Re: [GNC] QIF Import Problem

2023-08-06 Thread Brenda Leudke
Hi David:

Thx for the reply.

The qif file is not coming from a financial institution. It is being created
from a 3rd party software. I was trying to determine if the file was created
incorrectly or if gnucash wasn’t reading it properly. That’s why I was editing
the file to see if I could “fix” the qif file to work right in gnucash.

Thank u for the link though because it helped me figure out the qif contents. I
made some changes to the pluses and minuses in the file and was able to get the
file to work right in gnucash.

So I have contacted the support person for this 3rd party software to let him
know that it appears to me that the qif file he is creating is not right.

Thx again for your help. It did point me in the right direction to resolve
this. I will wait for a reply from the guy who creates the qif file.

Brenda

Brenda,

It appears that you are editing the QIF file incorrectly. It should not need
to be edited at all if it is coming from a financial institution. I have not
used that format for income accounts so I cannot tell you exactly what is wrong
in your case but I think that one side should be appearing in an income
account, and the other side in a bank account. If you go to
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quicken_Interchange_Format you will see some
examples of how the format is used, but I think that it is not 100% correct.
Try to find a more authoritative source for exact usage.

Also, I see that you are in a jurisdiction that has HST, which we do not have
in the US. Others in this maillist may be able to better guide you.

Re: [GNC] QIF Import Problem

2023-08-05 Thread Brenda Leudke
Hi Gyle:

Thank u for the reply. I appreciate any help.

The program (Vacation Rent Pro - VRP) that I am using to generate the import
file only creates QIF files for Quicken or IIF files for Quickbooks. So I
have to use QIF files to import into gnucash.

Note: I use OFX files when downloading my banking transactions into gnucash
with no problem.

I have discussed this with the VRP support person and he says that the QIF
file works properly for Quicken. So he says it's a gnucash problem.

When I import the data (as shown by my example), the payment as well as the
income both enter as a debit. Then I have to manually change the income
entries to a credit.

I would be open to doing some type of conversion of the qif file before it
gets imported (to reduce the amount of manual effort). Not aware of a qif
conversion to ofx or qfx. But that would be a "good enough" workaround, if
there is no other solution.

Re: [GNC] QIF Import Problem

2019-08-07 Thread Christopher Lam
For completion, Colin sent me 2 QIF files from 2 different bank accounts.
Some lines indicated transfer from 1st QIF acct to 2nd QIF acct.

The solution is tedious. Importing QIF acct will require careful mapping of
QIF account/category, and when importing the 2nd QIF account, the importer
*will* *(very slowly)* attempt to find duplicates if the account names are
correctly chosen, and allow you to correctly match transfers. Matched
transfers are skipped thereby avoiding duplicates.

The good news is the QIF account/category -> GnuCash account mapping is
saved between imports.

Thus it'sa good idea to import accounts in short date periods; the mapping
will thus be preserved inbetween.

The next release *will* feature a much faster duplicate finder.

Re: [GNC] QIF Import Problem

Pleasant idea, but not feasible in my case...

I am exploring converting over because my Quicken is hitting unauthorized
memory access errors when I attempt to modify report filtering. I am
unsure just how much longer it will muddle through with any usefulness.

Re: [GNC] QIF Import Problem

2019-08-05 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
... And I have none of these problems with 13 years of history. No lags,
loading, while slow, has neither decreased nor increased over the years
with a growing file size. YMMV, but I've used both Mac versions, and now
the Windows version (currently 3.5).

I've said it before, but it bears repeating. When I imported many years
ago, I exported everything from Quicken into GnuCash in one grand pass.
GnuCash set up the accounts based on the transactions and picked up the
matching sides of transfers such as the OP mentioned.

I would suggest at most one or two years of history for your GnuCash file.
Then the one-account-at-a-time procedure is not so overwhelming.

I think, but I am not sure, that Quicken will continue to work off-line if
you want to review older history in the future.

Hi,

I'm trying to switch to GnuCash from Quicken 2016 and I'm running into a
problem where all transfers between accounts are duplicated after the QUF
import. I am aware that this is not a new problem and I have read meany
threads on here going back at least ten years about this.

I tried exporting just one month of my chequing and savings accounts to
separate QIF files and then importing them into GnuCash simultaneously and
separately. In each case, 100% of the time all transfers between the
accounts are duplicated in each account. Whatever is supposed to be
flagging these duplicates is not working. If I do them separately, I do
get the option to select the duplicates, but ultimately I want to import
the past 15 years of transaction level detail, and I am not willing to go
the manual route.

My question is: Is there any new information about a solution to this
problem?

Thanks,

Re: [GNC] QIF Import Problem

2019-08-04 Thread Christopher Lam
Hi I'm currently looking at the QIF importer and would be grateful for a
sample datafile that contains data between matching accounts. Would you
mind sending me a small QIF? eg. a couple days' worth of data.

Re: [GNC] QIF Import Problem

I would suggest that it would probably create a very ponderous data file to
cover 15 years' data. I have 10 years' history in my current file and I
regret putting so much into one file, as it generates lags of several
seconds for some very common operations, and minutes to open or close..
