Dear Goanetters,

Goanet celebrates its 11th anniversary today -- August 25, 2005. On behalf of
the Goanet Admin team, I'd like to thank all our members for making this
possible.

Goanet had a humble beginning in 1994 with only 20 members. Today, Goanet is
*the* public forum of choice for Goans worldwide for addressing important
issues. I'd like to thank you, our members, for your role in making this
possible. You've posted interesting articles and shared your opinions making
Goanet an interesting and vibrant forum. Indeed, Goanet has a great wealth of
information in its archives. We hope that you will continue to do the same in
the future.

Special thanks go to all our volunteers for their role in Goanet's success:

Frederick Noronha (Goa, India)
Viviana Coelho (San Francisco, CA, USA)
Bosco D'Mello (Toronto, Canada)
Daisy Rodrigues (CA, USA)
Michelle D'Souza (Boston, MA, USA)
Christina Pinto (Australia)
Vincente Fernandes (Goa, India)

We are very lucky to have such a dedicated group of people volunteering with
us. Having worked personally with each of these volunteers I can tell you that
they spend countless hours of working on Goanet. They do not look for
recognition or thanks of any sort. They just continue to work diligently day
in and day out. In my eyes, they are nothing short of heroes in our community.

What does the future hold for Goanet?

As you know, the Goanet mailing lists have been the mainstay of Goanet. We
will continue to expand this network to reach Goans wherever they may be. We
will also continue to work towards improving the quality of the forum.

Last year saw the Goanet take a huge step forward with the launch of
http://www.goanet.org/. This year, we plan to develop the website further. We
plan to improve our news service, introduce innovative ways to share
information and to launch community building projects in Goa.

I hope to see more of you volunteer with Goanet. You don't have to be computer
savvy. You just have to be willing to devote a little time to your community.
Together we can provide a valuable public service to our community.

Congratulations to Goanet on its 11th anniversary!

Best wishes,

[Goanet] THE DOG WATCH

2005-08-25 Thread Francis Lobo
THE DOG WATCH
Francis Lobo

Bird Watching is not for me --- I cannot walk with my nose in the air, life
has taught me to keep my eye on the ground. [There is the modern hazard of
slipping on a banana skin thrown by competition.] So I decided on Dog
Watching during my walks in the park in Southern California. During a single
walk I spotted 27 varieties of dogs --- maybe some were counted more than
once --- I am not skilled in recognizing dog faces or behinds. I learnt that
walking a dog is covered by at least two laws; the Leash Law that says that
dogs must be protected from getting lost by being tied to a human being the
second is that the person with the dog must carry a plastic bag to pick up
what the dog drops down.

If you don't believe that American dogs can get lost read some of the notices
stuck on lamp posts --- not by the dogs; they use lamp posts for other
purposes --- offering Rewards for the return of a lost dog. There was this
notice, I read, of a $ 1,000 reward when a cute little creature came into my
path, resembling the image in the notice. Before I could decide what to do, a
lady appeared from nowhere screamed, We have found her! with that went
my hopes for $ 1,000.

One can evaluate a nation’s culture by the way they treat animals.

In Southern California dogs are treated very well. It probably costs more to
keep a dog than a human being. Some come for walks with two, three or more
dogs. To solve the problem of the homeless in U.S.A., one TV commentator
suggested that people keep human beings instead of animals. They may be even
rewarded by getting a real German Shepard or Boxer or Alsatian! There are
homes for the homeless dogs volunteers periodically visit them to take them
for walks. I heard a guy complaining on a cell phone, I wish I was a dog.
Your dog goes for a walk with you every day I can't do it even once a week?
I have seen a dog getting a haircut --- I have to wait to return to India
for mine. There are schools for dogs where they are taught how to behave
play games by themselves like dropping a ball down a flight of stairs
collecting it instead of the tired lazy owner having to throw it to them.

What a beautiful dog! How old is he? Then followed an arrangement for mating
negotiations for when, where for how much --- as happens for arranged
marriages between a boy a girl in other parts of the world. Dogs have
brought people together interesting relationships can also result by looking
after someone's dog while they are out of station or on vacation.

Dogs offer tremendous opportunities to human beings to get employment make
money. There is scope to develop medicines for de-worming dogs, to develop dog
food, to give dogs strong teeth healthy bones, for innovative insurance
policies for dogs programs for dog medication healthcare.

The program The Planet's Funniest Animals on Animal Planet channel on TV
shows dogs playing net ball, doing acrobatics or a dance routine, imitating a
bull fight, catching Frisbees, solving basic mathematics problems, etc. etc.
with competitions prizes for the best performers. Psychiatrists are now
using animals to get retarded children to learn --- apparently children
today relate better with dogs than with teachers parents! While dogs are
fast learning new skills, American kids are apparently falling behind as
recent warnings are showing them losing out to kids from India China.

By seeing the close bond between Woman / Man Dogs in Southern California I
have renewed my Hope in the future of this planet --- perhaps people may
learn to live together in peace like the animals.

Resurrection Song revives Gospel spirit in GenX

Asian News International

Panjim, August 23, 2005

A Biblical play acted out in the famous tourist resort of Goa by a group of
youngsters has given a totally new dimension to the different aspects of
Christ's life starting with The Triumphant Entry to The Last Supper and eventual
crucification.

Titled Resurrection Song, the play performed by the group named Panjim parish,
attracted hundreds of people for its unique interplay of the gospel stories with
modern day life.

The play enthralled the residents of this small town, for its mix and match of
the two jarring different yet concurrent running themes.

The story revolved around a group of youngsters who come on to the stage in a
casual manner and then decide to enact the play and have some fun.

Alfwold Silveira, the play s director said that the technique not only added a
bit of freshness to the drama, but also helped them weave a sense of suspense
into themes that were age old and have been told to them to them over the
generations by their grandfathers.

The uniqueness of the play is that it moves in two time bands the present
times, and 2000 years ago, when Jesus Christ was around. So the structure of the
play is such that they have actors who come in the beginning, who discuss the
play, talk about it and then say lets try it out . They go backstage, get into
their costumes and then start acting out the play, either through song and
dialogue they bring out the scene which were done 2000 years ago, said Alfwold
Silveira, the play s director.

The play started with The Triumphant Entry of Jesus and moves on to The Last
Supper, Betrayal by Judas and The Sacrifice.

For the audiences, the effect was electric, as it provided them with an
impromptu play conceptualized, scripted and enacted almost instantly in front of
their eyes. People who had come to watch the watch the play said that it was a
splendid act with colourful songs and dances, adding to the flavour.

It was very good. The music was very good and what I like was the way they
change the scenes every thing was so nicely done. Even the light system was
good, added Jonathan, a school student.

Clerics have also appreciated the play for its ethics and novelty and said that
the director has in a very apt manner spread the message of Christ.

I like the casual way in which the play starts. It is not like the usual formal
way to start a play. It starts in a casual way. It is interspersed as if you are
practising and yet you are performing, said Father Dominic Alvares, a Parish
priest.

Historians state that gospel plays were written and performed in churches for
new converts. The plays were so popular that they were written into the gospel
accounts.

But, now this tradition has come a long way to become an integral part of the
Christian people and people like Alfwold Silveira have only started to bring
changes to make those stories lively in tune with the contemporary times.

students who had assembled for the French Day celebrations at St. Xavier's
College, Mapusa. The occasion was marked by a programme organised by the
students which included a group song, a mock fashion show and a poetry

CULINARY CORNER: Global tastes -- Barbecue beef short ribs
-

Here is a delicious American recipe for barbecue beef short ribs.
It is so tender that is piratically melts in your mouth.

  3 1/2 to 4 pounds beef short ribs, 1/4 cup flour, 1 1/2
teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon pepper, 2 tablespoons
vegetable oil, 2 medium onions, sliced, 1/2 cup dry red
wine, 1/2 cup chili sauce, 3 tablespoons brown sugar, 3
tablespoons vinegar, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce,
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard, 1/2 teaspoon chili powder, 2
  tablespoons flour.

Combine 2 tablespoons flour, the salt, and pepper in a bowl or food
storage bag. Dredge or toss ribs with the flour mixture. Heat oil
in large skillet over medium high heat; add ribs and brown on all
sides. Pour off excess fat. In crock pot, combine ribs, onions,
wine, chili sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce,
mustard, and chili powder. Cover and cook on LOW for 7 to 9 hours.
Turn to HIGH. - (LAST STEP) Dissolve 2 tablespoons flour in 1 or 2
tablespoons flour. Stir into crock pot. Cook on HIGH for about 10
to 15 minutes longer, or until slightly thickened. Serve with
noodles or rice. For those of you that do not have a crock pot,
you can speed up the process by putting everything in a pressure
cooker and turn off after 2 whistles. Please note that the
pressure cooker has to cool down completely before you open it for
the LAST STEP as stated above.

Cops to be trained to improve conviction rate
--
The Chief Minister, Mr Pratapsingh Rane, today informed the state
assembly that the government would provide better training to the
policemen in investigating criminal cases, for better conviction rate
in the state.

He made this statement while replying to the queries raised by the
members of the House during discussion on demands for home,
police, jails, fire services, vigilance, home guards, revenue,
collectorates (North and South), election office, state election
commission, printing and stationary, Rajya Sainik Board and
Goa Public Men's Corruption (Inquiries and Investigation) Commission.

The Chief Minister said that according to statistics the crime rate
has come down in the state but that his government was not satisfied
with it and would make efforts to bring it down further. He also said
that the police have been directed to come down heavily on drug
related cases.

Mr Rane further said that the police have already acted against
flesh trade and deported those found indulging in it, including
some Bangla-deshis. He also urged the members not to pressurize
police in their investigation and said that members of ruling side
have kept away from seeking favours.

With regards to failure of the government in bringing in Goa Police Act,
the Chief Minister said that there was problem between two all
India Services - IAS and IPS - and the bill passed by the state
assembly has been scuttled by one of them. He also said that
he would verify the status of the bill which was sent for presidential
assent.

He said that he agreed with the suggestions made by Mr Aleixo
Sequeira with regards to not placing young drug addicts with
hardened criminals as also isolating HIV positive suspects and
criminals taken into police custody.

Mr Rane also said that no bogus cases were filed by the police
adding further that a case of abuse of a Scheduled Caste lady
would be registered by the police and investigated. He further said
that police would deal firmly with rave parties in the state.

He also said that he would inquire into complaints of misuse of funds
from the police welfare fund and if it was proved that funds were
misused by any official he would order recovery of funds from
the concerned officer adding further that the issue of insurance to
police personnel would be looked into.

With regards to bring in traffic discipline on Goan roads, he said
that police were training school students in traffic management
and discipline and that helmet rule was being enforced on roads
outside the city limit in the larger interest of two wheeler riders,
many of who succumb to head injuries in accident due to
non-wearing of helmets.

Mr Rane said that multipurpose identity cards would be issued
to the people of the state, which will do away with the requirement
of production of residential certificate every time a person is
required to avail benefits from the government.

He said that though the previous government had announced
Ambedkar Awas Yojana and collected Rs 500 from each applicant,
it did not acquire land for the purpose. He also said that his
government would implement Indira Awas Yojana under 20-point
programme and allot 100 square metre plot to the houseless for
construction of houses.

He also said that his government has issued notices for closure
of a casino, which was operating without licence on land even
as he said that government would do everything possible to curb
misuse of mobile phones by young children.

The Chief Minister also said that jail manual was being drafted
by a team of experts and the progress of it was being monitored
by the Goa bench of Bombay High Court. He also said that
government would strengthen vigilance department for speedier
completion of cases referred to it.

Mr Rane further informed the House that steps have been initiated
for updating land records and that all the vacancies in the land
settlement department would be filled by giving equal opportunities
to surveyors who were appointed on contract basis.

He also said that a law would be enacted to give a deadline to
the mundkars the land allotted to them at rates prevalent in 1976
and in case they failed to buy it within the time frame they would
have to buy it at market rates.

He also said that government would act strictly with squatters,
even as he assured that Kumeri cases would be settled in short
time.

All the cut motions moved by the opposition benches were defeated
when they were put to vote on the floor of the House by the Speaker,

When Genoa applied to IATA- the Montreal-based International Air
Travel Association - for their three-letter code, Goa was still a
Portuguese colony with Dabolim basically operating as a military
airport. Likewise, Genoa also beat us to the draw- leaving is with
the GOI code after we decided to use Dabolim also as a civilian
 airport.

Dabolim was never used by the Portuguese as a military airport - in fact,
the Portuguese Air Force was not present in Goa. During some years after
Goa's integration in the Republic of India, when Dabolim was taken over by
the Indian Navy, it was named INS Hansa (and it still is); and, when it was
open to civilian traffic, the civilian part became known as Dabolim Airport,
with the three-letter code of DBL. It was only years later that it came to
be renamed Goa Airport, with the code GOI. Genoa Airport in Italy always had
its code as GOA.

India's monsoon season draws Arab guests

Tuesday, August 23, 2005
By Yasmine El-Rashidi, The Wall Street Journal

PANAJI, India -- Haya Bin Hammad's smile faded as she stepped off the plane here
to start a family vacation. Her Barbie umbrella was already open, but there
wasn't a drop of rain in sight.

What is this? Haya's father muttered as he saw the disappointment on his
7-year-old daughter's face.

Fortunately for the Bin Hammad family, the weather was cooperating by the time
they left the airport. Torrential rain beat down on them. Look, Daddy! God has
sent us rain! Haya said, beaming at her father.

The Bin Hammads live in the United Arab Emirates, a tiny federation of states in
one of the driest regions on earth. Oil money in the U.A.E. and other Persian
Gulf countries has financed everything from world-class restaurants and
skyscrapers to a 25-story indoor ski slope. But even though money can't buy
rain, it can buy parched Arabs the next best thing: a monsoon vacation.

The Indian state of Goa first started marketing itself as a monsoon destination
about five years ago. After the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York
and Washington, many Gulf Arabs began vacationing closer to home, turned off
from their usual vacation spots in the West by tightened visa restrictions and
worries about how they might be received.

Resorts in India and northern Pakistan began seeing more Arabs eager to
experience the novelty of rain. Posters went up in travel agencies in the Gulf
nations of U.A.E., Qatar and Kuwait, beckoning residents to Come Feel the
Rain. Goa, on India's west coast, says it attracted 55,000 Arab visitors during
last year's monsoon season, nearly three times as many as two years earlier.

We've seen steady growth in business from them, all of it during the monsoon
months, between June and early September, says Pamela Mascarenhas, deputy
director of Goa's state department of tourism.

But this year, the rains took a deadly turn. A weeklong deluge at the end of
July caused floods and landslides that killed more than 1,000 people in parts of
India. Hundreds of others have died from water-borne diseases. Hardest hit was
Mumbai, north of Goa. In the wake of the disaster, many tourists canceled
vacation trips, although Goa's popular coastal areas escaped with relatively
minor damage.

Many beach resorts are already filling up again. Arab families are particularly
drawn to luxurious complexes featuring elaborate waterparks with terraced
pools and connecting slides. As rain falls, fathers and their children romp
through the labyrinthine pools. Mothers and older sisters, covered in black
robes and headscarves, lounge nearby without umbrellas, eating ice cream and
sipping nonalcoholic drinks.

The Indian tourist industry has created tours and activities aimed at
rain-starved Arab visitors. Open-air discotheques are billed as rain dance
floors. Tour operators peddle sight-seeing trips, or rain walks, as relaxing
excursions for introspection and family bonding. A manager at the Hyatt Goa
Resort and Spa, Vijay Anand, says of the off-season guests: We know what they
want.

On a recent Sunday at a neighboring resort, Arab families head to the terrace
tables for brunch, while non-Arab guests sit indoors listening to live music.

If we wanted to be in the air conditioning, we could have just stayed in
Kuwait! says Sheikha Al-Shaer, who is visiting with her husband and three
children. The Al-Shaers and the Bin Hammads say their friends recommended Goa
for a monsoon holiday.

The highlight of the Bin Hammad family's first day was the outdoor rain shower
-- a spa-like experience in a roofless tiled room entered through their
bungalow. I'd say Haya had about 10 showers today, Mr. Bin Hammad laughs. He
compares the joy to that of Westerners who frolic in the snow.

Day two brought sporadic downpours. When it began raining shortly after
breakfast, Haya dragged her father and 18-year-old uncle, Mohammed Hassan, to
the pool. Mr. Hassan plugged in his iPod earphones, grabbed a chaise lounge, and
stretched out to soak up the rain. This was his routine for the next three days.
The sound of rain is relaxing, he said.

Haya and her father jumped into the pool as Haya's mother, Amjad, watched from a
nearby table. The resort staff had organized a contest to see whether Haya or
her dad would be first to fill plastic tubs with rainwater. Father and daughter
lifted beach buckets above their heads to catch the rain, then waded to the side
of the pool to dump them into the bigger tubs.

Haya won. Her prize: a blue-colored monsoon mania rain drink. She says she
would like to live somewhere where it rains all the time. At home it's very hot
and I'm not allowed to play outside because my mother says it's not good for me.
Here, I can play outside all day because it's raining and it's good for me, she
explained.

When the rain started to taper off, many guests emerged from the

[Goanet] Roman Script Movement (RSM) in Goa

website:www.tskk.org

Do you know RSM? It stands for Roman Script Movement.

Why RSM? Roman script Konkani was the foundation on which Konkani was
recognized by Central govt. Only in Goa Language act of 1987, for the
reasons best known to Konknni Porjecho Avaz (KPA) Roman script was ignored
and Devanagari was inserted as the official script for Konkani. Some Roman
script writers have said the it was a Conspiracy by vested interest group.
Therefore now RSM demands to rectify the past SIN by amending the Language
Act of Goa (LAG)1987.

Present situation: So far none of the local politicians have openly
supported the move to amend LAG. Their silence could be interpreted has
indirect support to RSM. In Bible Jesus says, Those who are not against us
are with us. Mr. Eduardo Faleiro's, (an ex. M.P. of Goa) statement
supporting official status to dual scripts for Goa has been published in
Herald daily (25th august) page 4.

What has been done so far: 1.RSM has sent memorandum to 40 MLAs and M.Ps of
Goa. RSM members have met a few politicians. They are going meet other MLAs.

Future course of Action: Have patience. Wait for a surprise!
ROMAN SCRIPT MOVEMENT (RSM)
RSM demands from Goa Govt. the following:
1. Goa Government should give equal and official status to Konkani written
in Devanagari and Roman scripts. For this the Govt. should modify the
Language Act accordingly. The present Language Act,1987 2. (c) reads
Konkani language means Konkani language in Devanagari script. We propose
the following amendment to 2. (c):
Konkani language means Konkani language in Devanagari and Roman scripts.
2. Goa Government recognizes Marathi Akademi as the official Akademi for
Marathi in Goa and gives grants. Similarly, Goa Government must recognize
Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) as the official NGO of Konkani in Roman
script and give the same amount of grants which the Govt. gives to Goa
Konkani Akademi (GKA) and Marathi Akademi.
3. So far, Goa Govt. has not appointed the president of GKA from the Roman
script group. The term of the present GKA president will be completed in
the month of November 2005. Hence this time Govt. must appoint the
president of GKA from Roman script writers.
4. GKA is a Govt. institution. At present a nominee of the All India
Konkani Parishad is the ex-officio member of GKA. GKA Constitution must be
amended to include a nominee of Dalgado Konknni Akademi as the ex-officio
member of GKA. Goa Govt. appoints three eminent persons as ex-officio
members of GKA. While nominating these three persons Govt. should give
equal representation to Devanagari and Roman script.
5. For the last many years Kala Akademi (KA) has stopped giving awards to
books written in Roman script. KA should be ordered to give awards to Roman
script Konkani writers, and extend to them all other projects and schemes
which are available to Konkani in Devanagari script.
6. Kala Akademi gives Gomantak Sharada Puroskar to Konkani writers in
Devanagari script and Marathi writers. In future KA must consider and give
this prestigious award to Roman script writers and artists as well.
7. Kala Akademi is established to promote the culture of Goa. Hence it
should be asked to promote cultural forms of roman script Konkani.
8. Govt. must name its new theatre for the performing arts in Margão, in
honour of Late João Agostinho Fernandes, who is popularly known as Pai
Tiatrist.
9. Tiatr is the most popular form of theatre in Goa. Therefore Govt. must
promote it.
10. Govt. institutions and Govt. departments while publishing Konkani books,
should publish them in both Devanagari script and Roman script.
11. In school syllabus, lessons from Roman script Konkani must be given
equal representation without changing the language and style. In colleges
and university the syllabus should include Konkani literature written in
Roman script.
12. Konkani has two representatives in Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi. Goa Govt.
sends three names to Sahitya Akademi as its nominees. Let the Goa Govt.
send names of Devanagari writers and Roman script writers by turns.
13. To promote Konkani films the Govt. must establish a separate board with
equal representation of artists from both scripts.

RECENT ITEMS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST ON GOANET. BY CORNEL DACOSTA

Amidst the hype and excitement about World Goa Day and about its
origins, Ancy S. D'Souza Paladka provides a brief but interesting
article on Konkani Day celebrations held in Mumbai. In several related
articles there is a very full discussion on the relative merits of using
the Devanagari, other Indian, and Roman scripts for Konkani usage.

Two further interesting articles which also provide websites, and are
drawn from available literature, relate to:
a) Portugal's history and its impact on Goa, and
b) the Anglicisation of Portuguese names.
Both articles provide many insights.

A debate on the advantages, or not, of medical tourism in India receives
some very informed thought. Goan Voice (UK) readers may wish to pay
particular attention to this theme.

Likewise, GV(UK) readers and Goanet readers are urged to comment on a
repeated theme that, Goa has all the ingredients to become the Internet
hotspot in India. Sadly, the state has become yet another victim of
bureaucratic indifference.

Finally, matters such as property ownership, tourism, community problem
solving etc, in Goa, receive some useful comments from Francis Lobo by
way of a reply to an earlier article by Ms Couto.

We stayed at a place called 'Day's Inn' (its got branches all over the

apartments online. This is the most popular site used by indians in st
louis. http://www.myilaaka.com/ - check it out, u MAY find lots of info here
regarding Houston Texas too.
Many of the street corners have boxes like our Post boxes where we post our
letters. These boxes have booklets with all information about apartments in
that area - U can just open the box and pick one - its free.
I can give you some shopping links :

The Goan may go out of Goa but
the Goa will not go out of the Goan.
O

The Goan may go out of Goa but the Goa will not go out
of the Goan. World Goa Day founded by UK based Goan
NRI Rene Barreto is an endeavour to bring together
in solidarity Goans settled worldwide is a celebration
of all things Goan; art and culture, customs and
traditions, music, literature, cuisine and the Goan
himself. Celebrated worldwide on August 20th, Goa
World Day is gaining momentum all over the world with
Goans that are homesick for their motherland.

And why should the heart of the sentiment, Goa itself
be left behind? Our very own World Goa Day event is
happening on August 28th at Ida and Edwin Fonseca’s
Hotel Astoria, Assagao, Mapusa; 11 am is when
celebrations commence. Kicked off by Wendell
Rodricks, the event is a modish Sunday brunch-style
theme party complete with quintessential Goan food,
wines and the indispensable drink of the ‘susegad’,
feni. There will also be a cultural program featuring
Konkani music and artistes like Lulu and the Fortes
Trio, Wilmix and Sharon etc.

The event will also showcase the work of photographers
like Ravindra Salgaonkar, Prasad Pankar, Nirmal
Kulkarni, DJ Sasha, Alister Miranda, Joel de Souza
and William Rodrigues; with the theme ‘Lenspeak: Goa’,
it is an endeavour to view Goa from the perspective
of their lens. All in all, the event is the ‘Gift of
Goa’ presented to you on a platter. A combination
of modern lifestyle nuances and old world charm will
ensure that you’re all set to rock to the rhythm of
Goa. All at a price of Rs. 250 per head that is
inclusive of entry and brunch.

The event is being organised by Think Geek Media and
Productions. Director and journalist Ethel da Costa
elaborates on the concept; “This is an event that
aims at building up overall solidarity among Goans. We
want people to get together and take pride in being
a community that is celebrated worldwide. The
catchphrase here is ‘think global, focus local’.
Local talent, local resources, local issues; this
is a platform where all these integrate and work
at bringing back the harmony and the synthesis that
epitomize the Goan spirit.”

Ethel also delves further into the cause by
elucidating that this is more than just an
event to showcase Goa and its facets. It is
an attempt at making Goa visible, so that it
regains its warranted honour. “Goans that
have had the best of all worlds travelled should
lend their experiences in making correct
administrative and political decisions for the
betterment of our society. Too many Goan
youngsters want to try their luck outside in
search of seemingly greener horizons. These
should consciously stay in Goa and take charge
of the situation, call the shots; to enhance Goan
lifestyle, to elevate its position to that due
to it.”

WE ARE PROUD OF YOU ,

   WE are also PROUD

  MAKING WORLD GOA DAY
 a GOAN SOLIDARITY DAY !

Sania cruises into quarters
August 25, 2005 12:07 IST

India's tennis ace Sania Mirza beat Israel's Shahar Peer 7-6, 6-1 to move
into the quarter-finals of the $75,000 Forest Hills Women's Classic in New
York.

Sania, who is ranked 50th in the WTA Tour rankings, will next face Italy's
Roberta Vinci. The Indian is seeded third in the tournament which has a
draw of only 16 players.

The top two seeds -- Akiko Morigami and Ana Smashnova -- were knocked out
on the second day of the tournament as they went down to Alexa Glatch and
Lucie Safarova respectively.

The victory helped Sania avenge an earlier loss to Peer in the qualifying
rounds at Stanford. Sania was beaten 2-6, 6-7 at the $585,000 WTA Tour
event in Standord last month.

[Goanet] True Goans have a snooze!

2005-08-25 Thread Gabe Menezes
http://www.navhindtimes.com/stories.php?part=newsStory_ID=08232
Navhind Times on the Web
Siesta Time
Posted on Tuesday, August 23, 2005.

BESIDES fish-curry rice, football and the fiery feni, have you ever
wondered what is the other single thing that is so dear to the heart
of a Goan? Yes it is the afternoon siesta. It wont be wrong to say
that you are not a true Goan if you do not have a snooze in the
afternoon.

Unlike in cities like Mumbai and even neighbouring Belgaum, where
markets are bustling with activity during the afternoon, market places
in Goa resemble a ghost house and the streets wear a deserted look.
Most of the shopkeepers are in their homes enjoying a siesta after a
hearty meal. Goans love their mid-day snooze just as they love their
football. It is probably one of the reasons why Goans have gained the
sobriquet of a susegado people. I sometime wonder whether it was the
Portuguese, who ruled Goa for over 400 years, who handed over this
trait to us Goans as they left the shores. Many Goans probably do not
mind going to bed late at night, but they wouldnt trade an afternoon
siesta for anything in the world.

It is probably one of the reasons why several of the office-goers who
for some reason cannot have their daily dose of a mid-day snooze doze
off in the office on their work table. Be that as it may, having an
afternoon snooze could be the wisest thing one could do during the
day. A mid-day snooze rejuvenates the body and more importantly the
mind. One is more alert, more active and hence more productive after a
siesta. The forty winks serves as a vital energizer for the body, mind
and probably even the soul. The wisest thing any employer could do
would be to encourage his staff to have a snooze during the break. He
could also provide beds for those employees who do not go home during
the lunch-break. But then there is a risk involved if such a step is
taken. Employees could be spending more time on their beds than at
their work table. Such workers probably believe that sleep is a
priceless treasure; the more one has it the better it is.

Having an afternoon siesta could also mean that employees would be
arriving late for work during the afternoon session. Hence in several
offices one sees the employees trooping in at about 2.30 p.m. even
though the office opens at 2 p.m. sharp. Another difficulty is that
these workers would seem drowsy, some of them even half asleep during
the afternoon. Hence they have a rejuvenating cup of tea before
getting down to the business at hand.

Like a true Goan I too see to it that I do not miss my afternoon
siesta even if it has to last for a few minutes. If not I could be
dozing at the work place right through the afternoon. If you happen to
travel by bus in the afternoon you will probably see half the
passengers in the bus snoozing. The other half could be praying that
the bus driver at the wheels does not snooze.

Cheers,

Gabe Menezes.

Hi Eugene,
Some netters have been forced to send posts privately because, in my
experience, posts do get rejected rather inconsistently on this forum. A
simple reply of thanks to one who provided an answer to a query can most
unexpectedly be deemed to be a private response and face rejection. I now
avoid the absurdity of this kind of risk but hope this reply to you gets
through as it addresses not just you but many others. Likewise, I am forced
to thank Cecil re his comment on my post on World Goa Day privately and not

[Goanet] Re: Roman script Konkani... in new form

2005-08-25 Thread Eugene Correia
Since the Dalgado Konkani Academy hasn't said anything
regarding the new Roman Konkani script, it's fair to
assure the body has accepted the script.
Like Fred, I too am totally taken by surprise by
TSKK's about turn or rather a change in direction,
from first pushing from a devnagiri script to now
promoting the new Roman Konkani script.
Even the late Prof. Lourdino Rodrigues advocated
devnagiri script, and the TSKK published his work in
that script. I am not sure if the learned professor's
full dictonary has been published.
TSKK's earlier thrust for devnagiri was probably
because the devnagiri script captured the phonetics
well. If the same effect is available through the two
added symbols to the Roman script it may be wise to
follow this script.
Will Goem be written as Goƒhy? (I tried to put the
symbol over the letter o, but can't in plain text. I
copied from Microsoft World, but the result is what I
got above).
Would this new script make Shenoi Goembab turn in his
grave? Or, could his book, The Triumph of Konkani,
renamed as The Crimp of Konkani?

[Goanet] Re: PROMINENT INDUSTRIALIST MR, V D CHOWGULE turns 90

2005-08-25 Thread Frederick Noronha (FN)
Hi Godfrey JI: I'm not sure the caste origins of those named below are
particularly relevant in discussing business achievement. What is the
point you're trying to make? Other than the obvious reality that the big
guns in the world of business came from diverse backgrounds?

gonsalvesgodfreyji at yahoo.co.in

Goa's economy is synonymous with the three V's.
Mr Vishwasrao Dattajirao Chowgule, a Maratha, born 15
August 1915 ancestral home in Kolhapur, Maharashtra,
who started life as a tally clerk,in Mormugao Harbour.

Then late Mr Vasudev M Salgaocar,a Gaud Saraswat
Brahmin born 13.5.1916 to 13.10.1984 a native of

Finally late Vasantrao S Dempo receipient of
Padmashri, a Gaud Saraswat Brahmin born with a silver

Having said that, my doubts that you have mixed up on the
Marathi-Maratha labels seems to be confirmed by this Wikipedia entry:

Quote:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maratha

Maratha is a kshatriya (warrior) caste of Marathi-speaking people
primarily residing in the plains and hills of India's western state of
Maharashtra. Marathas and Marathis are confused by many people to be one
and the same. It must be noted that Marathis are any people speaking
Marathi language while Marathas are only people belonging to Maratha
caste.

The Marathas attained historical primacy in the Maratha empire during
the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when the Bhonsle family took
control of much of western and northern India. The Maratha empire was
allied to the British, but then fell out with them and fought a series
of Anglo-Maratha Wars.

End of quote.

A number of caste groupings in Goa, following the Sanskritisation trend,
add Kshatriya (e.g. Kshatriya Bhandari) or Brahmin to their name. While
this sounds better, it doesn't change the reality of a rather rigid
caste hierarchy. It is important for us not to give credence to theories
of caste-based superiority and inferiority, though sometimes caste can
be useful to understand the context better.

Anyway, I do believe that peoples' often-irrelevant backgrounds are also
used and misused to build arguments which aren't particularly true.

Goa's business class has morphed much over the years, across caste and
community, as the list of who was at the helm of the ninety-year-old Goa
Chambers of Commerce and Industry (with a different name earlier) would
make clear. But what would perhaps be more interesting is a study on the
links between the dominant political forces and the business elite, both
in the pre-1961 and post-1961 eras.

Also, I'm not sure everyone would agree with the lavish praise you
shower, which seems to go along with the view that kings, prime
ministers, business elites and other dominant forces are the main
players that create history. Tens of thousands of nameless and faceless
people of Goa have also done so. And, above all, history has been
created (specially in Goa's case) by a whole set of happenstances over
which this small state had absolutely no control.

For instance, wouldn't Goa's history have been different
if the Japanese didn't lose World War II and didn't need
all that iron ore to rebuild their ruins? Would tourism have
grown (even if mainly numerically and not sustainably) if
Kashmir and Sri Lanka (the main competitors) didn't have
their insurgencies around the same time in the 'eighties?

Just a little thinking aloud... FN

Re: [Goanet] If you're a VSNL user...

2005-08-25 Thread Vincente Fernandes
If one wants internet access for a month what is the best plan available in Goa.
If 1 month plan is not available can that be used by anybody in goa or
can the unused plan mintues or offer give away to somebody?

Can someone care to explain what are the Prepaid SIM Cell Phone offers
available in Goa? Any link to any website will be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Vincente,
Incidentally, VSNL is now privately controlled, after this profitable
company was sold to the Tatas. Service is polite, but costs are higher.
A hundred-hour account costs in the region of Rs 800, compared to Rs 600
or less for BSNL. One of VSNL's useful product which might be useful if
 you're a heavy web-surfer is the three-month unlimited pack, for a
little over Rs 900. (Of course, this covers only Internet time; phone
 bills are extra.)

More fiction (R. Goswami). Just give us 24/7 power
and electricity. We do not need to be near hubs.

I would strongly urge folks to do this. Mr. Percival

hold a special place in my heart. I am one of the
founding members of this association. It has been a
delight for me to watch it grow almost entirely
through the dogged, single-minded and selfless efforts
of Mr. Noronha. When the Halley's Comet came to Goa
the last time we had only one clanky little four and a
half inch Dobsonian reflector from Calcutta, which I
carried along from rooftop to rooftop in and around
Panaji, holding comet and stargazing sessions that
were attended by 80 year-old ladies eager to see what
they had missed when they were 4.

Folks, let us buy Mr. Percival Noronha and our Goan
friends of Astronomy a nice big telescope. I know
which one they need, and I will tell you how much it
costs tomorrow.

Cheers,

Santosh
