Re: [Goanet]Re: Women priests
--- George Pinto [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: While it is true there are differences between men and women, the justification for barring women from being priests is not based on anything more than sexism. Regardless of what fanciful reasons are given, hiding behind the theological reasons is the belief that women are second-class and not smart enough or good enough to be priests. That's the unfortunate message of the Catholic Church. Regards, George Hi George, My opinion, which may be flawed, is that there are places and professions which are divided on basis of sex for practical reasons, and one cannot simply state that this is sexism. Funny though, more we go towards the equality of the sexes, the more there are women-only lounges, women-only common rooms, women-only gyms, women-only swimming-pools, etc. Also, in 99% (statistics not proven) of divorce cases, it appears that custody of the children go the woman. I wonder why. Is that because in the perceived equality, there are inequalities? On the other hand, is this reverse-sexism? Men-only clubs have been wiped out. Even in lawn-bowling clubs of Melbourne, in spite of there being a women-only lawns club to cater for her, a woman took a men's lawn-bowling club to court to allow her to participate, and she won. Not that I am a member of any such club, or a contra-feminist, but only to show that there seems to be an imbalance, taking this men/women thing too far. I do appreciate the stand of the Catholic Church. It has nothing to do with considering women as inferior or not smart enough to priests. It has all to do with the mental, physiological makeup, or, to put it in other words, with the conceptual differences in ways men and women think and do (hence the courts' tendencies to give custodial rights of the children to the mother). If you are married, you probably already know that what a woman says is not exactly what a man understands, and vice-versa ;-)). Regards, Gabriel de Figueiredo. Melbourne - Australia. [Goanet]Re: Correcting Goa's politics
Hello Cajetan Rego, I take it your commentary on Goanet on this subject is on account of your love for Goa not for Mr. Parrikar and the BJP. I should make it clear that I am an expat Goan that spent a month in Goa in Dec/Jan 2005. So I certainly do not know everything that you may know about Goa and Goan politicians. However when it comes to politicians (of all hues), I am a cynic!! Webster Dictionary describes CYNIC: a faultfinding captious critic; especially : one who believes that human conduct is motivated wholly by self- interest With that, I'd like to dissect your commentary! CR: In January 2005,though things were not completely perfect, there was no crisis in the state. Goa ranked as the No.1 state in India. RESPONSE: # 1 in Jan 2005?? I read the Jan 2005 issue of India Today. It was more like - Goa ?? Where is that place? What tangible variables were used in arriving at a declaration of # 1 state in India as per your claim?? CR: The Parrikar Government had received praises for the efficient organization of the IFFI. RESPONSE: Praises from whom ? Goans, Ponjekars ?? CR: Goa is among the top tourist destinations in the world. RESPONSE: Where did you read that? What kind of tourist? The bargain-hunter? Are you counting the Indian tourists too? What kind of tourism do we want for our Goa - Environmentally Unfriendly ?? CR: There is surplus electricity. (Paragraph 1) CR: They could not provide 24 hours water and power supply to the entire state. (Last paragraph) RESPONSE: Make up your mindDid Mr. Parrikar's government meet the electricity requirements of Goa and Goans?? He was in power for over 4 years. CR: A stable and efficient administration had led industries to look at Goa as an investment destination. Wipro and Patni were all set to start their units in Goa. RESPONSE: Is that because Mr. Parrikar had promised these investors a tax-free holiday for 5 years, 10 years or for life ?? CR: The River Princess was about to be removed. RESPONSE: About to be removed ?? When did the River Princess run aground ? How many years did it take and how many tenders were floated to move the ill-fated ship? How many cries from the local community did Mr. Parrikar ignore?? Why did Mickey Pacheco's claim to move the ship within 2 weeks after becoming a minister come to nought?? CR: There were plans of an International airport. RESPONSE: Did Mr. Parrikar leave with the plans ?? All indications from federal authorities indicate that Mopa will eventually happen whether the South Goan hoteliers like it or not. CR: The sky bus was successfully tested. RESPONSE: Success is tangible - we can use the word success when it starts to benefit the common man - like the Konkan Railway! CR: Panjim now looks like a European city. RESPONSE: Panjim always was a European city - ask any Ponjekarnever mind the fact that people in Panjim got sick with water contaminated with sewage a little over a year ago. CR: Goa has the smooth roads rarely to be found in India. RESPONSE: It looks like you live on Dayanand Bandodkar Marg and never left Panjim. Have you taken the road from 18th June Road to Miramar via St. Inez church?? Have you driven/riden either of the Mandovi bridges - where two- wheelers have to almost stop at every joint in the bridge? They act more like speed-breakers. Why was the Patto bridge under repair Jan 2005? Immediately after the IFFI...I won't mention sections of NH 17 as that could be under the federal government's jurisdiction. CR: There is no communal tension. RESPONSE: Mosque in Soccoro Porvorim was torched. Bombs in/near Vasco church. The religious stone issue in Altinho. None of these raised communal tensions?? CR: Goa University has tied up with the prestigious IITs. RESPONSE: What does that mean for the common man or a Goa University students? The GU graduates thus far were below par ?? CR: Government schools in Goa have been upgraded. RESPONSE: Good for those kids albeit I don't know what you mean by upgraded. I hope upgraded Government schools will lead to better success rates at Grades 10 and 12. CR: And all this fast track development had been achieved in four years' time under the leadership of a well-educated and sincere politician, Manohar Parrikar. RESPONSE: I really don't care if the leadership is well-educated or un- dressed. All this fast track development has to be held accountable to the citizens of Goa - this is their money after all!! If money has been overspent Goans will be paying for the same for years to come in higher taxes/loans. CR: Just when, the people of Goa thought they had a stable and progressive government, Parrikar was tempted to dismiss a corrupt minister. This minister had always been using the government machinery at his own pleasure. He was indeed a filmi 'goonda'. Parrikar had inducted him in the government because he had no other option when he came to power. RESPONSE: So Mr. Parrikar was as

On Apr 10, 2005 3:23 PM, Cajetan Rego [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:.. RESPONSE: I congratulate you, Cajetan Rego for responding and also for posting your residency. We can now proceed to a dialogue hopefully. - I don't disagree when people say that govt jobs were given to party cadres. But did this not happen during the congress rule? And do you think it will not happen if any other party(MGP, UGDP,...) comes to power? RESPONSE: I agree with you that it is quite conceivable that these things, did also happen when the Congress Party were in power - I shall also further add that the Congress party do feather their own nests. I ask you though, did the Congress party discriminate on the lines of ones beliefs (faith) or whether it did not matter what faith one belonged to so long as they subscribed to the Congress Party ? - Don't you realize that things we complain about, happened even during the congress rule? Don't you remember that we complained about the same things during the congress rule? Don't you see the development that has happened in Goa? Should we elect the non-BJP parties and let Goa plunge into instability out of their perennial infighting? Should we let Goa have a new CM every 6 months and get branded as a politically instable state so that no industry finds us attractive enough to invest in? It is true that there are problems in the state as regards sanitation, power supply, lack of jobs, etc. But should we not give the BJP a chance to solve them? Do we expect them to get rid of problems in the four years of their rule? Think, would Goa have been branded as India's number one state if the Parrikar govt had been a bad choice? Response: One should not jump the gun, ask your self the simple question - at what cost was all that achieved ? One sees new roads and IFFI and glamour; who picked up the bill for all this? How long into the future will the Goan tax payer be burdened with all these extravagant forays? Are you and are Goans prepared to forgo their freedom as far as Religious rights go, for the sake of progress? Saffronisation: Parrikar did not put all of us in a gas chamber and blow us up. Did he not have Christians in his ministry? The problem is with the way we see things. If a Christian officer gets replaced by a Hindu for any reason, it gets branded as an attempt to 'saffronise' the state. Nobody worries about the actual reason why the officer had to be replaced. If somebody comes out with a VCD showing anything anti-Christian, even though it is history and irrelevant in the present context, it is saffronisation. When Hindu mythological floats were shown at the carnival, instead of counting it as a display of communal harmony, somebody wrote in a local newspaper calling it saffronisation. When are we going to mature? RESPONSE: I put it to you that you are being naive, Parrikar did have Catholics in his Government but could he have continued in Government without these Catholics stamping their approval? Moreover if the Catholics were so happy and content i.e. Monserate, who swore allegiance to Parrikar what made him change his mind? Did the Catholics support Parrikar only as long as their bottom line interests were met? If so why did Parrikar pander to them When we had an IIT engineer as our CM, we had too many expectations out of him. Unfortunately he could not live up to all of them in four years. However considering all the progress Goa made, I think he deserves another chance. At the time of elections, should we refrain from voting thinking that all are equaly bad? It is again a choice, we have to make and choose the best among the rest. I have justified why I consider the Parrikar-led govt to be my choice in my posting: RESPONSE: What if any response, will you have, once and if Parrikar gets into office again and disenfranchises the Catholic Goans? What about the law and order situation - do you condone the vandalism of the street names in Panjim as well as the attack on the Hotel in Mapusa? I am not aware but did these sort of deviant actions take place when the Congress were in power? I am well aware of the Congress short falls and of their taking care of themselves first but at least they did not play the religious divide card! http://www.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet/2005-April/026572.html and if anyone disagrees, I request them to justify their disagreement before stamping abuses. RESPONSE: I don't know who abused you, as far as I am concerned, I believe my post was above board and intended to elicit a response from you or any other BJP supporter. I have never stated that I am for a Catholic to be in charge. In fact if any one has read my past postings my choice for the CM would be the Hindu Goan from your Constituency. What I and I guess a lot of Goans fear is that the Catholic Goans will be disenfranchised; the Catholics will not take it lying down
[Goanet]Where is all the milk going?
NO WATER - NO MILK FOR PORVORIM One might be led to believe that shortage of water is the only major problem facing the people of Porvrim every summer. This is not so. Water which is essential for life is the uppermost priority on everyone's mind. But the essential food for children which is milk also is a scarce commodity every summer. The booth manangers of the Goa Dairy Coop. have a tough time rationing the milk which is in short supply. Opportunists also use this occassion to make a fast buck. Other brands of milk from neighbouring States are now in demand. No one has certified the quality of this milk. Year after year this problem continues. A startling fact I bumped upon is that in the last one year the Goa government has incurred an expenditure of Rupees 2 crores 19 lakhs on subsidies to farmers under the Kamdhenu scheme for procurement of milch animals. So where is all this milk going? Unconfirmed reports have it that in several cases no animals were procured, whereas in others ordinary animals were procured while claims were settled for hybrid animals. While the PWD officials are accused of promoting tanker culture the Goa, Dairy officials seem to be promoting other brands of milk from neighbouring states by creating shortages. So where has all the boasting of good and efficient governance in the last 4 years brought us to? Nothing seems to have changed on the ground. In fact it is getting worse. soter d'souza porvorim

[Goanet]BOOK REVIEW: The Sixth Night reviewed by Lino Leitao
Of interest to readers of Goan literature will be a review of the novel The Sixth Night by Silviano Barbosa written by Lino Leitao based in Montreal which appeared in the April issue of Goa Today : Book Review The Sixth Night A novel by Silviano C. Barbosa Review by Lino Leitao, Author of the novel The Gift of the Holy Cross THE SIXTH NIGHT by Silviano C. Barbosa Goa Raj Books Toronto, Canada. pp 314, Hard Cover, December 2004 US$ 20 What's the Sixth Night, or Sottvi Raat? It's an old Goan belief, which the author expresses in a couplet down below: No matter how hard you try No matter what you do What is written on your Sixth Night Will always come true Silviano Barbosa, the author, weaves a very fascinating narrative around this old Goan belief, exposing the social mores based on caste iniquities and servile mental attitudes implanted to the very core of the Goan psyche by the feudal and colonial hierarchies during that period of Goa's history. The story revolves around Linda Antonieta Cardoso, born to Joanita Dias of Navelim and Mário Cardoso of Cuncolim on the twenty-seven October 1944. She is born in the Shudra caste, the lowest caste in the Goan caste structure, and her ancestors were toddy tappers. As one goes reading the novel, it appears, that Sottvi, the Goddess of the Sixth Night, inscribed an exceptional future in Linda's destiny. Sottvi endowed her with a gift of intellectual curiosity, giving her a strong will to fight against the prejudices that kept humans in subservient oppression in the society that she was born in. Linda's consciousness awakens to the injustices of the caste system, for the first time, when she was about nine years old. It happened in her village Church. She had gone with her mother Joanita to the Passion Service, and they were lucky to have seats in the pew at the back. But when an upper caste woman who had arrived late to the services, orders them to vacate the seats because they are of lower caste, and that the seats be given to her, Linda rebels and fights for her rights, creating a commotion in the Church. Much later on, when Linda was a student at Liceu Nacional Afonso de Albuquerque - Portuguese High School, in Panjim, the fellow students, who came from the Goan elite class and some from Portuguese Europeans, looked down upon her because she didn't belong to their social status. She was just a plain village girl. The snobbish attitudes of her fellow students hurt her. She fought them by coming at the top of her class, thereby demonstrating that she was not only intellectually superior to them but a better human being. A critical reader will come across some impetuous assertions in the narrative, which oftentimes, aren't historically appropriate, and the characters that abound in the novel don't voice them. They come as viewpoints or observations from the author, impeding not only the flow of the narrative but damaging the literary quality of the novel. An example: The majority of the ordinary Catholic people of Goa never had any trouble with the Portuguese, except the lack of influence and power. They did not care who ruled Goa as long as they were happy. Currently, they were happy. (p 207). The above statement is a biased statement and the author should have known better. The Goan populace irrespective of their religious affiliations lived in secular harmony. By stereotyping 'the ordinary Catholic people of Goa', the author is adding fuel to the fire. The Goan populace from all sectors worked very hard to earn a meagre living and if they looked contented, it was because they were kept ignorant of their fundamental rights. Catholic intellectuals like: Loyolas of Orlim, Menezes Bragança, Roque Correia Afonso, Tristão da Cunha, Francisco Candido de Loyola and Dr Julião Menezes were the pioneers of Civil Rights Movenent in Goa, and I am sure that the author is aware of this fact. Ignoring such flaws, we pursue the romance of Linda and Carlos Soares, a Portuguese bureaucrat, who was an attaché to the Governor's Colonial Office in Panjim. Fate throws a lot of insurmountable hurdles on their way, making their union almost impossible. But in the end, purity of feelings and true love overcomes them all, and the couple gets married not in Goa, nor in Portugal, but in St Michael's Cathedral in Toronto. You and I may not believe it, but Joanita, the mother of Linda, who came all the way from Goa to attend the wedding of her daughter, is certainly convinced that the Sottvi, the Goddess of the Sixth Night, inscribed the incomparable future of her daughter on that auspicious sixth night of her birth. I enjoyed reading The Sixth Night. Lino Leitão - author of The Gift of the Holy Cross. The novel can be ordered from: [EMAIL

Its vote share has been plunging over the last few elections. The leaders will not learn a lesson and there seems to be no sincere initiative in taking corrective steps to get their act together. During the Congress regime life was shinning for the leaders and their families. The same is under the BJP rule. When will the world shine for the common man. When will the masses be able to have a feel of the feel good factor? This chaos within the Congress party is not limited to the Goa unit. The problem is chronic and has plagued the party from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. A close look at the Congress in almost any state reveals the same sorry state of affairs. A party ridden by factionalism, indiscipline, arrogance, with leaders having selfish and vested interests. Across India we have seen that instead of fighting the BJP the Congress has been fighting the Congress itself, something the Congressmen have excelled in. Unless the Congress across India takes immediate steps to remedy the situation the party may soon be totally wiped out from the political landscape of this country. As a first step at the national level there must be immediate and concerted efforts to bring the NCP, National Trinamool Congress and the other break away parties back to the parent party fold. Speak to any secular Goan on the street and he will tell you that the only hope for the Congress is if the present leaders are mercilessly hounded out and replaced by fresh young blood to rejuvenate and give the party a new look and the much needed impetus. This is a suggestion the Congress should seriously consider. Otherwise any cosmetic efforts to prop up Congress will not halt its continuing decline. It may not be possible to scrap all the liability prone senior leaders in one go, so it could be done in two or three phases with the more malignant cancers to the Congress axed in the first round. People like Francisco Sardinha, Pratapsing Rane and Harish Zantye should definitely be the first to be sent out to the pastures. In Goa 13 out of the 16 Congress MLAs have officially demanded that Mr.Pratapsingh Rane be removed as Congress Legislative Party leader. The Congress High Command has just refused to budge. What democracy can the party brag about. At a Congress brainstorming session at Kesarval recently, I had asked the party central leaders Ashwini Kumar and Murli Bhandare as to how Mr. Pratasingh Rane as Leader of Opposition was enjoying with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar's blessings the coveted post of Chairman of Kala Academy and Mrs. Rane as Chairman of Bal Bhavan. The Congress leaders in typical Congress style assured the people gathered that they would take a serious look into the matter. Nothing has happened and will ever happen. This issue will only be resolved the day Pratapsingh Rane joins the BJP, the place where his heart and soul really is and officially longs to be. The Congress in Goa lacks an effective organizational wing. The recently appointed Intellectual cell (Vichar vibhag) ably headed by Adv. Uday Bhembre is a step in the right direction. Its various other cells are so very dormant and inactive. One can only presume that all these cells comprise of only white blood corpuscles. The party cannot afford to have part time Congressmen with senior leaders openly flirting around with other parties at odd hours of the day. There is no loyalty by Congressmen to the Congress party. You cannot wake up as a Congressman and go to bed as a BJP. We saw it so blatantly in the just concluded Lok Sabha elections. Some of the Congress MLA=92s worked openly against the NCP- Congress alliance candidate, others worked clandestinely against the alliance candidate. Some worked partially for the alliance candidate and shared the other half of the loyalty with the BJP. And there were those few MLAs who just sat home while the Congress -NCP alliance candidate had to be content with the work of only those few Congress MLAs who worked whole heartedly. In a way they all wanted to give Dr Wilfred De Sousa a taste of his own medicine. The Congress leaders have plundered and looted Goa. How otherwise could Fransisco Sardinha, Ravi Naik and others become so rich only after joining politics? They have become financially so obese while their party's political base has been sinking and shrinking. In the Congress party the tales of rags to riches are

Ten best routes for the BJP to ascend (again) to power in Goa: Till date, persons trying to understand the situation from a distance (including from the other parts of India) are perplexed as to how the BJP came to power in Goa, of all states. To do so, they didn't have to win. They just needed to ensure that their rivals lost. This, they did. And how! It is to the credit of Goa and Goans that the BJP largely failed to polarise the population along communal lines. But try, it did. And it did work so very hard! Readers who go by the outpourings of the English-language newspapers miss the relevance of the vernacular papers and their grip over the thinking, biases and psyche of large sections of the Goan populace. This media, together with others who were obliged in various ways to the ousted party (including sections of the audio-visual media) have effectively continued to play a blatant BJP game. There are a number of strategies that the BJP has been perfecting: * Find more Wilfred de Souzas and Francisco Sardinhas. Overambition reigns. * Prop up other smaller parties, that talk an anti-BJP lingo; split votes. * First decimate the MGP, then Congress, then your UGDP allies. Once again? * Make further appeals to religion. (Parrikar was complaining to local TV in end-March that not more than 10-20% Catholics vote for the BJP.) * The bureaucracy will help; so will the police. * Find allies, including opinion-makers, in the most unlikely of places. * Manipulate the media (journo circles talk about reports that the BJP is setting up its own Marathi paper, the paper stoutly denies its BJP link, though some journalists who played a very crucial role in promoting the BJP agenda during its role in Goa are also linked with it) * Win the propaganda-war with we-are-bad-but-Congress-is-worse arguments. * Fragment the Opposition. Many, including Congressmen, are ready to oblige. * Prop up bogus candidates in the fray, confuse the electorate. This works. * Push for a polarisation, and hope the numbers work. [Goanet]Re: Correcting Goa's politics
I don't disagree when people say that govt jobs were given to party cadres. But did this not happen during the congress rule? And do you think it will not happen if any other party(MGP, UGDP,...) comes to power? Don't you realize that things we complain about, happened even during the congress rule? When we had an IIT engineer as our CM, we had too many expectations out of him. Unfortunately he could not live up to all of them in four years. However considering all the progress Goa made, I think he deserves another chance. At the time of elections, should we refrain from voting thinking that all are equaly bad? It is again a choice, we have to make and choose the best among the rest. I have justified why I consider the Parrikar-led govt to be my choice in my posting: http://www.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet/2005-April/026572.html and if anyone disagrees, I request them to justify their disagreement before stamping abuses. Churchill down Tollygunge April 10, 2005 19:00 IST Yusuf Yakubu and Marcos Pereira each scored a brace as Churchill Brothers beat Tollygunge Agragami 4-2 in the National Football League match in Kolkata on Sunday. Ghanaian Yakubu gave the visitors a 2-0 lead at the breather before his Brazilian teammate pumped in another two while Saumik Dey and Tarif Ahmed reduced the margin for Tollygunge at the Salt Lake stadium. With both the rivals hovering round in the relegation zone, the victory gave Churchill vital three points that promoted the Goans to the joint eighth spot with Mohun Bagan in the league standing with 17 points from 16 matches. Tollygunge, on the other hand, slipped a step behind from the ninth spot as they remained with 15 points from 16 games. Yakubu struck as early as the seventh minute and scored again in the last minute before the break from a penalty awarded by referee P Bhaskar. Marcos made the issue safer in the 54th minute before Dey led a Tollygunge resurgence converting a free-kick and making the scoreline 1-3 barely three minutes later. Tollygunge further narrowed the margin through youngster Tarif Ahmed in the 83rd minute, but Marcos sealed their fate striking it rich in the fag end of the thrilling encounter. -- Using Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail/

Dempo edge past SBT April 10, 2005 19:43 IST A last-minute goal by Valeriano Rebello helped Federation Cup champions Dempo Sports Club, Goa, beat State Bank of Travancore, Thiruvananthapuram 2-1 and also lead the points table in the National Football League for the ONGC Cup in Kozhikode on Sunday. With this win, the Goan team edged past defending champions East Bengal (33) and Sporting Club (32) to emerge the sole leader in the League with 34 points after 16 rounds. Dempo resorted to a defensive game in the first half and allowed SBT to go on the attack. But their custodian Satish Kumar, who was adjudged the man-of-the-match, came up with a superb performance to deny scoring opportunities for the rivals. It was Ranti Martins who netted the first goal for the visitors in the 34th minute, even as an out-of-form SBT goalkeeper, Jean Christian failed to collect the ball neatly. Desperately needing a win to move up the points table, SBT again went on the attack in the second half. Substitute Mohammed Rafi, coming in for Paul Antony, connected a free kick from Abdul Naushad for the equaliser in the 74th minute. As the match was in the dying moments with a 1-1 draw on the cards, Rebello shot home a long ranger to give his team the all-important goal. SBT continues to remain at the bottom of the table with 10 points and will now take on Vasco, Goa in their next outing here on April 13. -- Using Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail/
[Goanet]Salmona Spring: Open Update To Governor Of Goa - 3.
Sunday, 10 April 2005. To, The Governor of Goa, Panaji. Goa. Your Excellency, The construction is still on...and going full steam ahead. The construction, which is the beginning of the destruction of the Salmona Spring Conservation Zone has still not been stopped by you. You have the powers to impose a temporary injunction through an Executive Order, Mr. Jamir. We appeal to you, yet again, to use them. The Director of Panchayats also has the powers. The Dy. Collector (North) also has the powers. The Mamlatdar also has the powers. The Block Development Officer also has the powers. All are Judicial Officers. And the Saligao Panchayat also has the powers to revoke the construction licence. But alas...political, administrative and judicial will is lacking to temporarily stop the construction. Right now, it is the will of corruption that powers the construction and destruction at Salmona. Ironically, the people of Saligao who do not have any judicial powers vested in them, stopped the construction once. They took over the site and held a peaceful 'dharna' there on 25 March 2005. Because it could become a law and order situation, the Calangute Police had to call in the Mamlatdar of Bardez to put a temporary halt to the construction, pending the revocation and acquisition. But because corrupt, vested interests at the lower levels of your bureaucracy were stalling the revocation and acquisition, the construction has started again - with a vengence and arrogance that comes from raw, money power. Does your bureaucracy have the judicial and administrative will to temporarily stop the construction? Do the people of Saligao need to come out again to peacefully stop it? They will, if no action is forthcoming from the government to stop the wanton destruction of the only natural heritage spot they have left. We await your immediate intervention, NOW, on site. [Goanet]From The Navhind Times: Parrikar confident of returning to power
Parrikar confident of returning to power NT Staff Reporter Panaji April 9: We will come back, was the catchline of the former chief minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, at the inauguration of the Panaji constituency office of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), today. Speaking informally to a group of newsmen, Mr Parrikar said that Goa is witnessing chaos in every sector, with the state administration reaching the stagnation point. I can foresee general elections, soon, he predicted. Earlier, the office was inaugurated by a senior citizen, Mr Mohan Rao, in the presence of the city mayor, Mr Ashok Naik, former health minister, Dr Suresh Amonkar and other local senior leaders of the party. The office will work as a meeting place for me, to interact with the citizens of Panaji as well as the party workers, Mr Parrikar said, adding that whenever people came to meet him at the BJP headquarters in the city, the premises always experienced pressure. He also added that the concept of office of the MLA was introduced by him in 1995. Mr Parrikar will initially meet the people at the Panaji constituency office during morning time, with evenings dedicated to the activities relating to the by-election preparations. The people will also be able to meet him by prior appointment. Speaking about the present state administration, Mr Parrikar observed that the Governor, Mr S C Jamir was not taking any decision, as was made to believe. In fact, the problems created in the state such as the uncertainty hovering over the Goa Common Entrance Test 2005 and so on are due to the Governors failure to take any decision, he maintained. The files are piling up in government offices and whatever little works are being carried out were started during the tenure of my government, the former chief minister claimed. He also flayed the present state administration for appointing an IAS officer in charge of the Value Added Tax, adding, he is already burdened with the charges of many other departments thus finding it difficult to do justice to the Office of the Commercial Taxes. A special officer is required for this office of importance, he said. Mr Parrikar also expressed confidence that his government would come back to power, irrespective of the by-election or the assembly polls. http://www.navhindtimes.com/stories.php?part=newsStory_ID=04105 --- We report facts/news which are not exposed --- http://www.goa-world.com/ The Death of the Holy Father http://frpat.com/jpii/jpiimenu.htm Gulf-Goans e-Newsletter http://www.goa-world.com/ The Goan Forum http://www.colaco.net/ Maie mogan nomoskar, mozo noman. --- Teotonio R. de Souza [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: It is the duty of the Church magisterium to ensure the orthodoxy of its beliefs and practices. Once that is clear to the believers, one can expect some Church authorities, depending upon their individual background, to be more or less conservative in exercising this magisterium. I have known Anthony de Mello personally during some years at De Nobili College, Pune. That was the time he was inventing new ways of training the religious men and women to meet the challenges of the modern world after Vatican II. All, This so-called church magisterium has changed over time and there is no guarantee it will not change in the future (there was a time when married priests were allowed, now they are not except in some places in the UK today where there are CATHOLIC married priests who were former Anglican married ministers). The infallibility of the Pope is also a fairly recent change, so also Vatican II. The point I am making is that Ratzinger's views should not necessarily be considered the fixed, immutable views of the Church, it changes and has changed over time. The church is one billion Catholics, not a small group of European curia sitting in the Vatican. Historically and continuing today, the Vatican has been suspicious and nervous about Eastern spirituality. I feel it is intimidated and threatened by the East. Hence, when the first cause of Blessed Vaz came up in the 18th century, one of the reasons it was rejected by the Pope was Vaz was a Eastern mystic and Europeans saints at the time (Montfort, Vincent de Paul) were approved as they posed no such Eastern threat. That fear (racist?) continues today and was manifested in the Anthony de Mello case. Infact on this forum (not Teotonio but others) have made a number of bigoted statements against Hinduism no doubt mindlessly reflecting European prejudices against Hinduism/Buddhism/Sikhism. There is no doubt some Catholic Goans feel superior to Goan Hindus based on their religious background, a trait shown by some on this forum over the years. A trait which also arises from wanting to closely identify with their colonial masters. They accept most saints should be Europeans. Another colonial structure - no non-European Pope, perhaps that will change in 10 days. Regards, George

I have since had a rethink, coming to the conclusion that one should counter such posts with due forte. It is easy to be dismissive and confine such posts the garbage bin, however many of our readers might have actually succumbed to the propaganda ( as I see it) so it is right and fitting to re butt what was posted. I find it difficult to come to terms with 'Parikkar's accommodation with Shri Monserate', as he put, it just so that he could continue in governance. This act in itself shows that Parrikar would move Heaven and Earth to remain in power. There is more than meets the eye and what Parrikar has stated in regard to the removal of Monserate is just hogwash. It in fact shows that the man is not above accommodation when and if it suits his purpose. He was even willing to look aside as Monserate milked the cow - this is what he has clearly stated - it was only when he felt that Monserate had overstepped his given line that Parrikar eventually intervened!. So now you have it an ex CM who is willing and able to overlook graft. What followed , in regard to the expulsion is just bull, for Goan public consumption. Cajetan Rego seems to think that Parrikar's accommodation of people who err and who do so big time, is quite alright - the aim being to remain in Government. Cajetan Rego has conveniently side stepped the inexcusable expulsion, of Felipe Neri and the contorted fix perpetrated by the Speaker and some more members of the Government. I would remind readers, that Parrikar's hand was in this - if not, then he is not fit to lead the Government - knowing nothing of what goes on! Parrikar not wanting greetings on his birthday and acknowledgment according to Cajetan Rego is meant to deceive the people of Goa. Parrikar is deliberately painting himself as a goody, goody. The truth of funds misappropriated will only come to light, if and when the Governor proposes a complete audit of the expenditure incurred. Parrikar has not answered pertinent questions put to him and his Government; for instance the overspend on building the Cineplex as compared to costs of building a similar project elsewhere in India. Goa was a tourist destination long before Parrikar came on the scene and for Cajetan Rego to give credit to Parrikar for this happening is, well quite ignorant. Anyway what good is it to the local people of Goa ? Most of the money earned does not remain in Goa. A very big proportion of the people working in the tourism are not Goans. So there is nothing to crow about Goa being the showcase of Indian tourism; what this has created, is in fact inflation which the local people can ill afford. There are scores of people in Goa relying on remittances from relatives working abroad - cut that off and many would be destitute. The bottom line is that Goa and Goans are being exploited in monetary terms as well as in terms of the environment and available resources. Cajetan Rego has conveniently ignored Parrikar's push to exclude Catholic Goans in Government Administrative posts. In a short space of time, with more and more Catholic Goans taking employment abroad, the strings that will be pulled, will be to the detriment of many Goans. Parrikar is very sweet with words - words cost nothing, unfortunately people like Cajetan Rego are easily bought. The only one who did support Parrikar on this forum in the past was Gaspar Almeida. He has gone quiet recently, perhaps because of the adverse events that befell his beloved BJP. Now in his place we have Carlos 6143 and Cajetan Rego. Unofrtunately if things go wrong, the rest of Goanetters will not be able to vent our feelings on either Carlos 6143 or Cajetan Rego, we do not know these people. Now if Gaspar Almeida were to throw his hat in with these two then we can and will be able to have our fingers pointedly and wagging at that. I would urge our readers not to be taken in by such shallow postings which are nothing but propaganda. I have said this before - you court the BJP at your own peril. It is a crying shame that accommodation by some members of the Congress Party were responsible for bringing this blight on the people of Goa. The people of Goa should now look to electing people from a different shade, why not try the Goa Suraj party and the recent incarnation from Margao? Cheers, Gabe Menezes. London, England

This I gather is the first thing one asks to learn when trying to assimilate a new language non-formally. I am in the process of compiling a free short tutorial called Cursing in Konkani. People interested in joining as students or as language advisors please contact me directly. In your introductory e-mail please mention whether you wish to teach or to learn and your current level of Konkani usage. All correspondence will be kept completely confidential, except for those who give me permission to quote using their names. There have been various attempts at getting the younger generation of Goans settled abroad to get interested in learning the language of their soil. Not much has worked out. Maybe this would be a alternative way of getting them interested in Konkani. Together WE can do it for Goa! Cecil

[Goanet]Goa to emerge at hotspot.
http://www.newkerala.com/news-daily/news/features.php?action=fullnewsid=96104 Goa, Kerala to emerge as hotspots in global resorts market India News, Mumbai: Goa and Kerala will emerge as hotspots on the map of international resorts market and investments will be flowing to these locations once the government provides necessary infrastructural facilities, according to experts. Goa will be most attractive spot for resort market investors followed by Kerala. However, more business volumes are expected from Goa, Australian-based hotel major Accor's vice president (Development-Asia Pacific) Gaurav Bhushan told PTI here today. Goa is offering tourist package aligned to international level while Kerala would be developed as special experience package, he said. Goa is attracting more investments as resort destination while Kerala would take some more time, he said. Global consulting and service organisation HVS international managing director (Asia) David Ling said several European hoteliers and tour operators are looking at Goa as favourite resort market destination. With its strategic geographic location and its ability to offer comprehensive tourism experience, Goa is an attractive destination for investors. Kerala has also got huge potentials for resort markets, Ling said. However, investment in Indian resort market would only flow if the government provides public infrastructure, Bhushan said adding, government should invest more in infrastructure at resort spots. -- Cheers, Gabe Menezes. [Goanet]JACKFRUIT (PONNOS!)
The jackfruit originated in India at the foot of the Western Ghats, and is now very popular throughout South East Asia. The tree is handsome and stately, 30 to 70 feet tall, with evergreen, alternate, glossy, somewhat leathery leaves which are oblong, oval or elliptic in form, 4 to 6 inches in length; juvenile leaves are lobed. All parts contain pank (sticky white latex.) Short, stout flowering twigs emerge from the trunk and large branches, or even from the soil-covered base of very old trees. It cannot tolerate wet feet. If the roots touch water, the tree will not bear fruit or may die. A good yield is about 150 large fruits per tree annually, though some trees bear as many as 250 and a fully mature tree may produce 500, these probably of medium or small size. A jackfruit tree is said to live as long as 100 years. However, productivity declines with age. Almost everyone in Goa grows jackfruit trees and they can be seen in every compound/backyard in villages as well as in towns. The fruit is unusual as it is borne on the main branches and the trunks, occasionally even from surface roots of the tree. It is the largest tree-borne fruit in the world, weighing from 10 to 60 or even as much as 110 pounds, and up to 36 inches long and 20 inches in diameter. The rind or exterior of the compound fruit is green or yellow when ripe and is composed of numerous hard, cone-like points attached to a thick and rubbery, pale yellow or whitish wall. The interior consists of large edible bulbs of yellow, banana-flavored flesh, massed among narrow ribbons of thin, tough undeveloped perianths and a central, pithy core. Each bulb encloses a smooth, oval, light brown starchy seed covered by a thin white membrane. The seed is ¾ to 1-½ inches long and ½ to ¾ inches thick and is white and crisp within. There may be 100 or up to 500 seeds in a single fruit. The aroma of the ripening fruit is extremely sweet, with a distinctive flavor reminiscent of banana and pineapple. Once the aroma spreads, it cannot be controlled; hence, the good old Konkani saying: Ponnos lipovn dovrunk zait punn tacho pormoll lipovnk zainam! (You may be able to hide a jackfruit but you cannot hide its aroma!) Jackfruits mature 3 to 8 months after flowering. The fruit is covered with numerous hard points, is pale green in color and changes to a yellowish-brown during ripening. Fruit is mature for harvest when the single small leaf above the stem withers and the first color change occurs. Ripening continues post-harvest and with experience is ascertained by tapping the fruit. When ripe, the fruit softens a little and the rind will give in when pushed. Jackfruits turn brown and deteriorate quickly after ripening. If a person is fat and has a round stomach, people remark: Zala polle ponnos kosso! (Look at him, he has become like a jackfruit!) Sometimes, they jokingly tap his stomach and ask him: Ponnos pikla re? (Is the jackfruit ripe?) Jackfruit is a summer fruit of Goa. It ripens principally from March to June. It is one of those delicacies which once you begin to eat ends only when the stomach is full. Many people at first hesitate to eat it because of the pank but once they get the hang of eating it then there is no looking back; jackfruit fondness grows with familiarity. This is how the good old saying Vokol ghore khainam mhunnon bingttanim varn bhorlelem came to be known. Roughly translated, it means the bride pretended not to eat jackfruit and yet the pit was filled with seeds. Similarly, many people despise things when they have had too much of them or had them for too long and here again we have the Goan jackfruit-related saying: Pott bhortuch ghore ambott! (When your stomach is full, carpel is sour.) There are three types of jackfruits in Goa: (1) Rosall Ponnos having a pale-brown or occasionally palegreen rind and containing small, fibrous, soft, mushy, but very sweet ghore (carpel;) the rind can be broken open with bare hands. Some women, when their husbands are aged, refer to them as Rosall Ponnos; (2) Capo Ponnos - usually having a light-green rind, occasionally brownish and containing crisp and almost crunchy ghore of high quality though not quite as sweet; a knife is needed to cut open the rind; and (3) Capo-Rosall Ponnos - also having the same rind as that of Capo but its ghore is a mixture of both - neither hard nor soft but sweeter than Capo Ponnos; also needs a knife to cut open the rind. The char (perianths) of the Type 3 jackfruit is quite thick and as tasty as the fruit. As children, we ate it as well. Jackfruit trees of Type 1 mostly bear fruits at their lower trunks, whereas Types 2 and 3 bear fruits high above on the tree. To remove jackfruits from such trees, you climb up the tree with the help of a ladder, carrying with you a baincho razu (well rope) and a knife, place the rope on

Toward the end of the 20th century, reflecting on the Catholic Church's two millenniums, John Paul issued extraordinary apologies for the Inquisition and the Crusades. --- Further: Is the Pope Overdoing the Apologies? He may be providing ammunition to critics who would like the Church to dismantle core doctrines. This column first appeared on Beliefnet in 2000. On no fewer than 94 occasions, according to a the Italian journalist Luigi Accattoli, Pope John Paul II has publicly admitted that the Catholic Church was guilty of errors in the past. Now, in what Religion News Service calls a move unprecedented in two millenniums of Roman Catholic history, John Paul has issued a summation of all these apologies. He read the document, Memory and Reconciliation: The Church and the Mistakes of the Past, at a solemn ceremony on March 12, the first Sunday of Lent. Re: [Goanet]Worms
Dear Cecil, Thanks for the clarification. Yours is an extraordinary talent, and it won't be long before you are a true shining light in Goan literature, and not just in Goan literature. All the more reason for you to be scrupulous (but delightfully undecorous) in observing the niceties of debate. I've been reading aloud your recent Konkani lesson no. 1 to friends and relatives. It's true comic material, and would be a smash hit if used in a tiatr. Ever thought of that? Warm rgards, Victor -Original Message- From: Cecil Pinto [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: goanet@goanet.org; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sat, 09 Apr 2005 13:29:57 +0530 Subject: [Goanet]Worms Dear Victor, It is always a pleasure to read your rare but relevant postings on GoaNet. I have often replied privately but have never got a response and thought of you as being rude. Only recently Margaret Mascarenhas informed me that your service provider, AOL, does not accept messages from Sancharnet. Just a couple of points I would like to clarify: - Victor: For example, the recent extended debate on abuse is said to have brought some worms out of the woodwork! Rebecca O'Leary (no cousin or godchild of mine) got involved, and had some things to say that needed saying; I got involved as well. Neither Ms. O'Leary nor I are regular posters on Goanet, so the two of us must count ourselves among the worms. Or is one to be considered more wormlike than the other? Cecil: I do not know much about different species of worms but rest assured my characterization of lurkers as 'worms in the wood work' was nothing but an extension of Rebecca's description of herself being lured out of the 'woodwork'. No offense was intended. -- Victor: The point that I am trying to make is that there should be civility in all our debates. In ALL of them, and in every part of each debate. I don't care who started the mudslinging---the person who has mud flung at him, and then flings mud back, also winds up having mud on his hands. Cecil: I totally agree with you.
