contingent that is having problems. It *does* narrow down the list as you keep typing, perhaps folks are expecting a 'begins with' search and don't like to type more than 2 characters? I'd at least think a 'begins with' type search would be better, and more like how the previous auto-fill worked. I'm not opposed to an independent table of payees if that happens, but I can imagine it being a mess eventually, and then requests for copying lists to different account registers, or syncing them up, etc. Regards, Adrien On 6/6/23 10:53 AM, David Carlson wrote: Adrien, Who are you asking to provide an example? That feature is currently being updated and hopefully the new version ready for 5.2. In the new version it will be easier to cancel an unwanted match and also matching will prioritize recent transactions in a way more similar to how it was before in version 4. Re: [GNC] How to edit pop-up menu when typing transaction descriptions
I also like the idea of having a separate user-editable list/table for each account with Payees. When we input a transaction in with a payee not in the list it could ask us if we'd like to save it to the list and then, if yes, it could allow us to input other data such as the payee address. -- Eric Chapman GnuCash 4.13 on MacOS 13.1 Ventura running on 2018 Mac Mini (3.2 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7) On 6/6/23 12:12, Sherman Yoder wrote: Populating the list from a separate table would be a splendid idea, especially if the table could include the payee addresses so the address could print on the check without typing it in each time. Re: [GNC] How to edit pop-up menu when typing transaction descriptions
Frankly, I liked the way it worked in the earlier versions better. I did not have to do near as much typing to get the previous transaction I wanted. With the new version it is either the extra typing or scrolling through a long list, both of which are more time consuming. Part of the issue as I see it is that if you say type "am" in the description the list includes items that start with "am", but it also includes items that have "am" anywhere in the description. For instance, in my case the list includes entries like James, Family, Amazon, Amy, Hampton, and the list goes on. If it only should items that start with the entered letters it would be much better IMO. Re: [GNC] How to edit pop-up menu when typing transaction descriptions
This list is populated from the descriptions used in every transaction - in that register. If there are some entries that are errant (such as misspellings) or variant for the same entity (like a Payee, store name, etc.) the only way to correct these is to change those descriptions you don't want to those you do. The easiest way to do this would be to do a Find for the description you want to change, which will give you a list of transactions using it. Then, as you correct them one-by-one, they'll disappear from the search results and when the results register is empty, it will no longer appear in the drop down list in account registers which are affected by those transactions. [GNC] How to edit pop-up menu when typing transaction descriptions
Hello, When I type in the description of a transaction, a pop-up menu of previous entries appears. Is there a way to edit this menu? Sometimes it feels more cumbersome than helpful. Thanks so much!
