I find the discussion on this topic interesting and informative. I read
somewhere that a Nair youth from medieval Kerala, who had revolted against
the suffocating caste system there, joined hands with the Portuguese to
marry a low-caste girl with whom he had fallen in love. The ruling class put
the girl to death and passed a death sentence on him in absentia. The
Captain of a Portuguese ship took him to Portugal, where he rose to be an
Admiral in the Portuguese Navy.

Could someone confirm this incident? Maybe Dr Teotonia can throw some light
on it.

Cheers, RKN

I have been driving in Kuwait since 1990. Involved in minor accidents,
bumper to bumper, and my opponents have been women. I have not singled
out women in my reply to Cecil's post on driving traits of women.

On a larger and wider base I have included Taxi and Pickup drivers, all
males, who are reckless, who don't respect safety and who don't care
about defensive driving.

The bias against women is not my intention. There are women drivers in
Kuwait who cover themselves from head to toe. These are the drivers,
look more like stealth bombers, who are a worrisome lot to all drivers
including ladies.

Moreover the instructors, in driving schools, point out how to be
cautious to capricious, impetuous and arrogant drivers; Taxi drivers,
Pickup drivers and women drivers.

My friend Avelino and good friend Cecil's responses just reflect part of

the Goa male chauvinism that dominates our debates. Women may have been
late learners (in some parts of the globe) when it came to drive, but
aren't they more careful and cautious? Weren't we reading a story
recently
on insurance premia rates (and why these should have been lower in the
case of women) or something like that?

A deliberately provocative FN (who means it!)

-
RESPONSE: The premium rates that women have to pay on their car
insurance in
the U.K. is sizeably lower than what men have to pay. Now a spanner has
been
thrown into the works - in the guise of equality the E.U. Commissioner
has
ruled this discrimatory. The bottom line is that women will end up
paying
more for their insurance; to the delight I am sure of the Insurance Cos.

I think women are wonderful drivers - I frequently ask my wife to drive,
to
to avail. So I have to restrict my drinking when out for socials!

Cheers,

Gabe.

Joel's News Clips
WOMEN ON TOP IN GOA'S ROAD SHOW: Hundreds of men and women have been
killed during the last few decades in road accidents in Goa, specially
two-wheeler mishaps, but the number of victims among women riders has
been very negligible, according to traffic police sources. While 203 men
and 24 women lost their lives so far this year in road accidents, none
of them was a female two-wheeler rider. The 24 women victims were either
pillion riders or pedestrians..It may be argued that the number of
female scooterists is less.
And many argue that they also disobey rules. But the fact is they ride
safe.
(Paul Fernandes in GT)

At the risk of being labelled as prejudiced I can say with confidence
that most women riders (and drivers) in Goa have very poor road sense.
There are the few who can take any man for a ride but those are the
exception rather than the rule.

In Goa women riders will:
- Park wrongly
- Reverse without looking
- Turn without signalling
etc.

True in general they drive slower then men (which is not necessarily a
good thing, specially on a highway) but they more than make up for it
with their total lack of knowledge about the rules of civic driving. At
any time if I see a bike hesitantly weaving in front of me on the road I
know that the chances are good that its either somebody whose tyre just
got punctured, or more probably, a woman rider. The tight skirted
variety are and even bigger danger because they can't easily place a
foot on the road to stabilise their bike.

And if ever you see a woman driving a car ahead of you please Keep Safe
Distance if you value your life. They will brake in the middle of the
road or suddenly swerve to one side or do something totally nonsensical
like trying to park in an impossible place or take a wide turn where a
sharp one was required (and then reverse and cause a traffic jam).

My advice to any vehicle owner is to go ahead of (overtake - but keep a
wide berth) a woman driver/rider who is dithering on the road unsure of
where to park/ turn/ stop, or else by driving/ riding behind her you are
placing your vehicle/ life/ limb at grave risk.

No wonder the statistics show there are less women dying in vehicle
accidents. The women are causing the accidents and the men are dying.

Potholes, stray cattle, stray dogs, drunken driving - all these can
someday be controlled. But who is going to control licenses being given
to women who have no road sense?

Brickbats welcome from women. Please state your License Number and how

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2004 08:42:48 PM ]
PANAJI: A day after the Centre announced Goa as the
official venue for the International Film Festival
this year, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday
said this year's event would aim to look beyond films
and would also tap the business potentials.

"We aim to look beyond just films this year, including
a film bazaar for any business opportunities that can
be tapped and several other such events. Now that the
Centre has formally declared Goa as the venue, all
those who doubted it can now stop their tongues from
wagging," Parrikar said.

"We were never in any doubt that whether the festival
would take place here. We were aware that the delay in
the announcement was due to the election Code of
Conduct during the by-poll to the Poinguinim seat," he
said.

Elaborating on his government's plans for IFFI, the
Chief Minister said "we plan to set up plasma screens
all over the state so that Goans can also be included
in on the festival and be able to watch some of them.
We have also hired an event management company to
carry out certain aspects of planning and execution in
various events."

While the total budget for the festival alone was Rs
25 crore, Parrikar said other costs like roads,
sprucing up of infrastructure would run into excess of
Rs 50 crore.

"We have asked for plan assistance from the Centre,
but that proposal is still in the pipeline. Even if we
don't get any funds from the Centre, we have the
financial capability to pay for the event from our own
pocket," he added.

One Crore according to the dictionary is 10 million rupees. ( 100 Lakhs) X
25 makes it 250 mil.
I dont think this equates to 5 billion usdollars. More like under 5 million
usdollars which is really cheap for an Air Port!

Fred's posting on this subject was addressed to me
among others, even though I had not commented so far,
probably to elicit a response, so here goes

Yes, Fred, I am very disappointed at your comment.

Most Americans are very generous and friendly. I feel
certain that the Marines did what they did out of a
genuine sense of service and helping out where they
felt the need. Here in the USA, the Marines have
sponsored the "Toys for Tots" program around Christmas
time for decades. Get to know a marine on a one-to
one basis and you most likely will find a genuine
human being who cares about society and his fellow
human beings.

Let us separate the view one has of the "Ugly
American"
and the policies of the American government from the
rank and file people of the United States, most of
whom are very friendly and caring, and bewildered that
many people around the world hate Americans. Let us
stop our stereo-typing mentality about people from any
country or any race.

Proud to be an American of Goan origin.

Subject: Famous British Murder Mystery Reopened
   Newsgroups: alt.true-crime
   Date: 2004-10-17 06:55:19 PST
 Sunday October 17, 2004 2:31 AM
 http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,1280,-4556200,00.html
LONDON (AP) - Detectives have reopened an investigation into one of
Britain's most famous murder mysteries: the disappearance 30 years ago
of the dashing Lord Lucan days after his children's nanny was
bludgeoned to death and his wife beaten with a lead pipe.
Debate on Lucan's fate has been a popular national pastime since he
vanished, leaving behind a bloodstained car near the English coast.
Some say the aristocrat drowned himself in the English Channel, others
believe he fled abroad to live under an assumed identity.
Now, despite a 1999 declaration by the High Court that Lucan is
officially dead, Scotland Yard is reopening the case.
Detectives said Saturday they plan to employ techniques not in use
when the case was last reviewed 10 years ago, like DNA profiling and
 computer imaging.
Experts already have generated an image of how Lucan might look as a
 69-year-old man using ``age-progression'' software.
Scotland Yard said the case is being reviewed ``just to ensure all the
potential lines of inquiry have been followed and pursued, and to see
if any new ones come up as a result of DNA techniques.''
It said detectives still receive regular calls from the public
 providing information about the case.
Richard John Bingham, the Seventh Earl of Lucan, has not been seen
since the night of Nov. 7, 1974, when nanny Sandra Rivett was battered
to death in the family's home in London's wealthy Belgravia district.
Lucan's wife, Veronica, was hit in the back of the head repeatedly
when she ran downstairs to investigate. She later told police her
attacker was her husband. She fully recovered from the attack.
Detectives believe Lucan intended to murder his wife - his marriage
has been described as ``grimly unhappy'' - and killed the nanny by
 mistake.
Warrants for Lucan's arrest on charges of murdering Rivett and
attempting to murder his wife have never been served.
Lucan's friends and family have long maintained he drowned himself in
the English Channel. Inside the car he left behind, police found a
length of lead pipe and bloodstains matching the types of both Lucan
 and the nanny Sandra Rivett.
But at least 70 Lucan ``sightings'' have been reported since his
disappearance, in such far-flung places as Melbourne, Australia, and
 Johannesburg, South Africa.
Some conspiracy theorists speculated Lucan might be tempted to sneak
an up-close peek at his daughter's London wedding in 1998, but even
the most avid watchers failed to spot him. He was declared dead the
 following year.
There was another flurry of interest last year when a former senior
Scotland Yard detective claimed pictures of a gaunt, bearded man taken
in the Indian state of Goa in the early 1990s were of Lucan.
Former policeman Duncan MacLaughlin claimed in his book, ``Dead
Lucky,'' that Lucan lived undetected in India under the name Barry
Halpin in India from 1975 until his death in 1996.
Friends of Barry Halpin later came forward to insist the dead man was
not Lord Lucan and was in fact a former teacher from the town of St.
 Helens in northern England.
Another retired detective, Superintendent Alec Edwards, who was in
charge of the Lucan files between 1990 and 1995, welcomed the
 reopening of the inquiry.
``I very much believe that Lucan is still alive,'' Edwards told the
Daily Mail newspaper. ``I believe he was not the sort of man to take
his own life. His actions after the incident were not consistent with
 someone planning to kill himself.''
Edwards said it was likely that Lucan had fled to Africa, where he had

Whatever else one may conclude, the statistics prove that when it comes to
just 'dying for a ride' in Goa, it is not 'ladies first'.

To quote a Siddhuism," Statistics is like a bikini: what it reveals is
suggestive, what it conceals is vital." The Goa cops havce their own vital
statistics on road accidents. That is ,of course, without prejudice to a
woman's right to be on the top, whether riding a bike or otherwise.

It is really unfortunate that the caste system survives all types of
conversions: catholicism, islamism, buddhism, sikhism, in addition to being
a bane of hinduism in India. I am told that Indians take take their castes
with them as undeclared baggage to foreign lands and multiply it there
illicitly.

Ideally, the caste system India was "BEST BEFORE 15 August,1947" Why we use
this outdated package in the current era is beyond my comprehension. Like
the live but expired misiles and mortars from Iran that are making news in
North India these days, they may explode in the re-cycling units of society
in which they surface if not defused before the scrap goes into the
melting pot.

Death from Malaria!
New tool developed on Goan cyberspace.

If you can't attack the disease,
Attack the messenger. :=))

Since the above does not apply to JC's post, I re-looked at what I
wrote. Here it is:

"Many will express their sympathy at the funeral and in academic
corridors. I hope however that this sentiment translates into action to
spur the government and local citizens to do something about mosquitoes
and malaria. Both these problems have been solved in the civilized
world. There is no reason for Goa and India to be continued to be
plagued by them."

Analysis: In fact, I am putting Goa and India in the civilized world
category and making a positive statement that "there is no reason" they
should be continued to be plagued by mosquitoes and Malaria. It appears
that some GoaNetters would want to classify these places as
"under-developed" world. The latter in my view is an insult to Goa ani
Panaji. I think!

Either I don't understand this or some are showing a herd-instinct of
following Senhor RKN. Either way, this is not as important as fighting
those pesky critters ani parasites and a potentially fatal illness. So
here is my correction to those who think /insists the above should call
Goa and India under-developed rather that uncivilized (which DOES NOT
APPEAR in the original sentence).

I hope this does not generate aniek round of English terminologies.
Though it would be fun! I'll then have to write it in Konglish ani/ or
Hinglish ani tea bhair in amchi bhas.:=)) You know, I am very good at
this and do it so well. :=))

Dear all:

I would like to take Fred's skepticism of the US Navy's recent efforts one step
further. I am
disappointed by goanetters' responses challenging his view as if the US Navy does not
have an
ulterior motive in this modern day public relations world we live in. Why should the
US Navy be
welcomed? How many does it take to paint a classroom if that is their intention?

Currently, the US is prosecuting an illegal war in Iraq where possibly 30,000 Iraqi
civilians have
died. Is it difficult to take a stand and say no to US dollars? What if some
terrorist group
came to Goa, wanted to paint 3 classrooms and hold an annual conference in Goa? In
the name of
tourism are we to say Yes?

Modern tourism has a number of side-effects, many of them detrimental. Fred is
actually soft and
polite in his comments. Maybe the real debate we should have is whether modern-day
"war
missionaries" should be welcome - with US imperialism and hegemony as the side-effect.

That's my jaded view!

George

born, Kaveripuram, near Mettur.
Feb 1992 Underling, Gurunathan, killed by task force.

government against Veerappan.
May 1993 Interview with a news magazine, Veerappan
recounts cutting enemies to pieces and feeding them to
fish in the Cauvery river. The Independent.
May 1993 Wife Muthulakshmi arrested.
Jul 1993 Strangles his newly born female infant,
because it is the third female in a row.
Jan 1994 Underling, Kolandai, suicides.
Dec 1994 Brother, Arjunan, surrenders to police, along
with associates Ayyadurai and Rangaswamy. Authorities
claim Arjunan swallowed a cyanide capsule.
1995 Brother, Arjunan, dies while in task force
custody. Rangaswamy also dies in custody.
1996 Records nine hours of videotape interview, later
aired on Sun TV.
Jun 1996 Offers to surrender to the president of
India, in exchange for amnesty.
13 Jul 1997 Kidnaps nine officials of the forestry
service, holds them for 44 days.

Hi Vivian (D'Souza): You misread me once, twice and thrice for the
following reasons

(i) I didn't address the post to you, but to Viv(iana) who had earlier
commented on my comments; I was responding to her. You of course have a right
to your views, but cannot fault me for a post "addressed to me among others,
even thought I had not commented so far..."

(ii) My post does not question the generosity or friendliness of "most
Americans". My comments came to raise a counterpoint to what seemed a rather
gullible (no offence meant!) perspective on what the Marines had come to Goa
for, and what they did here. I found it rather odd to argue that the US
military men were "welcomed as guests" or that the painting of two classrooms
deserved to be so much tom-tommed about.

(iii) My goal isn't to stereotype any race, but simply to say we need to be
more critical in swallowing what a powerful PR machinery (the US military in
this case) tells us. FN

Gilbert, You're presuming that (i) the US marines were "welcomed" as guests
rather than dollar-spenders in Goa (ii) the Goans were great hosts, going by
what the PR writer attached to the US Navy put out (iii) the class-room
painting act was something more than a public relations exercise by a
military force which has earned a lot of criticism and dismay, if not
disgust, for its actions around the globe.
You are also assuming that painting of class-rooms is a priority in Goa, and
that this is what expat Goans (and "native" Goanetters) are best suited to
undertake and coordinate.
Finally, don't forget the First Law of Volunteering and Throwing Up

which everyone else has to implement!"

3. The Goans were great hosts.
4. Thy Americans provided a good example to native Goans and
non-resident Goans by donation and service (painting two class rooms) to a
school for poor in Goa.
Now can we gain from all this? Can the Goans concerned about the
perpetuity of caste, do a paint-job in a school which is predominant of
the lower caste? Let's show our disdain for caste in Goa by doing
something about it . with our hands. Can international GoaNetters at

How many of Goans in cyberspace as well as down in Goa knew that:

a) compensation was paid for the land acquired for the naval air station.

b) details of a lease agreement signed between the ministry of defence and the
civil aviation department, that the use of the airfield for civil aviation
purposes was subject to the condition that it would in no way interfere with
the functioning of the Navy.

===

Hi Almeidaji,

I was not aware of the above. I'd be grateful if you could furnish more
details as to who paid compensation to whom and when.

Was the Goa govt involved in the lease agreement?

Or was Goa (and its citizens) just treated as "spoils of war"?

>From the Nairobi Institute website
http://www.nicentenary.com/index.html

The Nairobi Institute Centenary Celebrations
1905 -2005

One hundred years . the countdown begins
>From Goa, a Portuguese overseas province, the bold and
the beautiful came to Nairobi. Some came as
adventurers while others came as fortune hunters and
did what they did back home, which is play, eat, drink
and be merry. In 1890, they formed the Portuguese
Cricket Club, which was the birth cell of the Goan
Institute.

Since culture is a critical factor in the development
of any society, they needed an anchoring point and an
identity so as to instil a sense of belonging,
direction and purpose. On the 11th of June 1905, so as
to capture that spirit and identity, they convened a
general meeting and re-designated themselves as 'THE
GOAN INSTITUTE NAIROBI' affectionately known as the
'GI.' Dr. Ribeiro was its first President.
Mr. Leandro D'Mello laid the foundation stone of the
first GI club house situated on Ronald Ngala Street
formally known as Duke Street courtesy of the colonial
government. In those days, the Institute was one of
the few stone structures in Nairobi and served as a
focal point for Goan social and sporting activities up
to 1955 when the Golden Jubilee was celebrated in
those hallowed premises.

The idea of erecting the present building to Juja
Road, that was within close proximity to Eastleigh,
Pangani, Ngara and Parklands where there was a huge
concentration Goans was proposed in 1946 by Romeo
Fernandes. The property on Duke Street was sold to
East African Breweries and the proceeds of sale as
well as the fund raising efforts of the members
contributed to the construction of the present
clubhouse. The foundation stone of the new Goan
Institute was laid in September 1955 by Sir Evelyn
Baring, Governor of Kenya who later opened the
building on the 11th of June 1957. An indoor badminton
court was added in 1965 and bar and kitchen extensions
were carried out in 1972. The Institute has continued
to make progress over the years and in 1979 two squash
courts were built. A beer garden and children's play
area was constructed in 1984 and in 1985 a Roll of
Honour plaque incorporating the names of Trustees
since formation was unveiled. 2002 saw the
refurbishing of the lounge, card room, children's play
park and play room.

The Goan Institute has served social, literary,
dramatic and sporting needs of its members. It was the
nursery for outstanding sportsmen and women who
ushered Kenya on to the world-sporting scene. At least
on one occasion more than half the Kenya hockey team
comprised of the GI players. Its hockey team was the
first winner of the M.R.D'Souza Gold Cup, the blue
riband of club hockey in East Africa. Our current
hockey team endeavours to achieve the same in the year
2005.

In 1981 the Goan institute heeded the call for
eradication of ethnic names and was christened the
NAIROBI INSTITUTE.

Although the GOAN INSTITUTE was basically an exclusive
Goan cultural enterprise it is worth noting that
today, the club is a multi-cultural Institution. Those
from the hills of Hindustan, those from the plains of
Pakistan; those from the slopes of Mount Kenya and
those from the shores of Lake Victoria are all seated
at the table of brotherhood and sisterhood with shared
friendship and laughter and all because of those who
came FROM GOA WITH LOVE.

We need more spunky young women like her in Goa. I just cant understand why
she uses 'Geeks' to describe her motley crowd of supporters and I did check
Geek in Fred's favorite Wikipedia.

There is nothing in TRYING !>
===
My dear Renebab,
Yep..."There is nothing in TRYING". I will try to respond to your post
wrt #1 : Please try elaborate what you mean by " Goan Doctors coming(sic)
TOGETHER to work for the betterment of the Goan community"

I hope you will realize that doctors in Goa have virtually ceded complete
control of Medicine to the politicians.

Think about this: IF the Goa CM tells a Head of Department at GMC to ADMIT
a person to the ICU for 3 days observation. .. and the person does NOT
need to be in hospital at all, WHAT are the chances that the Head of
Department will stand his/her ground, and say a Polite NO ?

Will this happen in the UK?
wrt # 2 : I do not know what is wrong about Goans speaking up for Goans and
about Goa. Are you suggesting that Goans in cyberspace exercise
self-censorship ?

Maybe we should join the Procession that Floriano and all are having for the
Goa-Press

wrt #3 : Please advise us what EXAMPLE we should lead by.
wrt #4: What do you mean by that? You mean Goans cannot advise other Goans
? and Doctors are NOT human being who might benefit from advice?

That is a load of bovine dung, Rene!

George Pinto Mon Oct 18 16:45:03 2004

Currently, the US is prosecuting an illegal war in Iraq
Modern tourism has a number of side-effects, many of them detrimental.
Maybe the real debate we should have is whether modern-day "war
missionaries" should be welcome>

-->
Interesting Message from George Pinto
It appears from his post that he is AGAINST illegal military actions.
Is he therefore ( as a matter of principle ) AGAINST the 1961 action by
India?

Unless he is saying that the 1961 India action in Goa is legal.
About not welcoming the Navy, I say Let's be equitable in our thoughts. WHY
welcome ANY Navy to Goa except the Merchant Navy ?

Let's not beat up on a Navy which is DOING IT FOR Goa while turning a blind
eye towards a Navy which is DOING IT TO Goa

It's like those Roman Catholic Church guys who are refusing to give
Communion to individuals who support Women's Abortion rights BUT say nothing
about fellas who support the Death penalty.

Hey guys .. a murder is a murder ! OK ! Like an illegal military
action is an illegal military action.

Diversionary Ostrichoid " pre-1961 Time warp" comments having been taken
into account!

For those who are actually interested in DOING something contact me (as Rene mentioned
regarding
malaria). For those who have an overactive key-board and prefer to send emails, I
will take a
pass.

Thanx Silviano, Melinda n Francisco !

You sure "flashed" some nostalgic memories or as our goanetter
and my fellow goan Tanzanian - Viv would say "taking me down memory
lane"

And if I appendage Francisco, music transcends all barriers and has
been a unifying factor in bringing people of diverse cultures
together. But none could have summed it up better than the great
William Shakespeare and I quote " If music be the food of love, then
lets play on."

On a lighter one, even though I am great lover of progressive jazz,
black african music, fast rock and konkani music, I sternly believe
that all the popular oldies are like the great classical number -
the "Blue Danube"- they will be "never die".

Silviano, with your permission, I'll take it in numerical sequence.

1) Add Cliff Richard's Bachelor Boy and the Next Time.

2)Nina and Frederick's Listen To The Ocean".

3) Pat Boone's "Speedy Gonzalez" and "Don't Forbid Me".

4)Come September - Silviano, that was my father's favorite in
addition to "Wheels" Cha Cha Cha which you can add as another
instrumental. I made it a point to get a special tape recorded
with both these songs and some other songs by Connie Francis
which my father and mother liked- including "My Happiness" and
"Lipstick On Your Collar".

5) Baby Elephant Walk by the late Henry Mancini on Radio Ceylon.
Since we could not get proper radio transmission in the fifties
in my hometown- Iringa in southern Tanzania, we used to tune to Radio
Ceylon and Radio Lourenco Marques (renamed Maputo) which
were then probably the finest musical stations in the Third World.

Baby Elephant walk is the theme song from the movie - "Hatari"
(Danger in Swahili) which was filmed in Northern Tanzania. It
featured the late American actors- John Wayne and Red Buttons, the
German actor- Hardy Kruger and the actress-Elsa Martinelli.

9)How about Marie Lou and Someday by Ricky Nelson.

Melinda, you cited Wooden Heart by Elvis Presley from the movie-
GI BLue " featuring Elvis and the American actress and noted ballroom
dancer and judge- Juliet Prowse.

This song is a regular at all our "sing along" sessions in New
York and New Jersey, and many of the folks love my version as I
"throw" in two verses in my "broken" german. (the movie was filmed
in the then West Germany).

In addition to Perry Como's "Catch a Falling Star", he had another
great oldie- please refresh my memory.

Other oldies that I would like to add are "Sealed With a Kiss" and
a couple of songs dealing with the color Blue- "Blue Moon",
"Blueberry Hill" by Fats Domino and "Blue, Blue You're Love
Is True".

I look forward to some more additions.

rgds.

Tony.

The world over it is known what American navy is upto in Iraq.
No where will the American navy be welcomed; not even in the
US I guess nowadays.

Only some American bootlickers will talk about Goans welcoming
American navy.

Yes, some Goans might wait for some dollar droppings, the only
worthwhile thing the American navy can bring.

Samir Kelekar
