More specifically, not just 'within the register' but it will only
search in splits tied to that register.

So if you have the Bank Account register open and you do a find, but
that info is not in a Bank Account split, but say an expense account
split, GnuCash will not return it in the results.

You want to search for "Value" when you're searching for a monetary
amount, as opposed to numbers within a text field.

Also make sure you press Ctrl+F while you're in the Accounts register.
If you're in any other register, GC will search only within that register.

Is there a way when using the search function to have the results of dollar

I personally think it would be easier to keep track of enhancement requests
via the bug tracking system. https://bugs.gnucash.org/

You can select "enhancement" under the "severity" option when creating a
"bug". Also it helps to start the description with "RFE:" which stands for
"request for enhancement" to make it easier to search or more obvious this
is not a "bug".

Because enhancements can take years to implement (if ever) due to time and
resource constraints, I feel we lose a lot of valuable feedback in terms of
use case and functionality when it is only discussed in the mailing list.
It doesn't mean it cannot be discussed here to try to get more users to
provide feedback, but then important points or conclusions should be posted
as comments in the bug database so that they can be referred to easily even
years later. I certainly try to do that with my own comments and see others
do as well.

As for the 2 ideas in this thread:
- the undo feature (beyond the cancel). There is already an RFE for this
here https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=509267 so it would be good to
review what's already there and put new ideas, which can be discussed there
or here in the mailing list
- the original search and replace. A quick search doesn't return anything.
There is a somewhat related one but it's not quite the same
https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=680764 So possibly creating a new
RFE there and try to get people to react to it by posting here on the
mailing list?

The way I do that is to exit without saving.
Then reopen.

However, I don't use autosave, and save after each "batch" of work
because I've been doing that since before autosave. So if I mess
something up I can sort that out, with some good idea of when I last
saved my data.

Re: [GNC] Search and Replace

2023-04-28 Thread David Carlson
Regarding search and replace, I wouldn't want to get too aggressive with
that in existing transactions, especially reconciled transactions. It
could easily overwrite intentional spelling choices. However, I would also
like to only have a limited selection of choices for new transaction s,
preferably correctly spelled, unless I use a lot acronyms meaningful to
only a very select audience.
Not knowing how to decide which suggestion s would be good, I don't see a
good way prevent bad choices from being included unless the user creates a
custom dictionary. That could get very cumbersome.

On the second idea, I would love to have an undo/redo feature similar to
the one in the office suites.

Re: [GNC] Search/report by description

2021-12-28 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Technically you can, *if* you don't 'accumulate splits' when posting.
Then those line items will show up in all affected registers and you can
use the Transaction Report's filtering options to get what you want. (or
do a Find and then an Account Report)

I wouldn't recommend un-posting and re-posting to expose historical
line-items, but if you must, be sure to do so in date order and after
each invoice, double check that payments are still properly applied.

Note, the line item data will not expose the quantities, so you'd have
to put that info in the line-item descriptions too. (and then have fun
doing math with it, but if you are methodical and think it through, some
fancy spreadsheet work could probably save the day.)

Adrien

Hi David-- You cannot, from the UI, explore the search criteria, however if
you launch with enhanced logging: "gnucash --log qof.query=debug --logto
stdout" then the search parameters will be shown on console. HTH

Re: [GNC] Search Results

2021-12-20 Thread David H
David,

Yes that's true, I've only got a date showing up on the left and the sort
order on the right so there looks to be plenty of space in the middle as I
always have Gnucash as big as my monitor allows :-)

An obvious place to display the search criteria might be in the status bar when
the Search tab is selected. Multiple criteria may cause some problems however

Re: [GNC] Search Results

2021-12-20 Thread David H
David,

Short answer I don't think you can unfortunately. As Find and Find Account
are on the Edit menu, probably more logical to keep it there if something
were implemented. You can, when the Search Results is the current tab, go
back in to Find and instead of a New search add to your existing Find by
selecting "Refine current search" so perhaps it would be nice if when you
selected "Refine current search" it re-displayed the search criteria in use
- no need for a menu item at all then. Even better if you could name
searches and it remembered previous searches and populated a dropdown list
with the search names giving you the ability to click on a search name and
have the details populated in the Search Criteria screen fields.

You may be better off using a saved report instead - that would show you
the search criteria in the report options allowing you to tweak things as
required ?

I did ask some time ago why gnucash doesn't remember previous searches to
allow you to re-run them by just clicking on the search entry as I was
searching in individual accounts repeatedly for the same target but then
Adrien put me on the straight and narrow by suggesting I use Find as
opposed to Find Account :-)

Cheers David H.

Re: [GNC] Search/report by description

2021-08-25 Thread david whiting
While you can't do this directly from gnucash, if you use the sqlite
backend (or other sql backend) you can write your own queries
fairly easily. For example, you could save your gnucash file as an sqlite
file and use sqlitebrowser to view it and write queries
https://sqlitebrowser.org/dl/ (I'm suggesting sqlitebrowser because it is
free and available for windows, mac and linux).

This query, for example, will find whatsits:

SELECT invoices.date_posted, invoices.id, invoices.notes,
description, quantity_num, quantity_denom, b_price_num, b_price_denom,
quantity_num / CAST(quantity_denom AS FLOAT) AS quantity,
b_price_num / CAST(b_price_denom AS FLOAT) AS price
FROM entries
LEFT JOIN invoices ON entries.bill = invoices.guid
WHERE description LIKE '%whatsits%'

You can limit the dates posted in WHERE clause. I haven't tried to link to
customers, but it should be possible.

From the Search Results window, choose Reports / Account Report.

It will generate a report showing all the searched for transactions,
with Debit and Credit totals at the end.

Chart of Accounts. I believe the default name for the tab is simply “Accounts”.
You can name it whatever you want though via, Actions > Rename Page.

Don’t forget to copy the list on all replies that way others can benefit from

Re: [GNC] Search within search not opening new tab

2019-10-23 Thread Steve Kelem

Good idea. Unfortunately, the mis-categorization was over a period of years, so
simple re-loading won't work. My question is about the Search Results tab being
re-used instead of opening a new tab.

I used Search to find all mentions of the checking account made from the

transactions.

If I then search within those results, the new search results /replace/ the Search Results tab instead of
opening a new Search Results tab. I've tried changing the "Type of search" to "New
search" and "Refine current search". But they both replace the Search Results tab.

Is there a way to force it to open a new Search Results tab? It's tedious
to have to select the search account every time...on the order of 30 seconds

I find searches tend to work best from the CoA tab. Often a register search
doesn’t turn up known transactions that match my criteria.

You can use more than one criteria in a search.

If you want to keep a more broad search result open while you conduct a more
narrow one, do the second search from the CoA tab again, *not* from the
previous search results tab. (which would replace and refine, as you have
discovered)

Note too, I just tested this on 3.7, so not sure how 3.4 performs there.

Re: [GNC] Search within search not opening new tab

I haven't tried this, but...

Perhaps in this situation, barring a restart, you could use the transaction
report, using the credit card as the source and the checking as a filter by
account. This could further be refined by description, or sorted in a way that
could ease the editing burden.

If you mean bulk editing, no it hasn't and it isn't likely to be until we've

If I search the entire book (search initiated from the accounts window),
I do see results. It's doubly strange that the search is different

Re: [GNC] search

2019-04-07 Thread John Ralls
Since it works when you search the whole book and fails when you search only
one account, I must ask if you put the note in the memo field of the split for
the account you're searching?

The list strips images, so information was lost.

I have an entry with a memo field containing the word (text string)
"=JUSTIFICATIF".

Of course.
Memo to self: Try harder next time

Edit->Find

This behaves slightly differently when started from the account hierarchy or
from an account register.

When started from the account hierarchy it will search all transactions and
splits in all accounts. When started from an account register it will only
search for splits (and their associated transaction info) in that account.

Apologies if this is brain-numbingly obvious, but I have tried looking
for the answer, honest!

How do I search for a particular item eg search all accounts for $4.35,
or transactions with 'Harrison' in it? Quicken had a very simple search
bar which worked very well. Is there a similar function in GNC?
