[Goanet] Why smaller places (towns and villages too) need their own radio...
It has long been my view that media diversity and multiplicity of voices is specially needed in smaller places, away from the mainstream. Places like Goa. In this context, I have been involved for the last 6-7 years with a national campaign to legalise community radio in India. We seek you help on the petition below. A signation from you would go a long way! FN - We need your help! The current Community Radio Policy of India is discriminatory towards communities as it bars community members, community-based organizations, non-government organizations and other civil society groups from applying for licenses to operate low power community radio stations. The policy holds that only well established educational institutions/organizations can apply for a community radio license. So, what we have in the name of Community Radio is in reality Campus Radio. Several organizations, academicians and individuals have been actively campaigning for communities' right to access the airwaves for the last seven years. They have made innumerable representations to the Ministry of Information Broadcasting and to the Broadcast Regulator (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India-TRAI). They have also written and submitted several drafts to reform the existing Community Radio Policy so as to include community rights in it. In spite of these efforts the government continues to be non-committal and discriminatory. We urge you join hands with us to mount adequate pressure on the government to end this discrimination against the largely rural and poor communities. Please express your solidarity by signing the Urging The Inclusion Of The Right Of The Communities Within The Community Radio Policy petition at http://www.PetitionOnline.com/comradio/petition.html Sincerely, Stalin K.DRISHTI MEDIA COLLECTIVE, Ahmedabad Preeti Soni KUTCH MAHILA VIKAS SANGATHAN, Kutch Ashish Sen VOICES, Bangalore Arun Mehta RADIOPHONY, New Delhi Vinod Pavarala UNIVERSITY OF HYDERABAD Vickram Crishna RADIOPHONY, Mumbai B P Sanjay UNIVERSITY OF HYDERABAD Frederick NoronhaINDEPENDENT JOURNALIST, Goa Basheerhamad ShadrachONE WORLD SOUTH ASIA, New Delhi - 1995-2005: Ten years of waiting for community radio in India! [Goanet] Re: NOW BISHOP OF PUNE - on Konkani Roman script
Godfrey, May be with these recent endorsements there should be a strong push for Marathi in the Roman Script ! As the Kolis of Maharashtra say: Konkanath dur daha mylaver basha budelthe - In the Konkan the language changes every 10 miles. In view of this predicament and the high potential economic impact of the Roman script lowering the barriers to language acceptance and adoption esp by foreign/outside businessmen, investors, Marathi diaspora, (esp the younger generation who have been born and brought up abroad), It is imperative that Marathi be popularized in the Roman script ! Offence is r a better form of defence in Hockey and soccer, its about time we go on the offensive for the Roman script for Marathi in Maharashtra ! We have an enlightened Archbishop in Felipe Neri Ferrao - he will do the right thing for Goa and Goans - there should be no sadness or second guessing over his decisions. Best Regards, Carmo
[Goanet] Star Cruise heading for Goa!
And now, finally in India Samyukta Bhowmick / New Delhi August 27, 2005 The cruise market looks to expand and make itself more accessible with the launch of Star Cruises in India. Star Cruises, the popular Malaysia-based cruise company, is starting operations from India from September this year, the first cruise company to do so. Cruising is becoming a popular holiday option for the growing segment of Indian tourists who have grown tired of the well-worn Singapore/Switzerland/London tourist track. So far though, only international cruise companies have been represented here: the likes of Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises, Island Cruises, and, from early this year, the luxury cruise Silversea. These cruises are all long-haul and sail to places such as the Caribbean, the Norwegian fjords and the Meditteranean islands, and are priced accordingly, but with the entry of Star Cruises, the market may suddenly have become much more accessible in terms of price as well as time. From 2nd October 2005 to 30th April 2006 (the ship will only do showcase cruises from September to October this year), the luxury liner SuperStar Libra (a 42,000 ton ship with 740 cabins and a passenger capacity of 1,480), will sail from Mumbai to, according to the cruise you pick, Lakshadweep, Goa or simply around the Indian Ocean near Mumbai. A four-night cruise, departing every Sunday from Mumbai, will stop at Lakshwadeep and Goa for a day each; a two-night cruise, departing every Thursday, will sail from Mumbai up to Goa and then back; and you can even take a one-night cruise from Mumbai and back. [Goanet] Re: We need more Goans to graduate from IITs for the greater good of Goa.....
Hi Oscar, I do not recollect reading that post or the URL. But it would be worth posting it again. I empathize with you with the feeling of lack of support from the Goan community. But as a quick response, if there are any Goans who seek some advice, they can follow the dialogue on cyberGoa and find out who is doing what in which field and communicate with them directly. My suggestion to use Goan social events, takes that mentoring one step further and provides some more personal interactions, especially with Goans who are not on cyberGoa. Kind Regards, GL JosenoronC at aol.com wrote: Dr. Lawrence: Please do not take this personally. I did not receive one single comment, whether supporting, providing constructive criticism or showing the impracticality of the ideas presented. Regards! [Goanet] The Sky is not so far - I
the sky is not so far... SKY HIGH, one of India's leading music-group will feature at the (NYC Nite) on 1st September 2005 at Crowne Plaza - Farwaniya. We bring you an exclusive synopsis on these Goan showmen who have proved in music world, 'the sky is not so far...' In 1997, five young, versatile and talented lads came together to form the group called 'SkyHigh' with an intention of limiting themselves to the sky. They performed their very first gig at the SUMMER STORM '97 at Colva Beach and from then on looked at the grand task of forging ahead with all their dreams. They played the NEW YEARS EVE functions three years consecutively in the capital city of India at the PARK ROYAL and the ASHOKAS, and at Chiplun for the MILLENNIUM EVE DANCE at the ENRON POWER PLANT. They also performed for charity shows, rock concerts and relief fund concerts alongside other top Indian bands at various cities in India like Kolhapur, Belgaum and Mumbai; played at Bangalore for the 2001 HSBC Golf Tournament Ceremony. The group has also catered to foreign tourists at cultural events in most of the 5 star hotels of Goa. Another feather in their cap is their successful tour of the MIDDLE-EAST; they have entertained crowds at Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain with different renditions of dance music. They pride on their ability to play rare and aurally pleasing electronic music from all over the world. And now there's no looking back at the international level as they have shows lined up in Kenya and London in the near future. Expatriate Indians in Kuwait have a chance to watch these stars on 1st September in a show that promises an evening worth of eclectic music ranging from rock to roots to the Goan traditional genres - music so good you'll wanna square-dance to it... 'The Sky is not so far' will continue with a brief account on each star of SkyHigh. [Goanet] Festival of Plants
The 14th annual FESTIVAL OF PLANTS FLOWERS was inaugurated at SFX School, Siolim-Goa, on Saturday 20 August, 2005 at 12.00 noon by Dr.Ajit Shirodkar, Chairman of Western Ghats Kokum Foundation. He also released a book entitled A Little About Kokum edited by Miguel Braganza and Rena Fernandes. The theme plant of this festival this year is Kokum or Bind'nam [ Garcinia indica]. Many plant lovers visited the three day exhibition that followed. A large number of students from schools in Bardez had brought in entries for the potted plants. The hall is full of ornamental, flowering, spice and medicinal plants. The entries were judged by Dr.Sudhanshu Saigal and Miguel Braganza , Vice-President and President of the Botanical Society of Goa to which the GREEN HERITAGE Eco Club of SFX School is affiliated. The plant set up has been done by student volunteers who have mastered the art through experience. They are guided by Mr. Robert D'Mello. The Principal of the HSS Fr. Paul Sagayam, MSFS and the Headmaster of the High School,Fr.Santos, MSFS, are fully involved in all aspects of the festival, from planning to placing the pots. An essay competition held earlier has already been judged by Ms.Christabelle Borges, who has recently written a dissertation on the subject for the award of B.Sc. in Horticulture from YCMOU, Nashik. There were on the spot competitions in fruit arrangement/fruit bowl decor and fruit fancy dress. The tiny tots participated with great enthusiasm in the fancy dress competition. The theme slogan is Say NO to Cola. Say YES to Cocum or simply Drink Coke-ummm. Amrut Kokum or Xarope de Brindao or Kokum syrup will be served at the venue so that everyone can taste the difference. The inaugural cheer is courtesy Diogo Seby Pinto, the teacher who is always in the forefront of the Festivalleading by example. A booklet entitled A little about KOKUM Garcinia indica edited by Miguel and Rena Fernandes, Agriculture Information Officer[Ela Farm] and Treasurer of BSG and published by GREEN HERITAGE Eco Club of SFX affiliated to BSG, was released on the occasion. The cover is designed by Sunil of Diamond Publication and the inside illustration is by cartoonist Alexyz Fernandes, who was inspired by a BSG Plant Show and conceived this festival in August,1992. [Goanet] Advertising Standards
Dear Goanetters, It is indeed gratifying to note that the District Collector -South Goa, Mr. J.B.Singh , has directed the UB Group in Goa to remove the hoardings/billboards in South Goa.[GT 19 Aug, page3 Col.3 4] Those interested in viewing the barely clad[ pun intended] body of the well-known model can do so outside the newspapers that are also read by children. many Goans who have supported Fredrick Noronha's campaign to promote the reading habit amongst students may not have anticipated having such advertisements as the daily fare. It also shows to what extent the Editors of newspapers in Goa actually bend to the needs of the advertising segment. Or is it that they have no control over the content of their newspapers? Equally gratifying is th fact that at least the Bailancho Saad[ Women's Voice , an NGO] and the BJP Mahila Morcha mustered the courage to register a police complaint, conduct a public meeting and take out a procession respectively to protest the advertisements.[GT 18 August,2005 page3, 5-column bottom spread]. The other champions of democracy and freedom from exploitation are still choking on the wads of money that the UB Group pumps in the form of advertisements. Only the action of the District Collector brought some sense to the Senior Executive [apparently Mr.Govind Tiwari] of the UB Group in Goa which also has political aspirations through its captive party [which unfortunately traces its origins to the great movement of Jayaprakash Narayan against abuse of power during Emergency]. The flex screen hoardings are being taken off, where they have not been torn off in protest. Today's newspaper do not carry the obnoxious advertisement. It is good. A unpleasant surprise is the silence of the Church in Goa, specially the Diocesan Centre for Social Communication and Media[DCSCM] which is quite vocal about Carnival and other piddling issues that should not really bother it. Is the involvement of the beer company in sponsorring church fete and similar events the cause of its silence? With the largest number of students in church-run schools, the Diocesan Society for Education [DSE] should have also been worried enough to protest. I had marked copies of my email to the ASCI to the Archbishop of Goa, DCSCM and DSE. From Mumbai I received response from the ASCI and a request to send the newspaper cuttings of the impugned advertisement. I am complying with this request. I will also send a copy to the Archbishop. He is the guardian of morality for the Catholics in his Archdiocese. He must be in the vanguard or abdicate his crook and his staff [ no pun intended, these are symbols of authority given to him at his installation as the Archbishop of Goa and Daman].The ASCI will administer justice to the secular cause of decency. A journalist friend of mine has also made a copy of The Press Council[Procedure for Inquiry] Regulations,1979 to me. As per Section 2 (e), strip or advertisement which is published in a newspaper is also covered in the definition of matter that can be brought before the Press Council Of India. Section 3 (f) (i) A. the period during which a complaint can be lodged with PCI for A. Dailies, News Agencies and Weeklies is within 2 months . There is still time to file the complaint. Hopefully, the Goa Government or the Goa State Women's Commission or similar body will file a complaint before the PCI. The anti-carnival brigade may not find this on its agenda. Viva Goa. Dear Goanetter, I have read many posting on Caste Related and religious issues on Goa net. Indian sacked by McDonald's heads credit card giant:- An Indian American, who as a newly arrived immigrant was sacked by McDonald's because he could not comprehend his supervisor's instructions, now heads Illinois's largest credit card issuer. Iftekhar Shareef, president and chief executive of National Bankcard Corp that has an annual sales volume of $100 million, has come a long way since that episode. I had never been exposed to spoken American English, Shareef told IANS in an interview. Those days television in India was nascent and there were no Western TV serials. One day, his supervisor at McDonald's asked him to fetch the mop. I knew what a broom was, but I did not know what he meant by a mop, said Shareef. But the final straw came when the supervisor asked him to bring Pine Sol, a cleaner and disinfectant and found Shareef searching for it in the freezer. He was fired hours later. [Goanet] Re: WGKF-GU Biodiversity and Advertising
Dear Sonia, In keeping with our promise not to be banal, we had a simple function today at the Goa University where the Chief General Manager of State Bank of India, Mr.Rameshkumar planted a kokum graft, before handing over a cheque of Rs.2.00 lakhs to Dr.Ajit Shirodkar, Chairman of WGKF in the presence of the Vice-Chancellor of Goa Univeristy Prof.Zacarias. The cheque is the first instalment of the SBI commitment of Rs.10.00 lakhs for the part of the BIODIVERSITY PLANTATION that will simply be called the SBI FRUIT TREE PARK. [Reported in the local newspapers on 22 and 23 August,2005]. The temporary banners used for the function are all taken away. The plants remain, the banners do not. We are evolving an advertising code with the participation of the collaborating agencies. In fact, this patch of greenery was created with a SBI fund way back in the early 1990s but had fallen into neglect. To avoid recurrence of such a thing WGKF has signed a five year Memorandum of Understanding with Goa Univeristy to plant and maintain the trees. The name SBI PARK gives the SBI a sense of ownership[ not over the property but the concept] over the trees there in. The CGM assured that the SBI will look beyond the present commitment in terms of time and money. the Vice Chancellor felt encouraged to say that he was looking for the association of the WGKF to go beyond the five years committed almost as a stake before the cards were open on the table. The WGKF had never undertaken such a project before. As the VC put it succintly, The enthusiasm of two elderly men has become infectious. Mr. P.G.Kakodkar is 69 years young.Dr. Ajit Shirodkar is similarly aged. Their enthusiasm in creating the Biodiversity Park and raising fund for it can best be compared to that of a teen-aged boy going on his first date: Nothing but the very best will do! There are always ways to raise money for something that one is all excited about. The local branch manager of SBI, Ms.Elsa Vernekar has obtained permission and funds to beautify another traffic island. She is also the custodian of the funds being raised under the WGKF-A/c Support Goa University to improve other infrastructure in the Goa University. Mr.P.G. Kakodkar has appealed to each household in Goa to contribute Rs.101/- to this fund. With 4.5 lakh households in Goa, this will yield Rs.4.5 crores. It is enough if 25% of the households[ less than 10% of the population] contribute this year to reach the target of Rs.1.0 crores. The Diamond Group of tabloids has committed to advertise the cause and the SWIFT account number free till the fundraising target of Rs.1.0 crore is achieved. On Monday, 29 August,2005, the Chief Minister will dedicate to the people of Goa, the SESA GOA GREEN BELT between the Goa University Library Complex and the Vice-Chancellor's Office, inclusive of two traffic islands. This segment of the Biodiversity Plantation will have shade trees, flowering shrubs, ramblers and creepers with colourful and fragrant flowers to create an ambience in which one would love to read a book...with pleasure. Sesa Goa Group is also participating in reviving the block of legume trees that was begun in 1991. The Chief conservator of Forests, Mr.A.K.Wahal, the Chairman of Biodiversity Board, Dr.Heman Y.Karapurkar, the Director of Science, Technology and Environment, Dr.N.P.S.Varde are expected to be present on the occasion. The BIODIVERSITY PARK has no SPONSORS. It rather has people, agencies and companies that are committing themselves to a cause. This barren patch of the plateau [ which was wooded/forested in the 1960s as per aerial photographs with Dr.S.G.Torne, the first Head of Botany Dept. at Goa Univeristy and the Ph.D guide of at least one Reader at Goa University and one Asst.Conservator of Forests in Goa] which Dr.Padmakar R. Dubhashi [ the second Vice-Chancellor-1990-94 of Goa University] had begun to re-vegetate will one day be a green oasis amidst an urban jungle. Participate in this great romance...and you will have yourself to thank for it !!! Cash is not the only thing that is needed. Even a word of encouragement helps. It helps change attitudes. Viva Goa. Dear Miguel, Advertising has evolved but mentalities of advertisers/companies has still a long way to go. [Goanet] Defence of the acquited.
Two boys have gone through a trialand tribulations because of an alleged rape in which 1.the victim has never testified,2. the complainant's [who was not raped, but is reportedly the mother of the alleged victim] version has not been concurred by the person [a nun] who is said to have got the first testimony of the so-called rape. It is accepted that the nun has denied the version put out by the alleged mother of the alleged victim. Still there are many who think that the boys had somehow committed rape while keeping the hymen intact. The panel of doctors have not agreed. The trial judge has not agreed. Yet, the hype of leaders of some well-meaning[ but apparently emotionally misled] organisations still has the confidence of the lynching party. If given the opportunity, they would like to set up a kangaroo court and execute[ or, as demanded in 2003, castrate the boys.] How that makes them different from the people who believe that scantily clad girls should be raped or that Kingfisher Airlines advertisements are good, one fails to understand. An immodestly dressed girl does not necessarily want to be raped. She may just be an exhibitionist...or from a culture that does not find the dress immodest. Persons who find short-cropped blouses and ABCD jeans immodest think nothing about women in backless choli blouses and belly-button showing sarees. That is Indian Culture...full of double standards. We have women's rights. All men are potential rapists. When we speak about Gender Equality, rape needs to be re-defined. The Giver should not remain at the Receiving end of the law. The law needs to be even handed. Thank God for good judges. Thank God the judge in this case was a lady. Otherwise some women's organisations might have alleged that there was a miscarriage of justice. The State and the Complainant should do reparations, tender an apology to the two falsely accused [ or at least, without evidence to substantiate the accusation] boys and pay compensation for their lost years. It was malafide at source. The evidence of the nun clearly nails the lie of the accuser. Let the State recover the costs from the major players in this seedy episode, including the doctor who supported the claim of rape and those that bore false witness for the prosecution, in person or by affidavit or statement to the police. Let justice be seen to be done. The so-called journalists will continue to be spineless. No one has apologised for defaming Pratima Gaokar after she was dead. No one will have the courage to apologise to the two defamed boys. Journalistic licence is their mask. Quite doubtful if the Goa Union of Journalists[ GUJ] can do something about it. If the journalists and Editors of newspapers in Goa really believe that the two boys are guilty, let them implead themselves and go into appeal or give evidence of the guilt. The law says the accused is an accused, just that. He is innocent till proven guilty. When acquitted, the person is either proved innocent or NOT proved guilty. Who is an Editor to sit in judgement after the judge has acquitted. His role is limited to tendering an apology and publishing a retraction of equal prominence and size in his newspaper as the original report. Pratima was accused of having a penis. These boys were accused of unauthorised use of the same organ. The Editors are more circumspect while writing about the famous two-in-one who frequents the Panaji end of the old Mandovi bridge after dusk. Perhaps they are uncomfortable discussing it. After all, it is reported to have given at least one cop literally a ' run for his money' at the new Secretariat end of the bridge! Down with hypocrites at the masquerade ball of journalism. [Goanet] NOW -JOIN ROMAN SCRIPT MOVEMENT (konkani)
Now you too can join the Roman Script Movement for the love of Konkani. All you need is to support Konkani written in any script Roman,Devnagiri, Kannada,Urdu Malyalam and what have you? In Goa it is Devnagiri and Konkani script. In Karnataka it is the Kannada script and so on. All those who have sent email messages will automatically be a part of the movement. This is besides DKA and TSKK. Any organisation can support the movement and join hands and thus the Movement will grow. Strike when the Iron is Hot. It would be appreciated if lovers of the movement make out a leaflet of the undermentioned as drafted by Fr Pratap Naik Director TSKK Porvorim and post it in your club notice board send it to friends well wishers etc place in magazines, newspapers other periodicals with a message to circulate it and reach out to others. *** Do you know RSM? It stands for Roman Script Movement. Why RSM? Roman script Konkani was the foundation on which Konkani was recognized by Central Government. Only in Goa Language act of 1987, for the reasons best known to Konknni Porjecho Avaz (KPA) Roman script was ignored and only Devanagari was inserted as the official script for Konkani. Some Roman script writers have said that it was a conspiracy by vested interest group. Therefore now RSM demands to rectify the past SIN by amending the Language Act of Goa (LAG)1987. ROMAN SCRIPT MOVEMENT (RSM) RSM demands from Goa Govt. the following: 1. Goa Government should give equal and officialstatus to Konkani written in Devanagari and Roman scripts. For this the Govt. should modify the Language Act accordingly. The present Language Act,1987 2. (c) reads Konkani language means Konkani language in Devanagari script. We proposethe following amendment to 2. (c):Konkani language means Konkani language in Devanagari and Roman scripts. 2. Goa Government recognizes Marathi Akademi as the official Akademi for Marathi in Goa and gives grants. Similarly, Goa Government must recognize Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) as the official NGO of Konkani in Roman script and give the same amount of grants which the Govt. gives to Goa Konkani Akademi (GKA) and Marathi Akademi. 3. So far, Goa Govt. has not appointed the President of GKA from the Roman script group. The term of the present GKA president will be completed in the month of November 2005. Hence this time Govt. must appoint the president of GKA from Roman script writers. 4. GKA is a Govt. institution. At present a nominee of the All India Konkani Parishad is the ex-officio member of GKA. GKA Constitution must be amended to include a nominee of Dalgado Konknni Akademi as the ex-officio member of GKA. Goa Govt. appoints three eminent persons as ex-officio members of GKA. While nominating these three persons Govt. should give equal representation to Devanagari and Roman script. 5. For the last many years Kala Akademi (KA) has stopped giving awards to books written in Roman script. KA should be ordered to give awards to Roman script Konkani writers, and extend to them all other projects and schemes which are available to Konkani in Devanagari script. 6. Kala Akademi gives Gomantak Sharada Puroskar to Konkani writers in Devanagari script and Marathi writers. In future KA must consider and give this prestigious award to Roman script writers and artists as well. 7. Kala Akademi is established to promote the culture of Goa. Hence it should be asked to promote cultural forms of roman script Konkani. 8. Govt. must name its new theatre for the performing arts in Margão, in honour of Late João Agostinho Fernandes, who is popularly known as Pai Tiatrist. 9. Tiatr is the most popular form of theatre in Goa. Therefore Govt. must promote it. 10. Govt. institutions and Govt. departments while publishing Konkani books, should publish them in both Devanagari script and Roman script. 11. In school syllabus, lessons from Roman script Konkani must be given equal representation without changing the language and style. In colleges and university the syllabus should include Konkani literature written in Roman script. 12. Konkani has two representatives in Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi. Goa Govt. sends three names to Sahitya Akademi as its nominees. Let the Goa Govt. send names of Devanagari writers and Roman script writers by turns. 13. To promote Konkani films the Govt. must establish a separate board with equal representation of artists from both scripts. Co-Ordinator ROMAN SCRIPT MOVEMENT @@@ Present situation --- so far none of the local politicians have openly supported the move to amend LAG. Their silence could be interpreted as indirect support to RSM. In Bible Jesus says, Those who are not against us are with us. Mr. Eduardo Faleiro's, (an ex. Matthew Almeida s.j. tells us in a recent article in Panjim's Herald: Shanai Gõibab wrote his first book in Devanagari only in 1910. Before that Gõibab himself wrote 13 books in Roman script, the last two of them were later put into Devanagari. (I hope everybody gets correctly on their monitors the tildes which I have used). Jorge

[Goanet] Re: Roman script Konkani... in new form
This new Roman script Konkani is bizarre. It really appears like shooting oneself in the foot. Mere phonetics should not drive one to such absurdities; after all, we read and write English accurately enough in Roman script, even though it is far from phonetic. (George Bernard Shaw once suggested that 'fish' be spelt as 'ghoti', with the 'gh' pronounced as in 'rough', the 'o' pronounced as in 'women' and the 'ti' pronounced as in motion!) If one is serious about popularising Roman script Konkani, such stuff should be avoided. Experience with diacritics and unconventional marks is that these things only cause confusion in the minds of the average reader; as such, they are best reserved for academic journals, etc. Look at the way Hindi is written in Roman script (in newspapers, magazines, etc. there are always a few Hindi words nowadays). Nobody who knows Hindi (and can read Roman script) has the slightest difficulty in understanding them. What is wrong with Roman Konkani as it is currently written? I am not a native Konkani speaker, but with some practice have never had any particular difficulty in reading Roman Konkani (though understanding it is more difficult, but then I have that problem with Devanagari Konkani as well). When getting Roman Konkani accepted is such a big struggle in itself, this really seems to be creating an additional unnecessary handicap, like tying heavy weights round one's legs before starting to scale a mountain. -- Question everything - Karl Marx

Re: [Goanet] Re: Roman script Konkani... in new form
Dear Eugene, TSKK just by introducing two symbols namely ^ (or inverted V) and ~ could achieve more than 90% accuracy in writing Konkani as it is pronounced. Accuracy in Devnagiri or other scripts are less than 70%. As per the new method Goem will be written as Goye~ and Goim will be written as Go~y Goiam will be written as Go~ya~ Goimkar will be written as Go~ykar Note that ~ is used for the nasal sound which is also the symbol in linguistics. This symbol is awailable as the first key below the escape key. ^ (or inverted V) Other symbols introduced by TSKK is for the vowel short A which is represented by 'o' in current roman script. This symbol is awailable at the seventh position after the symbol ~ which is also used for the number 6. Like Fred, I too am totally taken by surprise by TSKK's about turn or rather a change in direction, from first pushing from a devnagiri script to now promoting the new Roman Konkani script. Even the late Prof. Lourdino Rodrigues advocated devnagiri script, and the TSKK published his work in that script. I am not sure if the learned professor's full dictonary has been published. TSKK's earlier thrust for devnagiri was probably because the devnagiri script captured the phonetics well. If the same effect is available through the two added symbols to the Roman script it may be wise to follow this script. Will Goem be written as Goƒhy? Hi Goanetters! Ok coming back after a long time again on this auspicious day. Zaitea tempan eilear mog assta mhonttat. Mog aslear Ghanttar than evunk zata! Congratulations Herman! Living up to your name, Carneiro, you have been truly a humble sheep. Thanks to all your hard work in initiating this net concept on the Goan forum and enabling us to read about Goa and Goans and what happens there by the minute. Also thanks to the hard-working volunteer team of Frederick Noronha,Viviana Coelho, Bosco DMello, Daisy Rodrigues, Michelle DSouza, Christina Pinto and Vincente Fernandes, who keep sanity on this forum and get rid of the hate-mail and stuff that would hurt the majority of our conscientious Goanetters. Also thanks to various personalities on this group who post from their heads and from their hearts and who give us a chance to smile and admire their courage, knowledge and wit. At the same I wish the minority of posters who make some of our lives miserable would stay away and prevent us from hitting the delete button. Just because this forum is free to express anyones opinion doesnt mean it is a free for all. Think about your readers and how they will feel about your post and its consequences. A good discussion is always a fodder to the brain with its pros and cons. At least I come here for quality, not quantity. But then these personalities represent our everyday Goan in them: smart, intelligent, jealous, angry, impatient, social, anti-social, conservative, nut-pisso, auto, ishtupid, proud, bhitorle-moticho, pikar-korpi, mangar-korpi, dolldiro, kam-na-bekar-lowddy, shempddo, mogall, apurbayecho, Niz Goenkar, humble, shapodkar, nostalgic, Konknnivadis, racist, casteist, fundamentalist, mental, freeloader, downloader, etc. just like in our neighbourhood in Goa. I dont know, may be some charitable trusts, etc. But goanet, whatever you have done for the community sounds good to me. The latest news reports from Goa, deaths, incidents, accidents, crimes, political musical chairs, latest news keep us up-to-date on the day-to-day affairs in Goa. For us goanet is akin to Google or Yahoo and goanet does not make any money. Talk about no free lunch. If this is not free lunch what is it? Goenchi Pez with miskut/lonchem? Of course the high tech helped a lot. Otherwise, can you imagine in olden days you needed to do typing, re-typing, typesetting, editing, printing, and putting it all together and mailing it. You get here all the news from Goa faster than Goas Antonette on the internet. Today you just just hit the keyboard and upload/download. Pure and simple, except the checking of posts by the volunteer team, thats hard. I am sure there are other things involved, which we, the readers dont know about. And its all free! RE: [Goanet] Goanet's 11th Anniversary - August 25, 2005
Hi Herman, Porbim Tumkam on 11th anniversary. You have done wonderful job by intiating this forum in 1994. I know our Mario Rebello was the first to contribute for this forum from Kuwait and it was thru him that I got myself involved. Later on many came, some genuine and others fake as we still see them. Before the establishment of this forum we used to know Goa and Goans spread all around the wolrd thru Lambert Mascarenhas's monthly Goa Today though in a limited way but goanet brought total change and now Goan community is become very close. I understand that you have lot of plans to introduce new things. Fine, but what I suggest is that see if you can do something to stop the fake writers in fake names. In Kuwait they are mushrooming like anything, daily their number is increasing. See if there is any way to demolish them because their writings are not beneficial. The standard and integrity of Goanet is very high, only these cowards are soiling the prestige of goanet. I can rightly say goanet is the best forum of goans for this reason credible writers prefer to send their contributions to goanet. During the last 11 years goanet has done wonderful job. I hope in future it will do much more than what it has done during the last 11 years. Convey my greetings to all your team members. Regards A. Veronica Fernandes, Kuwait. [Goanet] re: goanet anniversary... and the next steps
I have said this before and I repeat this again on the occasion of goanet's eleventh anniversary -- that Herman is our own Rip Van Winkle, in the sense he wakes up only on certain auspicious days. This obvious is meant to be taken as a joke, just during one of the few heated debates on this forum he was also nicknamed The Herminator. Rip Van Winkle also means a person who is oblivious to social change. In this respect, Herman is no Mr. Winkle. Since he has announced that goanet would also help in community building projects, I think he and those who guide the destiny of goanet have the interests of the community at large at heart. I assume the goanet membership has increased over the past few years, which is a good sign that Goans, and in few cases, non-Goans see the forum as something to be part of in sharing knowledge of Goa and things Goan. What is saddening, however, is the absence of voices that one heard very loudly and clearly. Some of the prolific writers have disappeared altogether. I wish they could show up now and then. I can't say if they are still members. If they are, they perhaps won't to remain in the background, a place to where they relegated themselves. I won''t name names, but if these guys and gals are reading this I would want them to make their presence again on the forum. It was joy to read them, argue with them, agree or disagree with them, and pick each other's brains. I have said it earlier, but the lack of women's voices is another disturbing issue. I ask again, Where have all the women gone? We need more than Daisy's recipes and Cynthia's soul-searching posts, often forwarded from other mailing lists, Viviana's direct hits, now infrequent, and Liane Rodricks's limericks. Give us the female perspective on things, from World Goa Day to Konkani script and everything in between. Coming to Herman's future goals, I think getting funds for social upliftment projects, literary projects and women's empowerment projects would make goanet not just an cyber water fountain stop or an idle's man pastime, as some critics say in hushed voices. I would also suggest that goanet seek reasons from those who have left or are silent. Reasons could be from 1. lack of time, 2. burn out, 3. information overload, 4. just hot air, 5. too much infighting. They should be invited to suggest alternatives, but as far as I can see, the alternatives are few. What goanet is doing and facing is common to many mailing lists. Here's raising a glass of feni to goanet and all those who bring us the news and views each day, rain or shine, Hurricane Katrina or Tsunami. [Goanet] NEW BROOM BEGINS ACTION!
In today's paper there was a report about the two replies elicited from the government of India by new Rajya Sabha member from Goa, Shantaram Naik. The second reply was from Defence Minister, Pranab Mukherjee. It was about the flight restrictions applicable at Dabolim Airport. It seems these are in operation from Mondays through Fridays from 0830 hrs to 1300 hrs and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1900 to 2130 hours. The reason for the restriction is given in the paper as extensive military flying. It seems the military has suddenly become a bit coy about using the word training' in connection with these daily operations. It may have become awkward to explain how pilots who eventually operate from the confines of an aircraft carrier need perpetual training on a runway which is as big as either Delhi or Mumbai! Its like saying that in every city there needs to be a full sized football ground every 20 km so that new car drivers can gain the confidence before learning to drive! In the process an even bigger question crops up and that is about the extensive military flying entailed at Goa. Its almost as if Goa is on a par with Iraq or Afghanistan in terms of military flight activities. How long will the charade continue at Dabolim? The RS member needs to follow up with a question or two about when military training flight operations will be shifted to Seabird so that civilian flights can expand at Dabolim. In his reply the Defence Minister has reportedly made much of the round the clock availability of Dabolim for civilian flights subject to the exceptions listed. This has been in existence for 2 years, enough time to evaluate its efficacy if any. Unfortunately, the military adopts a take it or leave it attitude without doing anything to alleviate the underlying problems. As a result, the AAI imposes a 1800 hour curfew because it is unable to staff the airport beyond this hour esp for chartered flights which require immigration counters. And the domestic airlines are unable to make exceptions to their schedules for days when there are no military restrictions as it upsets the rhythm. As a result there is one big hiatus over civilian flights at Dabolim from one year to the next. Its anybody's guess as to who will take the lead to sort out this mess.

HI Herman, Congratulations on the stupendous job that you have done as head of Goa net. If you remember, we used to keep in touch during the early days when Goa had the axcess.net.in archaic form of emailing. I wonder if you remember that! Anyway, things have changed dramatically ever since and i wonder if you know that i had suggested you, Eddie and Marlon for a joint "Man of Goa" guess it should have been "Men of Goa" that Goa Today always comes up with. Unfortunately, we look back into the past in these type of things but let things be. I have moved from real estate into advertising, marketing, events, writing and maybe, soon, an art gallery. Getting into the finer things in life I guess I also organise the well known "Heritage Jazz Yatra" at heritage homes in Goa. What started of as a fun concept is now moving fast towards the highway. Anyway, i guess the reason we have not kept in touch is the fact that we have not met personally. I hope we can change that soon when either you are in Goa or i make my first trip to the US. Do keep in touch and God Bless in the meantime. sincerely and with sincere regards once again, Armando GonsalvesHerman Carneiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: ### Don't just read the news...discuss it. Dear Herman: Thank you and the wonderful band of volunteers who keep the wheels of the goanet churning. As you have seen, you cannot please everyone on the forum. The fact that you cannot please everyone on the forum, indeed is a good thing. I know you have taken a lot of heat for maintaining a semblance of decorum on the goanet, which is next to impossible. By and large Goanet revealed more about ourselves as individuals, then the topics we discussed. On its 11th Anniversary I warmly salute you and everyone who makes the goanet possible. They just continue to work diligently day in and day out. In my eyes, they are nothing short of heroes in our community. What does the future hold for Goanet? As you know, the Goanet mailing lists have been the mainstay of Goanet. We will continue to expand this network to reach Goans wherever they may be. We will also continue to work towards improving the quality of the forum. Last year saw the Goanet take a huge step forward with the launch of http://www.goanet.org/. This year, we plan to develop the website further. We plan to improve our news service, introduce innovative ways to share information and to launch community building projects in Goa. I hope to see more of you volunteer with Goanet. You don't have to be computer savvy. You just have to be willing to devote a little time to your community. Together we can provide a valuable public service to our community. Congratulations to Goanet on its 11th anniversary! Best wishes, Herman Carneiro Goanet Admin Goanet Building social capital since 1994. http://www.goanet.org/ Where Goans Connect!
[Goanet] WORLD GOA DAY MONTREAL CELEBRATION -PHOTOS -WRITE UP
CAN YOU HAVE A GOAN FUNCTION WITHOUT GOAN FOOD ? Felix D'Sa Despite the bucketing rain and cool weather, Quebec Goan Association (QGA) members came out in fine force for the annual potluck picnic; close to ninety brave souls made the journey to Angrignon Park, Montreal. Tents and tarps were set up and barbecues flamed away as delectable dishes quickly filled the tables. (How can you have a successful Goan function without food?)
