[Goanet]Mahindra escape with a draw against Sporting Clube de Goa

2005-03-06 Thread Eustaquio Santimano
Mahindra escape with a draw
March 05, 2005 19:40 IST
A lucky equaliser by substitute Khalid Jamil five minutes from the end
helped Mahindra United hold Sporting Clube de Goa to a 1-1 draw in an ONGC
National Football League clash in Mumbai, on Saturday.

Mahindra looked lethargic in the first half, in which they conceded a goal
scored by Nicholas Rodrigues in the 28th minute.

Rodrigues, who aimed the post from the right of the box, saw his shot
going in off defender Jatin Bisht's leg, which left Mahindra custodian
Sandip Nandy hapless.

Changing ends, Mahindra picked up the tempo but failed to find the
equaliser till the match got to the fag end. It finally came five minutes
before the end saving them from a second defeat at home.

A diagonal lob from hard-working medio Debabrata Roy found the gangling
Abhishek Yadav stationed close to the six-yard box and his try hit
Sporting midfielder Abebayo Adewusi's left hand prompting the referee to
point to the spot.

Jamil, who came on as substitute for midfielder Kulothungan at the hour
mark, made no mistake and Mahindra went home with a hard earned point in
their kitty which boosted their overall tally to 18 from 11 matches.

Sporting, who dominated the first half and managed to keep the home team
at bay for the better part of the second session, took their tally to 14
from eight matches.

The only consolation for Sporting who saw a win evade them in the last few
minutes was hardworking Joseph Pereira and roving defender Bibiano
Fernandes jointly winning the player of the match award.

Sporting had the better share of the exchanges with their Nigerian trio of
Abebayo, Chidi and captain Dudu Omagbemi combining well with Joseph
Pereira and Bibiano Fernandes to trouble the stuttering Mahindra defence.

But the Goans had to wait till the 28th minute to find the net. A short
pass from Bibiano found Nicholas Rodrigues take a stiff angular shot which
was deflected into the goal by Bisht with his outstretched left leg.

A minute later the Goans were foiled when Joseph Pereira was stopped in
the nick of time from scoring by Nandy after he received a cross from
Chidi.

The change of ends saw Mahindra move with better purpose, but it needed a
few substititions by coach Syed Nayeemuddin to really galvanise the home
team's frontline.

The locals should have equalised in the first minute after resumption of
play but Yadav failed to score after getting a long ball inside the
penalty box with only rival custodian Luis Berretto, who too had a good
match, to beat.

With Mahindras putting almost everyone up front to get the equaliser,
Sporting staged a couple of dangerous counter-attacks, without success.

Sporting's best chance to increase the lead came 15 minutes from the end,
but Nandy showed fine reflexes to successively foil Dudu and Chidi before
Jamil notched Mahindra's equaliser.

Fisichella wins Australian GP
Narain Karthikeyan finished 15th for Jordan as the highest-ranked of the
four men making their Grands Prix debuts in Australia.

March 06, 2005 10:18 IST
Italy's Giancarlo Fisichella won the season-opening Australian Grand Prix
for Renault on Sunday as Ferrari's seven times world champion Michael
Schumacher failed to finish.

Brazilian Rubens Barrichello finished second for champions Ferrari, ahead
of Fisichella's Spanish team mate Fernando Alonso.

Briton David Coulthard gave the new Red Bull team a strong debut with
fourth place after running as high as second while Australian Mark Webber
was fifth for Williams.

Narain Karthikeyan, India's first Formula One driver who started 12th on
the grid, finished 15th for Jordan as the highest-ranked of the four men
making their Grands Prix debuts in Australia.

While Fisichella started on pole and won with a 5.5 second margin,
celebrating only the second win of his career, Schumacher was never in
contention.

The German, winner of 13 of last season's 18 races, capped a miserable
weekend with retirement 13 laps from the finish after a collision with
compatriot Nick Heidfeld's Williams.

Heidfeld shunted Schumacher off into the gravel at turn three and although
the Ferrari driver was pushed back on to the track, he pitted and retired.

Heidfeld also stopped.
The world champion's race had already been wrecked by starting 19th after
a sudden storm rained on his hopes during Saturday qualifying.

Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya finished sixth on his McLaren debut and
Austrian Christian Klien handed Red Bull two more points with seventh
place.

Finland's Kimi Raikkonen was eighth after starting from the pitlane as a
result of stalling on the grid during an aborted first start to the race.

Curiously, Fisichella's victory was his first on the day of a race.
His only previous win was at the rain-hit 2003 Brazilian grand prix where
he was declared the winner several days after the event when a timing
error was discovered.

It was a trouble-free race: Narain
March 06, 2005 13:33 IST
Narain Karthikeyan, who finished 15th at the Australian Grand Prix, said
he was happy with his performance in the Formula One debut race even
though he had a "very bad" start on Sunday.

The Jordan driver, who started in 12th place, slipped to the 18th spot on
his first lap at the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne. But the 28-year-old
said said he was glad to complete all the 57 laps in the race which saw
three drivers including seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher
failing to finish.

"I had a very bad start and then stayed behind [Jordan teammate Tiago]
Monteiro for a while. After the first pit stop, I pushed a lot and it was
a trouble-free race," Karthikeyan said after the race.

"It is very good to finish the first Grand Prix of the season and I am
looking forward to the next race, even though the weather conditions will
be much warmer and humid."

Trevor Carlin, Jordan's Sporting Director, said his team was not
targetting to do even better in the next Grand Prix in Malaysia.

"We are very glad we finished the year's first Grand Prix. We got both
cars to the finish and that is an achievement, even though it would have
been nice to finish a bit higher up the results table," Carlin said.

"Now we are looking forward to going to Malaysia and if possible improving
the car a little bit."

He finished 15th, one place ahead of fellow-Jordan rookie Tiago Monteiro
of Portugal.

Karthikeyan can take heart from the fact that he ended the race fastest
amongst the rookies.

Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella won the race, finishing the 57 laps of the
5.303-km circuit in 1 hour, 24 minutes, 17.336 seconds, 5.55 seconds. He
was followed to the chequered flag by Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello and
Renault's Fernando Alonso.

Defending champion Michael Schumacher of Ferrari failed to finish,
crashing out with 15 laps remaining after starting on the back row of the
grid.

Seven-time world champion Schumacher, who started 19th on the grid after
rain wrecked his qualifying chances on Saturday, collided with Mark Webber.

Today's competition followed a new format that restricted the drivers to
one engine for two races and one tire set-up per race.

Earlier, Karthikeyan, who had secured the ninth place in the first
qualifying on Saturday, dropped three places in Sunday's qualifying
despite coming up with a better timing at 1 minute 32.735, which was
almost 12 seconds faster than his previous effort.

India complete 5-0 rout over China
March 06, 2005 14:50 IST
India completed a clean sweep against China in the Davis Cup Asia Oceania
Group I tie in Delhi on Sunday after Harsh Mankad beat Lu Hao 6-2, 6-3 in
the second reverse singles.

Earlier, Prakash Amritraj gave India a 4-0 lead when he beat Sun Peng 6-2,
6-4 in the first reverse singles of the dead rubber.

On Saturday, India had taken an unassailable 3-0 lead after Leander Paes
and Mahesh Bhupathi won the doubles.

The 22-year-old Prakash, who registered his first Davis Cup victory in
five appearances on Saturday, kept his momentum going despite the fact
that the result of the match was not going to have any bearing on the
final outcome.

The son of the legendary Vijay Amritraj, Prakash continued to impress with
his serve and volley playing style as he broke Peng in the third and
seventh games of the first set and never had a break point against him to
take the set 6-2.

The second set was no different as Peng once again struggled to come to
terms with the grass court and lost his serve in the third game.

Prakash, who hit seven aces in the match, never came under pressure on any
of his service games as he wrapped up the match in just 48 minutes.

India take on the winner of the match between Indonesia and Uzbekistan for
a berth in the World Group play-offs.

Results:
India 5, China 0
Singles: Harsh Mankad (Ind) bt Sun Peng (Chn) 7-5, 6-3, 6-2; Prakash
Amritraj (Ind) bt Wang Yu (Chn) 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

Doubles: Leander Paes/Mahesh Bhupathi (Ind) bt Wang Yu/Zhu Ben-Qiang (Chn)

I don't recall the notion of "soglem casteists" in the
entire Goanet archive. This notion is a curious one
given that anti-castists outnumber the one or two
pro-castists or caste-apologists on Goanet by a huge
margin. Even when we anti-castists disagree on
everything else under the sun we seem to agree on this
one issue, that caste is blatant discrimination any
way you look at it, that caste is wrong on its face,
that caste is incompatible with the very essence of
Christianity, and that this heinous system must be
abolished.

So how did the notion of "soglem" get into the
discussion? Does it take research to prove that
"soglem" does not apply to anything? The very fact
that this thread is continuing for so long is prima
facie evidence that caste exists, and it is not
"soglem" who are continuing the discussion but just a
couple of Goanetters.

Avelino, do you even understand what you are writing?
The 5,000 years refers to Hindus. Christ preached
that everyone was the same. Did you even get this
part of your catechism? Goans have been Christian for
up to 450 years or so.

There are NO pros to castism, man, unless you can find
"pros" in discriminating against people for reasons
they cannot control like color and caste. What is the
matter with you? Since you are such a proponent of
castism maybe you should tell us the "pros" that you
see in it.

I have Palestinian friends and business clients, but I
oppose most of what their militants believe about
their "rights" in Palestine, other than what they can
peacefully negotiate with Israel. It is only their
extremists who have something in common with the
Nazis, which is to commit genocide against Jews. And
what does Palestine have to do with the Goan Catholic
caste system? All we anti-castists want is for
Catholics who still follow the caste system to realize
how wrong and destructive and anti-Christian this
system is.

Avelino writes:

Since you are "baffled" with our opposition to
discrimination, there is little that will not "baffle"

some crazy Goanetters. I am confronting it and it's

breastfeed you have to be a martyr anyway for a short period of time,
and with your first baby you are so frightened.

"For years we had no social life at all. It was control freakery. I
didn't feel comfortable putting them into full-time childcare. I felt
that I had had a good life and seen a lot of the world so I was
prepared to put the children first." She pauses, and adds: "But I
think I did go over the top."

Tina's sacrifices for six-year-old Felix, Astrid, nine, and Ingrid,
10, will be familiar to most parents.

For many, the birth of a child creates a bond so strong it remains
unbroken by a return to work, a romantic weekend break or even a
single night out for many years.

It is an approach that is encouraged by a child-centric culture in
which youngsters are more than just the apple of their parents' eye:
they are cosseted and praised, clothed in the latest expensive kiddie
fashions by mums in threadbare jumpers, and taken to the latest
mindless Disney cartoon by dads for whom Al Pacino has become a fond
but distant memory.

Not always grateful, the youngsters are ferried hundreds of miles
every year to tumbletots, jungle gym, swimming and ballet by parents
frantically making up for the time they spend at work.

Meanwhile, discipline is all but a dirty word associated with
Victorian-era punishment and deprivation. Many children rule the
family home, as well as supermarket aisles, by simply throwing
tantrums when they don't get their own way.

It's a "them-first" style of parenting that has evolved since the
1960s, in the belief that such an approach produces confident, happy
children whose talents will be fully explored.

But, finally, the backlash has begun.

The counter-attack is being led by a new breed of child experts that
Dr Spock and Miriam Stoppard would frown upon.

Christie Mellor, author of the self-explanatorily titled book We Were
Here First, Kid, weighs in with phrases such as "Sadly the use of
child-sized muzzles has never caught on, though I can't see why not."

Her advice on dealing with tantrums? The cupboard. "If your child is
prone to yelling and screaming lead him to a quiet corner," she says.
"When your child realises he will be alone in some dark, cramped
cupboard free of an adult audience he will soon tire of the sport and
move on to quieter activities."

Instead of mollycoddling as a reaction to bad behaviour, the latest
experts advise firm discipline, including threats and deprivation. And
they even suggest that children can be put to good use in the kitchen
by teaching them how to mix not fairy cakes or muffins but mum and
dad's favourite cocktail. Equally, they recommend a stern look like
the one your own mother used to adopt that made you realise you were
in big trouble. Mellor even suggests the odd kick under the table.

Mellor's philosophy is straightforward: "We have become ineffectual
lap dogs to our children. If you don't start saying no to your
children as if you mean it the tantrums will only get worse. Let us be
frank. You were here first. You are sharing your house with them, your
food, your time, your books. Somewhere in fairly recent memory we have
lost sight of that fact."

Her darkly humorous chapter headings include 'Saying no to your child:
It's a kick!', 'Bedtime: Is five-thirty too early?', 'Child labour:
Not just for the third world!', 'Self-esteem and other over-rated
concepts', 'Children's music: Why?' and 'Screaming: Is it Necessary?'
Mellor is not alone. Another new parenting guru is self-confessed
"Slacker Mom" Muffy Mead-Ferro, a working mother of two who has
published a set of lessons learned from her own grandmother. Rather
than child-proofing the house, buying educational toys and ferrying
children to after-school activities she advises entertaining them by
simply telling them: "Go outside."

While many parents live in constant fear of their child being harmed,
Mead-Ferro believes, somewhat controversially, this is a lesson best
learned from close contact with hot taps and sharp edges.

Equally un-PC advice comes in Perry W Buffington's Cheap Psychological
Tricks for Parents, which states that the age of parents as friends is
over and suggests a number of bribes and threats to make the little
ones do as their elders wish.

Instead of endlessly nagging children to leave their dirty shoes
outside, you should occasionally put small treats in correctly stored
shoes. If a wastebasket is within nine feet, children will try to use
it; further than that, they won't

[Goanet]Canker within.........Indian Politics.

The canker within: threat to Indian democracy:

[India News]: By Amulya Ganguli : The political turmoil in Bihar,
Jharkhand and Goa and its disruptive impact on the Indian parliament
are a direct result of two major factors - the decline of national
parties, such as the Congress, and a fall in the calibre of
politicians.

Unless immediate cognisance is taken by the political class to counter
the debilitating effect of these trends, the democratic system itself
may be in danger.

Both these developments have been in the making for some time. But it
is only now that their harmful effects have become all too evident. It
is not the military, as in Pakistan, or the monarchy, as in Nepal, or
religious fundamentalism, as in Afghanistan, which pose a threat to
Indian democracy, but the canker within.

As the Congress has shrunk, losing its earlier aura as the party that
won India's independence, a number of regional organisations have come
to the fore to fill the vacuum. The result has been that the elections
have begun to deliver a fractured verdict, with no single party
securing a majority of its own. The current contretemps in Bihar and
Jharkhand are a fallout of such an exigency.

The problem, however, has been compounded by several other factors.
For a start, the division of the states on the grounds of
administrative efficiency has produced smaller assemblies, with the
result that the allegiance of fewer legislators are needed to secure a
majority, thereby facilitating the process of what has come to be
known as horse-trading, or the virtual 'buying' of legislators by a
resourceful party in a search of a majority.

This unsavoury phenomenon wouldn't have assumed a menacing proportion
but for the erosion of the moral fibre of politicians. If the
legislators are zealously guarded after an election by the party
functionaries, the reason is to prevent them from being lured away by
the opposite camp with the offer of incentives, in cash or kind.

As if the degeneration of the politicians was not enough, this malady
has now spread to the speakers and governors as well, evidently
because both belong to the same political class. The latest acts of
the speaker and the governor in Goa, and of the governor in Jharkhand,
have demonstrated how their partisan role can undermine the neutrality
of their offices, thereby bringing the entire system into disrepute.

In Goa, the crisis began with the speaker trying to save the BJP
government by disqualifying a legislator whose vote might have tilted
the balance in favour of the opposition. Then, before the vote could
take effect, the governor, a Congressman, dismissed the government and
installed one led by the Congress. His tactics were so blatantly
partisan that the centre has now sought a way out by imposing
President's rule.

In Jharkhand, the role of the governor, another Congressman, has been
equally controversial, for he invited an ally of the Congress, Shibu
Soren of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, to form the government although
the tally showed that the BJP and its ally, the Janata Dal (United),
had more members on their side in the 81-member assembly.

It is obvious that none of these problems would have arisen if the
speakers and the governors acted in a genuinely non-partisan manner.
While the speaker is always a member of the ruling party, it has been
the norm till recently that, once elected, he made it a point to show
that he belonged to no party and intended to act on the merits of a
case. It is only in the last few years, however, that the speakers
have failed to hide their biases.

Their failures first became evident when they were called upon to
abjudicate on the anti-defection law, which recognized a split in a
party when one-third of its legislators decided to support another
party. But there have been cases, including one relating to Uttar
Pradesh which is now before the Supreme Court, where the speakers have
allowed less than a third of the members to defect, or have advanced
the dubious concept of a continuous defection where the members could
cross the floor in batches.

If the governors have failed to live up to their constitutional
obligations, as the events in Goa and Jharkhand have shown, the reason
is that the earlier convention about only appointing men and women of
repute, unattached to any political party, to the posts has been
gradually abandoned. Now, the Raj Bhavans, as the governors'
residences are grandiosely called, have become the sinecures of
retired or serving politicians and bureaucrats, who have been chosen
solely for their loyalty to the party in power, whether the Congress
or the BJP. And they seem to have no hesitation in flaunting their
loyalty despite the opprobrium they inevitably earn.

As it is, the election of legislators with a criminal background has
cast a shadow on Indian democracy. Now, if the speakers and governors,
too, begin to act in a partis

It may be of interest that 37 years ago I worked for a company called

We at that time worked on magnetic levitation systems for and I remember

The problem we had was actually stopping the units after we had cut the

The point I am making is the amount of time that has passed from an

Is the objection to just the depiction of the cross? Is it because
"sentiments are hurt"? If so, is that a valid ground? Don't such realities
happen in the real world? Are those protesting the film also making a
point that priests stay within their vows, or the Church re-evaluate
celibacy requirements? This case throws up many questions. FN

Catholics object to film on priestly "Sins"

BOMBAY (Reuters) - Christians in India will step up protests against the
screening of "Sins", a Bollywood film that shows a Catholic priest in a
cassock and cross having sex with a woman half his age, a religious group
said on Friday.

The film prompted an attack this week by protestors on a theatre in
Bombay, India's film capital and home to a large Catholic community. A
further protest is planned on Saturday.

Christians object to the scene mixing sex with the cross, their main
religious symbol.

"We want the objectionable scenes in the film to be deleted or the movie
be completely withdrawn," Joseph Dias, general secretary of Catholic
Secular Forum, told a news conference.

Sex scenes and nudity are often cut from films shown in India and some
films covering controversial subjects have been blocked or delayed due to
concerns about their impact.

Christians have appealed to India's president to intervene to protect the
rights of minority communities.

"Tomorrow it could be the spiritual heads of Hindus, Sikhs or Muslims who
could be targeted by an artist," Dias said.

Director Vinod Pande has said the film, showing across India since it was
released a week ago, was not meant to offend anyone.

A local court rejected an appeal by Christian groups for a stay on the
film's release.

The National Commission for Minorities said it wanted the country's film
certification authority to explain why such a film was cleared.

"We have received complaints from Christian groups," V.V. Augustine, a
member of the Commission said. "We hope to take some steps to ensure
caution is exercised in future."

Christians make up about 2 percent of the more than 1 billion people in
India. Hindus make up about 80 percent and Muslims 13 percent.

I do not believe that he is half as corrupt as all the Congress MLAs that

Dayanand Narvenkar, Dr. Willie, Luizinho Faleiro, Fransico Sardinha prior to
their becoming MLAs and ministers.
Or is it just good enough that they belong to the Congress and have
a carte blanche for fleecing Goa? I can understand your very known
disdain for the likes of Mr. Parrikar, but so far, I have believed that
Mr. Mathany Saldanha is more principled than many others that are
ministers in Goa or have been MLAs.
Rumours abound in Goa that the Congress party has pumped in crores
of rupees for dessertions. Isidore Fernandes, who was a pariah, a few

to the CBI raids now? Or is it okay for the Congress to pay off people to

[Goanet]Goa wakes up to Governor- Mr S C Jamirs rule 7/3/2005

2005-03-06 Thread godfrey gonsalves
Law makers (ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES) in Goa have been
given a deserving rest.

After the Tsunamis that have struck India's twenty
fifth tiny state - the people in Goa are wondering
whether a defamation case could be filed against the
lawmakers -- for tarnishing the fair image of Goa and
Goans by the mockery that they have resorted to since
27/1/2005 to 4/3/2005. Like the proverbial what came
first the chicken or egg there will be discussions ad
nausem on whether the BJP or the INC are to be blamed
for the mess. Atleast as per the present --- many
suscribe to the view that Mr Manohar Parrikar ex CM
should have been allowed to carry on his developmental
activities until term end 2007 but there were others
among the secularists who said "what use is
development if a "Cristao and a Konkno or Moir" cannot
walk hand in hand and there they score a point over
the BJP.

Governance has suffered worst still development works
will suffer on two counts. One if the bye-elections
are declared to the five vacant seats (the code of
conduct will come into force stopping all development
activity) and two the monsoons approach in just
another two months and no one risks development
activity as all migrant (menial ) work force desert
Goa to attend to their agricultural activities in
their home state.

Worst still economy will tend to suffer because the
introduction of Value Added Tax come the new fiscal
year April 2005 this will need a lot of cobwebs and
clatter to be cleared for smooth sailings.

This Monday, 2005 all the Ministerial cars will be
returned to the "stable" and for once Goans will be
seeing their elected representatives sans the
redlights.

But the lucky ones are those that became Chairpersons
of the various Corporations for they will continue in
office unless the Governor decides otherwise and
decide he must to ensure fair play atleast when
Presidents Rule --- with the House under suspended
animation is in vogue 4/3/2005 to 3/9/2005 (for the
time being) or revoked earlier if a stable Government
can be ensured following the results of the bye
elections --which in any case has to be held between
now and latest by the first week of June 2005 to avoid
the onset of monsoons.

Now that Mr S C Jamir (one of the 16 tribes (a Baptist
Christian ) of the North Eastern State of Nagaland
also called the "Switzerland of the East" and ex
Chief Minister of Nagaland since 1982 ) Governor will
rule the State with his aides (appointment expected in
the next 48 hrs) Goa can expect a lot from the
Governor.

He has rich experience in governance having been in
politics from the time of late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru
as a Deputy Minister in the Union Cabinet and also as
Chief Minister in the fifth Legislative Assembly of
Nagaland. He has been witness to unseating and
seating of governments like Goa has witnessed since
1990 )in his tiny state then of 40 directly elected
law makers + 4 nominated and subsequently 60 elected
lawmakers.

His state has set up in capital Kohima the
Administrative Training Institute to upgrade skills of
the bureaucracy and therefore the right thing he has
done under the Presidents rule regime is to invite the
bureaucracy to give them a "piece of his mind" as his
first step. This one single measure of work ethics
and a sensitive executive (bureaucracy) can change
overnight the lackadaisical attitude of the staff.
Here one expects the Governor to hold the leash and
strike when the ocassion arises.

The people of Goa had been witness to Presidents rule
in the past and given a choice between and elected
government and the Presidents rule -- it is
"Rashtrapati rajvott" that the masses prefer for a
tiny state like Goa.

Some of the Governors that have won the admiration of
Goans( exluding the politicians who invariably
despise the word "Presidents rule" for obvious
reasons) were late Col P S Gill in 1977 - 1981 (father
of ex Chief Election Commisioner Govt of India M S
Gill )late Dr Gopal Singh (1984 - 1989) Lt General J F
R G Jacob PVSM Retd 1998 to 1999 for they in their
conduct while in office displayed exemplary rapport
with those that they "ruled over" to earn the
sobriquet of "People's Governor"

It must be remembered too at this stage that Goans
during the Portuguse rule were accustomed to a bit of
regimentation --- the rule of law must prevail -- and
no Goan will regret this adage -- because with a bit
of regimentation comes discipline and with dicipline
less corruption and orderly conduct of public life.

Goans respect the rule and law and they expect those
in high offices to set this trend.

There is no doubt that His Excellency Mr S C Jamir who
has a self confessed love for Goa (hailing from
Nagaland which except for its climate resembles the
natural settings of much of what his home state
enjoys) will definitely address himself to the needs
of the people of Goa during this brief tenure.

But one expects Mr Jamir to display neutrality in
conduct though he may be inclined to lean a litt

[Goanet]CASTE AND COLOUR AMONG GOANS

2005-03-06 Thread Sanny Vaz
CASTE AND COLOUR AMONG GOANS.
Recently I posted an article in Konkani titled “Zathi ani Kathi Goemkaram
Modem” which appeared on Goanet, Gulf Goans eNewsletter and The Goan Forum.
I have translated the same in English as per the request of Goanet
Administrator Mr. Bosco D'Mello, and other well-wishers. I am positive
that this will give a better understanding of my article, specially to those
who can’t read Konkani.

For quite some time we have been reading the topic “GOANS & CASTE” on the
Internet and even on Herald news paper… On this particular topic many have
given their views and motives like Dr. Gilbert Lawrence, Mr. Santosh
Helekar, Mr. Basilio Monteiro, Mr. George Pinto, Mr. Cornerl DaCosta –
London, Mr. Melvyn Misquita, Fr. Ambrose Pinto – New Delhi, Mr. Dom Martin
and many others are discussing just Goans and Caste.

These differences of Caste and Creed not only exist in Goa but all over
India, which even our Indian Govt. has turned a deaf ear. In states such as
Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Andra Pradesh, Kerala etc. lot of heinous
acts take place which don’t even appear in our media reports, but there are
a few Organizations who strive hard to fight this evil and give a better
life to the victims.

In Goa Casteism still exist to the present time, but the debate on the
internet doesn’t say
anything of vital importance, such as, Why do we have these differences
among us? Or how can we put an end to this? None wants to discuss this. I
liked the writing of Mr. Cornel DaCosta (London based) but more than that of
“MR. DOM MARTIN” who at least mentioned one important point related to
Goans in his comment: “Lower Caste boy MARRYING a Bhatkar’s daughter”.

In Goa during the reign of Portuguese our Bhatkar (Landlords), Bamon
(Brahmins) and Chaddi considered themselves as LORDS, who ruled over the
tenants strenuously and kept them strangled for quite a while. They even
deprived proper education for their tenants children, today few know these
facts and those who do know are relaxing in a numb state and criticizing the
follies of others. This new generation has no knowledge of the past
(Portuguese reign) and its very important that we bring to their attention
the facts and figures concerning the TYRANNY of these so called LORDS.
Because among us there will be many whose parents might have been the
victims of these tyrants, whose parents might have been the victims of
torture and abusive insults etc…. But they boldly faced it just for the sake
of their children, to give them proper education and a place of dignity and
honor in this society which is filled with hatred that we live in… Today
many children of these same tenants are seen holding good posts and white
collar jobs, but do they have any idea of what their parents went through
for what they are today? I don’t think so.

During the reign of Portugez Landlords and Brahmins utilized Caste system
vigorously as a form of oppression, and even today it still exists but with
less Ferocity. The reason is today everyone has basic or advanced
qualifications…. During their hay days these Landlords and Brahmins
treacherously squeezed Gavdho (Kunbi) people, they even forged false
documents and inherited huge properties of these Gavdho people, cause they
did not even have basic education to sign their own name, which was added
advantage to the literate tyrants…. In addition to this these Landlords and
Brahmins employed / enslaved the daughters of their tenants in their own
homes as servants (Kiryadam) who suffered lot of torture and abuse, but none
could utter a word against them, because they were highly influential with
the police officials. The tenants daughters even gave illicit birth to
their children who were called Mistis (Mix-breed). My friends is this the
same thing you all wish to discuss on the Internet?

In all of the states in India Caste known as “Dalit” is considered to be the
lowest among all, the same fate is in Goa, Madho (MARR) this caste is
considered lowest of all, who ever he may be regardless of Caste, Creed or
Religion, after all he is a human with bones / flesh & blood, a
creation of the Highest… Fr. Ambrose Pinto a Jesuit Priest who was in
Banglore for a while and is now based in New-Delhi was interviewed by Mr.
Yoginder Sikand concerning this same topic of Caste, his question was “Why
do Castes exist among Christians?” and this is what Fr. Ambrose replied to
him. "According to the preaching’s of the Holy Bible, God made man with his
own features, but did not create Caste and Creed among men, he further
mentioned that
Jesus too was against this, because he could not tolerate the oppression of
the poor, he further told that Jesus was Crucified without mercy because he
always opposed the oppressors". Fr. Ambrose advises us all that we won’t be
able to walk in the footsteps of Jesus until and unless we strongly strive
to oppose the oppressors and stop this hatred an

Outsourcing firms battle to keep staff

By Rosemary Arackaparambil
BOMBAY (Reuters) - Indian back-office firms face a growing challenge
holding on to employees, even as they hire tens of thousands every
quarter.

Some firms say they need to replace up to half their people every year.
Call centres, which snap up English-speaking youngsters with the gift of
the gab, are the worst hit, and they account for nearly 40 percent of
back-office jobs in the country.

"It is a major problem," said Jerry Rao, chairman of back-office and IT
services firm MphasiS BFL Ltd.

Staff tend to account for half of a back-office operation's costs,
according to research firm Evalueserve, and the battle for talent has led
to a 10-15 percent rise in employee salaries.

Recruitment and training makes up 3 percent of the overall per employee
cost of about $13,000 per year, including administration and telecoms
costs, according to Evalueserve.

But the really damaging cost is the lost business for companies who cannot
fill key jobs quickly enough. Many face a shortage of mid-level manpower
to manage their rapid growth as they lure clients with promises of 40 to
50 percent cost savings.

As the industry clocks up 50 percent-plus growth, demand for quality
personnel is outstripping supply. Employees often hop to new jobs for
slightly more money, and many do not view back-office work as a career.

FIGHTING ATTRITION
Companies provide free transport, subsidised meals and housing to retain
staff, and try to enliven the environment with musical entertainment, yoga
classes and costume contests.

But that is not always enough.
Spectramind, the back-office arm of India's third-largest software
services company, Wipro Ltd., reported a 90 percent annualised attrition
rate at the end of December.

"The high attrition rates we have had really limited our ability to
continue to add people once we get to the scale and range we are in,"
Wipro Vice-Chairman Vivek Paul said, predicting slowing growth for the
division in the current quarter.

India's business process outsourcing sector has 400 players, though the
top 20 account for nearly half the sector's revenue, seen touching $5.7
billion this year.

The industry is on track to employ 350,000 people by the end of March, up
from 253,500 a year earlier. With international businesses increasing
call-centre and other back-office operations in India, the industry is
expected to need a million people by March 2008.

But B. Sudhakar, chief operating officer at PeopleOne Consulting, says the
pool of good candidates -- particularly for call centres -- is limited.

"Not everyone who speaks English has accent-free diction, so very few are
'camera-ready'," he said.

NEW BUSINESS MODEL WANTED
Experts say the way out is to move up the value chain by expanding from
voice-based business to more transaction-based business, where employees
may see better career opportunities.

The National Association of Software and Service companies estimates that
technical support, accounts management, payroll and benefits services are
areas with high growth potential.

Firms are also beginning to take on more "knowledge-oriented" jobs such as
equity research and data mining, which may interest recruits more, but
they form just a fraction of the industry now.

Gautam Sinha, chief executive of Bangalore recruitment firm TVA Infotech
suggests that outsourcing firms centred around Bangalore, Bombay and Delhi
should fan out to other cities, where expectations are lower and employees
are less opportunistic.

He said the industry needed to expand tie-ups with schools and offer
part-time professional courses and subsidised tuition fees and recommended
companies send veterans to campuses to tell students about potential
career prospects, since many enter the industry for the easy money and
then leave after a few years.

"People also move out when they realise this is not the career they
wanted, or they want to get more education," said K. Thiagarajan, chief
operating officer at Hinduja TMT Ltd..

Sara Quinny, 23, quit her job two months ago after 2-1/2 years of phoning
Americans about their overdue credit card payments.

"It was my first job interview, I got it and it was pretty exciting at
first. But I ended up doing the same thing every day. Just sitting there
for nine hours and making calls all the time," said Quinny, who said she'd
wanted to join the airline industry when she finished college.

[Goanet]Re-Catholic's object to the film on Priestly "Sins"

Original Quote:-
Christians have appealed to India's president to intervene to protect the
rights of minority communities.

"Tomorrow it could be the spiritual heads of Hindus, Sikhs or Muslims who
could be targeted by an artist," Dias said.

Director Vinod Pande has said the film, showing across India since it was
released a week ago, was not meant to offend anyone.

Mr. Fredrick you are absolutely right but don't you think that we have just
risen from our sleep, such scenes and acts have been shown so many times,
and no one botherd to raise a question concerning this matter, on the other
hand if the same same film was based on a Hindu Pandit what would have been
the fate? The Director itself is a Hindu and he won't let his keen down,
like he said the film was not meant to offend anyone, its cheap talk, among
Hindus its there within them to keep concubines (Kolvontam) but he won't
disgrace his religion.

Every where Christianity is taken for granted, when the Hindus and Muslims
discuss religious topics the only religion they compare is Christianity,
cause they don't know much about other religions, but our superiors too just
listen to their gosip and sit numb, but now I feel they have felt the pain.

RESPONSE: Quote After the Meta Strips campaign, the people elected an
environmentalist to the Assembly believing that he would speak out and
influence decision making, particularly on environmental issues. This
initiative of the people however, has not borne fruit since the
representative in question has now become a cog in the wheel of the
establishment and remains inexplicably silent on all environmental and
other issues that will decided the future direction of the state.

I take it that the people elected Mathany Saldanha who now has the
gall to ask them to bear with him! As I wrote in a previous post he is
no better than the rest of them - they will all sell their mothers if
need be.

RESPONSE: These goondas are not Goans - since they do not speak
Konkani - they have been imported to bolster up the BJP Party in Goa.
As I have written previously, whether they are in power or out, Goa
and Goans will pay a heavy price until and unless we eliminate the
Communalists once and for all. The Congress party have another bite at
the cherry, should they fail Goans again then we are headed up the
Swanee! All we can hope and pray, is that the Congress wallahs are not
readying themselves to fill their boots once more. Perhaps permanent
President's Rule would be a good thing.

[Goanet]Fwd: a cross

2005-03-06 Thread FERNANDO DO REGO
From: Cynthia Fernandes
Sent: Thursday, March 03, 2005 7:46 PM

A young man was at the end of his rope, seeing no way out, he dropped
to his knees in prayer "Lord, I can't go on," he said.
"I have too heavy a cross to bear."

The Lord replied, "My son, if you can't bear its weight,
just place your cross inside this room. Then, open that
other door and pick out any cross you wish."

The man was filled with relief and said,
"Thank you Lord," and he did as he was told.

  Upon entering the other room, he saw many crosses;
some so large the tops were not visible. Then,
he spotted a tiny cross leaning against a far wall.

"I'd like that one, Lord," he whispered.

The Lord replied, "My son, that is the cross you just brought in."

When life's problems seem overwhelming, it helps to look around
and see what other people are coping with. You may consider
yourself far more fortunate than you imagined.

  YOUR CROSS
  Whatever your cross
  Whatever your pain
  There will always be sunshine
  After the rain
  Perhaps you may stumble
  Perhaps even fall
  But God's always there
To help you through it all.

Funny how you can send a thousand "jokes" through e-mail and they
spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the
Lord, people think twice about passing it on. Funny, isn't it, when you
go
to forward this message, how many on your buddy list will not receive
it because you're not sure they believe in anything?

  Funny? No!
  Sad, and thought-provoking...
May God give you the strength and courage to pass
this along to everyone on your email buddy list...

  I JUST DID!

[Goanet]A few crores for supporting the Congress

2005-03-06 Thread ralph rau
Matanhy's Press Note excerpt

" It is not possible for me to now jump onto the Congress bandwagon for the
sake of ministership and a few crores in hand."

In the interest of safeguarding our country from the carpetbaggers it is
Matanhy's duty to expose exactly who in the Congress offered him exactly how
much for his support. The Indian public would also dearly love to know in what
form this price was to be paid. Was it in a suitcase or a transfer to an
offshore account. Did Matanhy care to tape-record the conversation on his
answering machine or mobile phone. The truth must be exposed and the Supreme
Court must open a hearing into these sordid affairs that result in the nation
being dragged down to the depths of depravity that our leaders wallow in.

[Goanet]Flaviano needs to read history again.

2005-03-06 Thread karla
To,
The Editor,
Panaji-Goa.
Sir,
This has reference to the the one and quarter page lead story published in
the PANORAMA of the Navhind Times dated 06 March,2005. The rather lengthy
piece, entitled " In Freedom Struggle, Goans Fought as Indians", written by
an apologetic for the Parrikar Administration's seedy VCD entitled GOA
FREEDOM STRUGGLE tries vainly to make out a case against the critics of
this bastardization of Goa's history by appealing to the patriotic emotions
which the author obviously does not posses although drawing a Freedom
Fighter's pension. Which true patriot would like to cause a schism between
communities and religions in independent, secular India and a liberated Goa?
Only RSS members, sympathisers and cronies are capable of dividing India
well after the British, Portuguese and French colonialists have left our
land. Perhaps Flaviano is justifying the special pension of Rs.10,000/-
given by the Parrikar-led dispensation to three senior journalists, two of
whom were part of the infamous "Scrutinizing Committee" for the VCD.

How well Flaviano Dias knows his history can be seen in the sentence that
begins, " In Paris, his comrades were Ho Chi Minh of INDONESIA, Chou en
Lai". This is all the more glaring because Flaviano Dias claims to
be a Marxist. Even Geography would help Flaviano to understand this part of
history. Ho Chi Minh City is the new name of Saigon in VIETNAM. Instead of
enjoying the BJP hospitality and largesse, perhaps Flaviano should visit the
'Hanoi Hilton' to refresh his memory.

Flaviano is admittedly an agnostic. I accept that he does not believe in God
or the creation of Adam and Eve. That does not give him the right to create
history. Flaviano is an agnostic, TB Cunha was an atheist. Both of them were
born to catholic parents, were baptised as infants and confirmed as catholic
club members by the time they were a dozen years old. Catholicism, like
Hinduism, is a club that is too large to administer and where most members
do not even know the club constitution. No one really knows the membership
status, unless one actually insists on publicising one's resignation as TB
Cunha did openly and Flaviano does when asked. By refering to Tristao
Braganza Cunha's[ he was quoted by Bevinda Collaco as calling him "Cristao"
Braganza Cunha on the eve of the Gomant Vishwa Sammelan in January] burial
in the Scottish cemetery, he cannot make out a case for his burial with
Catholic rites. He can, however, rest assured that he could be buried in the
cemetery at Santa Inez, albeit in the Corporation of the City of Panaji
owned section. The principle is simple, when one voluntarily renounces one's
life membership of a club, one cannot participate in the General Body
meeting. One may, however, drink at the club's bar as a guest.

It is not understood why Flaviano, an agnostic like L.K.Advani, is mixing
religion with patriotism in a country that we refer to as our "matrabhumi"
[Motherland] and not as "patria"[Fatherland]. At best, we can be matriotic.
Also, Flaviano disputes Agnelo Castro's statement " All fought freedom
struggle as Goans" made in the context of efforts by pseudo-patriots[
including Flaviano] to capitalise on the essay of TB Cunha to label
catholics as traitors, while writing "There were several Goans and other
Indian patriots" five paragraphs later. If Flaviano is a true
matriot/patriot, let him reimburse/refund the Freedom Fighters pension that
he has collected all this while [in addition to his salary he earned from
PTI that should have sufficed for his needs] and the Parrikar-dispensation
dole. Who seeks compensation for helping one's own mother in time of need?
If India is Flaviano's matrabhumi, his Motherland, why is he seeking and
receiving a pension for doing what a proud son of the soil should do without
expecting anything in return?? Why preach patriotism while receiving
compensation like a petty mercenary? Does Flaviano have the answers?

Mercenaries and the RSS make strange bedfellows. They never fight for
anything except their own benefit, for which they fight
vociferously.

Viva Goa. Jai Hind.
Miguel Braganza
Mapusa-Goa.

Australian Grand Prix
After qualifying 12th and 14th respectively following
this morning’s final qualifying session, the first
under the new “aggregate” system, Narain Karthikeyan
and Tiago Monteiro gave a strong drive in today’s
Albert Park race to bring their Jordan Toyota EJ15s
home in 15th and 16th place at the rookies’ first
Formula One Grand Prix.

NARAIN KARTHIKEYAN (EJ15/02) 15th
“I had a very bad start and then stayed behind
Monteiro for a while. After the first pit stop, I
pushed a lot and it was a trouble-free race. It is
very good to finish the first Grand Prix of the season
and I am looking forward to the next race, even though
the weather conditions will be much warmer and humid.”

TIAGO MONTEIRO (EJ15/03) 16 th
“The goal was to finish the race and this is what we
managed to achieve. We are not the only team
apparently, as all the cars seemed pretty reliable. As
I said during the weekend, we need to finish races and
collect as much information as possible. There are so
many things I have learnt today and that is the most
important. For the next race, I would like to make
some changes to my seat position and my seat belt. I
had a great start but then I lost a lot of time when
people were overtaking me so I have to work on that
but otherwise I am very happy to have finished the
race.”

TREVOR CARLIN - SPORTING DIRECTOR
“We are very glad we finished the year’s first Grand
Prix. We got both cars to the finish and that is an
achievement, even though it would have been nice to
finish a bit higher up the results table. Now we are
looking forward to going to Malaysia and if possible
improving the car a little bit.”

COLIN KOLLES - TEAM PRINCIPAL & MANAGING DIRECTOR

the end - so I am very happy that they finished the
race in the same conditions they started in and that
there were no nasty surprises. ”

Renault reigns in F1's new era

THE 10th Australian Grand Prix ushered in a new
Formula One era as a red-hot Giancarlo Fisichella
screamed to his first Albert Park victory and
home-grown hero Mark Webber stamped himself a
legitimate championship threat.

The Italian seemed invincible yesterday, leading from
start to finish after securing pole position in two
faultless qualifying sessions.

He completed the 57 laps of the 5.3km circuit in
1hr24min17.336sec, reaching a sizzling top of 310km/h
in his blue Renault.

It was the second grand prix win for Fisichella, whose

[Goanet]Re: Magnetic Levitation

If magnetic levitation is 7 decades old, then it took over 30 years just to
reach the point you spoke about. It has taken over 30 years since then to
where first-mover China is now with the technology. Soon maybe the rapid
growth phase will kick in with maglev routes sprouting up "all over the
place". Interesting.

I heartily agree with David re toilets. For some
reason, toilets in India (in general) are the most
dismal of places, whether it be in a private home or a
public building.

The only reasonable toilet I have visited so far in
the Indian public buildings is the domestic airport at
Santa Cruz (or whatever it is called now). The current
one at Dabolim, which I visited last in Aug 2003, was
not a visit to be remembered. And the toilets ought to
be catered both for the western-style (sitting) as
well for the India-style (squatting) - and each type
marked on the respective doors (as at the Changi
airport at Singapore).

Modern methods of cleaning the airport floors ought to
be carried out, not necessarily using mechanical
devices - one being using a large v-fronted dry mop as
is used at some shopping centres in Melbourne - rather
than the backbreaking broomstick which raises dust.

Other parts of the infrastructure that require to be
upgraded, in addition to what David has mentioned are
a good clean restaurant (emphasis on clean) supplying
tea or coffee to the customer's requirements (e.g.
with/without milk or sugar), shops selling a good
range of reading material and comfortable chairs to
await delayed departures, etc not only in the check-in
lounge, but also in the departure lounge.

Cheers,

Gabriel de Figueiredo.
