Please file a bug report about the crashes and attach (don't paste!) a crash

Macs aren't my strength here, but every time you start GnuCash, if
>>> GnuCash
starts with a message saying it can't find a file, then once you get past
the screen that asks you if you want to remove it from the recent file
list, what you have is GnuCash running with a default empty file. I
wouldn't bother saving that. Instead, click the file menu and select
>>> open,
then point to the file you usually use. You may have to find that file,
using the Mac's file manager, then use GnuCash file>open to get to where
the file is and open it.

Re: [GNC] File not found, file in history

2019-06-08 Thread Centins@rq
I think this was the problem. I recently added my Desktop to iCloud and think
GNUCash wouldn’t accept the remote file.

Others mentioned backups, and I have, but none were opening and GNUCash kept
doing the blank book thing. Confusing and finding help was hard since I
couldn’t find any troubleshooting till this list.

I’ve solved the data file issue, thanks for the help, but GNUCash is still
crashing :|

Re: [GNC] File not found, file in history

2019-06-08 Thread Greg Feneis
Also, unless things have recently changed, on Macs, I recall there's a
curious behavior where clicking on the file you want to open doesn't
necessarily open that file. While it will start GnuCash, GnuCash only opens
the most recent file in the recent file list.

It happens, occasionally, that a Mac user will relocate their file and then
click on it to start using it. GnuCash then ( starts, tries to open the
most recent file in the recent file list, and can't find it because it was
moved, and ) claims the file the user just click on cannot be found.

The solution is the same as Adrian has already outlined. After GnuCash
starts and the errors have been dismissed, use file>open to navigate to and
open the correct file.

Kind regards, Greg Feneis

Re: [GNC] File not found, file in history

2019-06-08 Thread Adrien Monteleone
You *installed* Mailman?

That has nothing to do with accessing the mailing list.

Yes, the list is run/managed by the Mailman software, but as a list user, you
don’t need to install it. It runs on the mailing list server, not your local
machine.

If you actually and literally (both correct usage here) *installed* Mailman on
your computer, you can uninstall it, because you don’t need it.

To access the mailing list you just need to subscribe to the list with an
e-mail address. (just like you’d sign up for free junk on any website, except
in this case, you’re not signing up for junk, but help)

Adrien

Does that mean that you do not have a backup of your data file?
Remember that a hard disc or PC can go up in smoke (literally or
metaphorically) at any moment. Also there is always the possibility
of a bug or human error destroying the data. It is vital to take
regular backups of important data and keep occasional backups offsite
(in case of fire for example). Also regularly check that you backups
are restorable and do actually contain the data you think.

Thanks!

I think the panic of losing years of Dara blinded me to the simple idea that
that was just a blank and not some imagined lost key to a proprietary file
structure or something. Then down a rabbit hole trying to get Mailman installed
just to get some help.

Thanks for all the help!

Re: [GNC] File not found, file in history

2019-06-07 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Anytime you open GnuCash and it can’t open your data file it will open a
‘blank’ file because it has to have something open. That is what the Giuseppe
is seeing.

Giuseppe,

Your best bet is to follow previous advice.

Open GnuCash.

Disregard any messages and pay no notice to a blank file.

Click the File menu and choose the Open option.

Navigate to where your file is stored, and select it.

Then GnuCash will remember it after close and will re-open that last used file
next time.

Until and unless you get this far, I don’t know we can help much more.

If you have zero idea where your data file is stored, then we can help somewhat
in that regard, just let us know that is the problem.

Regards,

Adrien

Re: [GNC] File not found, file in history

2019-06-07 Thread Greg Feneis
You could also use your computer's file manager, EG Windows Explorer, to
find the file that GnuCash can't seem to find.

2019-06-07 Thread David Carlson
We need more information. What is your OS? Is GnuCash still running from
before?

What are your exact keystrokes and results, including warning texts and
button names?

Re: [GNC] File not found, file in history

2019-06-07 Thread Greg Feneis
You may have changed the file's location and GnuCash can no longer find it.
Try using the file>open menu items to navigate to the file location and
open it. After GnuCash opens it up,it will remember the new location and
open it automatically the next time you start it
