[Goanet] forces killed innocent civilians not foreign militants
Chittisinghpora controversy: Tests confirm forces killed civilians Press Trust of India Srinagar, July 16: The Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Kolkata, has established that five persons killed by security forces following the Chittisinghpora massacre of Sikhs in 2000 were all local civilians and not foreign militants as claimed by the forces. Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, who tabled the one-page CFSL report on Tuesday in the state Assembly, said, "It has been clearly established that the deceased were not foreign terrorists as claimed by the forces who led the operations, but they were innocent civilians." = Recommended Goan Sites in Cyberspace Goa-World at http://www.goa-world.net The Goan Forum is at http://www.colaco.net __ Do You Yahoo!? [Goanet] In response to Fred Noronha's : Portuguese laws, polygamy etc
From: Frederick Noronha <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Sat Jul 13, 2002 1:36 pm Subject: [Goanet] Portuguese laws, polygamy... and what the law actually states [My point is that the law allows for it under certain conditions; I didn't say I know or knew of anyone who took or plans to take advantage of the law (as far as I know, it is still not revoked). The law *did* permit "simultaneous polygamy" under the quaintly-named 'Usages and Customs of Gentile Hindus of Goa' -- see page 156 of 'Family Laws of Goa, Daman and Diu - Volume I'. Contrary to the widespread belief, the "uniform" family laws of Goa contain provisions which are surprisingly un-uniform. They not only have differing provisions (in some aspects) based on people's religion, but even based on their caste! It is another matter that these laws today have a strong lobby to support them on ideological grounds ('If Muslims can do without polygamy being allowed in Goa, why can't we enforce a similar law on them across India') or very strong economic grounds (some can pay lower taxes on the claim that the husband and wife have supposedly, or at least in theory, equal shares to the income and wealth). Check what Article 3 approved by Vsicount of S. Januario, Secretary of the State for Naval and Overseas Affairs assented on December 16, 1880: However, the marriage contracted by a male Gentile Hindu by simultaneous polygamy shall not produce civil effects, *except* in the following cases only: (i) Absolute absence of issue by the wife of the previous marriage until she attains the age of 25 years. (ii) Absolute absence of male issue, the previous wife having completed 30 years of age, and being of lower age, ten years having elapsed from the last pregnancy] === Dear Fred, May I suggest that the Cordigo Civil Portugues of the Portuguese Civil Code (PCC) was introduced in Goa in 1870 as a tacit acceptance to the prevailing situation of Polygamy which existed among the Muslims and Hindus in Old Goa & the Novas Conquistas WAY BEFORE the Portuguese Colonialists arrived in Goa? AND THAT your sentence [PANJIM, July 12: Decades back, it was grounds for legally permitting polygamy in colonial Goa] is actually misleading. Why...only'colonial' Goa? IF it was there BEFORE the Portuguese colonialists and continues (on the books) AFTER the Portuguese colonialists? Do read what YOU wrote in the following article [PORTUGAL HELPED PUSH GOA DOWN REFORM PATH, SAYS SCHOLAR By Frederick Noronha PANJIM: Portugal, inspite of getting a bad image as the colonial ruler, also undertook some welfare authorities in parts of the Konkan occupied by that country in past centuries. Historian Dr Fatima da Silva Gracias, in a research paper presented recently, says that these welfare activities were promoted through the State, the Church and social organisations too. ..Reforms were also implemented to DO AWAY WITH PRACTICES LIKE sati, child marriages, tonsuring of widows and POLYGAMY. Albuquerque is credited with ending sati -- buring in the pyre of the dead husband -- soon after his conquest of Goa. (CAPS are JC's)] == I submit further that IN an environment which paints everything Catholic and Portuguese as depraved and decadent, you could have worded your sentence differently. you further write: [On a related issue, in response to JC's criticism of the Manusmriti, it is perhaps rather easy to criticise someone else's religion... The fact is that almost all (all?) forms of religion tend to be, to some degree or the other, rather anti-woman, and even antiquated by today's standards.] I beg to seriously disagree with your above assertion. While I will normally criticise ANYBODY who discriminates on the basis of Caste, Religion or Ethnicity, my response to Subhash was MERELY to point out the contradictions in Manusmriti as far as the role of the woman was concerned. Nothing More..Nothing less! [Religion at various points of time has been manipulated to support not just the caste system, but also racism, slavery and colonialism.] NO question about that! [Maybe the biggest challenge before all of us is to begin by criticising the wrongs in the religion we ourselves belong to (a more diffficult task!), so that we overall work to a more humane face for the potent force called religion. Dear Subhash, Namaskar re: the following points in your postings on GoaNet SP1. [Along with modern medicines, it may help, if young couples make occasional trips to these peaceful places to find love and understanding towards each other. This situation is not restricted only to women in poorer segments of Indian society. SP2. [Manu Smruti says, "Daughter-in-law should be loved as she is Laxmi of your house. Mother is 100 times more influential in raising children than father, and father is ten times more influential than Guru or Teacher.] And yetthe same Manu Smriti says "Never trust a woman. Never sit alone with a woman even if it may be your mother, she may tempt you. Do not sit alone with your daughter, she may tempt you. Do not sit alone with your sister, she may tempt you." AND "a woman after marriage should be under control of her husband " BTW: Isn't this the same Manu who gave the world the horrible caste system? http://www.colaco.net/1/caste.htm SP3.[Some 30% scientists at NASA are Indians] which NASA are we talking about? [Goanet] VHP offers to reconvert Christians
Here is an interesting news item from the Press Trust of India.TGF comment at foot: [VHP offers to reconvert Christians Press Trust of India Ranchi, July 10 Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Tuesday said it would take back the Hindus who were converted to Christianity. "With all respect and humility, the Hindus who were converted to Christianity, will be taken back to our fold if approached," VHP's central secretary Mohan Joshi said here. Claiming that the Christian population had grown from 17 lakh to three crore since Independence, Joshi alleged that Christian missionaries were spreading their wings across the country. He also alleged that the missionaries had targeted Jharkhand tribals to convert them into Christianity.] Statistics is an intersting topic indeed Here are some more (incorporating some of Mr. Joshi's own figures) Total Population India 1947 : 347, 340, 000 i.e. 340 million 2001 : 1029, 991, 145i.e. 1030 million (1 billion) Christian Population 1947 : 2,240,000 i.e. 2 million 2001 : 23689796.335 i.e. 23 million This can be seen as a 10 fold increase or an increase of 21 million Hindu Population 1947 : 282,387,420 i.e. 282 million 2001 : 837,382,800 i.e. 837 million This can be seen as a 3.5 fold increase or an increase of 555 million Please note: BUDDHIST population is not discussed Politicians will use the figure anyway they wish. In other words, If zuze stood for elections in the Independent Republic of Chimbel an secured 5 votes out of a possible 10 in 1999 but received 25 votes out of a possible 11 in 2002. zuze could easily claim a la VHP's Joshi that he received a massive increase in support for his views. Tim D'Mello & George Pinto make some very interesting observations on the topic at hand. Tim wrote:[What George has quoted is what I was told -systematic eradication of the native population. This is one of the reasons that it is so popular with White South Africans fleeing South Africa - also nazi Germans fleeing post war Germany.] Population demographics is an intriguing topic. The present population of Goans in Goa is dwindling. * Are they being 'systematically eradicated'? * Are they being 'eradicated from the system'? * Are they migrating more than ever before? * Has the Goan death rate in Goa risen above the birth rate? * Are there more non-Goans coming into Goa? like every hour! I submit that we need to look at these factors. Similarly, in Argentina.. the various factors for the increased Mortality among AmerIndians after the arrival of Europeansand before...Arawaks vs Caribs... having been noted Has the total NUMBER of AmerIndians gone down( with the appropriate correction) in Argentinaor is it only the case that the Immigration from Switzerland, Germany, Israel, South Africa, Lebanon and Italyincreased... giving Argentina the demographic percentage of 97% Caucasians and 3% AmerIndians/ Meztizos. BTW: the % Population of AmerIndians in Guyana is similarly ~ 2%. But.the Population of (East) Indian migrants is close to 49% Did the immigrants from India 'systematically eradicate' the AmerIndians? Of course not! Some..nutcase & trigger happy moron might flip and let go the first strike. That will be the end. Pull back you foolsPull back. Don't sacrifice the nation for a tiny piece of real estate! TGF = India and Pakistan: Nowhere to Hide In nuclear attack, few would find shelter By Paul Watson and Tyler Marshall LOS ANGELES TIMES June 8, 2002 New Delhi - With India and Pakistan on the brink of war over Kashmir, their people face a frightening reality: If nuclear missiles ever rain down, there is nowhere to hide. Among the 1.2 billion people of the Asian subcontinent, the only people with any hope of finding shelter from a nuclear attack are top political and military leaders and, if regular rules apply, people with enough money to ease their way into a few protective bunkers run by the governments. India's capital, New Delhi, a prime target for what nuclear strategists call a "decapitation strike" by Pakistani missiles, has no air raid sirens, no public fallout shelters and no known evacuation plan for almost 13 million residents. Indian officials in local and national departments responsible for handling emergencies referred journalists from one office to another when asked about civil defense planning. Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, is said to have fallout shelters for the generals and politicians. In the past month, Pakistan's interior ministry has run drills for police, fire and hospital workers, but hasn't educated the public on how to increase their chances of surviving a nuclear attack. Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf have said repeatedly that they don't want a war, certainly not a nuclear one. But experts warn the two countries have slipped steadily closer to Armageddon since first testing nuclear weapons in 1998. "You can't really say that they're going to have a nuclear war, of course," said Achin Vanaik, an Indian scholar and political activist. "All you really can say is that the likelihood of a nuclear conflict in this part of the world is greater than anywhere else." Anti-nuclear campaigners such as Vanaik have long argued that civil defense is a waste of money, and that the only way to prevent mass death from nuclear war is to get rid of the weapons. India and Pakistan continue to build up their arsenals and test new missiles to deliver them farther and more accurately. But the countries' people haven't been told the most basic precautions such as how prevailing winds would carry the fallout plume or how iodine tablets would could help them survive radioactive poisoning. In 1999, New Delhi's government proposed a phased plan costing more than $240 million to handle the aftermath of a nuclear attack, which assumed the blast would create a "dead zone" with a radius of 14 to 30 miles. The plan included emergency medical bunkers, a disaster alert system, more than 200 protective suits for emergency workers and 750 decontamination and first aid kits, The Hindu newspaper reported. But there is no evidence that plan was ever implemented, Vanaik said. Indian hospitals are notoriously overcrowded and understaffed, and health care is worse in Pakistan. There is only one doctor for every 2,337 Indians, compared with one physician for every 406 Americans. According to a 1999 study on the likely effects of a nuclear attack on Bombay, India's largest city and commercial hub, the blast, fire and radioactive fallout from a 15 kiloton explosion would kill between 160,000 and 800,000 people in a population of more than 16 million and injure several hundred thousand more. "These estimates are conservative and there are a number of reasons to expect that the actual numbers would be much higher," wrote physicist M.V. Ramana in his report, "Bombing Bombay?" He added that the estimates don't include long-term effects such as cancer and birth defects. = Recommended Goan Sites in Cyberspace Goa-World at http://www.goa-world.net The Goan Forum is at http://www.colaco.net __ Do You Yahoo!? [Goanet] My dear Uly.........please!
from: jose colaco to ulysses menezes nassau, June 4, 2002 My dear Uly, Over the past several days, I have observed the mail going through. I understand the hurt and the resultant unhappiness. Even so, I have advised all of us, albeit privately, to (please) exercise extreme caution in our actions. Pardon me for writing this publicly. I read your post of today and I request all involved to PLEASE drop the matter. PLEASE! I have a fair idea where this matter is heading. Please Remember that we are all Goans and all human too! Let's leave this now & move ahead. Allow me to state this, once & I will not debate this. It is being posted here, only for the record. Herman Carneiro is the father of this baby called GoaNet. In 1998, as a result of family neglect and the ensuing Malnutrition, GoaNet went into a ~ 9 month period of Coma. Rene Barreto, the good Goaphilus and filius from London requested that we develop a mini-list to keep the links between Goans, open. This is how Goa Link was born. With Marlon Menezes' technical help, GoaLink became a d-list. At the same time, Ulysses was keeping the lines of Goan communication open with GoaMania. JC requested Uly to join forces with Rene & GoaLink, and he did. GoaLink kept the Goan conversation going for 9 months when Goalink was merged with Goanet. After having given Respiratory support and Blood Transfusion while GoaNet stayed in Intensive Care, GoaLink and its founders quietly faded into the background. Their goal having been achieved. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goanet/message/2 So Uly, you understand that Rene and You are the Godparents of this child. You looked after the child when the parents were 'lost'. As Godparents, your job is to continue supporting GoaNet. On a personal note, I have learnt a lot from GoaNet. Ema and I have made a lot of friends courtesy GoaNet and we would like to thank all those who volunteer to keep the conversation going. Let's hold hands and assist each other, jc PS: While JC will not debate this issue any further, do not hesitate to request JC for any material to substantiate the above. Have all possible GoaLink- GoaNet, / GI d-list/ The Goan Forum d-list correspondence on zip and will research it, if required. Goa Resumes it's Horse Trading Practices ! TGF: November 7, 2000 (any relevance to events of June 2002?) About 500 years ago, Goa the main transshipment port for pilgrims to Mecca and for Arabian horses to the subcontinent. In the early 1980s, the horse traders reappeared. Dear friends on GoaNet and TGF, We all know Alfredo de Mello. He has been a regular contributor to GoaNet and The Goan Forum. Of late, he has been "under the weather" and awfully quiet. At TGF we have tried to retrieve from his vast recollection, as much knowledge we could. We are not even half there. [Goanet] Last night.... as it rained !......Fri Jun 2, 2000
Dear all, this is a post from 2 years ago. I had written it for The Goan Forum d-list. Wonder if it makes any sense today Your input is invited. good wishes to all jc for TGF = Election Day in Goa is nearing Get your Garlands from EXPRESSIONS - GOA No! NO!Garland NOT your favourite Hypocritus Corruptus Politicus Not at all But Rather...Garland your favourite person en casa(:-) = From: Jose Colaco <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> TGF d-list : Date: Fri Jun 2, 2000 3:22 pm Subject: Last night as it rained ! It was past 1am in the morning. I had just got in from seeing a sick little asthmatic child in the hospital. It was pretty late to get home but not unusual. One needs a little time to unwind before one falls asleep. So, I sat in front of this Dell and stared vacantly at the articles from the Goan Newspapers. It was disheartening to read the articles. Perhaps, life in Goa is a wee bit better than this. Perhaps, the newspapers give us the yellow side of life. Perhaps, I should buy some rosy tint for my specs! I thought. At that moment, it started pouring. I went over to the window to have a look. It's a fourth floor apartment. In the faintness of the beachside lights one could see that the seawaves were surfing up. It was getting rough. The rain got heavier and the visibility poorer. The crashing sound of the rain reminded me of the monsoons in Goa. My thoughts went over to Goa and to good people like Aires, Fred, M&M, Tony, Joel, Emiliano, Alexyz, Bosco, RP and my own family members. I wondered how they were doing. Well..I hoped. Did Goans have to travel so far away from home to make a living? Why has Goa become so corrupt and dirty? Why are we so callous about the way we drive, and the way we treat the sick and elderly? Why are Goan Catholics helping to prolong the racist Caste System. Why are Goans finding it so difficult to find good governance? The story I was reading in the Navhind, last, was the unbelieveable Cricket Scam. Oh what a sham ! Is there nothing sacred anymore. besides money? Is Money ALL that matters? And what greed? about 100,000 US dollars per player to FIX a one-day match ? And what about our little Goa? The Portuguese cannot come back - never mind the daydreamers and the saudade for those days of classy functions and cleanliness. Even Governor's rule ( probably the only clean spot in the past 38 years ) cannot come as a long term solution. Who does one turn to? The Congress?, the MGP?, the BJP?, the NCP? They have ALL failed us Goans over and over and over again. It is probably a good idea for us Goans to leave the politicians to their politricks, DO NOT VOTE AT ALL, accept our fate at the mercy of the all-powerful and set up SELF-HELP programs for our people. Never mind the odds...but that might be the way forward. It was close to 3am. The area surrounding the apartment complex was soaking wet. It was wet too. by the window I was standing at. Are Goans Liberated? February 22, 2002 On December 19, 1961, celebrated in Goa as Liberation Day, huge crowds of Goans came out of their houses. Since then on December 19 of every year, flowery speeches are made by politicians, a parade is held and many celebratory functions are held all over the State. But are Goans truly liberated? 2. THE BIG LET DOWN - a TGF editorial June 18, 2001 While there was general relief that the Salazar era had come to an end, many Goans wondered what the new regime would mean to their own livelihood. To complicate matters, reports began to trickle out of Looting of Goan shops and Raping of Goan women. 3. GOA was to be a NATO base ! Harbans Singh: Mar 19, 2002 The real reason behind decision to liberate Goa perhaps was the intended move of the Portuguese to convert Goa into a NATO Base. 4. It was only a show of strength! Gabriel de Figueiredo: Mar 21, 2002 So it appears that the "Operation Vijay" was all a show and a trial of strength, rather than "liberation". Remember the blockade imposed by Nehru in 1954? India closed the borders and severed all communication (including telephonic and telegraphic) with Goa, Damão & Diu. 5. Dual Citizenship! Harbans Singh: April 1, 2002 Yes! You can have your Dabolim airport free of the Navy ( I wonder if you ever raised such a demand to free it from the Portuguese?) The Goans are very much Indian citizens like any other Indian. Some of them might also be citizens of other nationalities by birth or by domicile. Heard of the concept of Dual Citizenship? 6. Were Goans ever given a choice? NO! Gabriel de Figueiredo: Apr 15, 2002 Dabolim was a civilian airport ever since its inception, upto 19 Dec1961. It, was built by the Portuguese to break the economic blockade imposed on Goa by India, in the early '50s. Were Goans given a choice in the matter? No 7. Goans wanted autonomy! Lino Leitao: Apr 15, 2002 There were Goan intellectuals within and outside of Goa who wanted to secure first an autonomous status for Goa. 8. Thoroughbred Goans Lino Leitão : January 21, 2001 9. True Goans TGF: January 9, 2002 10. Politicians and their Promises Ramesh Anant Dhume: May 14, 2002 Today as we see the prestige of legislative assembly being dragged in the mud, we feel like saying in disgust that the Portuguese governance was far better 11. India: a corrupted democracy Tony Correia-Afonso: May 16, 2002 12. Nehru acted for the best Harbans Singh: Apr 20, 2002 What was un-natural (and it still is!) is that the Portuguese should consider their ex-colonies as part of their own country. Goans, on their own free will have adopted the Indian Constitution and sworn allegiance to it. 13. Atleast Goans look like Indians! Nitin Singh : Apr 21, 2002 Please do not short change the Indian culture. Goan culture also was part of the Indian culture before the arrival of the Portuguese. 14. So then, WHY.the nagging debate? José Colaço : May 3, 2002 Dual citizenship is a sham. No one person can truly be a citizen of two countries. It is worth understanding why an economically stable Goan would opt to give up Indian Nationality and return to Portuguese. 15. The so called Liberation of Goa Imran Farooqui: May 11, 2002 Only a Goan can gauge as to what he has won or lost since the so called Liberation. 16. Why the Debate - a response to JC Harbans Singh: May 11, 2002 Goa had always been a part of India. It is only after the Portuguese occupation a few centuries ago that it came to be considered otherwise. 17. Why the Debate - a response to Harbans Joel Almeida: May 12, 2002 I have not seen a political map of the subcontinent relating to "time immemorial". Where were the boundaries, and which political entity united them? 18. Why the Debate - a response to Harbans TGF: May 13, 2002 Goans must be made to feel as equal members of the Indian family. No appropriately qualified & experienced Goan should be shunted into some subordinate post with a non Goan brought in to LORD over the Goan. 19. TGF! Why do you disagree with my views? Imran Farooqui: May 15, 2002 Ever since the so called Liberation, Goa has achieved nothing but economic decline.

[Goanet] O Heraldo's (?) Raul quotes Eddie & Jose re: Dabolim(:-?)
ertised tourism stops in India. Goas Dabolim airport could easily outclass any Third World airport as the very worst!" Last year, the Daily Telegraph (UK) conducted a travel survey, in which readers were asked for their nominations in a number of categories. Results, published in the October 20, 2001 issue of that paper said the "best airport in the world" was Singapores. Dabolim, in Goa, was rated as the worst! Goa has been talking about building a new international airport at Mopa, a remote village in Pernem taluka. But this could be quite some time away, and has also been caught up in some controversy over the choice of siting. Mopas distance has upset the South Goa hotel lobby and also many expats from the southern part of the State who say it would benefit adjoining coastal Maharashtra which is being built up as a touristic beach-destination too more than Goa. AAI, the Airports Authority of India, and other officials have also been recently discussing plans for the renovation of the Dabolim airport, to make the "flow of incoming and outgoing tourists smooth" and increase its passenger handling capacity. Incidentally, out of the 81 airports run in India by the AAI, only 12 are believed to be "financially viable", and Dabolim is among these profitable airports, according to figures released by CIIs Goa unit recently. News reports from the German press recently said that countrys charter airline, Condor, which carries Germans to Goa could transport Indian vacationers on its return flights to Europe "probably very soon". ===== Recommended Goan Sites in Cyberspace Goa-World at http://www.goa-world.net The Goan Forum is at http://www.colaco.net __ Do You Yahoo!? [Goanet] Hindustan Times : views on 'Gujarat is burning. Gujarat needs help'
Views posted on the Hindustan Times POSTED by THE GOAN FORUMin the interest of Balance. The selected 10 posts indicate some of the views on the Gujarat fiasco. What are your views? jc for TGF Hindustan Times: Gujarat is burning. Gujarat needs help. The social fabric has been destroyed by a spate of communal violence and its economy is in a shambles. Express your feelings about Gujarat's dilemma and send in your suggestions on how peace and properity can return to this state. 1. The barbaric and incessant killing spree using even the electoral rolls to target a particular community is nothing but genocide. The very existence of RSS is built on the edifice of anti-minoritism. Golvakar, the founder of RSS, in his book We our nationhood explicitly says that all the non-Hindus should either adopt Hindu culture or live subservient to Hindus. In short, Muslims have all along been identified as foreigners and thus should be exterminated, is the mood created by the Sangh outfits. The current carnage in Gujarat is in line with this thinking, using the tools of hatred, lies and negative propaganda. All the right thinking persons will denounce the Godhra attack and the subsequent carnage in Gujarat. [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2. The Gujarat Government and its people are worse than Nazis. Nazis never indulged in killing infants and pregnant women. If I had my way, I would hang the entire Gujarat Cabinet starting with the Governor of Gujarat. I know Narendra Modi is hand in glove with the killers, but what about the Governor? It's disgusting and frustrating to be an Indian Hindu. [EMAIL PROTECTED] 3. The BJP/RSS/Bajrang Dal are ruining my investments in India. They are hurting business. They have to go and I think the businessmen (who were ironically BJP's biggest supporters) will see to it that the BJP gets wiped out in the elections next year. The BJP dug their own grave in Gujarat. [EMAIL PROTECTED] 4. During the partition era, Muslim extremists compelled Hindus to leave Pakistan and hundreds of thousands of Hindus also died in the carnage. Damage was done to both sides. But, let's look at the facts after the partition. India has had one of the most aggressive and ambitious affirmative action programs in the world. The results, while far from perfect, have produced many top level Muslim leaders in various capacities in India, and a growth of Muslims as a percentage of total population. But in Pakistan, the Hindu population has decreased from 11per cent in 1947 to around 1 per cent today, as a result of ethnic cleansing. [EMAIL PROTECTED] 4. Looking at the views of the people around, I am literally shocked. Earlier, I used to be a strong supporter of India. I never used to care about a bunch of goons like the VHP, RSS and the Bajrang Dal. They can only strike in groups and on unarmed people. [EMAIL PROTECTED] 5. I really wonder what has happened to the moral fibre of India, to public opinion, to the so-called intelligentsia. Why are'nt we seeing more protests in the country? [EMAIL PROTECTED] 6. I have been in the US for more than 25 years and met and worked with several Hindu Gujratis. With the exception of a few of them, most of them carry communal feelings against Muslims. Indirectly they are responsible for riots in Gujarat by raising funds in US for BJP, RSS and VHP. On one hand they are very soft spoken and put large banners during Eid to attract Muslim customers but privately, they despise Muslims. I think it is time for some honest God-fearing Hindu Gujratis to speak out and stop funding these rascist organizations. Remember all of us have to answer to God for our deeds here on earth. [EMAIL PROTECTED] 7. Save and strengthen the hands of Modi, not the country at this moment. Once he becomes stronger, he will make the country stronger also. There are all kinds of "skewers" who will skew the news to their own advantage. On a personal level, I do NOT support "skewers". It is impossible for me to support extremists from any religion, country, whatever, especially the ones who see NO wrong that their OWN do but Holler at the top of their voices when a mouse from their political or emotional rival/competitor crosses their path. BTW: those who made noise about the Staines' burning need to be commended for their noise. While those who blamed the Church bombings on the Sangh Parivar, need to apologize for being distinctly prejudicial - automatically thinking that IF any group bombs Christian Churches...it MUST be HINDU. If they haven't apologized yet.there is still time! And.ALL of us need to condemn the ethnic cleansing going on in Kashmir...where both Hindus & Muslims are losing lives. Lives which could have been used productively. [Goanet] India being MODIfied!
TGF comment:[ For a country which is known the world over for its peaceful people (the Partition exception having been noted), this carnage is absolutely horrifying. For years, we have assigned the blame for such horrible acts (and rightly so) to the British for Jallianwalla Bagh & the Portuguese for the Inquisition. We however stuck our heads in the sand when the Partition carnage took place. We know now that both Hindus and Muslim extremists took a very active part in the butchering of a million people. Though the slavery was abolished long back the Portuguese have been successful in enslaving the minds of many people like Colaco!] http://www.oherald.com/Editorials/column.htm#1 == response from jose colaco=== Dear Heraldo Editor, This is in response to the delightfully written article by SHRIKANT Y RAMANI in 10 April 2002 issue of The Heraldo. I will take his intriguing references to me as compliments. In return, may I say that his post reminded me of my own jesuit school training in research presentations. Since the original set of articles were published in The Navhind Times, it is possible that Heraldo readers may not have seen them. I summarize them herewith for their attention. They can decide for themselves. The articles are available in their entirety on The Goan Forum website at www.colaco.net. As my original article states quite clearly, The Portuguese were the first known European slave traders from the West African coast. There is enough evidence to conclude that slavery was not invented by the Portuguese, it existed in India for thousands of years before the Portuguese set foot in India. The Sasan Gir Sanctuary in Gujarat has a village of Siddhis who are known to have either travelled with a set of Ethiopian princes or brought from Africa by the princes of Junagadh. So, please, let us not give credit to the Portuguese when they do not deserve it. May I say that I strongly disagree with Mr. Ramani's statement that African Slavery started around 1510. He may also wish to note that the majority of Siddhis are Muslim. I am pleased that Mr. Ramani accepts that the words Nearly- 400 years ago, when the British had abolished slavery are incorrect. That was the thrust of my argument. I further contend that a lot more has to be done before it can be said that the ANYBODY has abolished slavery, especially when one looks at economic servititude. Response may also be warranted to the following from SÉRGIO MASCARENHAS DE ALMEIDA of Fundacao Oriente : #3. The conclusion we have to reach is that Mr Siddhi never mentioned the Portuguese in his statements and that, what was written by your Staff Reporter are inferences of his own making. #5. The question remains: why did your Staff Reporter invent statements that were not there and try to present history this way? I add one more question: WHO is this unidentified writer / journalist from the Navhind Times? Not another "Raul", I hope Good wishes as always. jose colaco April 18, 2001 excerpts: NAVHIND TIMES 11:Feb:2002 Page 3 Unidentified writer wrote the following: 1. The conclusion we have to reach is that Mr Siddhi never mentioned the Portuguese in his statements and that, what was written by your Staff Reporter are inferences of his own making. 4. The Africa to India slave trade existed before the arrival of the Portuguese and continued after it (Since Goa was in Muslim hands before its conquest by Afonso de Albuquerque) 5. The question remains: why did your Staff Reporter invent statements that were not there and try to present history this way? 6. After all the brickbats we throw each other, perhaps we should try sending out flowers. regarding our position on the Goa Today / Goa Com matter...this is our position: please see PASSAGE TO GOA on htp://www.colaco.net [Some of the CyberGoans we met Well known Goan journalist, Fred Noronha was the first to make contact. It was a pleasure to meet Fred. There were many things I wanted to ask Fred, and I did. At the end of it, I was happy to reinforce my original impression of Fred. Fred Noronha is one from a rare breed of ndividuals. He is extremely hard working, frightfully honest, loyal to his friends, shrewd, very helpful and a very pleasant person indeed. Let alone journalists, there are few of Fred's kind around. How Fred manages to produce such an amount of material given the rigors of Goan life and the speed or lack of it, of Goan Internet connections, beats me. It is often said that if you want something done, ask a busy person to get it done. Fred Noronha proves that saying right. After a few polite feelers, the topic of the various D-lists came up. Goa Net, TGF 's own d-list (Goa-Goans) & Goancauses. It is now generally accepted that ALL the Goans d-lists help keep the dialogue about Goa going, and the information flowing. Looks like there is some healthy competition going on; and that is good. Monopolies are never good for anyone or anything !! That the coordinators/voluteers of two different d-lists(Fred & JC) could meet with each other so cordially and discuss matters with such openness is a good sign; indicating that we are all able (if we try) to work together despite our different lives, careers and enterprises. The Goa Today topic inevitable cropped up. It is my firm belief that GoaCom, never mind the business pressures after moving into the new premises et al, should have had better sense than NOT talking things over with Uly Menezes and Gaspar Almeida of Goa World.net BEFORE taking over the e-publication of Goa Today which Goa World was hosting gratis. Uly & Gaspar are two of the most altruistic and helpful Goans one will ever find. Everyone is fully able to understand that businesses have the right to choose and to compete to the point of "grab", but this action of GoaCom can only be seen as a "stab in the back" of Uly Menezes and Gaspar Almeida ..especially that of Uly Menezes. [Goanet] re: FN on Cecil Pinto's post
From: Frederick Noronha <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Sun Apr 14, 2002 7:19 am [Let's assume the rest of Cecil Pinto's is funny (well written, no doubt) and penned without any urge to settle old scores and inter-website rivalry.] Dear Fred, There is nothing to assume about the "rest of Cecil Pinto's" post being funny. It IS, without question, a very funny post (minus the Vivian segment)! FN:[But I'd like to register my protest about the reference to Tariq Siddiqui. I guess even writing in a lighter vein does not offer a carte blanche to make bigoted insinuations about people based on accidents of birth. In the US, something like this might be called racism.] In the US, I submit that you would have to prove that the Dawood in Cecil's post is the identical one YOU are refering to, and NOT the guy who manufactures high quality shoes. [The media has been working hard at building up bias. Keep on posting, we need your voice on this forum. FN] I absolutely and unequivocally disagree that Cecil has made any 'religiously motivated bigoted statement' in his FAQ post. I agree 100% with Mr. Fernandes' statement. This contratu you guys are having, is not about ideas, it is something personal. I wish you guys would call each other and put an end to this. I believe that we can ALL work together. I sincerely do. good wishes jc possible "inventor" of the phrase JUST SAY NO TO CRACK!! welcomer of FLAMES -- From: "Paganini Fernandes" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Sun Apr 14, 2002 4:09 pm [I wonder which is greater, giving vent to one's emotions or exercising control! Answer: Tariq Siddiqui is based in Dubai and is a henchman of Dawood. He is planning to change his name to Cat Stevens and then give his old name out on rent.] = The Goan Forum Website http://www.colaco.net/ = Recommended Goan Sites in Cyberspace Goa-World at http://www.goa-world.net The Goan Forum is at http://www.colaco.net __ Do You Yahoo!? [Goanet] THE CATHOLIC CHURCH in a LURCH - breaking the silence.
Hello all I have just uploaded a preview version of THE CATHOLIC CHURCH in a LURCH. No graphic images yet. That Joe will have to handle when he has the time. the article is at http://www.colaco.net your comments, critique and corrections welcome. Will acknowledge any comments used. thank you very much ema This is the preface: Preface: We are both Roman Catholics by choice. This present sexual scandal involving the Church has not only shocked us, it has also angered us. We do not intend to change our practice of Catholicism because of the awful dalliances of some deviant members of the clergy. However, we intend to speak out against these unscrupulous individuals who have not only violated our trust but also the lives of the unsuspecting many who were entrusted in their care. These predators are a menace, and those in the hierarchy who covered up for the predators unworthy of high office. These predatory animals and their protectors have effectively slapped the faces of millions of hard working and devout Roman Catholic priests and nuns who continue to make extraordinary sacrifices in the service of the Church and others. The eerie near-silence among many Catholics is striking!. It is possible that they are still in shock at these horrible revelations. It is possible that there are those who are hoping that this is just a bad dream. It is possible that they are just too ashamed or afraid to speak out. We are breaking this silence! = Recommended Goan Sites in Cyberspace Goa-World at http://www.goa-world.net The Goan Forum is at http://www.colaco.net __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! [Goanet] re: Goa Net FAQs
Cecil Pinto: "Question: Who is Viviana Coelho? Answer: Viviana is a short, plump and ugly grandmotherly type woman. A first generation immigrant to the USA she works as a dishwasher for a major airline there." ES-C : Truthless, Tasteless and infinitely unfortunate set of words from Cecil Pinto who has a strikingly funny and creative bone in him.
