Re: [GNC] Request for two new features in GnuCash
That's just another workaround though. It creates multiple transactions when in the real world, there was only one event. The Process Payment feature doesn't really 'support' the desired function, but can still be used to accomplish the the task. I'm personally comfortable using the 'assign payment' function, but I understand why others may prefer or expect the Process Payment window to facilitate this in one go. It isn't an entirely unreasonable request, and it was presented as just that, a request. Regards, Adrien On 8/8/22 3:07 PM, R. Re: [GNC] Request for two new features in GnuCash
Eric, you didn't specify your OS. To clarify other replies: If you are on Mac, you can't open your data file by clicking on it. But you can create a simple Automator Workflow or AppleScript (or other script) to create a shortcut for each book. (or use the Terminal) That would be useful if you need two or more books open at the same time. If you just need to switch between them one-at-a-time, then use the quicklist at the bottom of the File menu as already mentioned. Re: [GNC] Request for two new features in GnuCash
I agree, this is already possible, but *not* using the 'Process Payment' feature as it is currently implemented. (that is, if one is paying on a Vendor invoice.) To accomplish this, you have to enter the payment with multiple source splits as Frank and others have noted, and AP as the debit split, then you have to 'assign as payment' on the AP split using the right-click context menu. (you might have to commit the transaction first, I don't recall if it works before commit.) This will then let you assign the multi-source payment to an Invoice. I see the feature request as changing the Process Payment dialog to support multiple sources. (A request I've seen here before) Regards, Adrien On 8/6/22 11:19 PM, Frank H. Thank you, Victor, I suffered from a lack of imagination, and that works perfectly! In the real-world bills (and invoices) are often paid in "installments", which this correctly processes. Eric AFAIK you can do this by making a payment of less than the due amount from one account and then makea second (or more) payment from another account to the same invoice - just cant do it in a single step. Thanks again to all who answered my two part question (next time I will make it two separate questions...) Frank, I already have that selected. The problem is not how transactions are entered or displayed. If I am entering a manual transaction, I can add any number of splits no problem. The issue is specifically with the Bill, or Invoice, "Process Payment" form which only allows one payment amount, and one transfer account (from the account tree). If I bypass the "Process Payment" by using manual transactions the Bill or Invoice is not closed. All the best, Eric Hammond Message: 6 Date: Sun, 7 Aug 2022 06:19:40 +0200 From: "Frank H. Buy there's another option, that I don't think I've seen posted yet. The OP is presumably using those "multiple file systems" to keep books on different entities. The user should give the files different names even though storing them in different locations. Then, if the user forgets to use the shortcuts you suggested, or just doesn't like the shortcut idea, they can simply open GnuCash from the regular program icon. GC will automatically open the last file the user was working on. If that's the "wrong" one, click File and the last N files worked on will appear in the menu; just select the appropriate one. Unlike most Windows programs, GC doesn't show you the location of each file, only its name. (At least that's true in the version I'm running.) That's why it's important to give the data files different names even if they're in different folders . In other words, what is the string of characters such that if you had that string on the command line and hit enter it would change to the right directory and invoke the program with the parameters wanted (the data file name one of these) b) Learn how to create an "object" on your desktop such that when you clicked on that object it would have the same effect as entering that string at the command line. When you can do those two things, you can have three such objects, one for each of your three sets of books. But please note that what you have learned is not specific to gnucash. .but you could do the same with a script on any platform. You could have as many as you like, not just two. I have been doing this for years and have never had a single problem from running this way. As in Moliere's /*The bourgeois Gentleman */"been speaking prose all my life and didn't know it". Since the person initially asking the question referred to having multiple shortcuts --- if you take a look at a shortcut (on Windows, right click and look at its properties) you will see that's what it is. Clicking on that shortcut is the equivalent of typing that string of characters at the command line and hitting enter. It's a script. Re: [GNC] Request for two new features in GnuCash
Eric, This is already possible, at least on Linux but I suspect also in Windows too ( this link may provide a way https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/add-an-app-to-run-automatically-at-startup-in-windows-10-150da165-dcd9-7230-517b-cf3c295d89dd ). On Linux Mint I can create multiple launchers for the GNuCash app and in the launcher, which executes a terminal command of the form "gnucash " without opening a terminal, I specify different filenames. The only difficucly is that the user and gnucash preferences will be the same with all data files, which may or may not be a problem. Re: [GNC] Request for two new features in GnuCash
Both of these are already possible. I maintain two GnuCash files, and most often run both of them at the same time with two different instances of GnuCash. You just have to tell it which file to open, either by using “File/Open” or with a command line argument. I do this on a Mac with command line arguments in an Alfred workflow but you could do the same with a script on any platform. You could have as many as you like, not just two. I have been doing this for years and have never had a single problem from running this way. As for multiple payment sources, just show the splits on the transaction and you can enter as many payment sources as you like for the transaction, each in a separate split entry. > On Aug 6, 2022, at 8:05 PM, Eric Hammond wrote: > > As I am getting more of my accounts completely into GnuCash I find the need > for two things: > The first is the ability to have two separate (at least) GnuCash file > systems: one for my business and one for personal. > My business is an LLC, and one legal requirement for that is there is no > co-mingling of money. > This gives me some protection from certain law suites and tax issues. > > I found an almost-work-around: two folders for Gnucash accessed with > shortcuts that specified the target folder. Re: [GNC] Request for two new features in GnuCash
Eric, Both of those situations should be easy to deal with. I have three Gnucash files, one personal and two for organizations. Gnucash opens with the last one I used. I can switch to one of the others from the items listed at the bottom of the File menu. All transactions can have any number of splits. Put the total cost of the oscilloscope on one side of a transaction, and have two lines for the other side, one for the cash incentive and another for the bank transfer. Maybe I am missing something. [GNC] Request for two new features in GnuCash
