He was a prolific scorer for his St Anne's Bombay school, writes ZENA COSTA, Margao in Gomantak Times. IT'S LEFT TO CITIZENS TO TAKE ACTION? It may have been the World Environment Day, but it meant little for a driver of a forest department truck, who was arrested on charges of dumping a truck-load of garbage on the national highway on the Mapusa-Bastora-Moira junction. Karl Pinto De Souza, driving home on Sunday afternoon, noticed the dumping of tiles, mud and stones and rubble in progress. Other members of the Moira Civic and Consumer Forum and comunidade also gathered at the site and stopped the dumping. It is learnt the range officer tried to work out a compromise by offering to clean up a whole stretch of garbage at Moira, if the complaint was withdrawn. But the residents of Moira were determined to punish the guilty, as they felt this would set an example to others to protect the environment and save the landscape. What helped to make Rane chief minister yet again? Some suggestions of answers from the media. RESENTMENT AGAINST the 'autocratic' BJP regime, anger of the Bahujan Samaj (non-upper caste Hindus) against ex-chief minister Manohar Parrikar's policies, the politics of vengeance and double-speak, a strong Hindutva-line, personal vilification campaigns and unity among Congressmen (though temporary) seems to be the major factors that led to the debacle of the BJP in the June 2 bye-elections. (Herald) GONE WITH THE WIND: Congress blows off BJP, drubs Parrikar's arrogance 4-1 (headline in GT) DISASTER AT HIGH NOON FOR BJP: By noon on June 5, it was all over. Not to be missed is that BJP finished third in Cumbharjua and a lowly fourth in Benaulim.(GT) DIGAMBAR KAMAT, BUT SECULAR MARGAO LOSES: Congress candidate Digambar Kamat powered a win, but only just. It looked simple for him initially, but a dangerous polarisation not only narrowed his victory margin, but brought him to the precipice of defeat. But if it was not for some mature citizens, a communally-loaded campaign may have hit its target. Says Lok Shakti convenor Datta Naik, The attempt to polarise the voting is a dangerous move and should be stopped at all costs. When the electronic voting machines were put on the table for counting, the Congress appeared shocked when they realised that the BJP attempt to polarise the Hindu votes had almost paid off. (H) o People have rejected Parrikar, says Lok Shakti, calling the election results a slap on the face of the former CM. (H) BJP FRAUD ON LAND OWNERS: Authilia Carvalho from Margao writes that the ousted BJP government proposed with lightening speed to acquire land for construction of a ring-road and missing-link along with land for rehabilitation of hutments for slum-dwellers at Margao. Carvalho says: A notification ... has been invoked in violation of the law and issued in March last, i.e. after the BJP government fell. The above notification is issued under a colourable exercise of power with malafides under the strong pressure of two BJP MLAs, one of whom Vijay Pai Khot is a builder and has constructed a big project near the proposed ring road, and the other is an ex-Margao MLA who has a personal interest as the slum dwellers are his vote-bank. (Herald) DOCTOR'S ORDERS: WILLY'S PRESSURE TACTICS CLEARS DECKS FOR geriatric Rane as CM. Threat of Willy, Mickky, Dhavlikar crossing floors may virtually force Congress to maintain status quo on Rane. Gomtantak Times quotes insiders in the Congress to say that the Congress was pressured by a dangerous possibility of Dr Wilfred de Souza accepting the BJP's last ditch desperate attempt to prop him up as Chief Minister. This lead to upsetting of all equations within the Congress. It also led to a day of hectic parleys when both the Luizinho Faleiro and Rane camps

In fact, cashew fenny and the fenny stills in villages are practically a part of our collective Goan racial memory. Talk about Goa and fenny always comes into the picture. Which is why all Goans -- and specially cashew fenny lovers -- should make a pilgrimage at least once in their lifetimes to the SVD Seminary in Raia near Margao, to have a sip of the pure cashew fenny distilled by Father Caetano there. If you go in on a summer afternoon, you can also drink gallons of freshly squeezed out neera or juice of cashew fruit, the only fruit with its seed outside its body. The SVD Seminary is a little-known secret among cashew fenny lovers who are constantly despairing of the adulterated cashew fenny sold in the bars and tavernas. Cashew fenny aficionados also swear by Big Boss cashew fenny, probably the purest cashew fenny available in a branded bottle. Father Caetano at the SVD Seminary politely declined to speak about his distilling operation beyond mentioning that they make only a limited quantity of the cashew feni, since they have a large cashew orchard. It's not sold commercially, but doled out to well-wishers. Unlike in most small-scale operations in the villages, the cashew apples in the SVD Seminary are cleaned and sorted out before being crushed in a modern-looking fruit crusher. In most of the country distilleries, the fruit is crushed in a large rock hollows using large boulders and such like. The juice is then kept for a few days to allow fermentation before it is distilled. Traditionally, the cashew juice is allowed to ferment by itself without any fermentation agent. The first distillation produces urrack and the second distillation produces cashew fenny. Very rarely, it is distilled for a third time to produce a very potent cashew fenny. Most cashew fenny producers in Goa still use the traditional pot-still method in which the extracted juice, after fermentation, is distilled in large clay or copper pots (bahann). This whole process is what makes cashew fenny what it is. Who knows when the first cashew fenny was made? The cashew tree is actually a native of the West Indies, though it came to Goa via Brazil and the Portuguese around 400 years ago, which was when the first cashew fenny was also probably distilled. However, experts say the cashew fenny technique was probably borrowed locally, since coconut fenny was already being produced in Goa when the Portuguese arrived; coconut trees are native to Goa. The word fenny comes from fenn -- which means froth or foam. Whatever be its origins, cashew fenny has come to be known as the original Goan alcohol. Over the years, though, unscrupulous elements, cashing in n its popularity, have been passing off as the real thing adulterated liquors, usually some cheap white liquor to which is added essence of cashew fenny for its distinctive smell and taste. This large-scale adulteration has, in turn, brought a lot of disrepute to what should have actually been a noble Goan drink. If there is still genuine cashew fenny, it's thanks to purists like Father Caetano and Valentino Vaz, the entrepreneur behind Big Boss. Mr Vaz heads Madame Rosa Distillery, the best known premium cashew fenny. Sick of hearing complaints about spurious cashew fenny, he decided to create a cashew fenny brand that would be the standard for genuine cashew fenny. Two decades later, Big Boss is the final word as far as good cashew fenny goes. Mr Vaz's business enterprise, P. V. V. Enterprises -- they also own Mr Baker -- are also suppliers and distributors for other major national and international liquor brands. During the Portuguese era, they were importers of Portuguese spirits. So he has been travelling all over the world. Travelling and discovering all kinds of liquors made in different parts of the world -- champagne in France, sake in Japan, and so on. Mr Vaz realised that cashew fenny was actually a rather unique drink and could be marketed internationally

[Goanet]Advani goes....Parrikar to follow?
http://in.rediff.com/news/2005/jun/07advpak.htm Advani quit over Togadia's 'traitor' tag Sheela Bhatt | June 07, 2005 13:49 IST L K Advani's resignation as Bharatiya Janata Party president was in reaction to Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Pravin Togadia's comment that he was a 'traitor'. Advani was deeply hurt by the word gaddar (traitor). On hearing it from one section of the (Sangh) Parivar he decided to resign, said a senior Advani confidant and party office-bearer while talking exclusively to rediff.com. Advani believed he could not continue as party president if a Parivar member called him a gaddar, said the aide. We were told in Karachi about this comment and the news disturbed him.He then decided to resign. The furore arose over Advani's comment in Pakistan in support of Mohammed Ali Jinnah. According to his supporters, Advani's statement marks a paradigm shift in the party's core ideology. Advani quoted only one portion of Jinnah's speech. He did not say that Jinnah's whole life was secular! His speech in the Pakistan Constituent Assembly which Advani quoted from, has been suppressed in Pakistan for many years. The Pakistan government wants us to believe that Jinnah never made this speech. Why don't people look at the facts? Jinnah died soon after making this speech, and his speech was suppressed, the Advani aide said, strongly defending his leader. Within the BJP, Advani's supporters have been arguing passionately since yesterday that he said many more things beyond Jinnah in Pakistan which are being ignored. He did not only speak about Jinnah, he supported secular values in governance. He talked about the non-theocratic State. Why are his critics only looking at what he said about Jinnah? asked his confidant. People must also look at the fact that for the first time, an Indian politician was invited to inaugurate a temple in a land with a history of demolition of Hindu temples. Asked why Advani chose to make such far-reaching comments in Pakistan and not in India, the aide said, The leadership can't be a prisoner of perceptions, leadership is all about changing perceptions and evolving new ideas. He added, Wait and watch, the BJP will accept Advani's ideas. -- Cheers, Gabe Menezes. London, England

[Goanet][OFFTOPIC} NEWS: Bamboo is India's 'green gold' By Lola Nayar (fwd)
Would you have expected this about the humble plant in Goa's backyard too? FN -- Forwarded message -- Bamboo is India's 'green gold' By Lola Nayar BAMBOO TREES IN INDIA. THE PLANT IS CALLED GREEN GOLD IN THE COUNTRY FOR ITS MULTIPLE USES AND GREAT ECONOMIC POTENTIAL. NEW DELHI: It is expected to create eight million jobs, lift five million families out of poverty and earn $3.6 billion by 2007. Little wonder then that the humble bamboo is called 'green gold' in India, the country that has the second-largest reserve of bamboo in the world. India is looking to not only develop a bamboo-based economy in the country but also tap the growing global demand for bamboo. As against an estimated demand for 26.9 million tons of bamboo, India is currently able to supply only 13.47 million tons. The country today exploits just a tenth of its bamboo-producing potential. The commercial consumption of bamboo globally is worth around $10 billion, which is expected to reach $20 billion by 2015. India's share in the global market is estimated to be $1 billion and is expected to increase to $5.7 billion by 2015. China's share in the world bamboo market is currently the highest at $5 billion. There is a growing realisation that the potential of bamboo in the country has not been tapped to its fullest. Bamboo is being rediscovered in India as its attributes and potential are increasingly recognised, said Prodipto Ghosh, secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Forests. According to the Forest Survey of India report, about 12.8 percent of total forest area is under bamboo cultivation, with the northeast region accounting for 66 percent of the country's bamboo resources in terms of value and 28 percent in terms of area. BAMBOO HANDICRAFT SITS PRETTY ON A SHELF. THE PLANT IS CALLED GREEN GOLD IN THE COUNTRY FOR ITS MULTIPLE USES AND GREAT ECONOMIC POTENTIAL. The government is in the final stages of finalising a $115-million project for implementation over the next few years to promote bamboo cultivation and trade through a National Mission on Bamboo Trade and Technology Development. Agriculture scientists have so far identified around a dozen varieties of high-value commercial bamboo for cultivation by farmers that could be used as an alternative to wood for construction, furniture making and even weaving cloth using bamboo fibres. In fact, bamboo fibre clothes and saris are fast catching the fancy in some parts of the country. Efforts are also on to promote cultivation of edible bamboo varieties. Outside of northeast, efforts are also on to promote awareness of bamboo shoots as a food delicacy. To make bamboo cultivation more attractive for farmers, the agriculture ministry has been pressing the government for declaring it a horticulture crop. Once India makes it attractive for farmers to grow bamboo as a cash crop and sets up the infrastructure to tap its commercial potential through value addition, the country would be well placed to build upon its rich biodiversity of 136 bamboo species. It is only in the last few years that bamboo sector has been witnessing substantial growth in terms of awareness and uses, and bamboo's wealth-generation potential, said T.P. Subramony, resident manager of International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR). Headquartered in Beijing, INBAR is an inter-governmental organisation with 30 member-countries, including India. Bamboo has traditionally been used for paper manufacture, scaffolding, construction material and handicrafts. Now there is more diversification such as bamboo flooring and panelling, though only a few people are doing this work. Bamboo is also used for making incense sticks, foot rulers and matchsticks. The biggest growth is expected to come from use of bamboo as a replacement for wood. Bamboo housing is slowly growing in concept. While earlier bamboo houses were seen as a poor man's dwelling, now bamboo is being seen as a modern material not just for construction. By 2015, the Indian bamboo industry is estimated to grow into a $5.7 billion sector as against $574 million in 2000, a 10-fold increase provided all the factors are favourable and all stakeholders from farmers to community and policy makers support the efforts, said Subramony. And that India Gate at the end of Rajpath is a farce that honours Indians who died in battle. And that all people born in present day India prior to 1947 are infact ... British ?? Mario replies: Bosco, I was not using logic, just stating historical facts, which cannot be deduced by using logic. Facts, not logic, say that Indian soldiers fought in WW-II, and the monument to their valor is a fact and not a farce. Bosco, I was born in India prior to 1947. I have no idea what citizenship I had when I was born, but it all became moot in 1947, didn't it? Bosco continues gamely: At one time you stated (and I could be mistaken) that the US never attacked any country. Well the US did declare war on the Great Britain June 12, 1812. In that war the offensive actions of the US failed in every attempt to capture Canada. Mario replies: Bosco, you need to catch up with the history of this region. The nascent US had recently declared it's independence from Britain after a revolutionary war against arguably the strongest nation in the world at the time, and was still in a dangerous formative stage. In 1812 it was defending it's territorial integrity against Britain, which was still a hostile nation trying to turn back the clock, and regain control over the United States. BTW, isn't the British Queen still the figurative sovereign of Canada? Bosco writes: I guess for you everything is bogus except when you say it. So in order to prevent any further arguing between our two peoples let's conclude that not only was there no Canada in 1812 but neither was there Ohio. Nevertheless you can now proudly fly the burgee. Mario replies: Bosco, my friend, you are entitled to your opinions and your own version of logic, not to your own facts. Not everything is bogus, only something that runs counter to an established fact. You cannot conclude that there was no Canada in 1812, when, in fact, there was no Canada in 1812. However, I'm sorry to have to educate you, but there was an Ohio in 1812. The following is an excerpt from one of the history books of the region: The land we call Ohio today was part the Northwest Territory that the United States won by defeating the British in the Revolutionary War. Ohio was admitted into the Union as the 17th state in 1803. Actually the Battle of Lake Erie, which ended the war of 1812, was fought off the coast of Ohio. When you come down here to visit I will show you the monument to the British surrender. Bosco writes: I'm glad Fred didn't quote The Globe and Mail or your buddy Haroon Siddiqui. Mario replies: I'm glad as well, because we don't need their blatant anti-American propaganda muddying up the facts. Bosco writes: I hope you are not going to ask me if I was refused a green card too;-) Mario replies: I have no evidence, real or circumstantial, that would make me think that.
[Goanet]Problems with sancharnet.in (and/or hotmail)
There is nothing like bad publicity that summons the attention of service providers and politicians alike. Sancharnet.in (BSNL) will NOT act unless sufficiently large number of people write and force them to resolve this problem. Besides, GoaNet is an appropriate place to air/expose these issues, which receive wide publicity via the electronic media. I also suggest that the ISP subscribers and members of this community address/cc their complaints to the Sancharnet (BSNL) management in Goa. [Goanet]FAQ on Goa's Political nightmare 24/10/2000 to 7/8/2005
Q Was there a BJP Government in Goa? A No there was never a BJP Government (viz having a simple majority of 21 out of 40 members in the Legislative Assembly )in Goa. In fact a) the first on 24 October 2000 was a technically constituted Government (without the mandate of the people -- but with the support of other party MLAs to form a simple majority ) b) the second on 2 June 2002 again was a coalition Government led by the BJP to form a simple cobbled majority c) even as of 7 June 2005 it is still a minority and relegated to the Opposition benches. Q Who were the MLA's responsible for the rise of the BJP? A Both Dr Wilfred De Souza and later Mr Francisco Sardinha were responsible for the rise in numbers of the BJP MLA's in Goa. Q what led to both these senior Indian National Congress leaders to revolt and join hands with the BJP? A It was Mr Luisinho Faleiro (the blue eyed boy of Madam Sonia Gandhi ) who sidelined senior INC members Dr Wilfred De Souza and Mr Francisco Sardinha (both Brahmins)for ministerial positions and instead split the UGDP and MGP to consolidate his position that resulted in their revolt and abetting with the BJP Q Is the ex CM Mr Manohar Gopalkrishna Parrikar a hard core RSS and BJP office bearer? A Yes Mr Parrikar who partly studied in a Jesuit school viz Loyola High School Margao; is a self confessed, RSS and makes no pretence of it and on these credentials, he has got himself elected to the Goa Legislative Assembly for three terms. Q Has Mr Parrikar measured himself as an efficient CM? A There is no doubt that Mr Parrikar an IIT alumunus ranks as one of four excellent Chief Ministers of Goa a) the non matriculate late Dayanand (Bhausaheb) Bandodkar b) the USA studied Pratapsing Raoji Rane c) the Dr turned politician Dr Wilfred A De Souza Q Did the BJP have an agenda to pursue its ideology in Goa? A Yes, under the stewardship of the ex Chief Minister Mr Manohar Parrikar in the Government and the active help of the RSS Pramukh in Goa a Prof ---his guide and mentor ---they had a clear agenda of a) first uniting the caste riddled hindu community (this is next to impossible as their vertical caste heirarchy is like water tight compartments) using emotive religious appeals -- Ram , Inquisition et al b) indoctrinating the mindset of the Schedule Tribes (Van Vasi) and Schedule Castes towards hatred for minorities as westernised and traitors (Rahu Ketu ) c) treating the minorites Catholics as one block (irrespective of the caste structure still prevalent and practiced by Catholics contrary to Catholic teachings) d) treating the minorites Moslems as one block irrespective of whether Shia or Sunni e) making c) and d) above, subservient to the majority community f) doling out employment opportunities in Government according the the % of each communities; g) representation by way of Ministerial positions also according to the % of each community (excluding Moslems in the cabinet) Q Is it true that BJP wear their communal colour on their sleeves viz by word and action, while INC makes a pretence of being secularists ? A Yes --- e.g the BJP finds nothing wrong in the demolition of the Babri Masjid or the Gujarat genocide; while the INC merely makes a pretence of secularism e.g a) INC promises no action to be taken on the councillor involved in the intrusion criminal tresspass into the Paco Patriacal Archbishops residence Altinho Panaji to remove the linga, b) INC has niether taken action nor supported families those whose plaques were destroyed on 18 June 2004 under the renaming of roads issue c) INC MLA purporting to hold secular credentials has clandestinely abetted with an encroacher in the premise of Santa Almas Chapel Margao denigrating the sanctity of the place of worship till date d) an INC MLA claims (as per his statement in the House) to know the culprit responsible for the burning of the Masjid at Porvorim but till date no criminal action has been taken, e) the INC in Goa including Catholic MPs and Ms Margaret Alva ex MP of Uttar Kanara have not been able to intervene in the matter of near collapse of the Church at Anjediva and buckled down in Feb 2005 under the threat of the Bajrang Dal not to permit the customary feast of Our Lady of Brotas f)Niether have Catholic MLAs (with secular credentials) INC MLAs have been able to identify the cause of the fire Near Bom Jesus Basilica Old Goa till date; g) no INC MLA threatened to resign when Holidays on Good Friday and St Francis Xavier were treated as RESTRICTED HOLIDAYS (not cancelled totally) Q Under whose stewardship has Goa seen the best development? A Surely under Mr Manohar Parrikar Goas first and only most dynamic workaholic ex CM --- for the speed with which he executed projects in the 51 months of his fractured political tenure a record which no CM Minister has yet achieved in Goa -- or will achieve in the near future with the only exception of Mr Francisco Monte
[Goanet]Any one for Whisky?
http://in.rediff.com/money/2005/jun/07wine.htm Rs 24 lakh for a bottle of whisky! June 07, 2005 Yes, you read that right. A bottle of whisky for Rs 24 lakh. Wine major Whyte and Mackay Ltd on Tuesday announced the sale of the final bottle available from the world's most expensive limited-edition bottling of The Dalmore 62 Years Old single highland malt scotch whisky for £30,000 (approx Rs 23.80 lakh). The bottle, dubbed 'The Matheson', was the last in a limited- edition bottling to be sold. The company also sold two bottles of The Dalmore 50 Years Old. The Whisky Exchange supplied the bottle to Pennyhill Park Hotel in Surrey, United Kingdom. A private collector and patron of the hotel acquired the bottle of The Dalmore 62 Years Old for a price exceeding £30,000 and also purchased a bottle of The Dalmore 50 Years Old. This record-breaking sale further demonstrates the power of our legendary brand The Dalmore, said Debbie Workman, trade marketing, Whyte and Mackay Ltd. We were honoured to work with The Whisky Exchange and Pennyhill Park Hotel on this historic occasion and we congratulate the lucky connoisseurs who will savor these finely aged malts. This is the 2nd bottle of The Dalmore 62 Years Old that we have sold, said Sukhinder Singh of The Whisky Exchange, selling this extraordinarily rare bottle of The Dalmore again shows that our company is the world's leading supplier of Rare Old Spirits. Commenting on The Dalmore, Singh said: This 62 Years Old gem represents many generations' commitment to producing a highly prized and classic malt whisky. Prior to this sale, another bottle of The Dalmore 62 Years Old, 'The Kildermorie', was auctioned in 2002 for a record £25,877.50 (Rs 20.52 lakh). The rare 62 Years Old spirit has been derived from 1868, 1878, 1926 and 1939 The Dalmore. Over the years it has been racked several times and finally finished in an Oloroso 'Mathusalem' Sherry butt from Gonzalez Byass, Spain, then distilled and matured by The Dalmore Distillery in Alness. Each hand-blown bottle has been individually named and has a specially commissioned, hand printed label with a unique print ink block design, said a Whyte and Mackay media release. The Whisky Exchange is part of Specialty Drinks Ltd, suppliers of premium spirits to the world's leading establishments. -- Cheers, Gabe Menezes. London, England

Sorry Gabriel Bab, I only wanted to correct Pipam Kara to Pilam Kara to make some sense but somehow I seem to have changed both the lines. Actually the way I learnt the song was: intum intum bois mora pilam kara pilam sandunu moro ghelo b'urrah. The above rhyme is to be sung by holding baby's both hands, coupling the right hand and pointing all the fingers into the left palm and lifting both the palms of the babyat the end while saying b'urrah as though the bird took a flight. There is no doubt that it is important to the babies to link the gesture with the words. Sorry for that. Mervyn3.0 Here is what is NOT on the Fox Comedy Network. Amnesty Int'l. Director Responds to President Bush -- in Letter to Editor By EP Staff Published: June 04, 2005 11:00 AM ET NEW YORK In a letter to the editor published Saturday in The New York Times, William F. Schulz, executive director of Amnesty International, responded to President Bush's widely published charge that the group's charges of wide human rights abuses in the war on terror were absurd. Schulz called the charge ironic. If Amnesty's reports are so absurd, Schulz asked, why did the administration repeatedly cite our findings about Saddam Hussein before the Iraq war? Why does it welcome our criticisms of Cuba, China and North Korea? And why does it cite our research in its own annual human rights reports? No amount of spin can erase the myriad human rights abuses committed by United States officials in the 'war on terror.' The United States cannot simultaneously claim that it 'promotes freedom around the world' while detaining tens of thousands at Guantánamo Bay, Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan and in Iraq and other locations without charge or trial and allowing those civilian and military officials responsible for orchestrating a systematic policy of torture to escape accountability. Instead of attacking us, President Bush should insist upon a truly thorough, independent investigation of those who tried to circumvent global prohibitions on torture, and he should open all detention centers to scrutiny by independent human rights groups. Only then will the world be able to judge whether it is Amnesty International or the president whose perspective deserves to be called 'absurd.' The letter was written before the Pentagon acknowledged abuse of the Koran at Guantanamo Bay on Friday night. __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Hi Gabe, Got a firewall, got an antivirus that is updated every week (Australia's own VET which has now been bought by CA) as well as eTrust PestPatrol. My issues probably occurred before I had the firewall in place, a few years ago, in fact. However, with so many memberships (ORACLE, Microsoft, DevX et al) that one subscribes to, when / after installing legitimate software, and adresses given when purchasing from Amazon and software retailers, as well as the fora, I wonder if the email addresses are on-sold to other companies, which are then on-sold in turn to other companies, etc. which gives rise to all the spam (Nigerian-style) plus the hijacking (i.e. impersonation). Funny enough, I have yet to receive any unsolicited email as yet at my personal business address which I have held since 2002 - this is because just half a dozen people know it, and it hasn't been supplied to any software company or used for any purchases. These type of proliferating and self expanding e-mails have nothing to do with any other woes in relation with 'sancharnet'. Besides the songs in Konkani which Victor Rangel-Ribeiro gave us in their English translation (could he post the original versions, please?), there were also the following verses, sung in Portuguese: Santo Antonio de Lisboa, deita chuva em toda Goa (St. Anthony of Lisboa, pour rain throughout Goa). (Santo Antonio de Lisboa - or, as he was called in our language, Sant Anton firngealo - is the same as St. Anthony of Padua. He was born in Lisbon, Portugal, and died in Padua, Italy). In answer to Joe's challenge, and prodded also by Domnick's reminiscences, I now send in a passage from my novel Tivolem, which is based on my recollections of Goa as it was in the mid 1920s and early 1930s (1933 to be exact): When the first rains failed to arrive even by the eighth of June---they should have started on the sixth, Angelinh' Granny had agreed---the voices of Little Arnold and his friends could be heard as they went singing in scraggly procession through Tivolem's winding lanes: Saint Anthony where the bamboos sway Cast rain upon our fields, we pray. Carefully avoiding the ruts, down the narrow bone-dry lanes the children went, carrying symbolic rocks and small flat stones on their heads, calling repeatedly on the miracle worker for help: Saint Anthony in the bamboo grove, Send showers to us from heaven above. Was the saint really in the bamboo groves, Little Arnold wondered, and if so, what was he doing there? Finding no ready answer, he and his friends continued to sing, turning this time to a second, also powerful ally: Saint Isabel, good queen of the poor, Full knee-deep water we implore. Francisco Xavier Antonio Candido Pires, now in the seventh month of his assignment as curate of the parish of Tivolem, heard the children singing, saw them come down the lane, and stopped in his tracks when they ran up to him and crowded around to get his blessing Because I was writing in English for an English-speaking audience, the two- line rhymes I have included are free translations of the Konkani original that we sang; some of the Konkani versions have already been posted here by others. How many remember that children in those years were supposed to run up to a priest whenever they saw one, and get his blessing? My novel Tivolem is based not only on my own memories but on research I did in the Panjim Central LibraryI read every issue of two of the leading newspapers that were published in Goa in 1933. So if readers want to know what Goa was like before they were born, a peek into Tivolem will enlighten them. Alas, the book is currently out of print, but it is likely that copies will be available before long. Best regards, Victor Rangel-Ribeiro, Porvorim and New Jersey

[Goanet]Goan honoured by New York City
http://news.webindia123.com/news/showdetails.asp?id=86337cat=World Indian American gets New York excellence award:- New York | June 07, 2005 12:41:55 PM IST New York, June 7 : New York City has honoured Indian American Andy Shenoy with the 2005 Governor's Award of Excellence for his significant contribution to improving relations between the state and India. It is great honour for me personally. I remember having recommended others for the honour in the past but never thought it would come to me, Shenoy told IANS. The award picks only one person from each country every year. Shenoy, who is originally from Goa with strong connections in Karnataka, has been in the US for well over two decades. Primarily interested in the diamond business, he said he decided to diversify because of the fluctuating conditions. He is the president of the Trivision Group, Inc. In 1993, when a relatively unknown George Pataki decided to jump into the race for governor of New York, Shenoy decided to throw his weight behind the Republican leader. I did not think Governor Pataki could win but out of a personal friendship with Senator Alfonse Marcello D'amato I decided to stand by him. I helped raise funds for his campaign. A lot of people thought I was backing the wrong horse, Shenoy, a diamond, real estate and software businessman, recalled. On the day the results were to be declared, Shenoy and some of his friends got together to celebrate Pataki's defeat because they had done their best and could not do much more than preparing for what they thought was a defeat. Then the news came that, in fact, their candidate had won. From then till now the governor has not forgotten us. He values our friendship now as much as he did then, Shenoy said. That is evident, with Shenoy being awarded so many years later. Now Shenoy is working on a visit by Pataki to India. The original plan was to visit in May last year but because of India's parliamentary elections, the plan was put on hold. I have always been passionate about building ties between the state of New York and India because I see some strong alliances, Shenoy said. We are planning to go later this year. We have not finalised the date yet but it will probably be after September when Governor Pataki visits China. I am travelling with him there as well, Shenoy said. The proposed India visit will be a focused one with the governor specifically exploring business opportunities between the state and India. We are looking at bilateral trade in terms of infrastructure, IT, biotech and finance. There are tremendous opportunities between the companies in the state and India. In the context of the Indian American community's involvement with politics, Shenoy said, We should be everywhere irrespective of the party. Our focus should be on anyone is who is helpful to our cause and India. I have friends both among the Democrats and Republicans. Asked why many more Indian Americans tend to support the Democratic Party than the Republican Party, Shenoy said, Because minorities think Republicans support only the rich. That is of course not true. It is a question of perception. I am not a big, wealthy businessman. But I see a lot of strengths in the Republican Party. Shenoy said bilateral relations between India and the US had picked up much greater momentum under President George W. Bush than before. So, one cannot make a general statement that only one party is good for the community, he said. (IANS) -- Cheers, Gabe Menezes. London, England
Re: [Goanet]Pratapsing Rane 'unanimously' elected Goa CM for seventh term
Strange as to how a non-Goan rules Goa! Besides this Catholic and Hindu issue will not end innit? B. Colaco Hailing from a Rajput family that had settled in Goa from a region around Rajasthan in Northern India a few centuries earlier, the Ranes are located mainly around a region of north east Goa around Sattari, where they have been both respected and feared local feudatories of rulers across the centuries. Some of the Rane ancestors went down in local lore for alternatively battling the Portuguese rulers, and also entering into peace-pacts with them, while building a reputation as stern rulers and warriors in the region. Four defeats and one victory by proxy. The story of BJP's shattered dreams is best told in figures. (H) o I will ask for everything, says Dr Wilfred de Souza. (H) o BJP fails to hold on to Margao. (H) o BJP office bearer, cop assaulted at Loliem. It also led to a day of hectic parleys when both the Luizinho Faleiro and Rane camps drew battle lines (along with GPCC chief Ravi Naik, who fancied himself as a consensus dark-horse candidate), reports the Gomantak Times, reporting on the situation on June 5 (Sunday). - DEATHS OBITUARIES - o CUNCOLIM: Demian Aleixo Fernandes of Kerkicotto, b 1955. o SANTA CRUZ: Joao Manuel Dias, ex-Asst Matron, GMC of St Agostinho
